Less weight, display clarity and better buttons. Add to that tough solar and atomic and reasonable price. You just made me order a GW-M5610. Nice review!
Definitely I have many G-Shocks and many that are atomic, in fact my latest is the GW-M5610BC-1JF tough solar multi band6 and manual time adjustment is no problem!
Excellent video and an honest comparison, I just subscribed. I have a DW5000SL so my screwback desire is satisfied with that and it has been my daily wear for the last 6 years, I am currently waiting on a delivery of a GW-S5600 that I plan on putting on a regular bezel and strap
As a personal trainer I use the gw5000. I press the buttons throughout the day zero issues. Love it. Best of all 100% made in Japan, Sleek, and comfortable 👌
Excellent vid, i've been wearing the gw-m5600 since 2009, never misses a beat, battery always on full, worn in saunas, in the sea, down the gym, just give it a wash & looks as good as new.
I bought a GW5000 when they first were released in 2009, still have that watch. The buttons were very hard to push. However, I recently purchased a GW5000 manufactured in March 2020 and the buttons are exactly the same spring strength as my GW5610 - they have made this correction just recently. GW5000 is a GREAT watch!
I have both the DW5600 and the GWM 5610. I'm also thinking about buying the GW5000 because it's made of steel, seems like it's going to last longer than the other ones.
Your Square G Battle was why I ultimately wound up with the GW-5000-1JF. It's an absolutely beautiful watch that draws no attention to itself, looks like a Wal-Mart Special, but is built just as well quality-wise as the MT-G lineup (but without being the size of Big Ben). That being said, it is a bit $$ to wear to work (at about $300), but the quality of the body and the strap make up for it and then some. Jason
$38 for 5600, simplest cleanest design. Bright light, tough as nails, legible, people’s batteries last often 10-15 years. Only loses a couple seconds a month. You can regulate them to make them run almost perfectly. If someone steals it or you lose it, it was only $38. The only flaw I can see is the recessed adjust button. Oh well, nothing is perfect. This watch comes close though. New battery is about $2. I wish there were more products like this one.
yeah man i love my 5610. you never worry about running out battery and setting the time. pop it onto your wrist and forget about it until your funeral. it is indeed my ideology of a smart watch. not too long ago i replaced the worn out resin with a full metal mod you can get from ali. incredible upgrade
Good review and I fully agree with your conclusion. I have both the GW-5000 and GWM5610 but very rarely wear the former. The 5610 is just perfect everyday- the goldilocks watch as you say
@@andrewc4622 not the guy you asked but with my current g shock i change my battery at midnight everyday as i inherited 262,000 CTL1616 cells from my grandfather (he had a few factories and warehouses from his business) i milled a custom case back that has a battery port, which i hate as getting it to line up was a pain
Japanese Quartz movement is accurate enough where I'm not going to sweat the atomic update every day. But then again, I'm also not sweating the battery swap in 3 years. For the difference in cost, you can buy enough batteries to power the basic g-shock for 30 years. Multiple alarms are a nice feature though. Casio must leave it off intentionally just to get people to upgrade since they have far cheaper casios with multiple alarms and world time.
I found my old 5600. had it since I was 16 and I'm almost 30 now. younger version of me was dumb and intentionally tried to destroy the watch but nothing I did ever worked. even ran the thing over and it still works.
The dw-5600 in my opinion is the better value . Basic , tough and inexpensive . It's no big deal to have to replace a battery every 5 yrs or so and it's not that tough setting daylight savings time changes . If the 5610 was closer to the price of the dw5600 then I would choose the 5610 . 5610 is over priced in my opinion
If you can change your own battery it's not as big of a deal I think, if I see a watch that's really cool but doesnt have solar I'd still get it. But luckily almost all g shocks have a lower and higher end version and the higher end usually have tough solar.
The flagship models are those with the 3459/61 module. Having Bluetooth, fading backlight, reminders, etc. The module is used in the full medal models, but also in resin models like the GW-B5600
GW 5000. I’m not sure if it’s just me but I hate when I press a button accidentally and end up in the wrong mode. Having harder buttons makes it to where I don’t have to worry about that. That alone is worth the money for me. Not to mention the history it follows.
