Great review as always. But the complaints are already out, mainly no IBIS and Micro HDMI. canon have this knack of always making "almost" perfect cameras. But we'll wait and see if there are lockups/freezes like the R5, R6 and now R3 are experiencing.
@@cameralabs Thank you, I had just one more question. Are the raw files the same as the r5?... I ask because if they aren't CapureOne's going to try to squeeze another 300 outta me lol
Holy cow, a review which actually shows good examples? One that showed the buttons up close and talks about situational use rather than just reading a spec sheet and mimicking every other TH-camr ? You got my sub. Well done.
Another great review. No frills, just the info we all want. For the eagle eyed among us, I would say that the original R5 in 4K HQ mode still looks a hair sharper than the oversampled 4K on the new R5C at 15:07 👀
The youtube channel I've been looking for. Absolutely love the side by side comparisons that must have taken a lot of time to do instead of just talking in approximates and giving a few samples that aren't super helpful unless looked at side by side. Subscribed at first sight🤩
Removing the IBIS was completely fine and I’m happy to buy the r5c given that the IBIS in the r5 had that terrible wobble effect. Digital stabilisation looks great in these tests. Great video!
Great review, Gordon. Thank you. I read the R5C has lower bit rates and would require less computing power to process than the R5, possibly less time to process, justifying the higher price to me! Do you agree? Some R5C key formats can be recorded to a SD card rather that CF Exxpress B (8k All-I, Raw 3K) . Bitrates: 8k HEVC= 540 Mbps (vs 1300 on the R5 ) . Would rather spend more on camera gear than on computing power and CFX cards. Thoughts anyone?
Actually lower bit rates may mean smaller files, but with higher compression that can be harder work for a computer to edit. But it can also depend on tge codec. Try to access files made with both cameras to compare on your computer
Circling back, having had the R5C a week now: it's a beast. Loving it. It's the Canon camera that I wanted, ever since I had to move to the Panasonic GH4 for video.
Great review Gordon! So, it appears we now have two cameras for two types of hybrid shooters. One is primarily for photographers who sometimes shoot video (R5), and the other is primarily for videographers who sometimes shoot stills (R5C). That segmentation is driven mostly - IMO - by the lack of IBIS. Otherwise, I could have completely replaced my R5 with the R5C.
@@cameralabs Do you think the lack of IBIS will make the 5.2mm VR shake worse when using a gimbal vs a regular R5? That said it has 8K 60FPS raw light which is very good though you can't wire by focus with a standard battery.
@@cameralabs Thanks. I know you the VR with 5.2 needs a gimbal(since VR can't have any shake) but even with the IBIS R5 but wondering if that had some benefit when on a gimbal.
Thanks for the review Gordon! Does the menu system offer control over the fans in Photo mode or only Video? My use case is for long-exposure astrophotography. It would be nice to be able to cool down the camera sensor, esp. during the summer months where thermal noise can be an issue.
Now that's a great idea! The fan doesn't operate in photo mode and there's no menu for them as they assume no-one would want it, but I wonder if it would be beneficial for this application?
@@vaskoobscura_ Depends on the fan, and how it is mounted. Dedicated astronomy cameras all use fans in their peltier cooler designs and are able to avoid vibration problems. But since Canon didn't design the fans for this purpose, it may indeed pose a problem at high focal length. In any case, per Gordon above, the fans don't operate in photo mode.
@@cameralabs hy! is it worth the hzassle for additional 10fps on 8k, of making it even bulkier and hzeavier, or limiting your movement withz a kable that atteces into your sling bag to a battery?
Ugh. Or perhaps, as an R5 owner, I should thank Canon for saving me $4,500. No IBIS is a deal killer for someone like me who loves a minimal, hand-held experience. The electronic stabilization retains micro-jitters as did my original EOS-R... I never used it. As for stills, once I received my R5, I never used the original EOS R again--it's really nice to not worry about motion blur with somewhat lower shutter speeds in the 1/15 and 1/30 range, even 1/60th at times. And I don't buy the overheating excuse as the Lumix S1h is very similar in design (cooling system) and has been reported to never overheat even in the worst of conditions (Dan Watson's channel and others). And then, no mention of Clog2... (firmware update in the future?). But this is a cool design (oops, unintended pun).
No IBIS is ludicrous, blaming it on heat with that giant fan 🤣 my S1 & S5 shoot 5k with zero heat issues. Thought this could have been the canon I've been waiting for since I sold my 5D mkii but nope. :(
@@DreamReleases I shoot majority video, so a robust, video centric camera is what I'd love, I want the canon AF from the R5 (which this also doesn't have) and I want to be able to use my canon lenses. For years I've been wondering why they can't just make a camera that's between the crippled stills cameras with video and the high end cinema cameras, with a price that it's worth it for them to potentially lose out on a handful of sales of cinema cameras. I thought this was finally it, the robust video camera for the run and gun, one man band shooter. How hard is it to make an R5, with ALL the R5 features that won't overheat.... They've added a fan, but removed the better AF and the "heat creating' IBIS... What's the fan doing because realistically this should run cooler than an R5 without it! They're missing out on thousands of sales from 10 a penny shooters like me. Rant Over :D
@@andytrace I think R3 is a great option, I decided to go for the R3 probably, would love a bit smaller form factor but I think it is a better hybrid solution.
