      @DeEnna Matthews Freddie was unparalleled. And my main vocal heroes (I am a metal singer and guitarist) are Ronnie James Dio, Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford, with honorable shout-outs to Robert Plant and Udo Dirkschneider (original singer in the German heavy metal band Accept, now in his own band).
      But... I would listen to Freddie Mercury any time. He's a true showman as well as possessed of a potent vocal weapon. He knew how to dominate the stage and control the audience, and he was pitch perfect. A consummate entertainer who gave his all. His last song, The Show Must Go On, brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it. There's no self-pity from a dying man, no pathos, just determination and... well, The Force.
      Someone expresses doubt over the emaciated Freddie being able to manage the difficult vocals. Freddie grabs a bottle of vodka, necks a goodly amount and says, "I'll fucking do it, darling!" And then he does; wow, how he does it. A professional to the end. Perpetuity loves you, Freddie Mercury!

    Hey sweetheart I am the 75 year old grandma, I just discovered your reaction video's tonight, and shall continue to watch you, how refreshing to hear a young person express himself with out using profanity, thank you so much for that. This song is one of the greatest Rock Opera's ever written. Freddy Mercury was one of the greatest front men in rock history, He died in 1991 of Aids, and the world lost a great entertainer. The songs changing moods, and beats, etc are like acts of a play, telling a story. This was His coming out song they say, he talks of killing a man in the song and is telling his mother, He came out as a gay man, but I think the world already knew that. Anyway all songs by Queen are wonderful, and if you listen to them you will realize that you know many of them, they are very popular in the movies. May God keep you safe in his loving arms, in Jesus name.

      Hi, Carla.... love that you wrote this, but not technically a “rock opera” even though it has an operatic part (during which Queen would walk off the stage during live presentations, BTW). A true rock opera is Tommy, or Aqualung or Quadrophenia or The Wall. (Each song is part of the whole concept of the album which in its entirety tells a story).
      Cheers, God bless you too, and rock on, Carla!,

    Brian May, the lead guitarist, was studying for his PhD degree in astro-physics, and in particular, light reflected interplanetary dust in the plane of the solar system, when Queen hit it big. He put it off for thirty-three years and in August of 2007 his dissertation, A Survey of Radial Velocities in the Zodiacal Dust Cloud, was accepted and approved in The following September at the Imperial College. So, technically, he is Dr. Brian May PhD. In addition he has produced two peer-reviewed research papers. He also is co-author of Bang! - The Complete History of the Universe and Cosmic Tourist. He's a real smart feller, that one, eh!

    Oh man, if you are new to Queen you have SOOOOOOO much to watch. Freddie Mercury is highly regarded as one of the best if not THE best vocalist in rock history. They were known as being one of the top live bands of all time and had so many wonderful hits (many of which you've probably heard even if you didn't know it was Queen).
    Also there's an upcoming movie about Queen called Bohemian Rhapsody (you should do a video of you reacting to the trailer). It comes out in Nov, can't wait to see it.
    Some of their biggest songs you've probably heard many of them:
    We Will Rock You
    We Are the Champions
    Another one Bites the Dust
    Somebody to Love
    Under Pressure (David Bowie did the vocals along with Freddie on this, very memorable beat that was "stolen" by Vanilla Ice for his hit, Ice Ice Baby).
    Radio Ga Ga
    Crazy Little Thing Called Love
    Can't Stop me Now
    Killer Queen
    Fat Bottomed Girls
    You should give some of their live shows a listen to, Live Aid, Live at Wembley, some great live performances that show off how amazing they sounded live.

    • @inspirationworks8357
      @inspirationworks8357 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Freddie's incredible 4 octave range wasn't his only vocal feature that made him possibly THE GOAT when it comes to vocalizations. Science has proven that physically speaking, his voicebox modulated and recovered faster than the average voicebox.
      Also ! That incredibly fantastic 5 part harmony beginning sequence is ALL Freddie !
      The thing about our generation and genius -- we are so fortunate to have experienced and witnessed so much of it that we sometimes don't realize just how brilliant a star is until it has faded from view.
      (This was meant as a rock opera. Queen was brilliant !)
      Namaste

      Minor correction. "Don't Stop Me Now." Live Aid is 24 minutes where you and the arena forget 20* other bands also played before and after. U2 actually came close to stealing the whole crowd as well.
      I haven't seen it in at least a decade but I remember Queen in Rio being amazing, but every live show in Rio turns out amazing. (See the crowd sing an instrumental in Rush "YYZ" Live in Rio.)

    I have taught high school for 29 years. It’s hard to believe that last year’s seniors were born around the time of 9/11! Many kids today were not raised on top 40’s stations. They listen to specific genres. That’s an oxymoron by the way. Some kids have never watched MTV or BET. Which is mostly reality shows now anyway! They download their own playlist on to their phones. They don’t know what a rotary phone or cassette tape is! Heck! Even CDs are old school now! The 70’s are light years away to them my friends! I love what is happening now. I love to hear Old Town on Country stations and I love seeing black kids discovering Queen! The only icon that all kids still knows is Elvis...Thank God! They are a little surprised when I tell them that Elvis is Michael Jackson’s ex father in law though! And I am a Zep Freak, but my older brother by 10 years says, “I was busy building my career in the 70’s. But now that you’ve taken my son to one of his concerts, Page and Plant actually, I have to say that I really like him!” Ha ha! So kudos to people everywhere discovering different types of music!

