Oh how i miss the heavy rain races where the true masters shine. I also quite clearly remember that race and how furious i was with Coulthard. I was just 11 years old at that time, but at that exact moment i understood quite clearly the meaning of the word "furious". I was such a big Schumacher fan that i was crossing my fingers during every single race. Somehow in my frustration with the car crash i broke my thumb. Can't forget that race even if i wanted to. But really - rain an formula 1 go together like beer and stake.
I saw Schumi and Coulthard crash before my eyes, jumped over the fence after the race to grab some pieces of their cars. Had a bunch of nice parts, but was so stupid to trow them in the bin a few years later 😭😭😭
When I clicked on this video, I knew it was Spa 1998... I still remember watching it live, it was incredible that so many cars were involved in this crash. Brought back memories, mostly seeing Coulthard's car with no front tires fly left to right on the screen. Unmistakable.
Imola '94 was the worst...it cost the lives of two drivers, one of which ranks amongst the very best of all time, spectators & marshalls were injured, the race went on even though there was a death at the even, they were not supposed to have that race after Rolands death
If I remember correctly they got around that by taking him to a hospital outside of imola, so that he was pronounced dead there rather than at the track which would have forced the governments hand to cancel the race
If time travel is a reality, it would be interesting to see any F1 race in a calendar year if Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel, Juan Manuel Fangio, Fernando Alonso, Jackie Stewart, Max Verstappen, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Nikki Lauda, Mika Hakkinen, Nelson Piquet & Jack Brabham all race together in their prime ages... I'm sure the seats at all venues would be overbooked even if ticket prices are 10 times more expensive than currently 🏆 🤗
Michael did not look like someone who wanted to overtake, rather someone who expected the driver in front to be faster. Telemetry showed that DC was at 50% (don't trust my memory for the exact number ;) ) while Michael was at 100% coming out of the corner. Was that deliberate from DC? Maybe not, but it certainly was intentionally frustrating MS. As mentioned below, DC did eventually, years later, acknowledge that what he did was wrong.

The one and only Murray Walker…..the GOAT of race commentary. Having gotten that out of the way, in my opinion this race was one of the most entertaining and history changing races ever.
But you said that Jos Verstappen had mechanical drama (blown engine) on lap 8 and subsequently retired, but then at the end of the video you say that only one vehicle bowed out due to mechanical failure, which was the Mernadi Ford. So which is it?
Probably because Jos Verstappen car got also some damage (you can see him hitting some parts on track) during the first lap and he started at restart in the spare car.
Saw this race live, one of the most dramatic ever. Coulthard either did it on purpose or was extremely careless to taxi on the race line in those conditions. Today he would have been penalised for impeding another driver, but those were different times. It cost Schumacher the title, and showed how on edge things were at Ferrari during those bitter years. Looking back, it is almost miraculous how Schumacher's temperament eventually worked out with Ferrari. As for Coulthard, kept doing these small errors or mistakes, impeding him from reaching the heights where his raw speed could otherwise had led.
I am 42, I was 17 at that time but come on dude. "Coulthard doesn't let Schumacher, this is shameful!" CCouldthard slows down to let him pass "Coulthard slowed down to make him crash!" Fanboys are boring.
Just see how much less spray these cars put up compared to the current cars. The wet tires can't even be used today because the visibility is already near zero while the inters are still the best. The tires aren't the problem currently (other than the wets being complete shite degradation wise), the amount of spray that the huge current cars put up is the problem. We need to go back to the smaller cars, even if they are a bit slower. These cars will also be cheaper allowing for more teams to compete and max out the budget cap.
They were still at a pretty slow speed (for f1 standard) as they just came out from Source, had this happened at Eu Ruge there would be hell a different history.
@@brunoboldt6336- correct - the speed at which the accident started was no more than 100-110mph, and the impacts didn’t generate too much G-force, since they were colliding with other cars as opposed to a wall or tyre barrier.
And Spa almost got deleted of the calendar this year. It's because South Africa was unable to complete it's race track that we still have a race in Belgium. Next year is probably the last time they will race there. It's also a drivers favorite. The race this year was incredible with overtakes in almost every lap and that in comparison with those street tracks where the standing at lap 10 is also the final standing at the end of the race.
The issue nowadays is there’s too much control. The cars don’t break down, tyres force managed pace, they don’t race in the rain and DRS makes overtaking too easy. There’s not enough jeopardy so the races are almost scripted, doesn’t feel like true racing. You don’t want undue risk but there has to be some risk. I miss wet races.
