Using a paddle float to practise a Greenland sea kayak roll

  • Tips on how to learn to roll a sea kayak on your own using a paddle float and using a Greenland approach (but with a Euro-blade) as opposed to a hip-snappy, strong-arm, Eric Jackson white-water approach.
For a complete guide to how to nail the Greenland-style sea kayak roll, give Cheri and Turner £20.00 (they deserve it) and download "This is the Roll" (worth every cent) www.cackletv.co...
    Tips not mentioned:
    1. You need to be in a kayak with a low back and a low backrest/backband on the seat.
    2. Add foam padding to the sides of the cockpit and the thigh braces if there is insufficient contact to stop yourself falling out of the kayak when you capsize.
    3. Do exercises to build up the abs, lateral abs (external oblique) and spinal muscles. Do lots and lots of twisting exercises to loosen up the lower back.
    4. When pushing up with your lower leg, disengage the other leg otherwise you pull the kayak back on top of you again.
What doesn't appear in videos of sea kayak rolls is what the legs are doing. Yet the legs are perhaps the most important. The arms and the paddle merely create a pivot. The lower leg is what actually turns the kayak round so you can then slide onto the up-turned back deck.
The key to a successful kayak roll is synchronising the leg movement with the movement of the paddle and the arching of the back and neck, all the time keeping the shoulders parallel to the surface of the water, moving the kayak round first and lifting the head out of the water last.

Pretty significant to notice how relaxed you are under water... calmly checking your paddle angle before initiating the roll... even taking a few seconds to adjust your hood. Well done!!

Getting used to being under the water is probably the first thing you should get used to . This is a great and simple video to explain the roll

Diving, or swimming background… Constant bubbles out of the nose… It was a great demonstration of the right things to do! 😊

Thank you for the clear underwater view (and relaxed approach). I l teach quite a few canoe skills beginning from the end, so this is intuitive to me and gives me confidence I’m going to get a functional roll. With renewed resolve I’m heading to the beach tomorrow to give this a try.

I had some excellent training in the pool over winter but for me it was a bit rushed and I never managed to roll my kayak that way. This summer the weather has been excellent so I dug out my paddle float and decided to go down to a little sheltered bay to see if I could teach myself. Before I went I watched a few videos on rolling just to get the techniques into my head. This is the video that i think helped me most. It is the calm way that he does it. I watch it just before I head to the sea to remind myself that there is no need to rush or panic and that I can enjoy the sensation of being upturned under the water. Every day I have got nearer to a proper roll. With the float on the paddle it is too easy to rely upon it and sometimes I know that I was just pushing myselfup with it but slowly my technique has improved and I can tell when it is the knee and hip snap that is creating the roll and I'm doing that more often. Yesterday I was pretty much there. I let nearly all of the air from the float and still managed to roll if a little untidily. Once I get it completely nailed I am going to practice like crazy. I think its a very good technique to build confidence in your paddling. Thank you very much for the video

Ive learnt another valuable skill... i can see how you are realising air slowly thru your nostrils to get the water out! i took a note of it as im using nose plugs for rolling but in real situations nose plugs will not be used

Very helpful, thank you. Also - some really pleasant music accompanying it, much better than the crash-bang stuff we often get. 🙂

Definitely going to give this a try in our pool sessions, the best left handed video I've seen (yes will eventually need to be able to do it both directions)

I am trying to roll but I believe it needs a lot of practice, Do you live in Greece?
    Best regards.

Very nice video. Slow and clear how to do it. I teach rolling myself and this is one of the better movies how to practice rolling. Good job!

Am currently in Volos. Yes, it takes practice. Took me about 8 months working alone. Would have been quicker with help, but none was around. What made all the difference was buying the video "This is the Roll" www.cackletv.com/sea-kayaking-dvds/this-is-the-roll/ That gives a huge amount of detail about the Greenland approach, which really gets you to focus on good technique. It requires a high level of strength and flexibility in the core (back, waist and abs, front and sides). The temptation in the beginning is to think the key must be in the arms, but it isn't. It is in the core and the back. Good luck.

Like the blurb says: It's a Greenlandish approach, but with a Euro paddle, meaning the aim is to get the body into the right position so that as little muscle as possible is used. Basically, an attempt to follow Cheri and Turner when there is no Cheri or Turner there to help. Their DVD is highly recommended.
