A Swiss lock-blade folder and Fiskar hatchet ($35) do it for me the past 20+ years.
The folder is nearly twice the price of the hatchet but money well spend.
I do use cheap folding saws; breaking a $10 saw hurts much less than breaking a $ 100 saw.

Very thoughtful and on point about the three basic tools, axe, saw and knife. I went down the same path, a quality axe and saw first, then waited for almost two years before getting the upgraded knife. My thoughts changed regarding the “best” knife .

All this is spot on, I am like you, I have a BRK that I love, and a mora classic (even cheaper than the bushcrafter) that I also love.
The message is : buy quality, there is cheap quality, like Moras, and Expansive quality, like BRK, LTW... but there is also a lot of expensive and cheap crap.... I am certain you can find a 200 box crap knife lol, that's clearly what y'all need to stay away from

The Varusteleka series of knives have been my goto knives for years now and it has the only rubber overmold handle that doesn‘t give me blisters or hotspots when carving - and I also own the buscraft black. And yes, the axe and saw are where you should put the money for the basic tasks. I prefer a jauregi basque axe with 1kg head, which has a slip fit like a tomahawk and thus can have multiple handles. Easy to fieldsharpen, very tough against chipping, easy to replace handle and the best out of the box geometry on the bit. Just my two cents.

@@abhishekkulkarni9120 for the knife: dutch bushcraft knives has pretty rough testing. for the axe you can look at ben scott’s channel. I once hit a stone with the head of the bit and it flattened instead of chipping, do not have it on video and do not intend to repeat it.

A good adage would be, "If you're starting out in Bushcraft to see if you like it, buy inexpensive but good knives and axes, it's no good spending a couple of $ thousand, on knives, axes, saws etc, if you find out Bushcraft is not for you, you can always upgrade as your experience develops"

Excellent vid and a number of good points. I also own the lagom and a couple of other lts. Also grans fork hatchets and silky saw. I wanted the best and got it.
My son will probably use them more than me, but still glad I have them.

Love the Schf42d.Bought it new for around $40 just gave it to my nephew. My go to bush craft knife is a tak-1 another knife I paid around $45 for. I still use the same hatchets I bought at a garage sale when I was 16 years old I am 63 years old now and still use the same ones. I guess you could say I put my gear through the test of time. And I believe I only paid three dollars apiece for them hatchets