00:24 - 1st pre-review statement "it does not overheat" - 2022 sign of the times😄 Great preview Gordon - thank you! I am surprised the IBIS has been removed AFTER ADDING active heat management (scratching my head - why?). The essence of running and gunning rig (in particular in the light of aggressive price point - well done Canon) is the freedom of hand held minimalism - one lens, one body, top handle - DONE. (anyone to film a car interior with a gimble rig during a crowded expo. Yeah, no.) Also it's a bit ugly in a "i could used to it cos it's a 8K video cam" kinda way 😄
This is a really great review. Thank you for posting. You've become my first port of call for reviews these days. I love the fact that you give clear, unbiased reviews , don't rely on clickbaiting or negativity to get attention. I'm still happy with my R5 ( apart from the mciro HDMI ! ) and the video limitations don't really affect but this seems to me to be a fantastic camera and no doubt will please many.
Thank you for your video! I want to switch cameras but one of the most important things that catch my attention is the difference in the color. Do you have the same White Balance and the same settings and you have such different results? The r5 is way better as a color result comparing the r5c. Again thank you so much. I would appreciate any clarification on this.
Really great review Gordon, especially the chart work highlighting the corner cutting going on in the R5 model. I was wondering are you able/allowed to upload some of the test footage so folks can see how the likes of Canon's RAW Lite and the XAVC codecs handle in post?
Thanks for the review Gordon! Does the menu system offer control over the fans in Photo mode or only Video? My use case is for long-exposure astrophotography.
The fans aren't active in photo mode, but as someone who's also into astro, i wondered about the possibility of built-in cooling. Turns out it's nowhere near cold enough - you need refrigeration, not a fan.
thanks for the great review again. I was really waiting on that one to decide between the R5 or R5C, now I made up my mind and gonna order the R5 sadly.. the no ibis is a deal breaker for me as I shoot lots of photos at dusk/dawn and need the extra stab to lower the iso a bit or up the shutter speed etc.. but if I was more video centric it would be a no brainer for this price.. I'm a bit sad about the no ND filter or the rolling shutter still being pretty bad to be honest and I REALLY hope they'll push the eye AF for animals in a firmware update in video mode cos that's really crap.. I do wonder if they'll update the R5 though for vehicule auto focus since they implemented it into the R5C and it's only a software thing anyway..
Unfortunately rolling shutter is a spec thats hard wired into the sensor right at the beginning when design was in progress. No amount of processing power can speed it past the limits.
Thanks Gordon. I'm watching this on a mediocre 36" 1080p television, and your enlarged samples at 13:30 still showed that each resolution increase provides significantly more detail over the other. However, Canon is notorious for their soft 1080p. Can you tell me the bitrate of that particular example? Do you think the 1080p output of the R5C is good, bad or indifferent?
Hi Patrick, there are so many different bit rates depending on codec, depth and frame rate that I'm not bothering to try and present anything coherent. I'd direct you to the specs on canon's website. As for the quality, it looked fine to me, but please do compare my res chart example to my other reviews for a direct comparison.
@@patrickfitzgerald2861 for you, ok! It was about 50mbit/s measured from the file, but encoded in 10 bit 4:2:2 HEVC, so it would have been bigger in H.264.
@Gordon Laing, Canon Europe also confirms that R5 has DPAF2 over DPAF1 on R5C and C70.. DPAF2 for stills, DPAF1 for video. Are the same between r5 and R5c R5c used the same AF as the R5 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF II) when in video mode and am VERY disappointed to find out that the R5c uses the same AF as the C70 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF with iTR AF X).
Thanks for this. The one thing that makes this camera unsuitable for me is that you boot it up in video OR still. No switching quickly in the middle of action between video and still. Is that right?
Hi Gordon, thanks for the great overview. I have a question please. Can you use a power bank on the R5C? If so what do you recommend Thanks, Cliff Colreavy
Goodday Mr. Laing... Thank you for all your outstanding and honest reviews that I have read and seen... I hope I may ask you the following: do you remember if the Canon EOS R5C has the electronic level in the viewfinder/screen that the R5 has (in photo-mode...)?
@@cameralabs 🤣 Well, for one thing you never try and pull a Kasey move on them! Canon Cripple Hammer indeed! 😅 And even though I have my own issues with their products, I give them five stars for producing them in nations that are NOT engaging in genocide . . . rant over and out. 😉
Thanks for the thorough review! Do other cameras have overheating issues? Great that the problem was addressed, but a fan, in itself, but that also bulks-out the camera, seems like an odd fix.
Overheating is a problem for most cameras that film high quality video, so in pro environments where it's a deal-breaker, they generally fit fans to cool them down. Most cinema cameras have fans.
Can you tell us if the AF is akin to the C70 in video mode, or more like the R5? The C70, in my experience, has extremely subpar autofocus performance compared to the Canon R5. Since Canon essentially is running two separate OSes, my concern is that the R5c has C70-level AF performance in video mode, which would be a non-starter for me. Can you tell us if that's the case? I watched your entire video, but perhaps I missed your comment on it. Thanks for your hard work on the review.
I should have done some AF tests, but ran out of time. Anecdotally I found the Af was noticeably slower in movie mode than in photo mode, and slower than the R5 when that cameras is filming video. I could improve it by boosting the response and speed menus, but have a feeling it is slower overall. I'll try and follow-up with a final sample/
@@cameralabs Thanks Gordon. I was afraid of that. So unfortunate, because Canon already had a GREAT system with the R5. This is a regression, in some ways, for video. Two steps forward, and two steps backward. Of course, some couldn't care less about AF, so this camera will be perfect for them, but as a one-person shooter 99% of the time, great AF, like on the R5, is a must.
@@9to5Mac I agree, the R5C is for seasoned videographers who'll probably manually focus and sort out their own stabilisation, whereas the R5 is better-suited to smaller productions - like mine!
I'm in the same boat. The R5's AF is fast enough for me to shoot sports (in video mode). I'd be all over this R5c if it performs as well (AF-wise) in video mode as the R5. But if it's a step in the wrong direction, then it would be a waste of money for what I do.
