Why Jedi Never Stopped Slavery In the Galaxy (The Evil of the Republic)

- Why did the Jedi allow for slavery to still be widely practiced in the galaxy despite being heavily morally opposed to it? In today's holocron video we explore the complex politics of slavery in Star Wars.

Qui Gon smart as fuck. He still tried a way to help Shmi Skywalker get her freedom. Definitely a good father figure for Anakin. I believe that if Anakin wanted to see his mother again that Qui Gon would be okay with it. He was compassionate and understanding in many ways.
Agreed.
Shame he died, if he'd trained Anakin it may have ended differently
one thing I never understood was that he dropped the idea of freeing Shmi as soon as Watto said "no racer is worth two slaves!" Watto then told Anakin "if your friend is not careful I'll own him soon too", which made me wonder: If Qui-Gon is prety much betting everything on Anakin winning the race anyhow, why not bet himself against Shmi? surely a jedi slave would be a valuable asset and definetly a worthy betting token against Shmi. Or is that just now how things work on Tattooine? Is it just not possible to bet yourself away as a slave?
One could argue that would have been too risky... but the thing is, so was betting the queen's ship without her knowledge. Qui-Gon was confidentally betting away whatever he could because he KNEW Anny would win. So why not increase the bargain to also free Shmi? (Edit: typo)
@@TheExecutorr Freeing Shmi and getting her back to Corisant could have changed everything.
Anakin would never have killed the Sand people and set himself down the path to the dark side.
@@katakisLives yeah I think so too. It may have been for nothing because Palpatine would likely have found a way to kill Shmi and make Anakin mad in some other way, but it would at least have prevented one possible way for Anakin to feel the power of the dark side for the first time.
Yet another reason to love Quigon lol
People underestimate Hutt Space. Jabba the Hutt and his ancestors were way more powerful than the movies give him credit for.
Ya a even moderately health hutt could lift small space ships and tanks and could even regenerate vital organs like brain and they had some pretty good tech as well if I recall right the hutts were one of the few groups to resist the Rakata or at least one the major groups to pop up immediately after the fall of the Rakata
Still, the Clone Wars era produced possibly the most powerful Jedi High Council of all time. It must be terrifying for a Hutt to go into combat against Yoda, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan or Anakin. The Jedi would get the upper hand by combative abilities alone. While they could use the Force to dismantle the mercenary armies.
The Hutts could be given respectful peace terms after the war. Autonomy. Yet, the corruption and cowardice of the Order to stand by such a status quo is inexcusable.
@@alexb9969 actually the clone wars council was probably the weakest the jedi ever had apart from maybe the galactic dark age era
for example the kotor era jedi council members regularly knew extremely powerful force abilities like force severe and were much better trained for combat especially to fight other force users along with how bad most of their displays during the clone wars were. for example the clone wars jedi didn't even use force ionize despite facing armies mostly of droids
At the end of the day, the republic never had enough influence in the outer rim to enforce the full extent of it's laws there, especially during the 1000 years where they had no central military to threaten anyone with.
Yes disbanding their full time army completely was the worst possible decision they could have made! No foreign power will respect and fear retaliation from a nation that has no military power or presence whatsoever! And especially a government that does not do what it knows and believes is good , virtuous ,and right!!!!
I never understood why the Separatists broke away from the Republic until I grew older and dove deeper into the Legends and lore books. Now it all makes sense! I always thought the CIS were the bad guys and to some extent they are, but the Republic had also become corrupt uncaring and stagnant in its thousand years of existence!!!!
There is a fanfic called darth vader hero of naboo, here time traveller darth vader calls out the jedi for the fact that they did NOTHING against slavery in the 1000 years since the ruusan reformation. Not to spoil much but i have to admit that the Jedi are not the paragons of light.
