The Federal Communications Act of '96 was a real game changer, not only nationally but also on a local level, it's like the industry turned into Michael Corleone & wiped out any creative rival. Fast forward 27 years later & music has been watered down to the point of eliminating flavor.
I know some will call me a geezer having grown up in the 60's and 70's and listening to music mostly from the 70's/80's/90's, but something definitely changed about music in the early 2000's and afterward. Millennials and Gen Z apparently do not appreciate rock music the way Gen X and Boomers did. Music since the 2000's has been much softer, with more double-tracked, chorus-y vocals over acoustic guitars, pianos, etc. Everything about rock that I grew up loving...the rebelliousness, the loud, in-your-face distorted guitars and overdriven amps, the overt sexual nature of it all...it's been replaced by woke vegans singing quietly into Garage Band with a USB mic and songs literally designed NOT to offend anyone. Screw that nonsense. I want to be offended. It's part of being human. Give me balls to the wall rock and punk 7 days of the week.
the problem is that we Got sick of all the offensive music. I wrote a song how I was sick of edgy songs. Titled give me candy not edgy. I have not yet up loaded to TH-cam. Then again I am a fan of pop punk. Post grunge was pushed down our throats and become the new hair metal. really did not start in early 2000s but when metalcore become big which around 2005. It was too extreme so back lash happen in 2010s. the problem is that instead Gen Z turned to electronic music instead any new subgenres of up beat rock. so any up beat rock band struggled to get anywhere. Also we have rise of bed room rock. You still have distorted guitars. though the amps are digital now.
No Melody, No Rhythm, No Soul, No Lyrics, and most of all No Musicianship. Nowadays they are performers not musicians. Where are all the great guitarists, drummers and Bass players today.
In The Underground. New Rock Bands have garnered a more niche audience and most have the freedom to be creative since they aren't controlled by major labels. Rock is not dead but there's been a cultural shift with the rise of social media and streaming.
Every "why does contemporary music suck now?" video: "Modern music sucks!" Me: "Uh huh." Video: "Music from previous decades is the gold standard of good music." Me: "You lost me. Why is your decade of pop music suddenly so good, when it stuffers from a lot of the same compositional flaws as the more modern stuff? Like tailoring the music to the cheap instruments in your band instead of the other way around, simplistic and often nonsensical chord progressions, lack of time painting, lack of symbolism and foreshadowing in the music, lack of development for the themes, lack of variety, lack of modulation or just direct modulation if there is one, lack of well constructed endings or conclusions, not utilizing silence or space between phrases, lack of contrasting sections or textures, and forcing all done to be relatively short."
I believe it's the lack of effort on people to search the internet for new music they want to hear. Nobody is around to spoon feed people talented acts anymore.
I agree that MTV and American Bandstand aren't around to be the gatekeepers. People have to look for their own music which is something new to many people. I believe people are doing just that which is upsetting the Hot 100. Less than 2% of the U.S. population is listening to music on the Hot 100. People are listening to older acts on recordings or the thousands of alternative acts around the world.
It started sucking in 1990s, Avril Lavigne and grunge/rap especially. Some music was okay but most music starting in mid-90s especially started to REALLY suck. Dance music sucked, alaniss morisette etc. I remember no danceable music doesn't inspire or create passion. Rude, gross, grasping at straws on entertainment. I think the satanic cult thing started in the music industry really - no more creativity or rhythm but pledging to satan types. and those horrible rave clubs. I am from disco era in the SF valley. Loved motown, rock, hard rock but not the horrendous devil type music. It's a vibe that resonates in your spirit. I would say people really started changing then< too in really bad ways.
I'm only 20 and I like music that's double and triple my age and I hate today's music i have a 40 year old Led Zeppelin tapestry on my bedroom wall that my uncle gave me. My favorite band is Metallica. My favorite album is either master of puppets. Maybe even blizzard of ozz. My favorite decade is 80s. I miss... when music sounded good even when I didn't even grow up when it was being made but at least I can easily enjoy it because Spotify has everything.
As a baby boomer and guitarist born raised through the 60s on up music ain't like it used to be since the 90s. Rocks gone downhill and country ain't country it's all pop anymore. It's all mostly electronics and digital junk with no off beats and no strong ummph behind it like the old good beer when you could open it and smell the beer before you could put it near your mouth. This techno crap is cheating and these new bands act like they really accomplished something and really didn't accomplish anything but junk. We have rap, techno, and all this other weird shit and most of it doesn't make any sense at all. Like Tom McDonald he ain't even from the U.S. and from Canada and just sings crap using America politics as a front to make money and he's not even rock. Good rock bands like Deep purple, steppinwolf, Sabbath, Nazareth, rush, zztop, acdc, Hendrix, zeppelin, Riot, doors,Thin Lizzy, Bto,Nugent,Maiden, zebra, metallica, Pantera, eagles, allman bros, America, etc. that's ROCK N ROLL. This stuff we have nowadays ain't rock at all but they get the label of it which they don't deserve. Also you have these grunge and punk bands that don't even sound like music at all to me. The yelling in low tones as if their ass is on fire screaming not to take them to the ER cause they know it will be painful after they arrive there. It's awful. I'm Awake not Woke and this is what this music industry turned into. If our Rock generation butthurts people cause we don't like their music then why do they copy the songs from our generation so much and ruin a true original that shouldn't be changed in the first place and reap rewards from the original bands or singers. It's disgusting.