I remember seeing footage at the time of Coultard on the formation lap with something flying off his car, probably the bit of suspension that failed at La Source - the real cause of Coultard veering violently to the right! Stop the video at 2:58 and you'll se his left front is almost off. Go Back and stop it at 2:46 and you'll see Coultard on the outside of the track with Irvine behind at to the right of him. Now you could argue that Irvine hit him, forcing him into the barrier and that would be why Coultard's left front suspension had failed. If that was the case then the momentum of his rear end would have sent him into a spin and he would have hit the right-hand barrier arse-first. Now stop the video at 3:06 and you'll see Irvine just coming into frame (with his rear wing cartwheeling down the grass and his front wing yet to come off after coliding with Schumi's brother or was it Graham Hill's son?), had Irvine colided with Coultard then he would have been in front or at least alongside Coultard in order for him to send Coultard's front left into the barrier and he would have appeared in frame a lot sooner than he did, considering that was 8 seconds after Coultard veered to the right and 3 seconds after Coultard in his 1 wheeled bobsled appeared from the mist that is highly unlikely. How's this for a scenario: Irvine was to the rear and right of Coultard, Coultard's suspension fails, veering him violently across the track and into the right-hand barrier. As this happens Irvine brakes to avoid a collision and is rear-ended, causing his rear wing to come off.
I watched this live remember it like yesterday I even remember thinking something was going to happen and staying in to watch it and I wasn't even big into F1.
You simply forgot something to tell. I remember that race very well! Coulthart had a lot of problems with his car and he went into the box and parked. Everybody thought he was out. But then a lot of laps later he appeared in the race again. With 10 laps after all the others. He managed that Schumacher came after him and then he drove a kind of fast, but Schumacher could catch up to him. And then suddenly Coulthart breaked way to early and hard, just in the same second, as Michael intended to overtake. In the spray Michael could not see this and crashed. Imho this crash was clearly intended by David and the team. They sent him out (with 10 laps back) on the track only for that reason, to stop Schumacher, because otherwise Michael would have won the championship. There was no other reason to take a far overlapped car back into the race. That never happened before and never after that incident!
@@TheCucumbearin 1998 only the first 6 scored points. The only reason, along with the always increasing point scoring possibilities per season, current drivers are able to break record after record.
@@Dirt-Diggler Yes, and that means he was to be blamed. I mean it's bloody obvious. You have a heavy rain race and you slam the breaks with a driver approaching you from behind, with heavy spray of you back. Of- fucking - course David was to be blamed and Schumacher fuming, asking if he wanted to kill him was totally right. It was basically a break check in heavy rain conditions. The audacity of David calling out Schumacher for anger issues, while in reality knowing and later admitting he was wrong, is unbearable. Back in the days people can get easily killed in F1 crashes or get critically harmed. I would also be angry if you not only ruined the race and took away a safe win, but also endangered my life...

Two opinions: Coulthard knew exactly what he‘s doing, it was a disgusting cheapshot. Beside this crash you see both together at many F1 events smoking a cigar together, a proof of two great sportsmen. At least the discussion about heavy rain races is quite older. The F1 should never quit them because it depends to the sport.
In my opinion one of the greatest races of all time is Spa 1995. Schumi drove from p16 in full rain on dry tires to the victory. As a Schumi fan it was a dream.
IMO the decision to not allow Ralf to race Damon for the win backfired on Eddie Jordan in the long run. Sure, he had Frentzen being an unlikely title challenger in '99 and finished 3rd in the constructors' standings (behind Ferrari and McLaren), but after that the team slipped down the pecking order before undergoing an ownership and name change almost every year in the mid 2000's (Jordan became Midland F1, then Spyker and then Force India, which stuck around for about 10 years and after that from the team's ashes Racing Point was born and it evolved into it's final form as of 2023 - Aston Martin Racing). Meanwhile although Ralf had to endure the 1999 season in the midfield with an inferior car and underpowered engine (which was basically 1997-spec Renault engine) for the year 2000 BMW would come with works support and Williams with Ralf and Juan-Pablo Montoya (who made his debut in 2001) became the closest rivals to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's dominance in the early 2000's

wouldn;t hve had to cancel the race. Some eleven cars weren;t involved in the incident
and some had minor/no damage
Was going to write this too. Coulthard lost it all by himself. Caused the biggest crash in F1 history. Sadly this channel blames Irvine lol.
Fisichella was extremely lucky when he rear ended Nakano's Minardi too. The wheels weren't tethered and one comes very close to hitting him on the head
@@cribbe6547 very true. It was that accident that led to Schumacher realising that Coulthard didn't, "Try and f***ing kill me", like he accused him of doing. The accidents wouldn't have happened today, because they don't race in conditions like that anymore. The visibility was that poor the drivers couldn't see their own steering wheel in normal conditions, nevermind when they came up behind another car.