I been shooting motorsports video for the past year with the R5 and was really excited for the the R5c and pre-ordered it yesterday but canceled my pre-order after learning the R5c doesn't have all the same AF features in video 🤷♀️😢
Thank you for this video. The removal of the IBIS really put me on the fence. It was really useful for handheld video specially with vintage lenses. Also I'm wondering if this camera will become obsolete in a year. Other manufactures like Sony have reengineered their internals and added heat sinks to dissipate heat sooooo that begs the question, is the R5c already dated hardware?
Well it is based on the R5 which is over a year and half old, so you could base it on that. But there's still nothing at this price that does 8k, 4k 120 etc
@@wcsdiaries Nah, just watch the video. It has a ton of useful information, and most likely will prevent you from asking more questions the video already answered.
Incredible review. Thanks! Question, I shoot 4K video of surfing at the beach currently with an R6 and a RF100-500MM lens. My camera overheats within 15 minutes even without actually shooting. I think it is the constant AF maybe. I am considering the R5c solely to eliminate the overheat issue. I am mostly shooting at the end of the zoom range at 500mm, do you think the lack of IBIS in the R5c will be a deal breaker for me? To much shake at 500mm? Just when I thought the perfect camera was finally coming out, they went and removed IBIS! Thanks.
You have a few options. First is to record externally with your existing kit. Second is to get a different Canon with less or no overheating, like the R5C or even the R3. The lens has OIS which will be doing most of the work at long telephoto lengths, so you wouldn't miss IBIS hugely at around 500mm. Maybe rent one of the other cameras to try it out first.
@@cameralabs Thanks for the response. I have always recorded externally! Atomos Ninja. Still overheats without even recording. Your comment about the IBIS not being a big issue at 500mm with the in lens stabilization is the feedback I was looking for. I will probablly buy the R5c.
@@AmmerSlammer I would still advise trying before buying! But yes, the longer the focal length, the more of the stabilisation is done by the optics not the IBIS.
Thank you for the review Gordon. One question: you don't comment on the rolling shutter tests. They're a bit quick and I'm a(n old) newbie, so I don't really know what to think though my first impression is not good.
Your impression is correct. Both have poor rolling shutter. This is because the high resolution sensor cannot be read out quickly enough. Canon's competition in the video arena tends to fit their cameras with lower resolution sensors that can be read out more quickly, so are more appropriate for video.
Gordon, excellent job as always. I have been following your R3 and R5C reviews closely. I have used the R5 for a few videos projects and find the image being a little red which I have to correct in post-- during the video during the R5 vs R5C resolution comparison the R5 color seems a little red as well. Thoughts on this?
You're right, I noticed that too AND the white balance was set to the same Kelvin value on both and under controlled lighting, so I'm not sure why. I'll look into it, but not sure I'll find an answer.
Does the R5c or R5 have aperture or shutter priority in video mode like the Sony A7siii? I shoot real estate videos and with the Sony I can set my ISO to 12800 and let the aperture and/or the shutter automatically adjust as I walk from room to the next. This is especially helpful when shooting in a house with poor light or with lighting conditions that are drastically different from one room to the next.
I think Canon only offers full auto or full manual, either with auto ISO if desired. It's best to look shutter once you're filming and use ISO to compensate for exposure differences and aperture at a push.
That's a great question and the answer is I don't know but I will try and find out! You can record 8k 50p RAW LT under battery, but you'll need extra juice for 60p.
Excellent video Gordon. Can you test the electronic IS coupled with the RF lens OIS in hand held photography, mainly in low light and lower shutter speeds?
Great review Gordon, have you tried the Canon RF-EF ND converter on this or the R5? It'd be good to know whether there are any colour issues, otherwise looks like a good solution to the lack of ND's, if you're still using EF lenses.
Hi Gordon, Thanks for the detailed review. I don't have 8K in my mind. Is it a good idea to go with R5 If I'm shooting only up to 4k60 and occasional 4k120? Will the R5 overheat shooting 20-25 mins 4K60fps videos?
Sadly yes the R5 will overheat at 4k 60. The only modes where it didn't overheat for me were 4k up to 30p in non-HQ mode and any 1080. If you want a super-reliable 4k camera, I'd consider the Sony A7S III or Lumix S1H.
Thanks for the video. Will the R5 overheat only on continues 45min recordings only?, or can it withstand hours of clips 10 secs each without overheating. So torn between the 2 cameras.
Hey Gordon, very nice video, thanks to share it. Out of curiosity: if you use both optical IS and Digital Standard con R5C, do you get better or worse stabilization than Sony A7 IV with both IBIS and optical IS? Thanks
Thanks a lot for that great review! Unfortunately I can't find any info about the overhearing in 4k120. Is that issue fixed too ? Cause I use it a lot with the R5 and it s very frustrating
I filmed a 4k 100 clip lasting 40 minutes in realtime on a single battery charge, no overheat with fan on low. So in playback at 25p, 4x slower, it lasted 2hrs 40 mins.
It is very interesting to watch your videos regularly . I have both cameras R5 and R5C, I'm missing The R5 4K HQ sharpness quality to watch it right to TV without editing in my new R5C. the question is how can I use my new R5C as I used my R5 in mode 4K HQ (Ufine) right to watch it on tv without editing . I tried my R5C in all tv watchable formats without editing but I couldn't get the same sharpness quality as R5? Please help me .
That must be the difference between the way the video is encoded or processed in the R5 system vs the R5c movie system. That's too deep a dive for me to do, sorry, but Canon may be able to help.
