Drop Shot Rig: How To Rig the Drop Shot (Tutorial)

  • The drop shot rig is very simple to tie and this video explains how to tie it in the quickest and easiest way. The drop shot rig is one of the most popular finesse fishing techniques for bass fishing and using this rig will help you catch more bass. This rig is ideal for fishing in tough conditions when fish aren't active or aggressive. The drop shot rig tends to excel most when fished over rocky flats or deep drop offs around sparse structure such as brush or sunken debris. While the drop shot rig is notorious for landing big fish in clear water it is also a very effective dirty water rig as well.

      Nice video. Have you seen the free drop shot rig? I saw it on Mike Ike's youtube channel. It uses 2 bobber stoppers instead of tying a not on the hook. It allows for the fisher to modify the drop shot length without tying a new knot and allows for the hook to spin around the line giving it a more realistic presentation. The only negative I could see is that the bobber stoppers may not provide enough resistance so in theory it could worsen the hookset.

    I watched several videos on tying the drop shot rig and this one at a little over two minutes was the easiest one to follow👍 I’ve just gotten into Bass fishing over the last couple of months and caught my first fish ( just under four pounds on a light finesse 1 ought rebarb hook set up weedless on a drop shot.it’s also not a bad way to rig a wacky worm .. Now I see guys are power fishing this set up with heavier weights and bigger worms on baitcasters as well.. Thanks for the easy to follow demo🙏

    The knot is called a palomar knot. You dont need a special weight, just use a standard split shot. I tie 2 overhand knots around the shot. You can vary the length of the line the weight is attached to as well. You can rig the worm like the video shows, you can wacky rig the worm which is just hooking the worm through the middle or you can rig the worm in the standard way. Good basic video that didnt take ten minutes to show something that is pretty simple.

    Thanks for the video. There’s one aspect of fishing a drop shot rig that I don’t get and hope that either you - or one of your subscribers who have experience using it - can explain. I thought that the technique is for fishing vertically, either from a boat or a pier or breakwater etc. from dry land. However, many pro anglers suggest that it can be cast out and, not only that, but fished in fairly shallow water. This I don’t understand, because the main line is not going to be perpendicular to the water, it’s going to be at a minimum of 45 degrees - if not more. Consequently, the lure will not be ‘swimming’ anywhere near horizontally in the water column - but either pointing down at a steep angle towards the bottom or upwards at a steep angle towards the surface. This strikes me as being a most unnatural presentation and would not fool a bass or, indeed, any other predatory fish! So, what am I missing? Help please!

    I'm curious to know more about the actual dropshot weight.
    I'm presuming it's attached the way it is in case you get snapped off so that the fish has more chance of losing the weight from the line as opposed to a small ledger weight actually tied onto the end of the line?
    Am I right?
    Cheers
    Gary

    Is it a method fished vertically under the rod tip? I say that because I'm guessing that if you introduce any slack into the line then the lure would simply drop to the bottom, however by fishing it vertically under the rod tip it is easier to keep the line taut and thus the lure sitting up nicely above the weight on the bottom.

    • @MysteryTackleBox
      @MysteryTackleBox  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Peter, you can fish this vertically off the side of a boat, but you can also cast it out as well. Just keep your rod tip pointed up and twitch the rod tip and then hop it back towards you and reel in the slack every so often.

    I'm not seeing many replies on comments so I doubt I get one but what's the advantages to drop shotting? Can you still cast out or do you need to drop it straight down?

    • @Schnazola
      @Schnazola 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The drop shot is mainly for vertical fishing. It's a finesse method. I have cast it from the bank and boat, however, with good results. But you still have to think of it as a vertical technique.
      Use the lightest weight you can to hold the bottom. You will fell the bites better.
      Use a bait with neutral buoyancy. You don't want the bait to sink; a nose up/tail-down presentation is awful.
      The video shows little distance between the weight and the bait. You can increase that depending on where you think the fish are in the water column. I've used as much as a foot or 18 inches at times. I'm thinking I've had the greatest success with 12 inches between the weight and the bait.

    • @allenbmooresharinginformation
      @allenbmooresharinginformation 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two inch would work for sure. You want most any soft plastic that floats so it has a life like presentation. Not a good rig for a small senko which sinks.

  • @Hocking1973
    @Hocking1973 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Big Concern: Palomar Knots and Fluorocarbon Lines do not work together at all! In a non-Drop Shot setting using a Palomar Knot with Fluorocarbon line results in regular knot failures on hook sets. I have not used this type of knot with a Drop Shot setup. Isn't this true for Drop Shot rigs as well?

      Jamie Prosser It sure is. I think they did that to show you a close-up of the whole rig. You should usually have it from about 10"- 30" depending on fishing conditions and target species. When I fish for Smallmouth on the Detroit River with Yum Warning Shot, I usually stay in the 12"-20" range. We get some hogs that way (I have footage on my channel).

      Nose-hooking is very effective for largemouth bass, because they are "suction" feeders. They almost always attack the head and the side. I have rarely experienced short strikes with the species.

      awill891 You should throw it out and make sure your line is taut. You can twitch it a little and move it now and then. It is a slow retreive action. The key is keeping the line taut so the bait stays just above the bottom.