One of the luckiest people that day was the guy in the stands who had a wheel fly right past him when the crash at the start happened. If it had hit him it'd have taken his head off. I'm not sure if they had the wheel teethers back then if they would have kept the wheel on, because of the sheer amount of carnage. They still lose the wheels today in major crashes
I watched this live. One of the most spectacular races in history!
This race absolutely did not change F1 forever. Arguably it swung the momentum back towards Hakkinen in that season, that’s it though. For a race that changed F1 forever, maybe try San Marino 1994…
And Grand Prix Legends was released that year. Amazing times.
Michael was so unlucky. He easily would have gotten 9 wdc’s. 1997-1999 he could have definetly won a title and 2006 he also had a chance.
Unlucky? He have the best car of the grid for 5 years on Ferrari and his teammate forbidden to overtake Michael many times. Evan on Benneton his first championship was thrwing his car against Damon Hill's cars and FIA dont punished him. Michael would not have more than 3 championships in normal conditions.
😂
i like the pro and contras in this conversation
Definitely 1999 and 2006.
So true
No one stopped his team mates from beating him to pole position in quali's. If they proved to be faster ferrari needn't have to give preference to michael
More like beer and tequila.
It's either lots of fun or lots of barf.
steak
I saw Schumi and Coulthard crash before my eyes, jumped over the fence after the race to grab some pieces of their cars.
Had a bunch of nice parts, but was so stupid to trow them in the bin a few years later 😭😭😭
Really? Is that legal?
Watched it live on TV as a teenager. Epic stuff.
Its 1000 times better to call off a race than to have people risk their very real lives for our entertainment
This is bussiness, not sport, and money just needs to flow through it.
When I clicked on this video, I knew it was Spa 1998... I still remember watching it live, it was incredible that so many cars were involved in this crash. Brought back memories, mostly seeing Coulthard's car with no front tires fly left to right on the screen. Unmistakable.
spa never fails to impress in the rain
This race didnt change the F1 in the slightest. All went on as normal.
True that
Imola '94 was the worst...it cost the lives of two drivers, one of which ranks amongst the very best of all time, spectators & marshalls were injured, the race went on even though there was a death at the even, they were not supposed to have that race after Rolands death
If I remember correctly they got around that by taking him to a hospital outside of imola, so that he was pronounced dead there rather than at the track which would have forced the governments hand to cancel the race
I remember watching this race live. I was in Scotland at the time. 25 years ago. Man I'm old.
I remember this race as it happened yesterday
Good god! You unlocked an almost lost memory..... That was an extremely long AF race too..... I thought it was never going to end🤣
My favorite grand prix of all time , biggest ever pile up , crashes , drama , rain , Michael shumacher storming into the Mclaren garage threatning to knock David coulthards block off, and a jordan 1-2 finish, what more could you ask.😮😅😂😊❤
I remember waking up hung over (Canada here) and watching this live! My buddy was still sleeping and missed it!
11:56 it wasnt Ralf who said that, but Michael, and then Eddie told him: ok, pay his exit and the contract is done, and Michael did it.
Great Video I was watching this epic race on TV. Spa always giving. I Sub
Please please never use bitmojis ever EVER again
😂😂😂🤔🤔🤔🤗🤗🤗
I can’t believe this was 1998, this was the era I really got into F1 and remember it like it’s a couple of years ago
JV nearly obliterated his Williams due to, IIRC, a bet he could ake Eau Rouge flat out.
Then he did the same thing a year later, just...more spectacularly. Spa always serves up something interesting reallyis chaod
sounds incredibly dangerous and silly
It was when he drove for BAR. He and Zonta bet each other that they couldn't take Eau Rouge flat out... both crashed spectacularly.
Jacques was always a bit of a maverick!
Okay I'll gladly sub for that verstappen joke, this is the first video of yours I saw almost completely random and I already love your channel man lol.
Really happy that you like the videos mate ❤️💪🏼
This is some high level quality content. Earned yourself a subscriber!
Really appreciate it mate ❤️ better videos will keep on coming 💪🏼
not true
The one and only Murray Walker…..the GOAT of race commentary. Having gotten that out of the way, in my opinion this race was one of the most entertaining and history changing races ever.
But you said that Jos Verstappen had mechanical drama (blown engine) on lap 8 and subsequently retired, but then at the end of the video you say that only one vehicle bowed out due to mechanical failure, which was the Mernadi Ford. So which is it?