Hi Gordon, I've watched all r5c reviews today but no one talks about dynamic range in video mode. Is it any better than R5 which is not very good compared to similarly priced cameras from other brands?
It's essentially the same as the R5 given the same type of file, such as C-Log 3. But i don't do formal DR tests so I can't give an exact figure on it.
Hi, thank you for sharing this interesting video. I have a question please: can you tell me if this Canon R5C camera works well with the Canon Zoom, EF-S 18-135mm f / 3.5-5.6 IS USM lens for making 4K documentaries around the world? I inform you that I do not use the zoom while shooting. Thank you.
You would need an Ef-EOS R adapter and to shoot in cropped Super 35 mode as it's an APSC lens. It's a budget lens and this is a high-end cinema camera, so probably not the best pairing.
@@ExploringWorldTH-cam there are two 24-105mm lenses in the RF mount, either the expensive f4L or the cheaper f4-7.1 which is the equivalent model to yours in overall buld and quality. You may enjoy this video: th-cam.com/video/ySzMkQ0Sjik/w-d-xo.html
@@cameralabs I thank you so much for your suggestion. Out of curiosity: in your opinion is it better using the cheap f4-7.1 Canon or a zoom of another brand as Tamron or Sigma? Thanks again.
Would the target audience really turn off IBIS? Bearing in mind that on the original R5 this would also turn off lens stabilisation. Quite possibly the real reason is that in order to conduct heat away from the sensor (although not the only component generating heat) it must be thermally, physically connected to a heat sink, which would make IBIS very much more difficult.
Could this in theory solve the wobble issue on wider angles? For example if I use RF 15-35mm 2.8 IS with R5 I will get wobble on wide end due to IBIS and can’t have lens IS on by itself. Whereas with the R5c, there would be no wobble on wide end since you would only be using the IS from the lens?
I think we're both right! I agree the heatsink may have made IBIS difficult or impossible, but also that the target audience do normally film with gimbals or stands. And as Alex commented here, IBIS is great for still photos, but can result in undesirable warping on video especially with wide lenses, so not having it may be seen as a benefit to videographers.
@@alexmainwaring you're right and I meant to mention that as I'm finding IBIS doesn't play well with video and wide lenses. Great for photos, but less so for video.
A lot of video shooters who work on sets don't want the sensor to be moving. It adds a margin of error. Nothing worse than an expensive take that gets ruined by IBIS wobble or jerkiness. Same reason why cameras like the GH5s had IBIS removed. Also same reason why none of the cine cams by major brands have stabilization. Directors and DoPs prefer ultimate levels of control over everything.
@@rodriguezahr I find IBIS really useful for photography, so I'd miss it on the r5C. Also, the video AF is better on the R5, so even though it can't film for as long, I'd personally be able to exploit the better video AF over the longer recording times. Plus I can switch between photo and video faster on the r5.
There seems to be a few misses. The battery is a significant issue in video and certainly an external power supply will be required. Also the micro HDMI is a major problem. I'm also not sure why Canon would include so much photo power without including IBIS. The electronic stabilization at 1.1 crop looks pretty poor and the extended electronic stabilization has too much crop. I understand that most video people would not use the IBIS but for photo not having it is disappointing.
@@vitaminb4869 It is very fragile. Just a little pressure on it can break the connector in the camera or on the cable. For most pro videographers this is a huge problem.
@@vitaminb4869 Absolutely not. That same cable protector also comes with the R5 and unfortunately doesn’t offer much protection from damaging the connectors in the camera or cable.
Great presentation Gordon. After your video I preordered the R5C. I still have two questions, have you also compared the sharpness in 4k 120fps between the R5 and the R5C and is the dynamic range for the normal eye about the same between both bodies? Thank you for the really informative video.👍
Yep, the Dr looks similar for the same profiles. I did also compare 4k 120 and like the R5, it's softer than 'normal' 4k, but I'd like to retest final firmware to re-evaluate it.
@@cameralabs I want to know your opinion on canon R5c . I have been c200 and Nikon D810 , D500 shooter . I got into an accident with c200 and had to sell it unfortunately. So looking to upgrade my gears totally, gonna sell my Nikon gears soon. I'm thinking about getting either canon r5c and r6/r5 or Sony fx3 and Sony a9iii(if it releases this year) else a9ii . I want to buy canon R5c (coz I already have a lot of ef lenses) but I'm worried that video af and dynamic range might not be as good as Sony fx3. I shoot weddings, events, fashion, sports.
I know you said that photo mode is strictly photo mode, but is there no option (or future possibility) at all for C3 mode to do a quick video clip like the R5 does? And can you improve the boot time when switching from photo to video mode by turning off sensor cleaning?
That's a good question, but I don't know. I suspect not, but the reboot time when switching is only a few seconds. Turning off sensor cleaning may help, but there was a bug in my beta model that prevented it.
@@cameralabs Thanks for the response. Do you think since IBIS was removed, Canon will give us a super16 or super35 Digital IS option in the future? Just like the C70 has with super16... This would help the run and gun type videographer that doesn't have interest in using a gimbal and going handheld.

No IBIS, No full size HDMI. I guess they will keep it for Canon R1 with a higher price (which is their flagship camera) It’s part of the Canon marketing.
You always do the best reviews and always answer all of my questions! Cheers to you Bro from Atlanta, GA. I have an R5 and just bought an Atomos to fix some of the my issues. But false color in camera and no more line skipped 4k and 4k60 is intriguing.
@@presise1620 I'd have to refer back to the results here. I've published nine videos since this one, so it's not fresh in my mind anymore, sorry! I tend to make a review then move onto the next one.
