I’m old enough to have had the original back in the early 80s, and they were all built like this back then the way I remember them. Steel core with a screw down case back. Heavy. Built like a brick shithouse. I wasn’t aware that they still built any like the old ones. Maybe I need to get one.
A man after my own heart. Been enjoying this exact watch for a few months myself. The U is actually a really nice upgrade from the previous 5000. The module has more features, like setting the LED backlight duration(non U was 1.5 seconds only), and being able to see the time while the stopwatch is running(non U shows hours elapsed). I thought I would like the EL backlight more because it’s more symmetrical as you mentioned, but the pros of the LED far outweigh the hotspot issue for me. The life of an LED is wayyy longer, and it’s much more shock-resistant than the EL backlight from what I’ve read. Congrats on another great video! Looking forward to the next one. 👊

The LED on the new U models looks like a real downgrade from the EL. I have a GW-M5610 with the EL back light and they have made the new GW-M5600U an LED too.

This will be my next purchase. I already have the G5600UE and GWM5610U. But I like the idea of having a metal case. The plastic cased G-Shocks hold up just fine though. My DW5600e is almost 8 years old and has stood up to everything I've ever put it through. I recently bought a new bezel and strap for it so it looks like new again.
You won't regret it. And I'm with ya - All the Squares are just straight up tanks. And when they finally look a little too weathered, just replace the resin and BOOM. New watch. Cheers!
@@dominicscalise Oh and as for the LED backlight it's actually a big improvement over the old EL backlight from the previous module. My old GWM5610 had the same module that the previous GW-5000 had. The EL was duller then that of the basic 5600e and it also wouldn't stay on for more then 1.5 seconds. The new LED is kind of a throw back to the DW5000c or DW5600c. The backlights in those watches was horrible! But the placement of the LED and "hot spot" as you said is in the same spot as the original G-Shocks. So kinda cool, but I guess it'll bug you if you need things to be perfect. But then again most newer G-Shocks use LED backlights these days.
Great review! This is the only gshock I own and it is truly solid. I'd give it 9/10. I wish it had the green backlight. You're right about nobody noticing it as a pretty high end digital watch. I've had mine for about a year and I have had a couple positive comments about my "retro" watch but that's it, which is totally fine with me. I've got other watches for dressier occasions but the 5000u is my daily driver.
LOVE mine. The upgrades are fantastic. As a Brit, I appreciate having the date the right way round. I use this watch for the gym or if i really need to be on time that day. After long term use, my only 3 gripes are... 1. mineral crystal. if you're going to do DLC on the back, put sapphire on the front, casio. especially at this price. 2. the buttons are too small to use easily. it should have larger buttons like the metal square g shocks or gA2100. 3. the previous version backlight was uniform but didn't last long enough. This version's lasts long enough but has a hotspot on the left of the screen like a F91W. bring back the old backlight but make it last longer. who cares if this drains the battery, it's solar powered.
Probably should have sapphire. My GW-M5610 has some scratches on the display because the crystal isn't tough enough, in terms of scratch resistance, as it should be in a watch whose purpose is toughness. Although, to be fair, I've heard that mineral crystal is more shatter resistant than sapphire.
@@folksurvival The shatter factor is why I would prefer mineral on a beater watch. Sapphire maybe on a $9000 MT-G or MT-R. The raised bezel prevents most of the scratching anyway.

