Never heard this theory, never gave it any thought before. But he (the content creator) made enough valid points that you really can't discount the idea that Hagrid is, if not "rich", is at least comfortably well off.
I think this might be a misunderstanding of wealth. While being frugal and saving over many years can make you very comfortable, at the level of those wizarding families you have probably made several clever investments and have mailbox money coming from every direction. When you hear about obscene amounts of wealth that rich people have its not like they have a bank account somewhere with that number in it. Its an estimation of what they could have if they liquidated everything. Properties, businesses, shares in god knows what. Hagrid doesn't strike me as a shrewd Invester. More like he could have hoarded a small fortune. All of the respect and privileges you pointed out I could write off to his relationship with the headmaster.
True. I have no doubt that families like the Malfoys have plenty of passive income from various investments and collecting rent from their vast landholdings.
Mythologically, Giants are supposed to have wealth in terms of real estate and rare magical artifacts. We don't know what Hagrid's giantess mother brought to her relationship with his father? Plus we don't know what kind of wizard his father was, he may have been a curse breaker for Gringots, hence their familiarity, and he may have been paid a share of any treasure from the tombs and vaults he broke into?
It would have been funny if it turned out that Hagrid was financially richer than the Malfoys. But if that was the case, he probably could have saved Buckbeak from being executed. Even if Hagrid didn't realize he was rich or didn't care, you'd think word would have gotten out that he was loaded and people would have been hounding him for money. I don't think this theory is true but there could have been a lot of fun moments in the books if it was true.
In the wizarding world, I wouldn't consider the concept of having or giving someone a wallet to be a sign of being money minded, mainly because they don't use paper currency. Because of that, a wallet would be kinda pointless outside of housing things like ids and the like.
I'd say Hagrid could be rich if he sold all the unicorn hairs and other creature parts he collects in the forbidden forest but he doesn't sell them so not liquid / financially rich
I suppose Ollivanders has to get those cores to make wands from somewhere. Maybe Hagrid is a supplier of beast materials from time to time, whenever he's in town for a pint. Would save the trouble of going all the way back to Gringotts to withdraw some drinking money.
Hagrid should go into business with Ollivander by becoming the supplier of his unicorn hair. He could become a millionaire by selling the stuff to Ollivander and other wand makers.
It's like the old man who lives in the country story the old man's busted up has used overalls in a busted up truck but he's got the money to buy the entire town 10 times over
I agree, probably Hagrid sells and buys in the black market. Maybe that black market is in Nocturn Alley (*cough *cough, hence why he rescued Harry from it, once)
Another hint at his wealth is how familiar he is with the currency. Let's be real, 17 Sickles in a Galleon and 29 Knuts in a Sickle is an absolute mess to calculate. And yet, Hagrid seems to have no trouble with it despite not exactly presenting himself as the sharpest tool in the shed. Almost as if he handles money quite often
I like all of it though the venom thing makes less sense to me. he could talk, and they were friends. You wouldn't sell your friends organs just because they're valuable, would you? Well most people I assume and hope they wouldn't but kind of the same concept I don't think he would mostly for that but probably let Slughorn because Hagrid knew it could help people or something. But idk still a great theory.
Another channel covered the same topic quite some time ago. They also believe he has a lot of money. That channel brought up pretty much everything you did in this video...except for Hagrid having a connection with black market creatures. I found that to be quite an interesting idea.
I have to give a different perspective, to the like the unicorn hair and venum, hagrid i assume has a good relationship to most in the forest, not just the giant spider. Hence why the money doesn't matter to him.
As an essential dropout I don't think Hagrid's pay would be that great, once he was learned up a bit his pay would increase, but less we forget, Hagrid has a bit of a gambling problem as well.
What if Nicholas Flemel didn't destroy the Philosopher's Stone but instead gave it to Hagrid. I think if the two ever met, he might have taken a shine this half giant's humble and upright persona. The fact that unlike other people, Hagrid isn't greedy and he does not desire power or immortality. He, Gwap and Fang could live for centuries by drinking the elixir of life and living comfortably with the gold the stone creates.