Imo you the best footage of externals of R5c, all other videos I saw was done in some sort of ambient or dim lighting. Thank you for amazing review of this really amazing camera (despite some downsides, such as micro hdmi).
Thanks! I decided to film my b-roll with a bright studio light against a plain background so I could stop-down the lens and not worry about having a nice blurred background!
Weeeell, for the clips where I filled an empty card, you can work out the file size. I wasn't going to delve into bit rates here, those are all specs you can get from the website.
Great detailed review with samples. Noticed that the camera shoots only 10 bit still images compared to 14 bit of R5? At least that is what the spec of B&H is telling. Is that true? If it is, no hybrid shooters will buy this camera at all. A massive lose of dynamic range will definitely be visible! Or was that just a mistake from B&H!
Gordon, thanks for letting me use clips for my latest video. I think a lot of people are confused by the R5c and not sure who it's for or why its set up differently to the R5. You've done a good job of clearly looking at the benefits, and addressing the concerns of people interested in this camera. Congrats on getting the R5c in time for the announcement - A big coup!
@@cameralabs that sucks. I shoot sports w/ the R5 and often switch on the fly between shooting stills and 4K120 (and sometimes 8K30) clips. Although in theory with some extra heavy duty power bolted on, I could just shoot 8K60 all the time without overheating. Combined with a fast SS, and you could pull 33Mpx stills from any point in the clip while still having the video as a bonus. Basically creating a 60fps stills camera. I guess it will depend on what kind of external power can be used to allow for 8K60.
@@wlhanley1981 I agree, it won't be as quick for switching between photo and video, but it's not designed for that - it's mostly a video camera that can also be used for stills. I'd say the R5 is better suited for what you're doing.
As always, excellent work Gordon! I've been in search of the 'perfect' hybrid for years now, this Canon R5c might just be it! I was positive my perfect hybrid was a self made myth up until Sony released the A1. I already owned the R5 and C70 at this point keep in mind. I picked up the A1 and FX3, A7S3 with mindset of switching ecosystems due largely to 4k and 8K with no overheating. Admittedly, my own assumptions here were my an expensive lesson. I assumed Sony would play nice with Atomos. It does up to 4k 60p, anything above that, not an option as Sony doesn't output 8K via HDMI like Canon does with the R5. So with my Canon R5 I was able to use my Atomos Ninja V+ to extend all options the R5 offered. With Sony, I was held back to in camera because Sony has yet to unlock the HDMI out (for 8K) for Atomos or other external options. They did the same thing locking down 4k 120p out in the A7S3 and FX3 as well so again, no Atomos Ninja V+ options. It would seem Sony wants to keep things in camera. Nice way of upselling the Sony tough line of CFexpress cards I guess? So now on my gear shelf, I've expanded to include the R3 for other work along side my R5, C70 and R. The Sony Shelf has the A1, FX3, A7S3 but I feel that Sony's days may be numbered with me as I have been reaching time and time again for the Canon equipment purely out of compatibility in most cases. I had a deposit in place for the R5C from about four or five months ago when rumours started swirling about it so come March 15th, I'll have one and hopefully... I can stop overlapping gear. Probably not, but hopefully. lol 👍😂 A couple questions - 1) the R5c's 8K RAW out, that isn't the same ProRES Raw as found in the R5 is it? 2) Do you think the new RF 5.2 dual fisheye lens will work on this camera offering the ability to shoot 8k 60p (when attached externally for power) VR? Again, many thanks for your expertise and testing!
Gordon, I looked into the two questions I asked you and Canon themselves on the official support page for the R5C answer both of these questions. Yes, 8K Raw out via HDMI is ProRES Raw if used with the Atomos Ninja V+ (8K is only compatible with Ninja V+ where as 4K ProRes is with regular Ninja) and yes, the 5.2 Canon VR Lens works with the R5C. 👍🔥
I sold my R5 with the intention to switch over to Sony but now that the R3 is out and the R5C is coming out I might stay with Canon. I just really wanted Canon to step their game up and innovate and not cripple their cameras so much. Sony seems to be doing a really good job at that. I am now looking to get the R3 and a C70 or R3 and R5C.I was looking into getting the FX3 and A7IV. How do you feel about your C70? Being that you have these cameras what would you do?
It seems like the fan could be useful for long exposure astro photography, often high ISO images can be cleaned up by cooling the sensor. I wonder if the R5C could be used to achieve this....?
Ok yea I'll admit Canon came real good this rounds but 2 things #1 why are they using a Micro HDMI out sigh. #2 more importantly can the Canon R5C do Live Stream & Record at the same time? Could you test & find out cuz R5 R6 RP can't which is lame. Thanks
I'll try to find out number 2 for my follow-up video! As for micro HDMI, it's inherited from the R5 as it's essentially a modified camera, so they couldn't - or wouldn't - change too much to meet this price point. But this could have been avoided had they used full size HDMI on the original R5 in the first place, grrr!
Another very good review. I have the R5, which I really like, but I don’t care for video, so it suits me well. I think the R5C offers great value if you want both stills and video in one compact camera.
@@philfyphil judging by the footage showing the combination of the digital and lens stabilisation it looked to give good results. And I guess those using video regularly would use a gimbal. Not that I do much video to know mind. To me the way it is a camera that will produce high quality stills and video for the price point is pretty good I think.
@@cameralabs that is true. I would honestly prefer backup recording and ibis but this does seem like a good studio cam for those with canon lenses. I just wish they kept ibis and allowed dual raw recording onto two CF cards.
