    Brian Wilson got the unique Beach Boys sound by layering the music. Sort of like a wall of sound. He wrote and produced his songs himself. Genius

    • @brianwalendy3735
      @brianwalendy3735 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The wall of sound, and the albums using that technique, were produced by Phil Spector. Wilson adopted the technique to an extent himself, but Phil was the main guy behind that sound.
      I'm not trying to diminish your take on Brian, as he deserves all the credit in the world for his art and sound.

    As a teenager near Chicago, never having been to California, I was still aware of the surf scene from fellow army brats who had been there. When this song came out we all dug it along with Motown, Jazz, Beatles, Soul, Byrds, Stones, Folk and everything else we heard on our transistor radios. We bought the 45's or LP's. Some top 40 stuff was c--p, but most was great and it evolved every week; new and better tunes all the time. The Beach Boys had a huge hit with this tune then because it sounded so cool, had great harmonies and arrangement and was a reassuring, mellow message when times were tough; it still is. It's a beautiful love song. Plus it had that California mystique of sun, beach, pretty girls and coolness. This was new, fresh and definitely very appealing. Greasy tough guys were out; hip, intelligent, compassionate people were cool; we were hippies before hippies. This was a pivotal tune for us. Brian Wilson is a genius.

    Born 1952 and raised in Southern California ... on the beach! THIS sound WAS my adolescence. First album I ever bought was the Beach Boys. But I also grew up with the Black girl groups and loved them too. Never understood later on why they were marginalized when they recorded song after great song telling the universal stories of all girls. Musically, It was a GREAT time to be alive! I was fortunate in my parents who also had interesting and eclectic tastes. Loved my Sachmo, Duke and Ella too ... because of my dad. Before WWII, when he enlisted in the Corps, as a young man growing up in LA he had parked cars at a jazz club there. He saw all the BIG names come through and passed along his love for that sound to his 3 kids. I think It was passed along in our DNA.

    "Don't worry baby," was arguably one of the most influential songs in music history. Brian Wilson claimed he wrote this song for Ronnie and the Ronettes after hearing "Be my baby" gis all time favorite song. He submitted ""Don't worry baby" to Phil Spector who declined using it. So, the Beach Boys recorded it using a multi-track over dub set up to mimic Spector's wall of sound using a steady "chub-chun" beat (heard in both songs) to tie it all together. That in turn would be used by Roger McGuinn of the Byrds in several tracks including those for Bob Dylan's "Mr Tambourine Man."

    As it is now that when someone describes a song as a Motown, people immediately know what to expect.
    The same for Californians who grew up on "CalIfornia Sound of Surf Music" YES, look it up. It's an actual description of a specific genre of music.
    I was blessed to grow up with the "California Sound," and my neighbors the Beach Boys. 🌊🌴🏄🏾...
    I'm 11-18 yrs, surfing in OC, California & North Shore beaches, In our home-made bikinis, Slaps, the smell of coco butter & surf wax, on Main St at HB. Epi-center Surf City... All surf shops, we'd hit Jack's Surf Center for lunch, avacado & sprouts on wheatberry sandwhich with Guava bananas smoothies & strips, then grab our wetsuits & boards, hit southside with transistor radio playing surf music... Smell of salt air, suntan lotion. Warthm of the sun, cooled us, as we'd run with our boards into the surf. Loud surf music blarring of the lifeguard tower on the pier & lifeguard stands. That's what loving memories this song brings me too. 🥰🤙
    All surf groups. Jan & Dean, Honk, Ventures, Dick Dale & Del Tones (their great instrumentals) mostly their song "Misirlou" ended up being the lead sound tract for the movie Pulp Fiction 50 yrs later!
    Ty, please listen to more of the original "Surf Music."
    Along with Beach Boys, were bands of the 60's who played purely Instrumentals for surfer's, of which. Here are a few you must hear! 1)The Surfaries "WIPEOUT," or 2) The Chantsays..."PIPELINE," Do the video from" Reality Shifts)with little girl surfing for Pipeline Pretty Please.. all were used in best Surf flicks... "Endless Summer," "Pacific Vibrations," "5 Summer Stories..." and many others... music all were influenced by The Beach Boys, Dick Dale & Del Tones "Mirsirlou"
    But these instrumentals I've given you, I'm sure you recognized from movies that were made many years later. The great director producer Quentin Tarantino stated the surf sound of the 60's 70's, are pure magic. "I want to use them in all my films." And he, and many other film makers to this day, still do! Sorry for typing mistakes. Hard for me to post.