Essentially the Jedi
There are Sith: KILL IT WITH FIRE WITH MAXIMUM PREJUDICE
There are Slavers: naaah
yeah not having their own army would make the republic less of a gover, emt and more like a tight alliance of it members worlds. But with no republic army then should it be like NATO each system keeps its own army and when they ally together.
After seeing this video about how the Hutts controlled 1/4th of the known galaxy I think the war weary Republic of 1000 years before the Phantom Menace must have been completely insane to completely dismantle their military. Put more resources toward rebuilding and helping the citizens sure but not having any dedicated soldiers is just insanity!
The foundations of the Republic never once controlled the outer rim or Hut controlled space, during the Zim empire which is the founding of the Republic try to overtake that section and billions died in wars that lasted hundreds of years
Master Lin-Koln tried to end it, but he got shot with a blaster in an opera house on Coruscant
... The Grand Army of the Republic did avenge him
Edit: this is a reference to both real life and Star wars
Took me a second to get it 😂
It was a case of the Jedi ignoring injustice when it suited them. Hats off to Qui-Gon tho.
So what, exactly, could they do to stop slavery given how few they were and how powerful the Hutts were?
@@Alverant They could have tried to get the republic to outlaw it. It may have been a symbolic effort, but it would have something.
Please. The jedi didn't have the power or influence to stop it all. And if they messed with it in major slave areas...well...you lost the supply routes and possible start assassination attempts all over

as a kid myself I used to venerate jedi and Sith back in my day. But now I have long since outgrown them all and gravitate towards the Mandalorians. And then my favoritism extended towards the imperium of man from Warhammer 40k.

simple, very simple, its why I now support the separatist
did you watch the video? very stupid take with 0 nuance for the situation i bet youd just white knight straight in there no problem right?
I feel like the issue is bigger than that though. There are countless people and cultures across the galaxy, many live in societies that can only be called barbaric and cruel. I mean, just look at the shit Neimoidians go through after being born. And the jedi also see themselves as keepers of the peace, who at least tolerate every culture because ending such practices woud often require interfering with the culture of certain species. WHich basically means suprpressing/ colonizing them. WIth violence. Which would be even more hypocritical than doing nothing about it. For example, Trandoshans are known to be slave traders and hunters. Can a jedi defend any Wookie they come across that is hunted by Trandoshans? Sure. But can a jedi just smack every Trandoshan on the head for being a Trandoshan? Not really, that's kinda mean and not the jedi way.
Also the whole "peacekeeper" thing has another problem: Pissing off the hutts on a large scale (like crusading to end slavery across the galaxy) Would undoubtedly cause a conflict akin to a war with the Hutts. A war the jedi would have started by forcefully invading Hutt Space and putting an end to slavery there. You can't really call yourself "keepers of the peace" while you're invading the planets of others. I mean you can, and certain modern countries do it to this day, but it's easily way more hypocritical than just turning a blind eye.
For those who think that it is more complex. What happens if I replace Hutt with Sith? The Jedi would not hesitate! They are dogs trained to attack a single target.
Again, the biggest mistake of the Jedi was serving the republic completely.
“The Republic doesn’t exist out here. We must survive on our own “ say what you will about the prequel scripts…lines like this hit hard
Because Tattoine doesn't belong to the Republic. Duh. What hits hard there? It's not like the Republic is being unfair to it's territory as you seem to believe.

Historically the Republic had never covered all the galaxy. Sometimes more, sometimes less, maxing out at something over half, and thinly held at the frontiers [say, Tatooine and similar places], and wherever large alien civilizations with interstellar capability existed inside it, with or without being members of the republic [were the Hutts even in the republic?]. Practicality is not a trivial consideration.
Neither is the question of who has sovereignty at all. Is a place part of the Republic at all? If not, what business of the Republic to police it?
At some times, especially in its final millennium, it was more like the UN than a single polity. TO what degree did it exercise legal sovereignty over its members? Or did it just serve them? Did it have the authority to dictate the terms of their society and politics? Did it have the means enforce that by arms against them?