Music sucks because the people that pass for musicians today have no originality or creativity and even less talent. Music started it's downward spiral in the 80s and it's practically worthless now.
I can't believe, you didn't mention hip hop. Maybe you're afraid of being called "racist". When rap became popular, & kids didn't have to learn how to play a musical instrument in order to be a rockstar anymore, real music was over. You mentioned your problem with sampled drum beats. That's from hip hop. Everything else you said I agree with too, but rap has been the main problem, I think.
You are absolutely 💯 right. Very well said. Hip hop was the death of real organic music. You need very little now. Back in the day’s of real music, you needed professional musicians, live instrumentation, the ability to improvise and jam , write music, sing , play in a live concert setting, etc. It’s all fake now. And it sucks big.
Music has to breath. Quantizing kills it. Here is my take: sampling, spotify, drum machines, electronic music, lack of genuine talent, not all but most rap, the major labels. You get what the major labels put out. You hear what what Clear Channel wants you to hear. Is Clear Channel still around? Corporate mergers are hard to keep up with. Music is negatively affected by technology and the corporate world. Since we don't live in a free market, we don't get variety. Yes, you can use social media to launch your band but getting buzz is not so easy. You need a scene and a venue. Where is it?
There's actually a lot of great music today, but it's not Grammy music or on the radio unless you subscribe to Sirius XM. Baby Boomers love to criticize "modern music", but usually they're just too fucking lazy to look for it. Would rather just rehash all of their golden oldies for the umpteenth time.
yea well i have subscriptions to multiple record producers here on the tubes. hear lots of new music most of it is not very good some is but not a lot. but onto your point why the fuck i have to use my valuable time to search for good music. i mean obviously if i have to go find it then good music is rare, more music being produced now then ever before and yet its harder to find. says alot about the state of modern music.
Music gets better every day end of discussion. Idk why old musicians have to act like theyre turning over in their graves before theyre even gone lmao. Go outside give some new shit a chance think differently about something instead of always listening to that old ass brain
Music is something that has been in constant progressive evolution for a century I'd say. The 60's/70's/80's for music was a dark age, honestly only because bands, musicians needed to learn and effectively utilize meta chord progressions that were not wholly experienced or made popular by the majority of listeners. What you are experiencing is nostalgia and have learned to know that music. Unfortunately.. Most music made before the 90's is pretty outdated, under produced(the technology needed wasn't available) and under meta. I listened to a Kiss song just yesterday.. it was some of the worst "music" I've ever heard. Much of the 70's and 80's were like this. The pinnacle of rock music right now might be BMTH honestly, as far as modern music is if we are talking up to date. And if you don't like that, I think you are just holding onto nostalgia for nostalgia's sake or you grew up with certain archaic melodies and actually believe that's the best music we could come up with(it sure as shit never was)
what a load of horse shit. new music is utter garbage. if 80 music was so bad then tell me why two songs had recently re-charted from the 80's. simply because off a gieco commercial had a short clip of ratt playing round and round yea it re-charted. also a TV show played a short clip of running up that hill again from the 80's and it re-charted. i mean since it was so bad how the hell could they re-chart in this world of "epic" production of today? what a load of horse shit. archaic melodies? no truth is you need this new simple melody all the way through a song because complicated melodies are just to much for your pea brain to handle simple music for simple minds.
oh and BTW acdc in 2021 dropped powerup album it was the number one selling album in 22 countries. and guess what they sounded just exactly like acdc in the 80's have a good day. new ozzy album is amazing as well. new skid row album is quite good too new def leppard is good now ozzy and acdc are all in their 70's and the music is much better then new music.

Next you should do 5 reasons why modern music is better ( or as good and talented)
Every "why does contemporary music suck now?" video: "Modern music sucks!"
Me: "Uh huh."
Video: "Music from previous decades is the gold standard of good music."
Me: "You lost me.
Today there's no lack of talent, just a lack of creativity
I believe it's the lack of effort on people to search the internet for new music they want to hear. Nobody is around to spoon feed people talented acts anymore.
I agree that MTV and American Bandstand aren't around to be the gatekeepers. People have to look for their own music which is something new to many people. The amount of good modern rock bands-of any subgenre-is staggering. Thing is they hide out in the open and you have to look for them.

look for new things, expand you listening.
The centralization of the industries around music killed it, there were no regulations before, it was free and natural.
Ok well I’m glad to see that you’re not calling out ALL modern music LOL that would be a bad take

*Jean-Claude Madonne (John Fiddy)* is 10M times better than modern music…
Digital music is the cause a bad music today no live music anymore,
Bands were live & actually playing the music. not some computer making the sound,
Plenty of great bands out there but you just haven't found very many

what happened to music well it died in the early 90's. been a slow death since then to this garbage we have now.
Nah, the 90s was literally the peak of the entertainment industry. I would say somewhere in late 2000s
