UPDATE: The R5c does actually let you record 8K 50p when on battery power, however some features may not work. (Tascam unit, Lens IS etc.) I am getting autofocus though with an EF lens and their standard adapter.

Canon has a knack of "almost" making amazing cameras and then they make this, with a crap HDMI port. I'm still on my 6dii and no intention yet to move to mirrorless. If they can come up with an RP 2 budget mirrorless, with full 4k and an LP6 (get rid of that dreaded Lp E17) and no record limits, I'd wait for that. And the amount of people complaining of lockups/freezes on their R5, R6 and now unbelievable the new R3's, this is a worrying trend. We'll see what happens with the R5c and any teething peoblems. Its a great camera, but I could never afford one. But for those that can, enjoy.

A stunning example of a passionate dedication to throw light into the meanders of a complex camera. Unbiased opinions, easy to follow technical explanations, perfect matched imageries/voice-over editing, crispy clear voice recording, no annoying background music, well timed comparative insertions with similar still/video cameras, well, a masterpiece of TH-cam camera review.
Looking forward to episode #2 with same in-depth analysis on its real life performance.

I heard that the video mode in the R5 C uses DPAF version 1 instead of version 2 on the R5, and this could be a big downfall when switching from the R5 to this R5 C. Can you guys test the difference and share the results? Also, the dynamic range compared to the R5 will be crucial too. Also, the 4K 120 image quality compared to the r5 will be great as well! Thank you again!

Excellent video as always! I have an EOSR and have been waiting for 3 years to upgrade to a better mirrorless. The heating issues of the R5 (and the fact that the production company I work for has one) made me pause on buying one but this looks INCREDIBLE for us hybrid. I get the issue with no IBIS for stills, however, my EOSR and NONE of the DSLR cameras I have shot stills with has EVER had IBIS so that is not a deal killer for me. The R5 had the side edge wobble issue with wide RF lenses that made many users HATE the fact that you couldn't turn IBIS OFF...so no IBIS in a cinema camera is no problem. That's what the Ronin RS2 is for, right? I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these and for all practical purposes have a C70 and R5 in one!

I'm in exactly the same situation! I almost switched to a Sony FX3 from the EOS after 3 years, but really glad I waited! This looks phenomenal. More resolution, much better photo camera, complete video assist tools, TIMECODE 😃 and of course that gorgeous EVF. For a few more hundred over the FX3, it's a no brainer. Staying in the RF system!

Might finally bail on my Sony stuff. Shot Canon forever until they fell behind, then got an A7S2, A73 and now an A7S3 which I absolutely love. But I do prefer Canon color and I still have 7 awesome L lenses since I still use my 5D3 for stills. I could get at least $6k for my A7S3 and 3 lenses, and have enough $ leftover to get some CFExpress cards and a cage. Might be time to switch back.

I'd be very interested about the DR and hoping the put CLOG2 in it soon. I would jump ship from my metabones adapted GH5s' to get incredible autofocus in full frame. I find I'm using my NDs way less than I used to for outside work, because I don't care to have much depth of field when doing b-roll, whether I'm on a gimbal or handholding. It makes focusing easier and seeing everything in focus is pleasing to the eye. In additon, the Tascam XLR adapter is what I've been waiting for. Huge for my corporate work. There was a time when I wanted IBIS in all these cameras, but now, I just want a camera without rolling shutter, and one that can be properly weighed down for smooth handheld work. Rigging this up with the external batteries, a Ninja V, and a proper top handle will be INCREDIBLE.

    Canon is back! Kinda.
Honestly I haven't been impressed Canon in recent years, but this camera really could change my opinion. As a side note: it really shows how well Canon does UI/UX here - so many buttons, and amazing menus in both photo and video modes!
I'm still a bit sad that they haven't come up with this sooner. So many Canon DSLR users upgraded to the R5, because they like the brand, Canon's colors and image quality fully aware of the fact that they will have to deal with the known overheating issues.
Canon seemed to downplay this for really long time. And suddenly they came up with this... I think there should be a buy-back scheme. Not 100% of the price but at least something.

Thank you for this great first look, Carl. What I am most concerned about at this point is the AF performance in Cine Mode, compared to the R5. The Cine OS doesn’t seem to incorporate some of the AF features I’ve come to love on the R5, such as animal eye-AF and Touch and Drag AF. I’m also concerned that AF may be slower to respond than the AF on the R5. Please test this when you can!

Great insightful thoughts on the significance of R5c and I totally agree at $4500 R5c has done a permanent move at defining what a "budget" cinema camera can do. One thing is though, has Canon opened the new multishoe protocol to third party or only Tascam has access to it so far? I don't like the shape and layout of tascam unit, worrying about putting too much stress on the hotshoe overtime once you plug one or two XLR cables in. Hope Rode and Sennheiser could have their takes on this multishoe soon.

Thanks Canon for giving such a great option for cinematographers! One thing that I wanted to know is if the battery life with the LP-E6NH is different when using it in photo mode. Does the video mode and the photo mode calculates the same amount of battery life. This question might seem to be a stupid question, but since both modes are completely separate in the same body, and the fact that we can control the fan, does it gives the same battery information and capacity?? Is the battery life capacity in photo mode only is the same as the R5?? Or it is the same in video mode even if we use it only in photo mode?? I know the camera is more video-centric and has 8K RAW modes, but logically taking JPEG and RAW stills is not as demanding as taking these big video files with the LP-E6NH. Maybe I am wrong with that statement but wanted to have some clarification about that.

Just got my R5c today, Oddly in Video the Battery runs out in roughly 1h (recording 4k xavc),
and you cant turn it on in Video anymore.
BUT in Photo Mode the Battery stills shows 31% left, which is really really odd to see.
That there is 1/3 juice left, but its seems not enough for video - cant quite wrap my head around it.