What about Diversity? Not trifling ethnic and cultural diversity among the humans either. This was a multispecies civilization. Reptilian or insectoid species, or what have you, might assume bipedal forms for whatever in-universe reason, but it would be absurd to think they would develop anything resembling the psychological, social, moral and political assumptions that primates might do. And even the primates might range widely. An insectoid species is certainly not going to develop anything resembling personal liberty. Or equality. It might develop a kind of democracy, insofar as a hive mind to which all contribute, unequally, and then ruthlessly conform to the decision can be so named. By what authority would the Republic enforce Primate, Human, and even selective human morality at that, on these species?
Maybe the enslavement of human Republic citizens by aliens, if the Republic is prepared to go to war over it.
It's also a huge galaxy. With, in Legends, 25ky of history. How many Jedi are there at any one time, and are they busy?
Money and influence, essentially. The Republic wouldn't say no to either. Nor would they stop slavery if it was ingrained within a culture.
Even the Empire didnt go lightly into Hutt Space.
Small correction. The part arrived before Cliegg Lars bought Shmi's freedom. Shmi, Owen, and Cliegg used it to actually buy her freedom from Watto (as seen via Leia reading Shmi's holo-journal in the novel Tatooine Ghost).
There's a passage in the Power of the Jedi Sourcebook (written for the d20 WotC Star Wars RPG between 2002 and 2005) that describes a pair of Jedi (Master and Padawan) on a mission in Hutt Space, where they witness the brutality that Hutts subject their slaves to and the Master does nothing. On the next phase of their mission, now inside the Republic on Ord Mantel, the Master intervenes to prevent a shopkeeper beating his servant.
The Padawan is confused, pointing out that they witnessed much greater acts of barbarism and brutality on Nar Shaddaa yet the Master did not intervene.
The Master explains that slavery is legal in Hutt Space, and for him to attempt to rescue slaves on Nar Shaddaa he would by "passing judgement on Hutt Culture on behalf of the Republic". He continues by saying that "slavery is not legal on Ord Mantel. For that shopkeeper to beat his servant it was an unlawful display of dominance and cruelty; one that the Republic would immediately condemn if it knew about it". He expresses regret that the disparity exists, and assures his padawan that were it up to him, he would liberate every slave in Hutt Space, but without the Republic's permission he is not in a position to correct matters.
I love videos like these. They fill in information you barely knew anything about. The information go's to show you that Gorge Lucas really added real world issues in his space opera.
This is a good example of why the Jedi joining the Republic was the worst decision they could’ve made.
I always think back to the early Tales of the Jedi comics, which had a storyline set circa 4,000BBY. Back then, the Jedi Order was depicted as being allied to the Republic, but not actually working for it. They were an autonomous organization unto themselves and their main base of operations was Ossus, not Coruscant. This always made more sense to me than what Lucas showed us in the prequels. The Jedi were *not* (as Obi-Wan nostalgically claimed) "guardians of peace and justice". They were tools for enforcing Republic policy, within Republic boundaries. If that meant ignoring crises even within the Republic, like the Trade Federation annexing Naboo then they would do so.
exactly
I bet at some point in the jedis past the jedi where vigilantes traveling the galaxy as galactic hobbos helping where they could then disappearing before the planets law could catch them leaving nothing behind but the stories of a robed individual with stange powers how wielded a glowing blade that burned hotter than any fire. The jedi hobbos would then sence kids that had the ability to use the force than take them away traveling with there masters while the jedi master trained them in the wase of the force. The jedi probable toke kids that were homeless or a orphanges i dont think the jedi would kidnap kids though. Then when the jedi was ready for there lightsaber the master would take them to the secret crystle caves then the student will then have to make there own lighsaber using the force to guide them not use pre built peices for lightsabers like in star wars the clones wars. Then after there jedi training is finished and theyle probably continue to travel with there master gaining more knowledge or joirney on there own to help then one day trained a student of there own.