My first and only G SHOCK is a DW6600. A few years after wearing it daily, the plastic surrounding the function buttons began to break off, eventually exposing the round, plastic housing completely. Ironically, I wear this watch to the gym. The exposed watchband pins, plus the function buttons, gives the impression there are four buttons on each side of the housing! I'm considering purchasing a square G SHOCK now and debating whether the GW5000 is worth the cost given my experience with the DW6600, or, have the plastic components on the GW5610 improved over the DW6600? Obviously, purchasing a GW5610 won't impact my budget as bad as the GW5000. BTW, great comparison video. Matter of fact, I enjoy viewing ALL of your videos and value your opinion. Thanks.
Under The Bus Thanks for the info! I don't have the DW6600 so I can't really comment on the plastic quality vs the GW-M5610. I've had my 5610 since August and it still looks almost like new. It's nice how you can rub out scuffs on the resin with just an eraser head.
I agree with you and on top of all of that traveling overseas going through security you don't have to worry about it being stolen or being lost as the cost is not nearly as much. good review and perspective.
1:01 couple of points. The battery of a DW-5600 lasts around 5ish years with normal use. It's recommended to replace and lubricate the O ring every 5ish years to maintain good water resistance. So even though a solar cell can last 10-20 years, it's kind of redundant if you're changing the seals around the same time a cheap normal battery replacement is due. Solar charging is useful though if a watch has atomic timekeeping, due to increased power consumption. But if you don't really need atomic time, you don't really need solar. It also only takes less than a minute to manually sync a DW-5600 to an online atomic clock. A digital watch is far, far easier to set than an analogue one, as you simply need to reset the second counter, instead of painstakingly aligning a minute hand and carefully pressing down a crown. Even if you forget, the watch will only run a few seconds fast a month, and will remain accurate to the minute for several months. Another thing to remember, is that for people who live in darker areas of the world, or people who live outside the atomic tower ranges, solar-atomic is much worse than a simple battery watch.
My daily beater is the GW-M5610, I have only had it 12 months but it is the ideal size for the smaller wrist, is solar powered, radio controlled with 200M water resistance, the perfect watch for me.
I recently bought a GW B5600, a resin Bluetooth square. It has solar power and multiband 6, as well as world time, five alarms, reminders, and location logging via the G Shock app. It's a little blingy with a gold screen surround, and updates time from your phone. If only it had the STM display of the more expensive full metal squares.
Just got a GW M5610u. Totally agree. It’s a great watch, although I feel it wears a little small on my 7 1/2” wrist. I got a Rangeman two days later so that my new daily wearer, but I will still keep the square in my rotation.
of the three, I'd have to go with DW5600E. weakest link in these G-Shocks(or any resin watches) is the strap. they always seem to break after couple years... considering what DW5600E costs, around $40(Target has it on sale right now for $25), easy and cheap replacement by the time battery runs out. I like the fact that you can see the current time while using the timing functions, something Casio really need to rethink in their higher end modules... there is, I think a solution to the strap problem in the model GWS5600-1JF, one with carbon fiber strap and titanium case back that is atomic and solar, but cost prohibitive at around $240... but if you are looking for a serious daily driver with longevity, might be the one. Good vid. really enjoying these.
I don't agree with your comments on the 5600e, the battery do last a very long time and the backlight is stronger than the others but your comment on the contrast ratio on the display are very interesting and true, never noticed that but i do now.
Have to agree with you there. I've got the GW-5000, a M5610BC-1JF, a basic 5600E and this list just keeps on growing. They all work(the most important thing) and look(the less important thing) great. Just can't get over that red line surround on the basic 5610. It kind of glares at you, but that's just a personal observation. Others may feel different, and that's just fine too. To each his or her own. I love my screw back though!
Thanks for the informative video! I had the basic square, but the battery died. Sick of wearing my Rolex (way too blingy and attracts too much attention…116710). I’m going to get the GWM-5610 and then get the armour mod kit from Ali Express.
If I’m not mistaken, all metal screw backs buttons are stiff. With a reliable metal screw backs comes with a reliable stiff buttons. They could be mud resistant maybe it’s stiffer meaning there’s more gaskets.