    In my own mind, the song's three parts are: 1. a young poor man who takes a life and has to face justice("Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth"), 2. his struggle through the court system, facing the death sentence ("Let me go," "Beelzebub has a devil put aside, for me"), and 3. His anger and frustration inside as he is subsequently locked up in an inhumane prison system ("Just gotta get right outta here")... but your impression about Willy wonka's weird tunnel during the second part just fits in perfectly with my own impression about the song... the court systems can be an crazy ride. Tunnel to another world.

      Nora Willcutt - very possible! Apparently he never told Brian, Roger and/or John, what it was about, and they claim to still be in the dark about the lyrics.

    • @alking7655
      @alking7655 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @On a pale horse, @Nora Willcutt, @Modern Renaissance Man, In a perfect sense, all music is subjective and therefore, open to one's own interpretation.
      However, this is where Queen was experimenting with many different styles of arrangement and this one, in particular, is on the "A Night at The Opera" album. Hence, the glam rock/operatic arrangement.
      While never fully revealed, I link the lyrics to a scenario of what a gang war may have been like if performed as an opera.
      The lyrics describe two feuding sides and a situation where a dying man calls out for his mother. His justice, in my opinion, in which he questions which he is going to meet on the other side. Will it be "Beelzebub" ie. "The devil put aside for me" and will he be trapped, (purgatory) or get lucky and get a second chance in life?
      "Any way the wind blows."

  • @peterd440
    @peterd440 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    This song is legendary because when it first came out it was just so weird and original. It was recorded in five studios with Mercury and Taylor singing over and over again for days on end. The opening part and the crazy operatic section were impossible to perform live because the first is Mercury singing with himself doing the harmonies and the second is an insane amount of recordings over the top of each other. Even for Queen who were probably the best live band ever doing it live was impossible so they settled on a formula of missing out the first part, doing the next part, walking off stage for the operatic part while the record played and performing the last two parts. They never even tried faking it.

Because in today’s era most music is trash, it’s just an industry to make money, not like in the old days we’re music was your soul, it drained your talent, and it will always live.

      definition of "Bismillah" is "in the name of Allah" "Scaramouch" means "a stock character that appears as a boastful coward" "fandango"- Spanish dance, "Figaro" was a scheming Spanish barber who appears as a character in eighteenth-century French plays "magnifico"- a very powerful, important or eminent person.....I really think this song was about his coming out...."Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me"...."just killed a man, put a gun against his head pulled my trigger now he's dead"...."life had just begun"....was his relationship with Mary which was now over he killed that side of him, 'mama"...this is the confessional, talking to his family..."but now I've gone and thrown it all away" if I am on the right track ....this really is a masterpiece written very cleverly...

    Believe it or not, and this coming from a huge queen fan most her life and just learned this, the very beginning where it shows all the band members singing, is actually ALL Freddie through 5 different sound tracks, he is harmonizing with himself....blew my mind. People say, yeah singers are doing that all the time now. YES...but that's NOW, they didn't have the same auto tunes or things like that in 1975, this is pretty much raw and all Freddy. The next harmonization though is all of them, when he is asking to be let go. There is a video on TH-cam called "The Secret Behind Freddie's Voice" It was pretty amazing to learn the "Magic behind Mercury" :) Glad you enjoyed it, Freddie will always be a legend vocally, and Brian on the guitar!

    You’ve probably heard some Queen songs and don’t know it. “We Are the Champions,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Another One Bites the Dust” are ones most people have likely heard.
    This video finds them in the very glam 70’s, hence the androgyny. And this song was about his struggle with his sexuality in terms of the costs to his personal life, having to give up his old self to embrace his truth.
    You know how people sometimes try to use faith and religion to pressure someone into denying something like being gay? And instead of making that person not gay, it makes them feel like they have to reject God in order to be themselves. Which is the opposite of God’s will as I understand Him, but that’s what happens when humans get all overzealous.
    Anyway that probably explains the beelzebub reference: man’s been told being gay is evil, but he’s gay and can’t not be, so he figures he’s evil, at least in somebody’s view, and he’s accepting that he’s not able to be what maybe his mother wants him to be, or to live the way he’s been told was right, but he can’t deny who he is.
    And he could sure sing his ass off.

      I'm sure he hasn't heard any of them even by accident.
      Have you seen his channel?
      He's been living under a rock or something like that. Not knowing Hotel California or The House of the Rising Sun is just wrong.

    About this losing sleep thing, I can only speak for myself, but I can imagine others would agree. For me, it makes me think of how divided many of us are by music. Or just divided, period. Imagine being back in high school, and how different things could've been had everyone appreciated the various forms of art and expression of this universal language called music. It excites me that "you get it" in hearing these inspirational artists, and how deep lyrics can be. So deep that some songs just reach in and touch your soul.
    The other reason is that, I get to take a trip down memory lane by hearing songs I havent listened to in a while. Lol. Your reaction is not much different from when I heard them for the first time. It's all universal, and its appreciated how much you enjoy it. I loved your reaction to the Opera segment btw. You looked like a child seeing Disneyland for the first time lol. Priceless.

    Queen, one of my all-time favorite bands, introduced us all to the genre 'rock opera'. They were all so talented. I cried all day long when I heard Freddie Mercury had died. I still love Brian May's guitar work. NO ONE sounds like Brian on the guitar.

      John Mullinex - huh? Color blind is when you see no color, just character. As per MLK.

    Nice reactions, your head scratching and eyebrow-raising and smiling are lovely to watch. I believe there is now a worldwide community of Queen fans getting enjoyment from watching folks experience Freddy and the boys for the first time. It's a bit like watching your kid when he first learns to ride a bike.

    I received tickets to see Queen for a Christmas gift around 1976 at the Long Beach, CA Civic Arena. I’ve never heard anything like Queen. They were fabulous. I’m 69 one of the great bands of the era.
