A.Lange & Sohne watches are in a league of there own, having just spent 2 hours in their new boutique in Dubai I was just blown away by the quality and just the sheer workmanship that goes into these pieces by the artisans that produce them. Just incredible watches!

What a great video. I have the second generation 1815 Up/Down in rose gold, and the reason I got it over the 1815, is those subdials. It’s still obviously a dress watch, but the two sub dials just break it up enough to keep it interesting, so it goes great with more casual dress. It’s not a ‘tuxedo’ dress watch, which makes it more versatile
I was lucky enough to collect the newest Submariner from the dealer last weekend. While I was there I tried on the ALS 1815 up/down, which has been on my wish list for a while. And I thought it was amazing, perfect size, good presence yet restrained. I was reaffirmed that I'll get it one day soon. Them I made a mistake...: when the sales girl asked me if I wanted to try on another one, I asked for the 1815 Chronograph... and I was blown away... the movement in reality looks simply breathtaking... pics or video condo it justice... so much detail so much depth... now the 1815 up/down is spoiled for me... is would only ever be a surrogate for the Chronograph...
Great video, which articulates exactly why I went for the 1815 Auf/Ab (in white gold). Also, the discrete splash of red on the power reserve indicator adds a bit of jazz to an otherwise extremely classic watch.
IDGUY, while I enjoy the vast majority of your videos, it is this design oriented examination of a watch/brand where you go into design details that I learn the most from you. I love the fact that you took an email about a specific watch and the issue about the numerals and turned it into a 13 minute video. Great job. Thank you for showing the 1983 Waltham watch on the weekend. I was driving back from the mountains at 120 kms/hr in a bit of a snow squall so I could not engage as much as I wanted to. LOL
Omg. I loved this video. You gave me a far more eloquent articulation of my feelings about Lange in general and the 1815 range in particular. I was lucky enough to be able to buy my first Lange recently and I opted for the WG 1815 Up Down. I literally love it. I feel very fortunate to own one. And I’ve just ordered the 1815 Thin that you featured. A totally timeless classic in my eyes. It kinda made my bank account squeal for a simple Lange. But I can’t wait to have it in the collection next year. Thanks again for this thoughtful review.
Another excellent video IDGuy. I absolutely love Lange and the 1815 Up Down is my favorite. Hopefully one dayI can add one to my collection. Thank you so much for doing an in-depth look at this often overlooked model line.
We'll get you into the seat of an 1815 one of these days, Bluesy ;) I'm also infatuated by the 1815 line in general... They're gorgeous (and considering what they are, aren't stupidly expensive) I hope you've had an excellent week so far, brother
The 1815 Rattrapante layout actually reminded me of an IWC Portugieser Chronograph at first. The 1815 Up/Down is my favorite in the whole line, especially since I've been fascinated by marine chronometer layouts. Finally, I also like the 1815 Thin because, though not as minimalist or as small as the Saxonia Thin, I prefer the presence of minute markers. Plus, honey gold is a perfect balance to the almost sterile feel of white gold, and the very soft feel of Lange's pink gold mixture.
What I love about the 1815 up down is that it is understated. And yet noticeable. If that makes any sense. I can easily wear it both casually on a weekend and dressy for formal events.
And it has a practicality to its complications which is also special. There's a lot to the watch that makes it very unique in this area (and they're priced pretty well on the grey market too for what you're getting) ;)
Did you go for the rose or white gold? I'm looking at the 1815. I thinking the rose can dress down to smart casual but its always going to be louder. The white it more formal at the top end but with a dark brown strap it could dress down as well. I think white gold would be the up down as its a little sportier. The standard 1815 in rose.
Superb video. I've drifted towards the 1815 chronograph as my favourite in the Lange stable, and those new limited editions are on a whole other level. You could stare at either side of that Turbograph all day, every day...
And can you believe that a friend of this channel got hands-on time with all of them a few weeks back? He says the Turbograph is insane, but also very unwearable for his tastes (it's quite large and thick) - but they all are works or art in themselves. The 1815 Chrono will never lose its draw for me... Maybe we'll be lucky to snag one up one day? ;)
@@ID-Guy For their quality, the 1815 chronos can be found at prices that are not as eye-watering as certain other brands' pieces. The Turbograph a little out of pretty much everyone's reach, even if they do have the wrists to carry it off! (Also hear some find the Datograph is a bit too weighty for their comfort.)
