+Vernon Parker Most likely. My personal opinion is country music has been on a downward spiral since the early 2000's. Hell you can't even pay a radio station where I live to play Alan Jackson.

To me it lost it's feel.
I miss the way that it was when it was great.
Waylon Jennings would probably not like today's Country Music.
It all seemed to start with Rascal Flatts back in 2000,yet still then Viacom did not ruin it totally then.
Viacom owns CMT and before them it was owned by people who cared about true Country Music.

    • @shamus248
      @shamus248 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

i'm a proponent of the idea that Rascal Flatts is one of the few real country acts left in the genre...I don't listen to country nearly as much as I did, but some of the artists shaped my musical taste at one point...I'm a rock and metal head now, but i still owe some of the country acts respect for being successful and giving me something to listen to...5 years ago, you could call it my favorite genre, but now it's a different story.

The storytellers are gone. That is the greatest shame. Country needs great wordsmiths like Haggard and Kristofferson, people who understand the technical construction of images that tell a story, just as rock needs the great wordsmiths like Knopfler and Waits. There is little in pop country now but assembly-lined cliches.

I think this is something you might be interested in. Zach Bryan is still new so it will not be a surprise if you never heard of him, but he has had some success on the country charts, but lets see how long that success will last now that he has spoken about the trans bud light commercial. He writes his own songs, and almost all are written by Zach Bryan alone. I just noticed that this was posted 8 years ago, so I have no expectation of getting a response.

So true...but the reason for all of that is because people are stupid. If they make simple, cookie cutter music, people are going to buy it, and they are using music as a business, not an art. That's what's wrong with music today. Music should be about making music for the sake of making it, not to make money. If people weren't being fed this bullshit, maybe they wouldn't be so simple minded and actually branch out and discover new music that they like, and like it because they like it, not because it's today's hit song. Music shouldn't be about liking a song because it's popular, and following the majorities, music should be about liking it because it makes you feel good, and not giving a shit whether others like it or not. That's my opinion as a metalhead.

9:14 that can be solved by promoting the idea that people no longer need a mainstream record company or scene dictating to them. How easy is it to discover music these days via the internet? I can't wait for the day people realize the power they have at their disposal and finally learn to discern what talent is for themselves instead of looking to some outdated 20th century tool of letting a suit dictate their musical palette.

I'm familiar with greats like Ernest Tubb, Lefty Frizzel, & Waylen Jennings. But those Broke Back Cowboys of today's country music, I'm not familiar with. That's because when I do hear their music, my stomach starts to turn and I do what ever I can to get rid of it. Now, I can relate to Merl Haggard's "If We make it through December" as I remember when money was tight as a kid. If the wife and I are fighting, Hank's "Why don't you love me anymore" or "I'm so Lonesome I could cry." There's Lefty's "Cigarette & Coffee" or "If you got the Money Honey" and George Jone's "the Race is on."
When I was 18, I was young and hoping to get a certain girl back and could relate to Brian Adam's "Everything I do, I do for you." When I was 30, I related to Smashing Pumpkins' "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" (despite all my rage, I'm still just rat in a cage), now I'm 42 married with a child, I can easily relate to Merl's "You don't care what I think, I'll just stay here and drink."
Why the fuck do I give a shit about your pickup truck, I drive a VW Golf? I grew up in the suburbs of Minneapolis-St. Paul. I didn't grow up on a farm or live down a dirt road. I did live on a snow packed road for 4 months out of the year. I don't think you have to be a southern country boy to relate to "Lost Highway" or "The Bottle let me down."

If you look at the selection of music in 95% of music stores or chain stores like Best Buy and Target that carry music in most major cites, you won't find much country or Rock, instead, they clog their music sections up with shit like Justin Bieber, Little Wayne and other suck-ass musicians. That's why I do most of my music shopping online. This lack of Brick and Mortor availability of most genres is one of the major problems with the modern music industry, IMHO. My fav country artist is Charlie Daniels, but, much like the metal band Epica, most brick and mortors don't carry his stuff.

Little story. Use to work with a couple guys in their 60s that would only listen to the same modern pop country station everyday. Of course it was the same 15 songs played over and over all day long. You know fgl, Luke Bryan, etc. A couple times when they left the room, I put it on classic country station that played 50s and 60s. Then they came back in the room they say, "what the hell is this crap!" And promptly put it back to modern station. This music has a brainwashing effect on some people. All they wanted to do was listen to the same 15 songs day after day.

We can all mention bad artists, but at the end of the day, the problem is with the record labels. There are a few labels and they don't allow their artists to express themselves. This doesn't exist within any other genre the same way it does with country. Sturgill Simpson took a different route to getting where he is today and it shows.
Hip-hop is becoming more and more experimental and almost anyone can find an artist or sound that appeals to them. Rock music has some amazing artists in the underground and there are several smaller labels that give them complete creative freedom. These opportunities don't exist in country music. Hip-hop and rock aren't as saturated because almost all of them sound completely different even if they're in the same sub-genre. Very few country artists can differentiate themselves from the pack and that's a problem.