@@discover1114 - The older comics do depict them as kind of "Wild West lawman" characters. Their missions were more likely to come from their Masters, rather than being handed down by the Republic government. Granted, the Republic spanned less of the galaxy in those days and some regions closer to the Core were more like the Outer Rim would be in the PT/OT/ST timeframe. Since the Jedi didn't actually work for the Republic, their actions outside of it weren't much of a diplomatic or political issue for the Senate, who could simply point out that the Jedi were allies of, not agents of, the Republic.
Jedi unimaginable power but they can't end slavery. All because the Republic rather turn a blind eye.
it's a bit more complicated than that. "unimaginable power"? If the first battle of Geonosis showed anything, it was that the jedi were far from ready for a war. And crusading the outer rim to end slavery would have started just that, a full scale war with the Hutts. The results would have been desastreous for the jedi, the Republic and thousands of worlds. Turning a blind eye may be hypocritical, but calling yourself "keepers of the peace" and then going off to start a war with Hutt space would be a thousnad times more hypocritical.
@@TheExecutorr I know the Jedi can't go to war to end slavery. It's just always bothered me that most in the Star Wars universe seem to ignore slavery. I know the Jedi do what they can, but without the Republic's help there pretty much powerless.
@@KepaniGrayson very true, nobody in the Republic seems to give a shit because it is more convenient that way. But hey, it's the same in the real world after all. We all talk high and mighty about human rights and think we're the good guys, but somehow still buy 2$ shirts en masse which were 100% made by a poor guy in a Taiwanese sweatshop who has to work 15 hours a day to afford a meal. If we really REALLY wanted to do something about it, we totally could. But everyone just pushes the blame to someone else and says "welp, not my responsibility". The consumers say "if it was that bad it wouldn't be allowed to be sold right?" And the politicians say "something something freedom of the market, something something I know of nothing".
And we're all sitting on the same planet. Plausible deiniability probably gets much worse (and much more plausible) if you extend that to an entire galaxy. (Edit: typos)

Bro out of all the things Leslie Headland could’ve tackled regarding the Jedi being “bad” WHY didn’t she at least try this subject…
Won’t give my reasons as they may be a bit “edgy” but I have an idea why 🙃
The Republic is not always good
Yep.
The Council isn’t always right
Almost nobody wanted problems with the Hutts, even the Empire.
I assume Palpatine wanted to crush them after he dealt with the Rebellion. He would have the power with the Death Star/Death Star II.
@@nialencapefet5154 Probably, but when he had full control over (most) of the galaxy for years and still felt like he needed a super weapon before going after the Hutts shows how much power the Hutts have. The pre-Clone War era Republic neither had a military or a superweapon so they had 0 chance of ever going against the Hutts in armed conflict over slavery or otherwise, and even during the The Old Republic game they tried not force the Hutts into the Sith side because they couldnt beat both.
The Republic: I don't get why so many systems succeeded from us🤔
The Republic's government in question:
The Legends continuum was just beginning to answer these questions before Disney got their hands on Star Wars. Now we'll never get an answer.
This is terrible and disgusting. I fight the Exchange and slavers whenever I can. This is terrible. I fight Czerka too. I managed to help Sand People on Tatooine. I understand it's beneficial but it's terrible. Jedi should have push more to end the slavery once and for all. May the Force be with you too😊
OK OK OK HEAR ME OUT ....... why the fuck couldn't Padme and the royalty of Naboo buy Shmi's freedom as a thank you to Anakin for blowing up the blockade ship?!?!?!??!?!
Good question.
They tried, but they late. Padme send the Sabe Tatoin, but she don't found Shmi.
I read for the canon book:
Queen's Hope- Johnston E. K.
