I think that the GS design language is somewhat restrained and refined with a big focus on business. I think this reflects the Japanese market where business men wear suits to work every day and would need something elegant, but not gaudy.
Something I like about GS is the integration of texture and natural themes into a watch dial. It’s feels like they’re using impressionist designs to evoke a feeling when viewed which elevates what would otherwise be a plain dress watch.

Not just the Daytona, it's pretty much everything from Rolex at this point of time. We're officially living through 'Rolex mania', much like the Dutch tulip mania from the 17th century. The prices are hyped up so much just because many people believe they should be hyped, not because the product itself has the intrinsic value to justify the price.
I'm sure business schools in the future will have case studies referring to these years as the era of the great Rolex mania.

I own a few of these and I’m glad you included the Nautilus, I was mega excited to get one 9 years ago for my 40th, I sold off some vintage Rolex pieces to buy it and I now deeply regret that, I got mine at a discount and when I went to collect it I was seriously underwhelmed, I was amazed to see the pin and collar system in the bracelet and the underside of the flip on the clasp was dull and unfinished, the watch was a disaster going back to Patek three times in the two year warranty period for time keeping and a stuck fast date change, apparently a common fault.
I also agree if you pay £29,000.00 for the Daytona it’s overpriced but at retail it’s the best watch ever and my favourite going out watch at the minute, I love wearing it and only became a fan when they made the bezel ceramic.
I don’t think the Submariner should be include for the simple reason it’s a lifetime watch, when you get one you never need another, it also matches everything you wear, thank you for yet another great video.

A 300 dollars Orient will also last about the same. It has unique features, like the XX-size gasket with the screw on ring and the domed, expanding crystal for improved water pressure resistance. On top of that the Vostok is dirt cheap. I agree to a point about the Casio, as I have also seen video after video extolling the virtues of this watch. I agree with the point that many of us that watch these videos are more interested in mechanical and automatic watches, where a quartz watch has to possess desirable attributes (for me, the Longines Conquest VHP, the only quartz watch on my list). That said, it's a great watch if you love it, and is a great watch if you need an inexpensive watch that can take a knock or rough wear and survive, Great for work, working in the yard, hiking, rock climbing, sky diving, and generally casual wear. Also a great first watch for kids 10 years and above.

Some of these takes feel like they're conflating overpriced on the secondary/gray market with being overrated. In those cases, you've got a chunk of that being due to people using watches as an asset class without much care about the watch itself so it's not even a case of watch enthusiasts overvaluing the things. I can understand where a lot of these opinions are coming from though even if I don't agree with them, e.g. I think that the standard Speedmaster Moonwatch and Rolex Sub are kind of boring to look at but that's also what makes them versatile pieces and both are high quality watches. I just know that if I had either they'd mostly be relegated to "well I can't figure out what color watch to pair with this outfit so I'll just grab a black watch" duty.
That said, I think the Vostok take hilariously missed the point. I'm pretty sure Vostok fans agree that they're janky watches and think that's part of the appeal. They're akin to the people in the US that add a Yugo, Trabant, or other communist era crapcan car to their garage for fun.

    • @rchristie1975
      @rchristie1975 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely spot on. I would say, and I know we’re dipping into semantics here, that the inflated prices we are currently experiencing on some pieces equate to their being overrated. Do they become overrated because many folks equate price with quality, or is it the other way around? I certainly don’t know, but I’d wager there is quite a bit of “it’s the most expensive, so it must be the best” kind of thing going on.

You get a high-beat, in-house movement that is finished as well as a Patek, you get a melodious mechanical alarm, internally rotating dive bezel, compressor crowns, great water resistance, legible and unique dial, gorgeous case with RG 1000 hour movement medallion on the caseback and that bracelet is one of the nicest finished and most comfortable you'll ever wear (bracelets are rare, as most people wear the MCM on a strap, which is super nice too). In short, it's the one watch, watch collection. Dressy, sporty, bracelet, strap... it does it all. Oh, and short production run makes them somewhat hard to find.

If one loves watches, its just a matter of buying what you like and what you can afford.
Its not only the "brand" appeal, but also the "look" appeal as well as the mechanical sense of what it is ,what they are and how it feels , was made and works..From the trilogy of Ulysse Nardin, to a Seiko SKX 007, dammmm, arent the cool, exotic and yes, a watch piece you enjoy so much to have, see and just use.
Going back to Seiko SKX, its customizing capabilities is amazing!!
I compare it to the custom Jeep market in cars!!!...you can make it as personal and as rare and unique as you want , with the soud quality of Seiko, which is absolute quality , dollar per dollar spent.

I have an old beat up Vostok I bought used in a second hand store in China around 26 years ago for $10 that barely loses a minute a week. It is on a NATO strap that is make in Sweden. :D

    Hello,
A question for a new watch collector,
Would you pick the Omega Seamaster or Speedmaster ?

It depends. If you are going scuba diving, get the seamaster. However, if you are going to the moon, you are gonna need the speedmaster.