The 5610 would be my choice, I purchased one and found the alarm volume so quiet it was useless, I returned the watch which is a shame as it would otherwise have been a great daily watch.
Cant believe I am Hooked on square watches. great value at and a great quality. Have the old faithful Casio F91W-1, decided to get the DW5600E as an upgrade, just wanted a bigger scale watch the oldy was looking kinda small. But worked perfectly. I wont be getting the solar and atomic time keeping. Many reviews of poor signal and failing, to update. Its not a big deal going to the atomic site and adjusting time once a year . and it took 20 seconds. is it really that big of a deal. you pay more but when they fail they tend to be just pass warranty.
agreed, the 5000 back is beautiful, but you can't see the back while you're wearing it and if your need for the watch is a fitness/everyday beater, then the 5000 isn't quite as functional.
I own 5 g shocks, including a GWM-5610 and 2 other “solar atomic” models..they’re all great..tough to pick a favorite, but I do love the maintenance-free aspect of the solar models
I had the GW 5000 and the alarm was too quiet and hard to set due to the stiff recessed buttons. The auto EL backlight wasn't reliable either. Everyone seems to want one but this review is telling the facts. It's like buying a solid gold mousetrap - beautiful to look at but so what?
It is nice that what is selected here is what I ordered which is the GW-5610. I did a lot of specs and price comparison too. The price is also fair compare to other higher price model with the same specs.
The 5000 is just a head scratcher as far as functionality goes. The DLC backplate is pointless and is largely invisible when the watch is being worn. As far as corrosion protection, is ANYBODY having problems with their stainless steel backplates rusting out? I think not.The all metal housing is probably more durable but the resin bodied squares are legends in durability anyway. So since the 5610 has IDENTICAL features to the 5000, the only REAL benefit I’m seeing is it has softer more comfortable straps... is that really worth $200 more? I find them perfectly comfy as is. I think the 5000 model is grossly overpriced and any of the “premium” features are dubious at best. It DOES look better than the other too, though.
I just ordered the G5600E, which I believe has the same features as the GW-M5610, but without the Atomic timekeeping. I didn't see the need for me to have that feature, it's not hard to set the time on these things, and I don't need that much accuracy. But I did want the other added features of Tough Solar, World Time, EL backlight (I *think* it does the Auto EL, too), 24 hour countdown timer & stopwatch. It seems to be a model in between the the DW-5600 and the 5610, which get more attention.
I got the 5610 last week, and the one thing that kills me is that you can't see the current time when using the timer or stopwatch. I use the timer all the time and I don't know what they were thinking when they decided to not show the current time in the smaller box in timer mode. I'm thinking of getting the classic 5600 just for the current time display on the timer.
Anyone interested in this topic may want to check out the following chart which shows what modes each module displays an alternate time in, as well as the corresponding watch models that use each module: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-Shock#Modules I had the same issue with my 5610, but primarily use the stopwatch, which, unlike the timer, doesn't display current time on the 5600. There are solar square GWX models that display current time in stopwatch and timer, but they are limited to about 2 hours (59.99) / 100 (99.99) minutes as a result. The non-solar DW-5600 models seem to be the only option for displaying in both modes and timing more than 2 hours, but using functions drains the battery and I'd kill this one fast, so I stuck with the solar 5610. Best-
I get how it could be annoying to not have them on the same screen at the same time, but I'm curious: if you start the countdown timer (or stopwatch) and then cycle back to timekeeping mode, does the timer and/or stopwatch keep going so you can return to it later, or does it reset itself automatically when you leave timer/stopwatch mode?
@@Lecso1972 When using the count down you can cycle to the time keeping mode, once the time is up the alarm will start. To silence it one can only press the reset button, without the need of cycling out of time keeping. With the chronograph you can also cycle out and see the time keeping, the chrono will be running on the back ground. But to see how long it has been, to stop it, or to use the split timer one has to go back to the timer.
Just go with timex Ironman. Half the price, same ruggedness, buttons are much bigger an easier to push, and the module is more user friendly. Plus more legible lcd with higher contrast and large digits. Beats the 5610 in each and every aspect.
I have an Ironman Triathlon that I bought in 1992. I have replaced the strap 5 or 6 times and a couple of segments have stopped working, but it just keeps on going.
