I love the Ludwig and because of my small wrists, I bought the 33 and later purchased a horween shell-cordovan remborde strap with the winged clasp. Love that watch! I don't completely agree with the Private Seller vs Dealers. Yes, that may be true that if you're completely new to watches the second might be safer, however I found the "pro" grey market dealers very often try to make the watch look brand new by refinishing the watch and "professionally" servicing it. That many times leads to lesser quality finish than factory finish, overpolished rounded edges, dust under the crystal, marks on the hands etc. (yes, I have experience with that). If you don't care about that stuff and only want something shiny with ROLEX on the dial that's fine, but I personally would not have a watch refinished by anyone other than the manufacturer and I rather have a watch with slight scuffs from a private seller than a "cleaned up" one from one of the professional dealers. I would only get one from them if it's brand new and unworn.

Great info as always! One point that applies to me, but not necessarily everyone......When I go into an AD (Or ANY other shop), I'm going there for a specific item. IF an AD starts showing me items that I've not expressed any interest in, they'll get one warning, after that, I'm gone, out the door never to return. Same applies when I buy a new laptop, I DON'T want 'Norton' installing, and I won't be buying additional 'accidental damage' protection. I've walked out of more than one place because of this, their loss not mine.

Only thing I would add… Sometimes buying a cheap watch that’s a similar size as a goal watch you might have is a good way to find out if you like the size. I bought a Lunar Pilot as a beater/place holder for better watches down the road and wearing it has really informed me on what I like and don’t like about a watch. Since I spent less than $300 for a second hand version. I feel really good about the buy and look forward to wearing it even after I’ve bought my big boy watches.

    Good points.
I'n my oppinion private offers are totally overrated.
I feel like 95% of the watsches are trash or unworth related to their (wet dream) prices of the ownet.
I get their thoughts: "I buy an expensive watch, but hey...after wearing and flexing I will sell for allmost same price."
There so many rocked down watches, full of scratches and flaws but thf prices are only 10% or never more than 20% less than originals. Comon...before buying and risiking a damaged movement, I pay the full price.
The average 20% off which is mentioned is only if the watch is as good as new condition.
    But the most didn't understood.
That's why many ads are staying for months till they are deleted without selling.

Hi Jenni, great Vlog as always, with good advice for beginners as well as some reminders to the more seasoned collectors amongst us. Another point to consider is FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). With increased awareness of watches in the wider community both as status symbols and potential investments (your point #6) some people are sighing into watch buying for fear they are losing out on “easy money”. A friend of mine has fallen into some of the traps you correctly identify, and FOMO was one of my friend’s drivers for getting into watches. Look forward to your next vlog 🙏

The reason is that most of my collection is a result of settling for what's instantly available versus what I really want. 100% about being cautious early on about buying from private sellers; better to spend a bit more and risk less until you know what you're looking at / buying. So, regarding selling your watch/waiting for a price: This entirely depends on what you value your opportunity cost of time -- selling for less but spending less time may be a net win.🤷‍♀ Unrelated: Your nose freckles are the cuuuutest!!!!

Hello. I had a question. This is a situation I find myself in. What about if you see a watch on a watch-selling website. You and the seller then agree to meet with the intention of buying providing everything checks out with the watch, instead of purchasing through the website? The owner is going to have to pay a fee for selling on the site. Makes the watch more expensive for me. If he doesn’t sell through the watch-selling website he can lower the price. I’m happy to have a reduction in price. But selling privately you loose any protection. What would you do? Buy the watch privately? I have asked to purchase the watch at a particular price. To do so he could sell outside of the website and accommodate me. For him it’s not issue. Just not sure what’s right.

One thing I would also mention. Today we have like 18 year olds that never wore a watch. Before buying an “expensive” piece it is may a good advice to get used to wearing a watch at all. This can be done with a cheap and simple watch (I onced lended one of my Swatch to a co-worker). She found it very annoying the first days but then got used to it. Now she wear a nice Tag-Heuer every day.

Great advice. What do you think of ebay's authenticity guarantee scheme? I hear that you have to send the watch to a valuer who will check the watch and send it direct to the buyer if they win the auction.

My first watch was a little wind-up Timex. I don’t care much about buying expensive timepieces because that little Timex worked for years and years. I didn’t feel any better when I bought my first 1800 dollar watch, so I sold it and went back to old vintage watches under 500 dollars.

Personally I don't do any transaction unless it's in person with both parties having verified themselves to each other in a secure location. If it doesn't feel right then pull out. I sold my pre-owned Tudor via a Chrono24 buyer who came to my place of work. He brought full ID, inspected the watch and made payment. The guy knows where I work so he knew the watch was quality. I turned down many buyers who wanted me to post it. Some willing to pay more.

Service should be a big consideration too - some watches cost $1000 +/- for time to time reconditioning, where is the nearest authorized service, etc.

When I plan on buying a watch I research it first on price and true value meaning what it sells for and what the gray market is asking. I then look around to reputable AD's and see what they have. I sleep on it the following night before I buy it. I always say to myself " Just because its a good deal doesn't mean its a good deal for me at the time of purchase." Always take your time because you have to live with the decision after your new purchase. You dont have to compete with everyone else but just be happy with your purchase and plan on keeping it for a really long time and don't flip it... you will lose a large portion of what you initially paid for it.

Kind of a silly question I'm sure, but I was wondering when you are looking at a watch what makes you know that it is a watch for you? What kind of emotions are you feeling and how do you understand that it is a good watch for you.

Great Advice, don't spend money you don't have and #6. So many folks on a watch forum I frequent worry so much about the watch holding value and look that's great if it does or if it appreciates. However do not make that the reason you're buying the piece in the first place over another piece you like that may not hold value as well. If you're doing that you're in this hobby for all the wrong reasons.

Buying from an AD, paying retail instead of overpaying on secondary market will help pace you and prevent many of these mistakes. Just became interested in Rolex but am willing to be patient and work with AD. Got my first Rolex within 6 months, next one may take a year or more but am willing to pace my self and save money by not over paying gray market prices. I've looked at Breitling and Omega but am willing to wait a bit before settling. We each have to deal with our desires.