I cant help but noticing how many GREAT photography cameras are judged on how well they shoot video. I know video has become so important, just not to me. So many of the cameras released in the last 2 years are outstanding photo cameras but were taking down a notch because of some issue shooting video. I shoot Sony(A9)and smile every time some youtuber whines about no picture profiles for video, I would have been very happy to shoot with a Canon R6 but folks went on about 30 min record limit and an occasional overheat in video. I am happy to see a camera like the R5C because as video resolutions become so high companies will have to make more dedicated video centric cameras and leave us photographers alone, 1 more thing FLIP SCREENS are better than articulating screens with 600mm lenses 🤣, yes I know I am old school and whining but that is my story and I am sticking to it✌
You're right, of course, but the questions for the manufacturers are always the same: How many units can we sell, and how long will the model last? It's a real dilemma in these days of constant updates. For example, the "antique" Panasonic bridge cameras (FZ300, FZ2500), which are now nowhere near state of the art, have suddenly started selling again! How come? I'm not sure anyone knows. But regardless, if you have the cash, this camera will provide excellent results for both stills and video. . . just make sure to insure the damn thing! Finally, I find it hilarious that modern cameras might actually burst in to flames! That's not something anyone even imagined way back in the film days! 😎
The R5 and this r5c are marketed as being great at both, a9 isn't. I wouldn't knock a camera for doing what its supposed to do, and anybody complaining the a9 isn't a video camera needs to read spec sheets better. Since the r5 and r5c are both pushed by Canon as being video cameras, they deserve criticism when they don't deliver or praise when they actually do what's promised.
Great review, but I think I'll go for the r5 if I'm ready to ditch my 5dmk4 because I only shoot still and for the 2 videos I make a year the c isn't worth it I think.

Well done.
Thanks!
Another great review. No frills, just the info we all want. For the eagle eyed among us, I would say that the original R5 in 4K HQ mode still looks a hair sharper than the oversampled 4K on the new R5C at 15:07 👀
I'd agree from that test, but remember it is pre-production. I think in real-life terms you'd be unlikely tell much difference between them.
The youtube channel I've been looking for. Absolutely love the side by side comparisons that must have taken a lot of time to do instead of just talking in approximates and giving a few samples that aren't super helpful unless looked at side by side. Subscribed at first sight🤩
Thankyou! Yes, the comparisons take ages, but I think are very important
@@cameralabs appreciate it!!
Can it record from 8k downsampled 4k in 60p?
All 4k from 24-60 is oversampled and I show it in the video
Good point you make about compression, Gordon. The only way to know is to try them both as you say. Will report if I can test. Cheers. @@cameralabs
Circling back, having had the R5C a week now: it's a beast. Loving it. It's the Canon camera that I wanted, ever since I had to move to the Panasonic GH4 for video.
Gordon: like I always say, you are the best balanced reviewer.
Thankyou!
That's pretty much it!
@@cameralabs Do you think the lack of IBIS will make the 5.2mm VR shake worse when using a gimbal vs a regular R5? That said it has 8K 60FPS raw light which is very good though you can't wire by focus with a standard battery.
I had the exact same thought. If the R5c had IBIS I would have flipped my R5 for it.
@@83442handle I have a feeling you can't - or shouldn't - use IBIS with the 5.2mm anyway, but I'd need to check.
If you're doing a long exposure in photo mode why would you want a fan adding vibration to your camera?
@@vaskoobscura_ Depends on the fan, and how it is mounted. Dedicated astronomy cameras all use fans in their peltier cooler designs and are able to avoid vibration problems. But since Canon didn't design the fans for this purpose, it may indeed pose a problem at high focal length. In any case, per Gordon above, the fans don't operate in photo mode.
@@cameralabs hy! is it worth the hzassle for additional 10fps on 8k, of making it even bulkier and hzeavier, or limiting your movement withz a kable that atteces into your sling bag to a battery?
@@k.o.t.o.n. it's your call. I live in a PAL region so work in 25 and 50p anyway, so I get to shoot RAW on the R5C without external power!
@@andytrace Stick with still cameras with video options. Those are for you. This is a camera in the cinema line which obviously isnt you.
As always a solid review! I’m testing the r5C this week and will record my thoughts. All the best.
00:24 - 1st pre-review statement "it does not overheat" - 2022 sign of the times😄
Great preview Gordon - thank you!
Thanks, I prefer a calm approach although it does draw fewer viewers than the clickbaity videos.
As I recall, they had the same WB settings. Note when the R5c is filming video, it's using a different cinema OS
Really great review Gordon, especially the chart work highlighting the corner cutting going on in the R5 model. I was wondering are you able/allowed to upload some of the test footage so folks can see how the likes of Canon's RAW Lite and the XAVC codecs handle in post?
Not yet as it was a pre-production sample.
so... now with 1.6 on the r5 - how would you compare the two?
I do wonder if they'll update the R5 though for vehicule auto focus since they implemented it into the R5C and it's only a software thing anyway..
for stills shooter the R5 is top 3 best cameras in the world. The bulkiness of the R5c will annoy you.
Unfortunately rolling shutter is a spec thats hard wired into the sensor right at the beginning when design was in progress. No amount of processing power can speed it past the limits.
yeah, I understand why IBIS was removed for videographers BUT it is highly beneficial for stills.
Great job as always Gordon. Is the 4K 120 slo-mo still line-skipped or has the quality improved from the R5?
I did test 4k 120, but my results looked a bit worse than expected so I took them out until I get a final production.
@@cameralabs A Canon rep on B&H's channel confirmed it's line-skipped so same as R5
@@scottw6960 yes, I'd expect it to be similar to or same as the R5 in this regard.

Glad to help!
Very good tests. Thankyou... I'm pretty convinced by this camera...
