As an outside observer that's been watching since you started trying to roll, I see progress. And so much of it has been on your own. It's nice that you're recording the journey for other beginners to see. Great job there Chad.
Thanks Bill! I actually have a couple more videos that I haven't published of me rolling.. but I couldn't make a full video as I got really frustrated very quickly in the session and just stopped recording and went for a trip instead 😂😂 There are some good days and bad days hehe
You are getting so good at this. The thing I kept forgetting was after the roll not bracing with the paddle. My instructor would yell for me to come up and then instantly do a forward sweep(hard to explain) to prevent going back over. Very impressive.
Strongly suggest not to increase height of your seat (or your butt), as this increases the centre-of-gravity (CG). In calm waters when you practice rolling, it is ok. But the real situation when you need to roll is when water conditions are bad. In such bad conditions, a higher CG will make the kayak less stable. Instead of putting the foam on your seat, put the foam on the thigh braces, so that knee contact is better. You can lift your butt if needed, provided that knee engagement is solid. In this way, you have more body kayak connection without sacrificing stability.
Some very good points on the centre of gravity.. I did feel the difference while higher. I only wanted to raise the seat for rolling but I believe I will need another solution. Adding foam in places of the Pakayak isn't too easy as they stack on each other for packing and also the cockpit size is huge.. maybe invest in another kayak just for rolling? 😂😂
@@Fishaholicboy the more fitting the kayak is, the better it is for rolling. Thus means that you really have to try it out, adjust, and so on before purchase. This is challenging because most if not all kayak manufacturers are outside the country
@@MiguelMartinez-pn2wu I really like the Akiak.. it was my introduction to the Greenland Paddle. I did get the Kalleq and the Ipik afterwards and I am using these two more these days. I really like the Ipik due to the weight and the soft shoulder looms but it's all personal preference!
I definitely had less water coming in the cockpit.. it fitted the combing much tighter and the neoprene lets less water to seep in. It's called Extreme Tour from seals. Price wise, it was around USD150 so it's just a little more than the Pakayak's version. But it will definitely be hotter as there is no ventilation and it is also harder to put on. I will use this purely for rolling practice :)
You’re really doing great! There was one day I was trying to practice rolling but they were too many people around and a lot of boats creating wakes so I didn’t feel comfortable because the water was really sloshing around and not calm. I think that will make a big difference in my practicing. I just have to find the right location
Thanks Lisa! I know what you mean about finding a quiet spot to practice. I explored quite a few places to find a place deep enough and with easy access to shore.. and especially a place where I could set up my camera. This place has quite a bit of wake boarding boats but it's manageable, especially when I go at 6am. I would love to see your rolling practice videos!
Future video suggestion, if/when you have the time or interest: Adding a sail to Pakayak. Saw it on another TH-cam once dealing with the sea of Cortez.. Looked awesome, just dont know how practical and how difficult to install on Pakayak ?
I've seen those videos too.. but I'm not really interested in kayaking with sails. I believe you'll have to drill some holes too but not entirely sure.
Hi and thanks, Fishaholicboy for sharing. I definitely can see you getting comfortable being yourself and instructing. When we learn something new physically, our body can't function as our brain does, especially since we have our own habits, too. May I clarify how your feet position when you roll? Are they on the footrests all the time to support your roll? Your modification and a new skirt purchase are very helpful information as some obstacles had to be solved. Well done and keep coming. 🙋♀🛶
My feet in this video is actually on the bulkhead as I moved the seat backstrap forward.. I was testing out different positions to see what worked better. The other times, I had my feet on the foot rests. I'm still not entirely sure which one works better for me :)
You are getting better well done. I find seat height tricky, low seat & low centre of gravity is best for touring A higher seat makes the layback easier but high centre of gravity can result in going right over after I come up.
You are doing well. But now you definitely need good sea kayak. (5 -5.4m long and not more than 56 cm wide) You will not need to rise your seat and compromise your stability. You should be able to lay back and also to be close to the water. Try as many kayaks as you can before you buy. You have to solve the storage problem. Keep up a good work.
Hey I just back on earth, you did a great improvement! Good to adjust the back deck, but the back deck is still not low enough for you to just start from the balance brace and recovery to the back deck, it is very normal in a medium/high back deck kayak, you do need some momentum or pressing hand to help recovery. I am pretty sure that you can do a balance brace in a low back deck kayak now, just how long you can stay and recovery. The next step you can try is to side sculling for support, try to consolidate the endurance of your hip and leg muscle.
@@Fishaholicboy Yes it should be the hottest week over the year, luckily the sea was claim overall. Although we had some accident, but no one get serious injury and finish the whole trip, I will upload some picture on our Qajaq group, stay tuned~!
Nice Chad, you are very persistent and making progress. A couple of weeks ago I was teaching a gentleman how to roll. The normal roll did't work as he did the same mistake as you, lifting the top hand. Then we tried the butterfly, he nailed it first time! I try that sometimes when it looks like a "student" gets stuck in the wrong position or getting confused with how to hold the paddle. For you I think it's the leg drive you have to work on. How god a brace do you get with your knees/thighs?
ahh.. it's interesting how some people do well in some rolls and not others. I definitely need more classes. The braces are horrible honestly as I am using foam ones and I fall out quite easily. The Pakayak cockpit is quite deep so really hard to get good connection. I need to think of other ways to get solid contact.. maybe a more permanent solution for the knee/thigh braces.
First. Get rid of that foam in your seat. You do not need it. To lie back just lift your bum off the seat. This will also take the strain off your back. When you are upside down you will fall downwards off the seat anyway. When you try to complete your roll you need your centre of gravity to be as low as possible, so no extra height on your seat. Each time you came up you looked very unstable because you were too high. Secondly, at the end of your roll stay down lying on the back deck longer, until your boat is stable. Do NOT sit up too early, which seems to be your tendency. Your head weighs about 10lbs and is about 75cms out from your kayak. This creates a lot of leverage to pull you back over if you come up too soon. Lastly, keep your hands on the paddle and the paddle in the water and, if necessary, do a forward scull to aid stability. Hope this helps.
@fishaholicboy - have you seen this thigh brace mod to the Pakayak: th-cam.com/video/x9BtdzPgcRY/w-d-xo.html ? Granted, it was necessary to put holes in the coaming for the installation, but it looks pretty solid. He shows that he can still stack (with a little bit of extra effort) with the braces in place. Cheers
Thanks for letting me know Dave! I tried to delete the ones I saw and reported the user to TH-cam also! I saw the they used my logo but a completely different user name.
