    Great video Wayne. Important for us all to remember bushcraft is about the skills, not the gear. Thanks for sharing

      I think it's important that we don't see brands as essentials but as a choice when the time is right. Thanks for watching and commenting Mark ( :

    I use a stainless steel veggie strainer for my stick stove, tuna can for my gas stove, cup of wood pellets to guarantee I can have a warm fire anytime in any weather to make a cup of hot coffee or bake bannock bread or roast a sausage. I sewed my own underquilt from a Costco down blanket and just finished redesigning a waterproof rucksack to make it more comfortable to wear. I call it my frankeinpack...lol wool sweater and cook set from the thrift store. I really enjoy the problem solving aspect of bushcrafting...look around and use what's there....save my money. Hello. Thank you for covering this topic. I was starting to feel discouraged with youtubers featuring products completely out of my budget. I am a thrift store shopper myself, so I appreciate that quality can be had, if you're patient enough and determined enough to browse used stores, etc. I have just subscribed! Love your down to earth approach to getting out and enjoying the outdoors.

    Great video! I agree! Military surplus has a special place with me because I got so many Bombproof pieces of gear from them & I also used Harbor Freight Tarps for years and they actually lasted for some time. Until I made the jump to Aqua Quest tarps. So many people want to jump in with the most popular and most expensive gear instead of having fun and learning the skills. Have fun and learn is the most important part for me!

      Agreed !...you can put the best knife in the hands of an unskilled person and come to a bad result and put the cheapest knife in the hands of a skilled person and get perfection !!. Thanks for commenting buddy ! ( :

    Superb Wayne and right on point. I have both the Lixada stoves that you showcased, both lasting the test of time and were a steal for the money I paid when compared with their more expensive counterparts. The folding stove was used with my Trangia in my latest upload yesterday as was my £14 ($19) Tomshoo 750ml titanium pot that sits inside it supported nicely by its handles. I also use a Brit Army goretex bivvy bag that was as cheap as chips and standing the test of time also. Good, reliable, robust items are available at affordable prices based on research and due diligence. Then of course the kit is only as good as the knowledge and experience we have in using it regardless of costs as is often seen with the loading of fuel and top lighting of the wood gas stove to gain maximum efficiency and effect with many not rating the stove due to their own failures to load and light correctly. Thanks Wayne for sharing. Paul :)

      I guess I sometimes feel guilty about popping out a vid about a new piece of kit, just wanted beginners to know or even seasoned outdoors man for that matter. that budget gear along with a good skill set can take you just as far. Thanks for your comments, they are always appreciated. Wayne

    Just came across this vid and thought to say that I agree with all you had to say and also "Don`t be afraid or feel guilty to spend good money on more expensive gear too, that you really want..." Why I say this is because a while back I read about this man who spent $3,500.00 on his Kayak and said it was a bargain, gulp!!
    How he explained it was that for every hour that he spent with his prized Kayak he was putting anywhere between 25 to 50 $ back in his pocket because he wasn`t out somewhere else spending the big bucks to be entertained, restaurants, movies , sporting events etc.. «in fact in three years he had spent 222 12 hour days with his kayak, and at 25$ hour that`s $66,600.00.
    Also he could still sell that Kayak today for a good buck .. Be well Wayne. Thanks for your videos

      I couldn't agree more !! Most times you get what you pay for, the reason behind this vid was to encourage people who really don't have the money that there are other ways to get good value. Thrift shops can be a gold mine for outdoor gear !! I appreciate your comments and support !! Cheers

    this is a good attitude! I bought much gear for an expedition, and then came Covid + I had an accident, so everything is still there waiting, perhaps my kids are gonna use it later on for their Iceland, or Patagonia trip. And if not at least I bought everything 50% off, and only good brands with decent prices (like Mora, MSR, Victorinox, etc) I would never spend more! I also own many military surplus and "old school" items, which have the added vintage charm. And after sweating and freezing inside GoreTex/Polyester garments for ages I have moved back to wool and waxed canvas anyway...

  • @mchance818
    @mchance818 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yayyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!! You're back! I like it that you're putting out there that people don't have to break the bank for good quality gear. I bought an 80/20 wool blanket at Harbor Freight for $8, a knock off twig stove similar to the Firebox on Amazon (wish it had an ash plate) for $20 and I love the Condor Bushlore! I've used them quite a bit and they work just fine. There are tons of good products out there for reasonable/low prices. That wood didn't care that saw was from Walmart. I made my own fire starters with cotton pads, petroleum jelly and candle wax for $5 with stuff from the dollar store. I think I made about 50 before running out of wax. The most I've used is about 1/4 of one at a time and it'll burn for a few minutes. Even the Altoids like tins can be found at the dollar store.

    If I'm not sure about a piece of gear I'll just get a cheaper version and see what that can do. If it does the job it gets kept, if not I know how it needs to be better and what is needed. This has backfired on me a couple of times (don't buy cheap water filters!) but expensive kit can fail too. Still trawl through charity stores/good will/yard sales ect. Recently got 3 rucksacks, 1 still retails at £50 for £3 and 1 was a British made Karrimor, it's 30+ years old and fantastically well made. Outdoor stores in January/February always have sales, you just need to be able to plan in advance what you'll need.

    Very informative for anyone starting into bushcraft, I myself always check out used stores ,like value village etc,I do think we all get caught up in the hype with new gear and reviews but eventually we can see the difference,and sometimes it is satisfying to spend a little more for the object you have wanted when you can finally afford it ,great reminder for anyone

      You also can't go wrong most times with military gear its proven to last ,personally I find most of the older cdn gear great for the bush,the wool shirt your wearing are great they also made a thinner wool shirt but it was very itchy and not used as often

    • @highlandtrekker
      @highlandtrekker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the wool jacket, great for when it's not too cold, here in Cape Breton May to June the nights are still pretty chilli so i will get a lot of wear out of it !!

      I have the same shirt and use it a lot also I'm also in Antigonish so I understand when your talking about the weather changing,I am interested in that tarp I'm going to look it up it sounds very versatile

    • @highlandtrekker
      @highlandtrekker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For an emergency tarp, you can't go wrong...takes up no space and is very light weight. I keep this tarp in my emergency bag in my car. I think they are selling on Amazon for 39.00 but i have seen them on ebay for much cheaper !

    ATO sent me your way. Great point. When I first started bushcrafting I was all about budget gear. I have learned in some things quality (and sometime more expensive) gear is the only way to go.. but I have also realized cost should never be the deciding factor to whether a piece of gear is quality or not. As you mentioned there are some great alternatives with out a great expense. Great topic, Thanks for discussing it!

    Wool is by far the best Clothing Option for anyone interested in the Outdoors, Hunting, Camping, Fishing, Hiking etc. Here's a list of places to find quality affordable Wool gear. Big Bill's 190/210 models for Pants I prefer the Woodsman Bibs model 190 myself 28 Oz 100% wool pants. Fred Asbell for wool jackets/pullovers, Vests etc, Swanndri shirt jac, Aran sweaters or LL bean for wool sweaters and pants socks, Lobben Boots or Valenki boots both are Wool.

      @@highlandtrekker I truly appreciated that angle as way too many TH-camrs profess that it can't be done with budget-minded equipment! I have two Husqvarna axes that cost less than 1/3 what a GB would run. and I just bought a surplus Molle II rucksack from Sportsmans Guide that cost me $50 incl s/h!