Well hagrids father was also a wizard, could it be possible the pa was a pureblood and had money saved up? Money that hagrid couldve inherited when his father passed away? I think that is very possible
If Hagrid was rich, then Dumbledore must have been even richer. Not only did he have a Hogwart's salary for decades, with room and board provided; I assume he also made money in other ways in other roles, supreme mugwump, chief warlock of the wizengamot, his scholarly articles, on and on. So question-- where did all of Dumbledore's money go after he passed away? We know what items the Golden Trio received in the will, but what happened to all the rest of his stuff and his cash?
Knowing Dumbledore. He probably had a bunch of it donated to places like St. Mungos. Also very likely is that he bequeathed a large portion into Hogwarts, as has been stated before that students of little means (I.e. orphans) the school funds their supplies and the like.
He probably gave a large chunk to charity including the provision for students who couldn't afford the school supplies. He probably also gave some to Aberforth
I'm surprised hagrid isn't a big spender I only say tht cause of his love of magical creatures so I'm surprised he didn't buy a lot of magical creatures and asked Dumbledore to build some kind of magical creatures zoo thing And I wouldn't be surprised tht he didint already sell and collect tht venom through out the years plus we know he went to the black market connect so UK he gots the money
I think it's an absolute. Hagrid could perform magic with his umbrella (in which his wand was hidden). As we well know, a broken wand doesn't work....Ron's wand in CoS....Harry's wand in DH. And we know that the Elder Wand CAN repairs broken wands....Harry's wand at the end of DH. Ergo...logic dictates that DD MUST have repaired Hagrid's wand at some point.
Yes I believe Hagrid is wealthy, HOWEVER, only through his Salary & occasional Gambling success. I don't think he is involved in black market dealings or selling things like Acromantula Venom/Unicorn Hairs.
This is such a generous theory. Hagrid doesn’t live a complex lifestyle, but he does have several other expenses that you do not mention. He acquires multiple magical creatures throughout the series that could not have been cheap. Furthermore, Hagrid drinks quite a lot and definitely spends quite a bit of money at multiple spots drinking. I think Hagrid was more like Dobby in the sense that he wouldn’t have asked for a lot. He viewed things for a their practical purpose as opposed to what they would could provide him monetarily, ie the unicorn hair. Dumbledore badly needed Slughorn to come to Hogwarts and still provided what Slughorn considered a meager salary. I just don’t see it.
Im glad Harry was smart with his money for being his age and being rich I'm glad he didn't go and spend it the only thing I wish he would have done is buy the latest broom to keep up with it he could of been the best at catching the snitch
i am not surprised hagrid would have a lot of money. seeing how humble he lives. house on the land of the school, his own garden , no new clothes or anything fancy like that, old stuff in his house that he has grown to love, if something is broken he would fix it himself with resources he got himself as well, hunting and foraging so no need to buy groceries. without those expenses his salary would not go to waste either and would just pile up in his vault. plus the raise he got that doubled the salary when he took the post as professor for care of magical creatures in the third year harry was there. what use is luxury items for a man who has pretty much everything he could want. (edit) as some have mentioned in the comments, hagrid is known to frequent pubs and bars for a drink and a gamble. but i dont think he would go out of his way to go into debt just for a couple drinks and game of cards. sure he can drink, but it wouldnt be nearly enough to drain his finances in my opinion. as for the creatures, he is also known to have a great deal of passion and care for the creatures he takes care of. most of which i dont think he actually bought. i think most of them would have been either won in a game, belong to the school or injured creatures he nurses back to health. i think he would spend the money rather on someone else for them to enjoy. seeing how rough harry had it, he wanted to show harry that there are good people out there and that hes one of his friends he can count on.
A lot of the Chinese translation fanfics have this as a plot point of hagrid being secretly rich. I read one where the fics transmigrated mc nearly fainted in shock that hagrid had a blanket made of unicorn tail hair. In canon hagrid being rich makes sense because of all the material he gets like the unicorn tail hair mention in the actual books. If im correct unicorn tail hair is supposed to be like 10 gallons for a single strand of 1 foot of hair.