The problem is that the colours on the M5610 just don’t work for me. The red line around the edge of the crystal is on the orangey side and the baby blue writing at the bottom left clashed badly with the orangey-red colour. It’s a great shame Casio don’t do this watch either in neutral colours or with a single splash of red like on the (negative display) M5610BB but as it is I just can’t go with it...
I`m still wearing my DW5600C i got in 1988, looked at the 5610 series but it looks like they are shutting down the civilian atomic signal transmitter in a few years so that function will become useless. Casio is pushing the Bluetooth sync now for the USA as it will work through your cell phone to sync.
There is a petition floating around to try to keep it going , it is a bummer lol i have a Atomic wall clock that will basically be junk if it happens (no way to set it manually ) it is part of a fairly long list of things to be axed as part of the next round of budget cuts.
I’ve been using the “Clock Wave” app on my iPhone which allows me to sync to atomic time using my phone. I was never really able to get the watch to sync with the tower in CO.

gshuler13 I like the look of the watch but I'm not a fan of negative display watches for everyday use. I have a GWX-5600c with a negative display and it can't match the legibility of my GW-M5610. Sharp-looking watch though :)
I just wish the 5610 had a timer that would go less than 1min, and would have auto repeat. I need this for workouts :-( The 5600 has that. So weird why the 5610 does not.
I have that basic 5600 and for some reason, it recently stopped making any beeps when I push the mode button. Does anybody know why & how I can fix that?
Less weight, display clarity and better buttons. Add to that tough solar and atomic and reasonable price.

Thank you very much for pointing this out. The beep/alarm is one of my determining factors when I'm out buying Casio watches.
I think I'll upgrade from the DW-5600 to the GW-M5610. Good video. For me it's all about the legibility.
My personal favorite is the GW-5000. I currently own a DW-5600E, and I’m planning to upgrade in the near future to the GW-5000.
Agreed on all of this. Love my GWM5610
5610, 6 years in never missed a beat. Bullet proof!, love it 👍
I can’t believe is a bulletproof..
5610 love the watch so much I have it in three different colourways.....
Thanks, you just saved me $200.
I LIKE THE M BUT THE 5000 BACK IT IS SO NICE ?? :)
agreed, the 5000 back is beautiful, but you can't see the back while you're wearing it and if your need for the watch is a fitness/everyday beater, then the 5000 isn't quite as functional.
Same.
Nice comparison! I am waiting for my 5610 to come today!
Do a mod on the 5610 and it makes it a killer watch.
Would have used the 5610 but the atomic time isn't available where I live. Thanks for the video!
Get the Bluetooth one much better
@@yorusuyasoul69420 yeah it is, I'm considering on buying the gwb5600hr, looks awesome 👌
I love the King G-Shock GXW-56-1
I own 5 g shocks, including a GWM-5610 and 2 other “solar atomic” models..they’re all great..tough to pick a favorite, but I do love the maintenance-free aspect of the solar models
I used to live in Los Angeles. Atomic sync worked maybe 5 times a year. Now I live in Hawaii and of course it would never work here.
It still keeps time as good as any quartz watch though right?
Move to a civilized country, problem solved.
Wuchtamsel lol, Hawaii is a US state, not a country.
@@thehotsixer1 It was before The United States invaded it and took it over. That was regime change bigtime.
I had the GW 5000 and the alarm was too quiet and hard to set due to the stiff recessed buttons. The auto EL backlight wasn't reliable either. Everyone seems to want one but this review is telling the facts. It's like buying a solid gold mousetrap - beautiful to look at but so what?
that comparsion was on point and can be used for so many g shocks
I’m looking ro buy my first g-shock watch. I narrowed it down to 5610-1, 7900-1, 6900-1. Overall, which is the best watch out of these 3?
Which one is smaller?
I would definitely go with the screwback the only thing I don't like is the tough solar feature.
Great choice! I might be telling you or myself since I bought mine today. Great video
The gw 5000 strap's costs 17 bucks
Concordo com o seu ponto de vista! Observou pequenos detalhes que, no uso diário, tornam-se grandes obstáculos ou vantagens como no caso do DW5610.