Probably because Jos Verstappen car got also some damage (you can see him hitting some parts on track) during the first lap and he started at restart in the spare car.
I remember watching this live. And still I remember the guy who was bending over the barriers as a tyre flew right past his nose. Man, that was crazy
How did it cost Schumacher the title?
@@jonathancarre6932 It is explained in the video, towards the end.
I am 42, I was 17 at that time but come on dude.
"Coulthard doesn't let Schumacher, this is shameful!"
CCouldthard slows down to let him pass
"Coulthard slowed down to make him crash!"
Fanboys are boring.
Watching this live when it happened was an F1 moment in time. Murray Walker RIP, Michael Schumacher G.O.A.T
0:03 Your spelling is quite appalling.
I don't know how no one was killed at the start it was a great race
They were still at a pretty slow speed (for f1 standard) as they just came out from Source, had this happened at Eu Ruge there would be hell a different history.
@@brunoboldt6336- correct - the speed at which the accident started was no more than 100-110mph, and the impacts didn’t generate too much G-force, since they were colliding with other cars as opposed to a wall or tyre barrier.
i like what u doing on this channel... daily fuel fuels us all...
I must have missed this point - but exactly how did this race "change Formula 1 forever"?
I think he meant it changed F1 forever...until the next change in F1🤣🤣🤣
Props for pronouncing Villeneuve correctly! Lots of people don't get it right at all. Good video.
Actually Coulthard admitted years later he took his foot off the gas on the racing line in the wet, that caused the Shumi crash… it was deliberate
Karma kind of has a way of fixing things. Every bite you take that isn't yours eventually comes back at you...Michael Schumacher.
As this happens Irvine brakes to avoid a collision and is rear-ended, causing his rear wing to come off.
nope, he lost control after running over a drain cover.
It could also be that he had a guaranteed point since there were less than 10 cars
@@TheCucumbearin 1998 only the first 6 scored points. The only reason, along with the always increasing point scoring possibilities per season, current drivers are able to break record after record.
@@Nickname1234wat theee helll, these changes should have their own category
And another conspitard.
No te crash wasn't clearly intended.
R.I.P Murray.
That was Coulthards fault. Coulthard even apologized to Schumacher years later saying he droves to slow.
No he said he he made a bad decision, he had been asked to let MS through but did it in a bad place IE on the racing line
He admitted causing the original pile up, nothing to do with Irvine. This guy knows nothing.
What a half-wit comment 🤣
@@GB-vn1tf He even stated it Google it urself u expert.
I remember watching this on TV with my old man hell of a race day that was
Your videos could very much do without the gay looking bitmoji cut scenes.
Watching old F1 clips pre-halo make me nervous!
I was 8 years old and I remember this race more than any other in my life. My dad, my uncle, we all knew meanwhile the race it would be one of the most legendary races of all time.
Wow!!! Light years ago... F1 is so different . Memories&❤!!
Best GP id ever seen. This race is why i love car race
In my opinion one of the greatest races of all time is Spa 1995. Schumi drove from p16 in full rain on dry tires to the victory. As a Schumi fan it was a dream.
Remember it as a great race. Well done Jordon!!
Meanwhile although Ralf had to endure the 1999 season in the midfield with an inferior car and underpowered engine (which was basically 1997-spec Renault engine) for the year 2000 BMW would come with works support and Williams with Ralf and Juan-Pablo Montoya (who made his debut in 2001) became the closest rivals to Michael Schumacher and Ferrari's dominance in the early 2000's
i dont think you getting enough love for your top notch videos you been making.... applause to you, a whole grandstand full and some.
Probably because he cant pronounce coulthard
My favorite track. Its changed so much.
“Oh, carnage everywhere!” That call by Derek Daly in the Speedvision broadcast was far better. Eat your heart out, Murray Walker!
F1 was more fun in the 90s and 00s. Especially now with LibertyMedia owning it, it‘s gone down the drain.
Rain always makes for interesting racing
Im Belgian and i can say the weather is impresivible

I remember that so well! Unbelievable.
Imagine if netflix made drive to survive then.
Gave up watching F1 decades ago after it became super-boring, but remember this race well.
It's like the NBA now, boring af.....
I've only attended one GP in my life, and it was this one, I was there.🙂
You can tell how annoyed Ralf was to get that "order". Like, f*ck. I wouldn't have liked it either.
this was defo one of the best races I ever watched as a kid, absolute madness, epic entertainment by F1 standards, Hill was my fav driver and to see him get that first win in a sub par car in that kind of chaotic race was amazing.