Qui Gon would have saved Anakin's mom's and he probably would have not turned to the dark side of the force
I think that Attack of the Clones missed a great opportunity by not addressing the issue of slavery. It would have been great if Anakin would have gone rogue on Tatooine trying to free his mother from the clutches of Jabba and fighting slavery against the wishes of the Jedi Council. This would have made the character more interesting, would have provided opportunity for action including Padme, would have made the moral issues a lot murkier and would have given Anakin a good reason to question the Jedi Order.
Honestly when watching the movies I wondered why the jedi with all their power were so hypocritical to never end slavery. But if you think about it, it makes sense. First of all, you can't really call yourself "keepers of the peace" while crusading the outer rim to end slavery. A noble cause, sure, but it would result in a fullblown war all the same, which would cause death and suffering on a galactic scale.
And also the jedi were anything but invincible. If the battle of Geonosis showed us one thing clearly, it is that the jedi were far from ready for any kind of war. They would never have made it deep into hutt space even if they had prepared a crucade to end slavery. Or at least they would have needed allies for it, the jedi by themselves couldn't have done anything. Sure they could have liberated a few systems, but as soon as the hutts get their troops ready and focus their ressources, the jedi are outgunned, outnumbered and outmatched by the thousands.
So in short, ending slavery would have beena noble cause, but also likely the end of the jedi order, on top of being the peak of jedi hypocrisy. It was simply not in their power, and even if it was it weould have gone against their principals.
The Republic Senate take bribes to allow it and while the Jedi could lead an anti slavery crusade they didn’t because they honestly didn’t care.
I think a problem with Jedi is that they couldn't become a lasting presence to ensure change. They could stop oppression but couldn't instill order. And on planets outside of the Republic their presence and actions would have no lasting effect, and may have even made things worst.
But why are there organic slaves at all in a galaxy that has droids?
You have to build droids. You can breed slaves
personal and/or entertainment
Droids require maintenance, replacements, all sorts of stuff. Organics...they don't require much to keep them alive ENOUGH
I agree with what other comments have said, but I’d like to add: I’ve also read Star Wars books about organics being more efficient than droids. I think it implied that humans can adapt and think, where a droid can only really think within its programming. In “Star Wars A New Dawn”, it also mentioned how slaves work best, because you can make an organic fear punishment or death, but not a droid. So an organic could be scared into working harder, but a droid can’t.
so the plot err evil can happen
I’ve stated it a number to of times… the “relationship” between the Huts and the Jedi was already tenuous they should have been compelled if only to consider the chosen one as a slave was the largest impossible to ignore symbolism that that was the unturned stone that needed to be turned over. Dismantling slavery is likely the only thing that would have kept him from turning even if Qui-Gon had lived.
@TheStupendousWave Related question about Star Wars I'd like to ask: wasn't the clone army during the clone wars essentially a slave army?
Decades ago, we think the Jedi as so called good guys but in recent years new material is being put in to show how terribly flawed they are. No wonder why Luke became disillusioned with the Jedi.
And what I find to be quite moronic and even ironic, it’s that the Jedi brought down the Zarian sleeve empire, but did nothing when it came to the huts Zarian, slave, empire, and the huts would prosper under the galactic Empire, but would both become a target of the rebel alliance during the Galactic Civil War
The Jedi knew they could never totally end the ills that plagued the galaxy.
Despite their capabilities, training, and skill in wielding the Force.
The Jedi AND the Republic simply couldn't cleanse the galaxy of EVERY problem.
They could only do what they could within the Republic and Republic allied systems.
Trying to do otherwise would've only led to unceasing conflict that might eventually destroy not only the Republic....but the galaxy entirely.
Ooh! Ooh! Now do Star Trek!
7:48 where's this art from?
Yes, it bugs me, and yes, they should've made a push.
Why haven't you ever done video about vong?
It does help to understand just how messy the situation was. Part of me still wishes the Republic had ended the practice, but it would have involved, essentially, a war of conquest against the hutts. Still wish they’d done it, but it would have cost billions of lives at the very least
As was stated in the movies the Jedi are not a police force.