If Hagrid’s so rich, then why did he have us collect the ingredients HE needed for his Dragon-tonic using OUR money in those damned Gringotts sections in the first PS1 game?!
Based on these assumptions and cost of living/animal expenses, using a basic compound interest calculator we can assume Hagrid would have just over 55$ million saved up. A lot of money but nowhere near what we can expect the wealthiest houses to be at (250-400$ million in gold and assets)
The gifts and the animals he buys are for me the most compelling proof that he might be rich. But maybe not a vault full of gold but easy access to materials he can sell or trade to obtain those objects. Salary, we do not know and if you told me he worked for room and board I would easily believe this, also Dumbledore is very practical and manipulative why would he pay more if he doesn't need to. He keeps slaves in the kitchen, so morally not bothered that a salary is required.
The real question is how Gringot's Bank works. Modern banks loan out their depositors money. Gringots seems to just provide security for gold. The depositors must be paying the bank for the storage.
I would also like to add that he was friends with none other than Newt Scamander so who knows how many jobs he helped him with over the 40 years he was an adult, it would not surprise me if Hagrid took his summers and helped Newt with certain Fantastical Beats
I don't know if Hagrid is rich unless they have a wizarding version of direct deposit, although I don't remember if the books mention if gringotts offers a a savings branch where you get interest.
I've always assumed Hagrid is just a prolific gambler. He lives poor because he never has wealth for long , but every time he has a big score he makes the most of it. He is in the unique position of being able to do this without it hurting his life at all due to all the reasons in the video. He doesn't really NEED money so there's not really anything wrong with gambling it all away. He's a nice guy so when he scores he makes sure to use some of it to make the people he loves happy.
if he Was involved with black market dealings. i feel like hagrid wouldn't just be a "skilled collector of rare beasts & amazing haggler" he would absolutely be the don of the underworld. if he's that friendly with a gigantic man eating spider, imagine what other kinds of terrifying creatures he;s buddies with. That is a man you don't mess with. no one wants an angry spider coming after them for revenge, with millions of varying sizes of children they could send out in recon missions, or assassination. also also, he survived azkaban. i feel like that's one of those places you get sent to and either already have the reputation to survive, or you build one quickly on the inside or end up dead. plus he didn't seem super beat up after getting out, implying he was fighting for his life in there or anything
only 1 key part, i dont remember if it was harrys key or the galthvort key he had there, but if harrys key i can see the goblins beeing aware that haggried was comming to collect the item in question and we know that you cant use polyjuice potion on a giant or half giant because it do not work.
The real question is not if he is secretly wealthy but the REAL question is (since I've learned that hagrid is half giant) "How hagrid's dad did you-know -what with his mother. How could a 5' 3" inch tall wizard do it with a giantess tall as 20ft. I mean how did the logistics work. I can't imagine how it'd be like putting a needle through a glass bottle. IDK. Did the giantess even feel it?
I would think that being Groundskeeper would have one of the highest salaries out there, simply for the risk the Groundskeeper would take with dealing with dangerous magical creatures on a daily basis. Risk goes up, price goes up, no matter that Hagrid is half-Giant! Then there's also the Professor salary he earns for Care of Magical Creatures. If not crazy wealthy, I am sure he's pretty damned comfortable. I don't think that Snape, or later Professor McGonagall ever lowered his salary after Dumbledore passed.
I think we can safely assume Hagrid makes at least as much as Albus offered Dobby. That's 10 Galleons a week. So, let's do the math. 52 weeks x 10 = 520. 520 x 48 years = 24,960 Galleons. That is a verifiable hoard worthy of a dragon's egg... That's assuming he only made what Dobby was offered... That also doesn't account for any compound interest. If we do the math for compound interest over 48 years at 10 Galleons a week, assuming about 7% interest, we come to 169,826 Galleons. If I was doing exactly what I loved in life, and had that kinda coin... I would be that happy nonchalant too. When we convert his wealth into USD, it's not as much. We're looking at about $1,127,644.64. Wizarding money seems to go a lot further in the wizarding world than Money in the muggle world. Remember, this is assuming he only made what was offered to Dobby.