      Ty if you ever do play a few for me... Pipeline, the Chants us "Reality's channel. Thanks. God Lord willing, I'll be able to join in!!!!! 🙏 🌊🏄🏾 FYI... It's only instrumentals.... I've bet you herd it in a movie!
      Also Dick Dale & The Del Tones "Mirsirlou". Was intro song for Pulp Fiction
      Or
      Surf Riders "The Lively Ones" also in Pulp Fiction.. The album cover I believe it on the Surf Riders channel.

    This is song is one of my top 10. I had a dysfunctional childhood and I would hold onto whatever made me feel good or special. I believe the first time I heard this song I was riding in a car 8 or 9 years old it was either Spring or Summer. I was born in 68 and this song came out in 64. I'm in live with a song before my time. ♥️

    I have this 45. Was young girl n loved them along w many other great bands then. They were antithesis of the “British Invasion”. They were 2 brothers, cousin n friend. It was called the “ California Sound”. Few others came out of that as well- Jan n Dean, Mamas n Papas etc. I have their first album. I was living in suburb of Chicago at that time n it gave me those early dreams of California n warm weather year round. Great song. They were also embraced as being “ wholesome” as opposed to Stones n Kinks.

    When Brian got sick and had to leave the group for several months, they asked Glen Campbell to be his stand-in. He was familiar with the music because, as a session musician, he'd played on their records. What he wasn't ready for was singing those high parts while playing bass. He likened it to patting your head while rubbing your stomach. :)

    • @Mona.555
      @Mona.555 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glen Campbell wasn’t just any session musician. He was part of the “Wrecking Crew”.

      Of course, Glen for guitar. He’s one of the best.

    • @Squee_Dow
      @Squee_Dow 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I love to hear the members of the Wrecking Crew tell their stories of the those days. Glen has a hilarious story about the time he played on Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night." Glen was completely in awe of being in the presence of such a megastar, and because Glen didn't read music, he spent a lot of time looking admirably at Frank during the session. When Frank would turn to find Glen looking at him, Glen would pivot to the sheet music and pretend to be reading it. After the session, Frank asked someone in the booth who was the [homosexual] (not the word Frank used) that kept staring at him! :D
      All the others, if I remember correctly, could read music. Glen's incredible success puts him ahead of the others in my view since his playing was based on an inner, God-given aptitude that he translated into an amazing career. So many tend to pigeonhole him as a country music entertainer (which would have been fine with me), but he was so much more than that. All I can say is thank God for TH-cam because it's such a wonderful resource for discovering his vast talent.
      BTW, did you know that Hal Blaine recently passed?

    You're so right- NOBODY sounds like them. There is a beautiful song by Linda Ronstadt called "Adios" where the Beach Boys do the backing vocals and it is UNmistakeable. About my reaction, I'm a baby boomer so it's so sentimental to me. I'm a singer and musician so, I've studied Brian Wilson's work, (he is the writer and arranger), and his songs are amazingly beautiful and sweet. The video is just amazing- look how they don't know how to move or stand- stiff as can be! It actually brought tears to my eyes, with the memories. I'm a soft heart for things like this. I'm so glad you chose it to listen to! Brian was singing the lead on this with that angelic high voice- his brother Carl also had a voice like him. Right now, most of what you hear, if anything on the radio is Brian's really poppy tunes sung my Mike Love. But if you ever want to dig in, finding the songs that Brian and Carl can really be a joy. Surf's up is an amazing one with Carl and Brian double tracked, In my Room, The Warmth of the Sun and Carolyne No.. OK, I'll stop reminiscing on your channel! Thanks for the video. You're adorable and smart.

    2 of my sisters and their spouses took me,to see the Beach Boys at the Ionia Free Fair. It was my very first concert ever. Mike Love and Al Jardine and Brian Wilson were the only original members still in the group. Al Jardine's son was playing percussion. Apparently I have a thing for drummers and lead singers. For a while John Stamos played drums for them. It was the coolest concert ever. They threw Beach Balls out into the crowd, it was a great time.
    Brian Wilson was the major song writer for the group, but he also had his problems with mental health. The Wilson brothers had an abusive father. Their brother Dennis died in a drowning accident, from hypothermia.
    Anyway nothing can compare to the Beach Boys.