Would be interesting a story were vader not get burned in mustafar, after defeat kenobi and kill sidious he now fight against the slavery in the galaxy, in many cases going personally without no mercy.
Interesting
Amazing

Not going back to Tatooine to spend a few credits buying Shmi's freedom led to Anakin's fall. The Jedi were destroyed by apathy and parsimony.
Solid video. Yeah, it's a plot hole for me. There should have been rogue jedi or force users rather operating to free slaves. Instead of sabers you'll use the force to help guide your weapon and gadets.
I'm not sure if this is true or not but I heard or saw someone say that one of the reasons the republic didn't invade Hutt space to end slavery was because the Hutts paid their taxes on time and if true this pisses me off to no end
Yeah definitely they should have done something about it but they were just too deep in they dogmatic it's no wonder why in the end some of their dogmatic ways cost the order it cost the lives of every Jedi
There weren't enough Jedi to stop slavery out there.
Even if Hutt space was part of the Republic... If prostitution and drug dealing in real life are anything to go by, outlawing slavery is not enough to get rid of it. More proactive means are necessary, but the problem there is that a Galaxy is simply too big of a territory to adequately enforce.
Tatooine exits outside of the Republic so it's nothing the Jedi can do about it.
I just easily came up with a plot for a tv show that could likely trump the Whacolytes writing
Easy…
Have force sensitive kid(boy or girl) witness slavery by the hutts and sees jedi can help, but won’t due to “political reasons”
Kid grows up in hutt underworld resenting jedi.
Finally catches a break and kills a hutt, only to attract the attention of the Jedi.
Outwits the Jedi and ends up in the graces of a would-be prospect for a Plagueis apprentice…
Wants revenge on the Jedi who abandoned him as a kid and the prospect agrees to train him if he can complete a task
By the end of the series acolyte completes task but is ultimately betrayed by the prospect as he was only using the acolyte.
Big Plagueis reveal for end credits and tease for season 2(where obv prospect fails or dies because Palps is destined to become Plagueis’s true apprentice)
It’s rough and not really that well thought out, but I just came up with this within like 3 min.
Tell me if it’s better/worse than the acolyte show we got 🥲
The jedi again showed that they were complacent. Rather than seeking to make the truly good choices a jedi SHOULD make, they cowered away.
Its not surprising that they fell to the empire.
More like in this situation, there was no good choice.
@@animeman8203 untrue. They had the power to do so, but allowed themselves to be held down by the republic. What good is a Jedi that refuses to make difficult choices?
This is why Qui was the best of them.
@@EmberedAshe There's a difference between making difficult decisions and causing a war to break out with a fourth of the galaxy that would cause the deaths of millions at the very least. Also, maybe you've forgotten, but there were only 10,000 Jedi, nowhere near the numbers needed to fight such a powerful foe.
@@animeman8203 true. It just hurts to see these supposed peace keepers lie down and allow such things to happen
@@EmberedAsheallow is a strong word. The video showed the consequence of Jedi stepping out of the line of the republic. They also aren’t warriors like the old republic. They start trying to free slaves without any backing from the republic, they risk war with hutts and armies of mercs. Prior to having a clone army, the Jedi would probably lose. While having a clone army, they were at too busy fighting a war before being purged.
I do understand your statement for them pushing for slavery to end, but with all of the information from this video, it seemed almost unlikely that they could with all of their power.
If this population is not willing to give up slavery, then it must be done with force.
But are we willing to sacrifice millions for a few hundred thousand?
You can't stop it on this planet, and you expect them to stop it in a whole galaxy...
Just another reason why i think the jedi should have been it's own organization completely, with no official ties to the senate.
Channel been doing Wilt numbers with these videos. Something that should be black/white wound up a morally gray debate within the Republic. Wow.