@Gordon Laing, Canon Europe also confirms that R5 has DPAF2 over DPAF1 on R5C and C70.. DPAF2 for stills, DPAF1 for video. Are the same between r5 and R5c R5c used the same AF as the R5 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF II) when in video mode and am VERY disappointed to find out that the R5c uses the same AF as the C70 (Dual Pixel CMOS AF with iTR AF X).
that makes sense judging from my casual AF tests so far. I'll delve into this more with a final model.
Great detailed review as usual Gordon. How is the autofocus with video? Similar to the R5?
No, sadly not, it appears to be slower and less featured. I want to test this properly in a follow-up video.
@@cameralabs Oh wow. May be the biggest drawback of all. Standing by for your tests. Thanks for the quick response.
Thanks for this. The one thing that makes this camera unsuitable for me is that you boot it up in video OR still. No switching quickly in the middle of action between video and still. Is that right?
I'm afraid so
15:03 - r5 4khq is sharper than r5c 4k25? is the r5c really oversampling from full width?
I noticed that also. If the R5c really has better regular 4k, 4k60 and 4k120 that would be the major selling point for me.
Hi Gordon, thanks for the great overview. I have a question please. Can you use a power bank on the R5C? If so what do you recommend Thanks, Cliff Colreavy
If it officially supports power delivery, you should be ok. I've only tried AC USB Power sources with it
Goodday Mr. Laing... Thank you for all your outstanding and honest reviews that I have read and seen... I hope I may ask you the following: do you remember if the Canon EOS R5C has the electronic level in the viewfinder/screen that the R5 has (in photo-mode...)?

No problem! I showed them to illustrate that it's no different from the R5, so you have to be careful!
Your impression is correct. Both have poor rolling shutter. This is because the high resolution sensor cannot be read out quickly enough. Canon's competition in the video arena tends to fit their cameras with lower resolution sensors that can be read out more quickly, so are more appropriate for video.
@@Trevellian Thank you both.
Gordon, excellent job as always. I have been following your R3 and R5C reviews closely. You're right, I noticed that too AND the white balance was set to the same Kelvin value on both and under controlled lighting, so I'm not sure why. I'll look into it, but not sure I'll find an answer.
Hi Gordon, which camera do you use for recording yourself, super clear. I think you are also an expert in light too.
Thanks! I use a Sony A6400 and e 24mm f1.8, all listed in the description
Amazing video! If you have the battery grip with two batteries installed does that allow you to record 8k 60p without any limitations?
good question!
That's a great question and the answer is I don't know but I will try and find out! You can record 8k 50p RAW LT under battery, but you'll need extra juice for 60p.

The digital IS is only for video, not for stills. For stills, you're looking at lens IS only.
@@cameralabs thank you Gordon. That’s a bit disappointing
Great review Gordon, have you tried the Canon RF-EF ND converter on this or the R5? It'd be good to know whether there are any colour issues, otherwise looks like a good solution to the lack of ND's, if you're still using EF lenses.
I haven't tried the ND, only the polarising one but I'm guessing it'll be pretty good.
Thanks Gordon for providing a fantastic unbiased review. And thanks for being my " Safe space " for TH-cam camera reviews lol
You're welcome, i wish more would find me here!
Thanks again for the video, I have Q, does it have the same auto focus as the one in R5 with video? Thanks 🙏
No, the AF in video doesn't appear to be as good as the video AF on the R5, but I will test this properly in a follow-up.
@@cameralabs I appreciate it, thanks 🙏
Such a significant and systematic review, thanks Gordon
Hi Gordon, Thanks for the detailed review. I don't have 8K in my mind. Is it a good idea to go with R5 If I'm shooting only up to 4k60 and occasional 4k120? Will the R5 overheat shooting 20-25 mins 4K60fps videos?
Sadly yes the R5 will overheat at 4k 60. The only modes where it didn't overheat for me were 4k up to 30p in non-HQ mode and any 1080. If you want a super-reliable 4k camera, I'd consider the Sony A7S III or Lumix S1H.
@@cameralabs Thanks a lot. I appreciate it.
Thanks for the video. Will the R5 overheat only on continues 45min recordings only?, or can it withstand hours of clips 10 secs each without overheating. So torn between the 2 cameras.
@@vedder7373 please watch my R5 review for VIDEO as I discuss this.

Hey Gordon, very nice video, thanks to share it. Out of curiosity: if you use both optical IS and Digital Standard con R5C, do you get better or worse stabilization than Sony A7 IV with both IBIS and optical IS? Thanks
Impossible to tell without having them side by side under the same conditions.

(Ufine) right to watch it on tv without editing . I
tried my R5C in all tv watchable formats without editing but I couldn't get the same sharpness quality as R5? Please help me .
That must be the difference between the way the video is encoded or processed in the R5 system vs the R5c movie system. That's too deep a dive for me to do, sorry, but Canon may be able to help.
Hello Gordon,
is the optical IS and digital mode also active in photo mode? or only in video mode. Many Thanks
Digital IS is only for video
@@cameralabs Thank you for your quick response
Hi Gordon, I've watched all r5c reviews today but no one talks about dynamic range in video mode. Is it any better than R5 which is not very good compared to similarly priced cameras from other brands?
It's essentially the same as the R5 given the same type of file, such as C-Log 3. But i don't do formal DR tests so I can't give an exact figure on it.
Curious about battery life and battery type. Is it the same battery as the R5? And how long did it last shooting all out?
Yep, same battery. I did some battery tests in the overheating section.
Great review! Does it do dual record on video? Also does it do 240p in HD?
Yes and no
How did you find the handling/ fit in hand with the added fan for a photographer ? I do 50/50 still and video and the fans looks big in the hand.