Great review, different, the best G Shock in the real world and the only watch you’ll really ever need. Want one. I have a similarly built DW-5200, the ‘hero’, which I bought in October 1984 and it’s still going well. It’s the model which featured in an advertisement where they used it as a hockey puck! The U model improved things by being able to display the day and date in different formats. The time shows in all modes at the top right. The light may not be even, but it won’t dim over time like the previous style one. Love your photography.
Thank you for the review, I love this watch. Added the Gen 2 Casio Combi bracelet, which upgrades the watch fit and feel to a new level and offers a quick on and off the wrist, better weight distribution, and even better breathing. That said, the genuine Casio Gen 2 bracelet (has the matching dimples to the case) is not inexpensive ($150-$200) depending on seller. It makes it a ~$500 more dressy watch if you go all the way and it is stealth.Getting the bracelet on is an exercise in patience (30 min) for an amateur like myself, but worth it.
Been wearing one for almost two years straight. It’s the best. Even the new DW-5040 isn’t as comfortable nor does it feel as special and it’s an 40th anniversary model. I love the DW5600 and the GWM5610, but the GW5000U is ideal. I want to buy a second just to keep fresh and wear only on dress up days.
I’m glad you mentioned the DW-5040, I was so torn between that and the 5000. I was willing to give up solar but I kept seeing comments here and there(and here) saying it wasn’t quite as supple as the 5000 resin. I finally went with the 5000.
I bought the basic square model in 2010 and the battery just went out last week, That’s 14 years and the basic model isn’t even solar powered. Got a new battery installed today for $20. I also have a Rolex explorer that has to be serviced every 4 years at $900 each servicing which comes out to $2700 in the last 14 years. $20 vs $2700.
I own this watch. The features are amazing, but it fits differently compared to the flat back models. The screw back makes the watch a bit thicker, but the length of the strap is the same. Because the extra thickness is under the case, the watch will fit tighter on certain wrists. In my case, I can only get it to fit either a little too tight, or a little too loose. I will sell this one and get a 5610u instead.
I was looking at this watch, but ultimately chose the GW-S5600U-1JF. The watch I chose uses the same module, but has a titanium back and carbon fiber band. While it isn’t made in Japan, it is JDM. Great review!

The S5600 is a great watch, such a unique look, one of my personal favorites in terms of design. but I sold mine because that CF band is incredibly stiff, to the point where the watch floats on the wrist because the band won’t contour to the shape of your wrist.
Great review. I’ve worn lots of G squares but putting the 5000u on changed everything. All of my watches have been sitting in the box since I received mine. It really makes me consider getting rid of them all because the 5000u is just so good.
I got a 5610U and a 5000U, but I returned the 5000U because the buttons were just so hard to press. I can press the 5610 buttons without thinking much, but I have to actually think when I press the buttons in the 5000, since the buttons are 2-3x more stiff and require a deeper push depth to actuate (need to use side of finger or fingernail)
Excellent video, bud. I totally agree with your friend, it is a watch you have to experience. I never liked squares much before until I tried this one out. It's an excellent watch with reassuring weight that makes it feel quite substantial. Nice when you're used to mechanical watches. The LED backlight is a welcome upgrade for me as it bodes well for its longevity. I watched somewhere on YT that the chip for EL backlights are the first to break on most older G-Shocks.
I’m so glad I bought this watch. All those little features,like having the date/month the Euro way round & having the light come on when you raise your wrist in the dark,combined with the premium feel and weight of the watch,along with it’s under the radar look really make this watch a star. Pretty tricky to get hold of one here in The U.K,and prices are shooting up,even for used ones.

I've got three watches. A Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (empty battery at the moment), a Seiko 5 (have to time adjust today manually because of wintertime) and the Casio GW5610U on a combi-bracelet. The Casio is my favourite. Still not convinced if the screw down caseback plus weight is worth the effort and cost moving from GW5610 to a GW5000. Nice video, i can relate to your view and opinions on watches.
The GW5000 can truly be my only watch. The GW-5000 reigns supreme in my books. Perfect size, rarely looks out of place, super supple strap and perfect heft. Being able to wear a premium G-Shock care free is extremely liberating. As others have mentioned, sapphire crystal make it the perfect watch. I enjoy wearing it more than most of my more expensive mechanicals! I work in aviation and it get's banged around against aircraft during inspections and flight decks, been scuba diving it and wear It just about anywhere. As Dominic stated, its a completely different feel on the wrist compared to a dw5600. It truly does feel special. It's the "datejust" of G-shock's. Great video by the way! You just gained a new subscriber.

I just bought a slightly used one for 180 USD. Excited for the GW5000U to arrive! I initially thought about getting a DW5600 or GWM5610 but I just think this would be the best one. Great video!
You should give the GM-B5000 a try. It's another one where you have to get it on wrist to "get it," but it's very premium over the GW-5000U. And I say that as a huge fan of the GW-5000. Give it a try.