There’s also his complete and seemingly effortless conversion of currency that uses two completely different PRIME factors for exchange rates. I ask you, off the top of your head, if I hand over 3 galleons for something that costs 2 galleons and 12 knuts, what the change due back in sickles and knuts?
Hagrid was also the most powerful wizard, even more so more powerful then voldamort and albus even with the god wand. He is the only wizard in the movies to complete a spell without saying a single word.
@theophiled wrong. There are plenty of instances where they already said the spell and kept it going. Hagrid is the only wizard to do a spell without ever saying a word. And without a wand.
I always thought that Dumbledore probably funneled or gave Hagrid the rights to one of his many patents. Say, on dragons blood. And then yes he probably did a lot and I mean a lot of black market dealings.
Just use Dobby's salary as an example. 520 galleons per year, for 50 years is 26000 galleons. $6.64/galleon means he's got a $172k(USD) nest egg. Not rich, but not poor either.
Hagrid would have accumulated a lot of savings yes, but richer than Potter or Malfoy? I think not. It doesn't look like Hagrid is into investments and I can't imagine the wizarding world's banks can give much interest. In fact, you may have to pay them to keep stuff safe. What works in Hagrid's favour is dealing in magical creatures, the care for them, or raising the young and trading them off, or consultancy etc. Hagrid travelling the world to work with other caregivers or traders in magical creatures is strong hints he is a consultant and is paid handsomely. That said, he may have to spend money to take care of his only family, Grawp. I imagine Hagrid is paying the Centaurs to help Grawp in the Forbidden forest. Though after Dumbledore's death and the defeat of Voldemort, Grawp may also have access to Hogwarts' canteen. :)
His mum was a giantess, so let's consider her size for a moment. Being married to his dad, one would think their home had to be of considerable size for her to live in, too. Sounds like a rather hefty price tag on that.. unless it was a generational home also? Perhaps a castle would afford her height? Hmmmm 😅
I don’t think Hagrid is saving his money. It’s been implied that he is a massive drunk, and it takes a lot more for him to get drunk. I don’t know about you, but I have known plenty of drunks that will spend their whole paycheck at the bar.

I've seen this theory on The Super Carlin Brothers. They now like to call him Swagrid,
In the wizarding world, I wouldn't consider the concept of having or giving someone a wallet to be a sign of being money minded, mainly because they don't use paper currency.
Would save the trouble of going all the way back to Gringotts to withdraw some drinking money.
unlike slughorn lol
Hagrid should go into business with Ollivander by becoming the supplier of his unicorn hair. He could become a millionaire by selling the stuff to Ollivander and other wand makers.
I agree with your assessment of the dark market dealing angle being a clue. That is a good catch.
One thing is the physical wealth in money, another, is in the people you keep as company of friends
Hagrid has a penchant for drinking and gambling. That is where his money goes.
And being half-giant, he can drink A LOT.
I wonder if hagrid got 2 salaries after he became teacher as well
Probably, double the work gets double the pay
One would hope so.
Gambling is a very expensive hobby my friend
Hagrid might have been the only child of his father, who died when he was a child, his money could have come from his father.
Another amazing video! Glad to hear about Haggord again^^. As a drinker, tabs can get up there
I'm surprised hagrid isn't a big spender I only say tht cause of his love of magical creatures so I'm surprised he didn't buy a lot of magical creatures and asked Dumbledore to build some kind of magical creatures zoo thing And I wouldn't be surprised tht he didint already sell and collect tht venom through out the years plus we know he went to the black market connect so UK he gots the money
Was there ever a video asking "Did Dumbledoor repair Hagrid's wand?" Just seems he was able to use magic better during 'Half Blood Prince'.
I remember this theory from SCB. I really love their videos but I hate that they're being sponsored by BetterHelp
Kind of odd that Hagrid would give Harry a wallet, seeing as how wizard society doesn't seem to have paper money.
its 2 am and im watching this.. i guess its better than creepin on some random summer beach album
One issue Hagrid wasn't a teacher the majority of the time. He was basically a zoo keeper. Probably about 54 grand a year.