It looks big, but actually isn't too bad, barely any heavier and the grip is identical. It just looks big!
@@cameralabs Please, which zoom lens could I buy? I would like a 24-105mm or more.
@@cameralabs thanks for the awesome review. Really exciting camera (and very unlike Canon imo)!
Hallo gordon, I have questions regarding battery life of r5c. Can you please tell me 1080p battery life. Thank you
Sorry, I only tested the battery for 4k
@@cameralabs thank you so much for your reply.
Another stellar review, Gordon!
For photography use mainly with some video jobs from time to time, would you opt for the new c model or is the r5 is a better choice.
definitely original R5
@@cameralabs so the C lacks some of the prowesses the R5 has?
@@rodriguezahr I find IBIS really useful for photography, so I'd miss it on the r5C. Also, the video AF is better on the R5, so even though it can't film for as long, I'd personally be able to exploit the better video AF over the longer recording times. Plus I can switch between photo and video faster on the r5.
@@cameralabs thanks for your valuable input. It’s the R5 for me then.
Great review Gordon, thank's for sharing this super speedy real life experience 🙂
It's easy to see how they are concentrating / targetting the YT/SM vlog market .
Take a trek to Mach loop and film the Jets as they fly through ..
Why is micro HDMI a major problem?
@@vitaminb4869 It is very fragile. Just a little pressure on it can break the connector in the camera or on the cable. For most pro videographers this is a huge problem.
@@mrmdpgh the R5C comes with a cable protector, so this should solve that issue.
Solid review, much appreciated. I wonder when Canon will let go of 720p. Maybe it’ll be cool next year… like shooting film
Bring back QVGA!
@@NathanPhillipsPhoto that could be a good one to feedback...

I'm curious too. I live in a cooler climate so we'll have to wait for people in warmer places to test it.
No IBIS, No full size HDMI. I guess they will keep it for Canon R1 with a higher price (which is their flagship camera)
It’s part of the Canon marketing.
Great review Gordon. Thank you.
Does this version camera allow your 4K video to be H.264 codec instead of the R5's H.265?
The R5 only uses H.265 for 10 bit log footage. It's H.264 for non-log.
@@cameralabs oh! Good to know.
Is that the same situation with the 1D Mark III?
@@Saugerdees I can't remember, but that's generally how Canon does it.
Does the camera turn off for a split second when switching from photo to video and vice versa?
Yes, I show it in the video. it's a few seconds.

Argh! I don't know and it's already been taken back to Canon-land!
You always do the best reviews and always answer all of my questions! Cheers to you Bro from Atlanta, GA. I have an R5 and just bought an Atomos to fix some of the my issues. But false color in camera and no more line skipped 4k and 4k60 is intriguing.

Thanks! I decided to film my b-roll with a bright studio light against a plain background so I could stop-down the lens and not worry about having a nice blurred background!
…so, how about that infamous Canon codec? What are these file sizes looking like at the end of their duration?
Weeeell, for the clips where I filled an empty card, you can work out the file size. I wasn't going to delve into bit rates here, those are all specs you can get from the website.
Great detailed review with samples.
Noticed that the camera shoots only 10 bit still images compared to 14 bit of R5? At least that is what the spec of B&H is telling. Is that true? If it is, no hybrid shooters will buy this camera at all. A massive lose of dynamic range will definitely be visible! Or was that just a mistake from B&H!
I suspect it was a mistake. But we can confirm when final models arrive.
Do any on the enhanced stabilization modes work in 8k 24p and 8k 60p in RAW? Thanks!
Not sure, but I don't think so
Do you have to 'commit' to either video or photos with the on/off switch?
Yes you do.
Probably not, but hopefully. lol 👍😂
A couple questions - 1) the R5c's 8K RAW out, that isn't the same ProRES Raw as found in the R5 is it?
@james lmk if you sell the A7S3!
My question is what advantages does the R5c have over an R5 with an Atomos V?
I hope to go into more detail about this in a future video.
Does anyone know if it works with the R5 battery grip? And will raw then run on two batteries or do you still need external power?
Yes it will work with the R5 battery grip. Not sure if that will support RAW 60p 8k though, I'll check.
It seems like the fan could be useful for long exposure astro photography, often high ISO images can be cleaned up by cooling the sensor. I wonder if the R5C could be used to achieve this....?
Apparently not. I have heard the fan only works in video mode.
@@kevinbouley1075 yeah at the moment, but a firmware update could easily change that.
@@kevinbouley1075 true, it currently only works in video mode, but they could enable it as an option for photo mode if they like.
I've wondered that too - not sure it's cool enough to make a difference for astro, but I'll investigate...
@@cameralabs awesome! Very much looking forward to your findings!!! Thanks for the work you do!
Is the 4k 120fps only in full sensor or also in super 35 crop?
Good question and I'm not sure... I think only full frame, but you'd need to check Canon's specs.
@@cameralabs I agree with you bro & thanks for checking it out for me appreciate it.

Another very good review. I have the R5, which I really like, but I don’t care for video, so it suits me well. I think the R5C offers great value if you want both stills and video in one compact camera.
I’m disappointed at the lack of IBIS though
@@philfyphil judging by the footage showing the combination of the digital and lens stabilisation it looked to give good results. And I guess those using video regularly would use a gimbal. @@cameralabs that is true. I would honestly prefer backup recording and ibis but this does seem like a good studio cam for those with canon lenses. I just wish they kept ibis and allowed dual raw recording onto two CF cards.

@@cameralabs did you shoot 4K60 and 120 without external power?
sure, but this one is a video-first camera, so that's why the tests are video focused.
@@cameralabs great review as always Gordon