Love your review. This is one of the best GShock. I wanted this but price kind of premium for this one. Therefore I recently add the GWB5600SL5 to my collection. Where I stay multiband does not work. So, having bluetooth to sync time is good enough for me. Plus I still have multiband 6 if I travel to a country that support it.

I have the 5610u and see no reason to get the 5000. It costs more and is essentially the same watch - plus the 5610 is my go to watch at home. I have many high end watches but the 5610 and also the DW5600 are my favorites. The cheap 5600e has a great display.
I have 5 Gshock : DW5600E, GWM5610U, GWM5610BCR, GW5000U and finally DW5040PG and I’d say way better than the Apple Watch. Also I have a Casio Duro MDV106 that I like a lot.
Sorry but I think 5610 beats the 5000 Most bang for the buck on a watch period. Part of getting Casios is not being a sucker and overpaying. It's a peoples watch. 30%lighter and 0.5mm thinner. The 5610 is just lighter and more comfortable. As for design I'm a sucker dot the red cicle in the dial!! I love it. It brings contrast and punch.
I have Bluetooth negative vision of the watch If you do not contact to you phone I love the way it automatically connects to the time signal also the fact I can record the position of any were I have been on the planet the best bit is got it on clearance for £57
I always find it strange when people say they don’t like the new LED light and they prefer the more ‘classic’ green one. To me, the one sided LED is even more classic!!! Similar to the lights on the DW5600C and other 80s/ 90s models!!
The opinions about this model really differ. A bit premium feeling for the one who wearing it, but still looking like a normal budget square for other people. I simply need to try it out to really know if I find it worth the price. Interesting is that the extra weight contributes to the feeling of higher class, despite more weight in itself has necessarily nothing to do with quality. Apart from that, the light weight of G-shocks is one of the attractive features of G-shocks.
The Premium G-Shock Squares are the dw 5000c the ww 5100c dw 5200c ww 5300c, etc. The one you have takes naps, needs sun exposure to keep the battery from getting damaged and the dlc coating chips easily.
You say this is a Japanese market watch, which is technically correct, but the JF version is no different from the regular version. The GW-5000U is available everywhere internationally. That said, all the new watches with the “U” modules are very nice. The gw-m5610u has all the same features, but without the luxury build quality and at half the price. Considering the price, it’s probably the single best G-shock, no, rugged watch in general, you can buy at the moment.
This video was put out when it wasn’t available everywhere. The functionality is great, but it’s the luxury build that make this so special compared to other G-Shocks.
You should check out the GW-B5600BC-1ER, with black plastic+metal bracelet, but don't pair the watch with your phone using BT, or at least unpair the watch again (find how on the internet) or it won't use the atomic time signal anymore and drain your phone battery as well as its own.

A man who has been seduced by the 5000! Totally agree with everything said! I was seduced in 1984 by the Dw 5200c 'Hero' and every screw back square since then! The Gw 5000 keeps that feeling alive, and although a premium price, this watch is worth every penny , pure nostalgia!

Awesome watch. I just picked up the 5600 Fox Fire JDM and Solar 5600UE JDM with the updated module. Great additions to my collection.

I've got three watches. A Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 (empty battery at the moment), a Seiko 5 (have to time adjust today manually because of wintertime) and the Casio GW5610U on a combi-bracelet. The Casio is my favourite. Still not convinced if the screw down caseback plus weight is worth the effort and cost moving from GW5610 to a GW5000. Nice video, i can relate to your view and opinions on watches.
The GW5000 can truly be my only watch. The GW-5000 reigns supreme in my books. Perfect size, rarely looks out of place, super supple strap and perfect heft. Being able to wear a premium G-Shock care free is extremely liberating. As others have mentioned, sapphire crystal make it the perfect watch. I enjoy wearing it more than most of my more expensive mechanicals! I work in aviation and it get's banged around against aircraft during inspections and flight decks, been scuba diving it and wear It just about anywhere. As Dominic stated, its a completely different feel on the wrist compared to a dw5600. It truly does feel special. It's the "datejust" of G-shock's. Great video by the way! You just gained a new subscriber.