Very interesting theory. It is pleasant to think that Hagrid has plenty of money.
My boy Hagrid be getting around 😅😅😂
If Hagrid’s so rich, then why did he have us collect the ingredients HE needed for his Dragon-tonic using OUR money in those damned Gringotts sections in the first PS1 game?!
You don't stay rich by spending you own money
"compounds" in what? Is gringotts offering interest on deposits? Is there a stock or bond market for wizarding businesses?
That’d be an interesting video: who was the skull wearing a crown in the vault. 🤔
only 1 key part, i dont remember if it was harrys key or the galthvort key he had there, but if harrys key i can see the goblins beeing aware that haggried was comming to collect the item in question and we know that you cant use polyjuice potion on a giant or half giant because it do not work.
The Carlin Brothers did this theory like, years ago. Lol
Yea I have a hard time watching content I've already seen just reworded or with some different evidence...
SWAGRIG!!
I would also think that hagrid would get paid more because of the potentially dangerous situations of his job, (especially since he can't use magic)
Purchasing rare animals especially from black market. That can't be cheap.
Dude he spent it all on beer and magical creature treats
Remember, this is assuming he only made what was offered to Dobby.
dont forget he pays for Premium in his Motorcycle🏍
There’s also his complete and seemingly effortless conversion of currency that uses two completely different PRIME factors for exchange rates. I ask you, off the top of your head, if I hand over 3 galleons for something that costs 2 galleons and 12 knuts, what the change due back in sickles and knuts?
Yeah that's right, someone call Madame Maxime and show'er what she missed.
Hagrid was also the most powerful wizard, even more so more powerful then voldamort and albus even with the god wand. He is the only wizard in the movies to complete a spell without saying a single word.
I suppose this is a joke but just in case, there are plenty example of wizards doing wordless magic in the movies
@theophiled wrong. There are plenty of instances where they already said the spell and kept it going. Hagrid is the only wizard to do a spell without ever saying a word. And without a wand.
@@swinganamiss1194 😂 learn to read books
I always thought that Dumbledore probably funneled or gave Hagrid the rights to one of his many patents. Say, on dragons blood.
And then yes he probably did a lot and I mean a lot of black market dealings.
Just use Dobby's salary as an example. 520 galleons per year, for 50 years is 26000 galleons. $6.64/galleon means he's got a $172k(USD) nest egg. Not rich, but not poor either.
Bet that dragon egg was very expensive
Swagrid
His mum was a giantess, so let's consider her size for a moment. Being married to his dad, one would think their home had to be of considerable size for her to live in, too. Sounds like a rather hefty price tag on that.. unless it was a generational home also? Perhaps a castle would afford her height? Hmmmm 😅
Harry Potter economics cannot be taken seriously. Putting stuff in a vault is not "investing" it.
I'm pretty sure the malfoys are hundred billionaires. They are the richest wizard family in the UK.
Who gets Harris’s wealth after he passes, his brother or harry?
didnt he not get a dragon from "a guy down the pup"
Are you not giving credit to the supercarlinbrothera for this? 😂
The whole idea behind having money in a wizard community still confuses me.
Hagrid probably didn't notice how much money he had
Considering that the school owns slaves who provide everything that the staff could ever want, all the staff should be rich.
Hagrid loves his lifestyle and also considers it bad manners to mention his wealth or lack of wealth..
I want this theory to be true, Hagrid deserves to be rich.
So what you're saying is that Hagrid is the Ron Swanson of the Potterverse
Not gonna lie, if I was rich, I’d live like Hagrid lol. Little with some woods and pastures for my horses lol.
a schools grounds keeper is a real job with similar perks, and obviously they aren’t wealthy
I don’t think Hagrid is saving his money. It’s been implied that he is a massive drunk, and it takes a lot more for him to get drunk. I don’t know about you, but I have known plenty of drunks that will spend their whole paycheck at the bar.