You just saved me hundreds....bless ya...
Thats the one I wear as my daily beater. It has become my current favorite.
very good informative review, thanks
I just ordered the G5600E, which I believe has the same features as the GW-M5610, but without the Atomic timekeeping. I didn't see the need for me to have that feature, it's not hard to set the time on these things, and I don't need that much accuracy. But I did want the other added features of Tough Solar, World Time, EL backlight (I *think* it does the Auto EL, too), 24 hour countdown timer & stopwatch. It seems to be a model in between the the DW-5600 and the 5610, which get more attention.
No deos not have tough solar or rcvd the 5600e, i would recommend the 5610 has all the function you mentioned, and only 80 pounds on amazon
Do you know the difference between the us version vs japan of the GW-M5610?
5610 is my favourite I find it more comfortable on wrist than the 5000
Wher did u buy the GW-5000 G-shock ? I want 1 too plzzz give me a link .
Anyone interested in this topic may want to check out the following chart which shows what modes each module displays an alternate time in, as well as the corresponding watch models that use each module: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-Shock#Modules
I had the same issue with my 5610, but primarily use the stopwatch, which, unlike the timer, doesn't display current time on the 5600.
@@Lecso1972
When using the count down you can cycle to the time keeping mode, once the time is up the alarm will start. To silence it one can only press the reset button, without the need of cycling out of time keeping.
With the chronograph you can also cycle out and see the time keeping, the chrono will be running on the back ground.
But to see how long it has been, to stop it, or to use the split timer one has to go back to the timer.
That issue has since been resolved. The “1JF” upgrade is the one to buy now.
Does the gwm5610 fit the same that the dw5600? I mean, using the same strap do you put them on the same hole on the wrist?
Just go with timex Ironman. Half the price, same ruggedness, buttons are much bigger an easier to push, and the module is more user friendly. Plus more legible lcd with higher contrast and large digits. Beats the 5610 in each and every aspect.
I have an Ironman Triathlon that I bought in 1992. I have replaced the strap 5 or 6 times and a couple of segments have stopped working, but it just keeps on going.
Hi there! I still am wondering weather you would sell the ge5000
@ᴊᴏʀɪᴄ Got a recommendation for something like that with a positive display?
I thought that but once wearing it I like it, bit retro style
Great Video!!! 👍
Oh, that's a bummer! One endearing thing about G-Shocks is how wholly independent they are.
Is resisting in mud ? Or sand .. ? The gwm5610
What is the problem to change the battery in dw 5600 ??? It takes 15 minutes every 2 years )))
I actually use a DW9052. It has all the basic features / functions & the display is easy to see.
I'm very confused. How does the GW-B5600BC compare to these? It has Bluetooth, is that the only difference to the 5610?
Does anyone know if the GW 5000u (updated version) has a different button and display clarity experience than the GW 5000 shown here?
The same goes for the updated versions in 2021, isn’t it?
The 5610 is the best watch for daily wear the 5000 is heavier and a bit boring on the wrist but a bit larger
G-5600E-1DR
I think the GW-5000 has the best display, while the DW-5600E has the worst display of them all.
Any good suggestions where to buy a 5610?
daniel tomas yu You can probably get the best deal on eBay. Just make sure the seller has decent feedback and ships fairly quickly.
DDW Reviews any particular seller in ebay that you recommend?
daniel tomas yu get it from here. Best deal IMO

Amazon only 80 pounds 👍
I want to buy 5610 with negative display... Will it be worth to spend that extra dollars?
Positive display is much more clearer to read in any condition.... I would avoid the negative display personally
So you want to buy a watch that you can't see the time ?
Very helpful video my friend. Thankyou
I agree 100%. I own this watch, it is great.
Did you consider the negative display 5610 with the combi bracelet?
gshuler13 I like the look of the watch but I'm not a fan of negative display watches for everyday use. I have a GWX-5600c with a negative display and it can't match the legibility of my GW-M5610. Sharp-looking watch though :)
Would you selll or trade the gw5000?
I got a 5610 its great.
like these g shock vids. thanx
Yaaay you picked the one I own!
DW5600E all time best with affordable price 🎉
Great, so I ordered the best one today!
Which was?
