    Am going to try this from the beach here in California with a 13 foot surf rod as the rod I attach to the bottom, and a seven foot rod as my main rod. Would this work in the surf, or will I be better off using the long rod as my main rod?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think it could work if you can get the trolley line high enough but it may be difficult.

  • @jeffersonkingkoi7662

    If there is no structure around the jetty/pier will a heavy sinker at the end of a trolley rod suffice?

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have not found that a heavy sinker can work with this rig. It has to hold very tight pressure for the trolley system to work.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello, You do need a few rigs, I use a very light wire bronze hook that will bend under breaking pressure. I then add a bead and a bobber stop a few feet above the hook in case the line breaks, if the line breaks the rigs will travel down to the bead and stop.

    • @Saltyscales
      @Saltyscales  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +jroyero Hello sir, the reason for this rig is to keep your bait stationary regardless of the tide and assist with hooking pelagics once they strike.

    • @ubreakitirepairit3569
      @ubreakitirepairit3569 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lol. I was thinking the same thing. It would seem more logical to throw out a line with a heavy enough weight to keep the line in place.

      Sport fish like to follow and push their prey inshore into a corner. When they run into a pier they see it as an obstacle, so they run up the outside of the pier or under it. The pin-rig, or trolley rig, suspends live bait just above the surface flopping around as an easy meal. The key to this type of rig is to use fresh live bait, which makes the use of it a lot of work catching fresh bait. Sport fish will pass on most pier (dead) baits because they are chasing live baits in the water, but will snap at a chance of an easy meal on a pin-rig while passing by.
      Most everyone on a pier is fishing for bait, while pin-rig or trolley rig guys are fishing for sport fish. Hope this helps....

      @@roberttoppi5427 rite you want it just below surface - but keeping it so the waves will not make your bait come in an out of the water - I have found out to much in an out will kill the bait

    • @chuckhoward3626
      @chuckhoward3626 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the bottom and what you use as an anchor rod (trolley rod). Here on the East Coast we anchor in the sand, and use 10 to 15 foot heavy surf rods so we can heave out 5 lb anchors that looks similar to a small pier gaff. We lose them from time to time. but yank up the lost also at the end of the day now and again. The key is getting some thing to stay put for the day and surf/bottom.

      You don't need to tie a fighting rod to the rail.... 2-4 lbs max on the drag and just lean the pole against the rail. Star drags are outdated, but they worked; lever drag reels is the way to go today. It is all about how you rig your bait. Never set a drag down on a pole at a pier if it is not in your hands!!!