I have to agree with the Jedi on this one no one wants war with the huts clan however the Jedi order still has a chance to end slavery they could have and should have done it
Okay, I have to ask: how exactly would the Hutts be able to wage war against the Republic? If their empire really is the "wild west," that would imply a complete lack of any kind of infrastructure or formal, institutionalized central authority across most of their territory. Armies and navies require vast military-industrial complexes and strong, centralized authorities to build, direct and maintain them. If Hutt space really is that "wild," then it would be akin to a handful of mafia dons and street thugs trying to face the US army in open battle...
I understand now and the lore makes perfect sense.
Still I think some of the Jedi did not think thru the best way to free the slaves. If they could not do so with the power of the Republic behind them then they could have tried to build Jedi controlled businesses and gather wealth. Then with the prospect of new and very profitable industries they could bargain with the Hutts to get them to change their slavery laws. I am not sure what industry they could start that would have such influence. However with the knowledge and abilites of the Jedi I think they could have put this plan into action even if it took hundreds of years to get it off the ground. After all look at what just 2 Sith at a time managed to accumulate after 1000 years. What was passed down to Palpatine was a seat in the Galactic Senate and with the aid of pity over the invasion of Naboo, Palpatine gained enough votes to become chancellor. Obviously it wasn't due to sentiment alone the Sith at the time had gained enough wealth and influence to make it so. And I think they also funded the creation of the clone army and a bunch of other preparations with their own funds. So don't tell me thousands of Jedi in between their duties of protecting the Republic could not gain similar wealth and influence even enough to convince the business minded Hutts. I swear I always come up with these great ideas to get stuff done whether in fiction or real life but it often seems like no one else can think of them or carry them out LOL!
Good an answer as any.. a Name is just that if no one is willing to enforce something AGAINST a facet considered outright wrong. An even IF the Republic tried it can be exceptionally Complex, difficult an even a nasty bloody affair at times too. We saw this kinda thing in real life in the old US Civil War for example.
The Jedi Order should done something similar to IMF from Mission Impossible have carefully chosen Jedi rally system enslaved being to rebel against Hutts while the Republic and Order can disavow them if things go sideways. They have done something similar to this durning the Cold War was the Sith Empire with mixed results so even after the New Sith Wars it is not out impossible to do
This lack of action and creative shows how far and stagnant the Jedi had become.
Maybe if the jedi succeeded in destroying palpatine and his plans, then the next step for anakins duties a chosen one is, together with the other jedi, end slavery in the outerrim.
Throw battle droids at the Hutts until the Hutts give up or die? 🤷
They would have done something good after the Galactic Empire fell..
I have to agree with the Jedi on this one no one wants a war with the huts clan
I always made sure, to end any Hutt I came across storywise in SWTOR, couldn't stand them.
I hate the Hutt lorewise, but same time love them in the story/galaxy, because they add quite a lot of the story, and diversity of Star Wars with species, and what goes on in the galaxy
If they would take certain criminals and turn them into slaves, that would be one thing otherwise no slavery should ever be a thing
Because the Jedi never learned to fight in the shade.
My allies were always very furtive.
The saddest part is that it happens to this day in real life an nobody does anything to stop it
4:27 Yes, we know about the jedi, but what about the huts?
The Jedi Council played politics with a master and lost. The lack of presence in the Outer Rim was intentional. You always need a foil to blame and Palp knew that. Yoda should have withdrawn and left Palpatine to his war. They were always going to be the fall guy but it wouldn’t have cost billions of lives.
Was Riloth part of the Republic?
I got a bad feeling about this
The only real difference between the Jedi and the Sith is that the Sith admit what they are
Not the Jedi way but they could overthrow the huts and end slavery I mean huts move pretty slowly sure if a hut is close enough maybe they could do damage if close but most huts operate through bounty hunters or criminals because they’re incapable.