You should give the GM-B5000 a try. It's another one where you have to get it on wrist to "get it," but it's very premium over the GW-5000U. And I say that as a huge fan of the GW-5000. Give it a try.
I ctrl-F'd "funny" and "hilarious" and was dismayed that none of the top comments mention these words. So I'll mention it: this video is freaking hilarious. Yes, the 5000U is an amazing watch, but this review, in this style, with the subtle humor, is everything. The cut at 5:48 kills me.

Love your review. This is one of the best GShock. I wanted this but price kind of premium for this one. Therefore I recently add the GWB5600SL5 to my collection. Where I stay multiband does not work. So, having bluetooth to sync time is good enough for me. Plus I still have multiband 6 if I travel to a country that support it.

The issue with the Electro Luminescent light, is that it gets dimmer over time, as you use it, and eventually stops working.
Im so Happy with this stunning Watch und i normaly wear High End Dive watches Rolex Omega Breitling! But this Pieceflashed me and send me Back in my 90th Life Time and my Childhood! My first Watch was a Casio! Awesome Little Japanese Timepiece! Cheers
I have the 5610u and see no reason to get the 5000. It costs more and is essentially the same watch - plus the 5610 is my go to watch at home. I have many high end watches but the 5610 and also the DW5600 are my favorites. The cheap 5600e has a great display.
I have 5 Gshock : DW5600E, GWM5610U, GWM5610BCR, GW5000U and finally DW5040PG and I’d say way better than the Apple Watch. Also I have a Casio Duro MDV106 that I like a lot.

Most bang for the buck on a watch period. Part of getting Casios is not being a sucker and overpaying.
It's a peoples watch.
30%lighter and 0.5mm thinner. The 5610 is just lighter and more comfortable.
As for design I'm a sucker dot the red cicle in the dial!! I love it. It brings contrast and punch.

I always find it strange when people say they don’t like the new LED light and they prefer the more ‘classic’ green one. To me, the one sided LED is even more classic!!! Similar to the lights on the DW5600C and other 80s/ 90s models!!

The caseback on this model should be made in titanium. The watch is quite top heavy with its original stainless steel caseback.
I quite like the weight of it. Feels substantial. I would be curious of the feel with the lighter weight titanium.

The opinions about this model really differ. A bit premium feeling for the one who wearing it, but still looking like a normal budget square for other people.
I simply need to try it out to really know if I find it worth the price.
Interesting is that the extra weight contributes to the feeling of higher class, despite more weight in itself has necessarily nothing to do with quality.
Apart from that, the light weight of G-shocks is one of the attractive features of G-shocks.
This watch is not the watch for 99% of people. It’s a watch for the wearer and that’s why we love it.
The Premium G-Shock Squares are the dw 5000c the ww 5100c dw 5200c ww 5300c, etc. The one you have takes naps, needs sun exposure to keep the battery from getting damaged and the dlc coating chips easily.

You say this is a Japanese market watch, which is technically correct, but the JF version is no different from the regular version.
The GW-5000U is available everywhere internationally.
That said, all the new watches with the “U” modules are very nice. The gw-m5610u has all the same features, but without the luxury build quality and at half the price. Considering the price, it’s probably the single best G-shock, no, rugged watch in general, you can buy at the moment.
This video was put out when it wasn’t available everywhere.
The functionality is great, but it’s the luxury build that make this so special compared to other G-Shocks.

You should check out the GW-B5600BC-1ER, with black plastic+metal bracelet, but don't pair the watch with your phone using BT, or at least unpair the watch again (find how on the internet) or it won't use the atomic time signal anymore and drain your phone battery as well as its own.

A man who has been seduced by the 5000! Totally agree with everything said! I was seduced in 1984 by the Dw 5200c 'Hero' and every screw back square since then! The Gw 5000 keeps that feeling alive, and although a premium price, this watch is worth every penny , pure nostalgia!