Fantastic video. The 1815 Chrono is my grail watch. And I mean that in a way that it will probably take me 15 or more years to position myself to responsibly purchase it. Thank God that it doesn't cost as much as the Datograph or there would be no chance.
Really interesting and beautifully presented, thank you. I do now have a vision of the person who applies the numerals at AL&S having a little cry whenever they expand the 1815 range!
My favourite ALS. The 1815 chronograph flyback in black dial in rose gold is one of grail watches. One of the best chronograph, in my opinion in the market. The see through case back is watch porn. Hope that one day, I will be able to add one to the collection. Fingers cross.
Same with me and the white gold variant. Always been drawn back to its design for years (and that's a winning formula) Thank you for the comment Richard! Here's to wishing us both luck!
You were on fire last weekend, brother. Thank you so much for being a part of the liveshow! And absolutely... how we'd all love one in our collections ;)
You should cover the Saxonia thins. The very simple and pure models of ALS. There are still a lot of people who are purist and appreciates the minimalist designs. Look at the Copper blues/black. Going from Grand complications to the most simplistic design will give us the stark contrasts and the beauty of the brand.
On a dress watch with a slow beat movement I prefer to not have a running seconds. A jerky seconds hand is not graceful and spoils the luxury a bit, at least to me. Also no small seconds register makes it the most balanced dial. While I get balancing the small seconds with a power reserve I think they could have done exactly the same thing with a small pointer date in the same place and fixed the balance of the dial with an added complication. For dress watches, I prefer Patek. They are generally (excluding 1815 thin) thinner and more elegant. Chronos, give me Lange every time. Great video again.
1815 was high on my radar but then a 5196 came up for a great price. The truth is I liked 1815 better. I ended up selling 5196 later but did turn a profit. 1815 would still be on my short list if i was in market for conservative dress watch. Honey gold is the color to got IMO.
Such a difficult question Michael...What I'm struggling with, not a fan of the leaf hands on the Patek, but love the applied numerals, prefer Patek's more organic case, but love Lange's dial arrangement... this question could kill me hahaha!
That is hilarious Miika! Great observation! At that point I stopped looking at split numerals (assuming that they'd all be butchered) ;) It looks so weird now seeing only two intact numerals on the dial...
The 1815 is the perfect simple dress watch in my eyes, almost a counterpart to Breguet's 5157's ostentatiousness. Would love to own both but alas... - Han
Great video! Keep up the good work, videos keep getting better and better! An idea for future videos: I’d like to see something very different here, something controversial like RM, Jacob & Co or Konstantin Chaykin. I wonder what you think about them from a design standpoint...
I don't doubt their quality, but they honestly don't do anything for me- until they're turned over. Love their movements, the dials and cases really aren't my thing at all. Cheers 👍🏻
Blue doesn't go with black, that's about it. In practice most people cannot see the dial of your watch at a distance (believe me, I have 20:20 vision). So choose a strap colour based on the rest of your outfit. I like brown suede for example so I choose a tan strap if I wear shoes like that. But don't feel too restricted as your watch is just an accessory to your outfit, it isn't the main event.
Brilliant question Kyle! That could be a video itself. My favourite colour for any watch, no matter the material is black. It's so universal. But then brown always adds a nice dynamic with any material or watch face. I'll put some thoughts together on "colour theory" and explain it better! Thanks for the idea and the comment
Could you consider that if a number is covered to the point where it is not recognisable in isolation, then it best to not show it at all? If the number is just ‘clipped’ it should be show.
I like this point a lot! And yes, "Clipped" and "Sliced" should be two very different things. Isn't it interesting to see that Lange Pocket watches did away with numerals if the running seconds got in the way of them? (I tried to find a good reference to include) - I wonder where the "slicing" came from and what time period. Great point John, thank you for this!
The 1815 Chrono and Small Seconds come close to perfection. I'm actually a fan of the clipped 6. I'm not so keen on the new honey gold designs - looking increasingly Patek. And not in a good way.
@@ID-Guy I personally think the saxonia thin is probably the best dress watch ever made. Even better than any calatrava and I know that's a bold statement ;-) Hope my email found you well, however after this video its content is mostly irrelevant.