I bet that if the Jedi had abolished slavery throughout the galaxy and outlawed it then they’d be true heroes. It’s always bothered me that the Jedi don’t seem to care about getting rid of slavery throughout the galaxy, but now I know why, because it’s illegal according to the Republic and the Jedi refuse to take the law into their own hands. I bet Anakin would have taken the law into his own hands and freed all slaves and abolished slavery throughout the galaxy, then he would’ve been a true hero.
Only criminals profit when something is restricted. And, when criminals have the monopoly it is maintained through violence. In a country or even a planet this could be possible but a universe most definitely not. Even if it were the case the Jedi could fight in every corner of the universe to end slavery it would only persist, most likely, with indentured servitude caused by debt.
Just my thoughts on it.
Makes sense. The jedi can't work miracles.
I mean of them have no jurisdiction outside of republic borders...
MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
I see a bigger problem than allowing slavery to continue, and that is that it exists at all in such an advanced civilization. How could it ever possibly be less expensive or more prudent to own a biological slave when a robot can do the work better, faster and cheaper.
The Jedi order could have ended slavery this is why count dooku was so frustrated with the Jedi order
neither the republic nor the empire spanned the entire galaxy. it's absurd to think they could impose their will anywhere. the rest is details.
Dooku is correct! An order such as the Jedi should have never gotten rapped into the Republic. I would have gone rogue and helped those even if my own order did hunt me down!
tl;dr 1.They had more important things to do, pretty much all the time.
2. Also, nobody said they had the right to impose their values on the galaxy. Diversity. A civilization both multicultural and multispecies.
3. Lastly, how many Jedi were there at any one time? You know it was actually possible to kill them?
Comment
I think it's unnecessarily harsh on the Republic. The truth is that they did indeed enforce inalienable rights in their own territory, the same as any real-world country. I'm reminded of attempts by countries in the real world to enforce democracy in other more poor, crime-ridden countries-these attempts are almost always unsuccessful and result in long drawn out conflicts. The only way the Republic could stop the practice of slavery is to dominate the entire galaxy, something that has never happened and never will happen in canon. It's also really unrealistic to expect an Order of about 10,000 Jedi to somehow be able to stop the enslavement of trillions.
No wonder Anakin turned to the darkside

Jedi Council: "Waaah, nooo, we cannot involve ourselves in the war against the Mandalorians. We are not that strong and it would be against our policy."
Revan: "Yeah? Watch me."

Jedi Council: "Waaah, nooo, we cannot involve ourselves in a conflict against the Hutts. We are not that strong and it would be against our policy."
Bullshit. They are just a bunch of overgrown slugs. You are an entire army of space wizards. You can slaughter them in a fortnight if you so wish. It is just that the Jedi prefer to uphold status quo and generally sit around with their thumbs up their asses rather than do something with those *_phenomenal cosmic powers_* of theirs.
@Hesen31 - Revan's genius plan about taking shortcut, using superweapon just created a force wound which was bad as not joining to the war.
Which could've been avoided if the Jedi crushed the "Neocrusaders" at the very beginning of their movement.
- The jedi already ended slavery at more than half of the known galaxy
Did they? Or was it ended regardless of the Jedi?
- they increased prosperity, life standards
And you assert this based on what?
- protecting peace for 1000 years
_Peace_ ? Or *_status quo_* ? The Jedi just kept in power all those who was already in power.
- the jedi couldn't provide same prosperity for 20% of the galaxy
What "prosperity"? Where do you even get this "prosperity in the Republic"?
- they couldn't become force gods
But then Separatists happen - and *suddenly* the Jedi are all too willing to go around killing anyone and everyone who dares to threaten the power of the Senate.
- But they DID defeat empires
And brought chaos, anarchy, piracy and all other glorious "freedoms" to the people of the Galaxy. Freaking thanks, good job breaking it, hero.
- end totalitarianism
Did they? Have you ever heard about Onderon? The Republic is (contrary to its name) no about democracy, it is a confederation of sovereign worlds, which can be as totalitarian as they please.