Good point on people from different areas and different experiences circumstances giving their input on Country Music, ie. "someone who has had to live in the streets." All I've got to say is look at 'Gus Van Zandt' and the craft he left, but asking for an artist to emerge that is even half as sincere and 'real' is probably too much to ask for in today's Country music industry. Screw Nashville! Perhaps Memphis (home of the blues) needs to be built up as the 'Alternative' home for Country.

I swear, it has become the "cool thing" to defend his music, but I have no clue as to why. It is just as twangy and hillbilly-ish as the rest of country music. Folsom Prison was just as lame as everything else he did. Two chord vamps are too simple for me. Country music as a whole is lame as shit....including Johnny Cash. I respect that he went the "dark" route (why he was considered dark is beyond me)....but even that is too lame for me.

I'm 58..I was born in 1963 and grew up in Phoenix, Az so I grew up with the famous rock of the 60s, 70s, 80s famous "classic rock" but I also grew up with in the glory country years, too. Goerge jones, and Conway Twitty (whom I LOVED) Dolly, and Willie, and all the other famous country acts and I loved it all. I'd go from Bohemian Rhapsody to Momma Tried--There is little doubt I grew up in THE golden era of music. When I was born the Beatles were just about to hit--Ive lived threw it all. From Dion and the Belmonts to Black Sabbath....but NOW?? 2022?? WHAT CRAP!!!??!??!?!? Music is DONE, just like our country. All good things come to an end, sadly. I am a musician and I teach "The History of Rock n Roll" at a University (which is one if not THE most popular course on campus ( I have over 120 students a class with a waiting list) and every kid agrees. music SUCKS now. My theory is that there mathematical+there are only a finite amount of notes. You cant invent a new "A" or "C"--you cant invent the new "H" note. EVER--so what makes a song is how and where you place those finite notes in what is called a song. Well--I believe the "ideas" have been used up. There is no more "room" for a new song. So what do they do?? S#^%# like country rap and autotune in country. PUER CRAP--If it wasnt for The Weekend (foll needs to change that name--he played the superbowl and no one knows his name, lol) whom I like (because he is a 80s/90s throwback. How about the biggest COUNTRY star is from AUSTRALIA. How UN-AUTHENTIC. Know who was AUTHENTIC?? Merle haggard. Merle wasnt from India or Japan--Country is all about Americana. The fact that that frosted-tip australian rules country is a perfect example of how contrived and fake it is now. The first time I heard country rap--I almost took my own life--it's THAT BAD. Modern country is PURE CRAP

  • @barnacles62

Country music , like all music from America, derived from black slave and rhythm and blues songs. Befor you go off and brag how the Carter family and Jimmie Rogers started it all, know this. They were only the first to "record" the sound, but learned the guitar picking, harmonizing and melodies as well as the moaning lyrics from black slave songs and blues. The bluegrass sound was in fact from Irish, Scottish and English folk songs, but the banjo aspect was brought into play from blacks (it is an African instrument) and as country became the sound we hear today, and especially over the last twenty years. The only sound close to country white immigrants contributed was from these three genres, because the music played in Europe and being brought over at that time was Baroque, Polka and maybe a small collection of folk genre from given countries, usually forgotten once moved though, aside from the Irish, which is how bluegrass was born. Country and rock both were born from the same thing, and many black artists were deprived of their music, or even given the recognition they deserved. People like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis admitted to learning how to dance, play and sing from going to black bars and nightclubs. Bands like Led Zeppelin, and even Elvis took black songs and made millions, giving the true artists nothing. Maybelle Carter claimed to be the first to play a guitar with a certain finger style(basic chicken pickin) which was learned from banjo playing by blacks when they began playing guitar, it may have been new to her, but was being done WAY befor she began doing it. American music today aside from classical, is all black rooted, and boy am I glad, it would have been boring if it was not.....

Music has been getting dumbed down for about 100 years now. Classical music was WAY more complex than anything put out in the last 70 years. Early jazz, country, rock. The chords structures were much more complex than todays music. Rap has reduced "music" to a bass guitar and a bass drum kicking your brain stem over and over and over.
Exactly WHY would music regress in complexity? One would think the opposite would happen. That we would get bored and want MORE complicated arrangements.
I really do not have the answer.
One plausible answer is we require performers to be better looking today. Its like if you took a beauty contest and made the talent portion 60% of the final score, the contestants would get less attractive over time right? Well the reverse is true as well. Is it really the BEST looking performers that have the most talent? In reality better looking people tend to be more shallow, less creative as they have less reason to look deeper into themselves since the world is fixated on their appearance. This is not THE reason for crappier music, but likely part of it.
