    This video explains how to spot the signs of whitespot parasite (also known as ick or ich), how to treat it and also how to prevent the parasite becoming a problem.
    Making sure your aquarium or pond is well filtered and not overstocked is the most basic way to help the fish stay healthy but feeding with quality food is also of high importance - especially in a tank as there will be no insects or other natural food finding their way into an aquarium as there are in a pond.
    For the best filter media click here: www.filterpro.co.uk
    95% of aquarium problems are filter related so it is the obvious place to start when making the aquatic environment as good as it can be for your fish.
    This video on filtration will help: • Filtration, Filtration...
    How to cure white spot / ich / ick is no great secret but if not done properly you can lose fish and if white spot is not treated it can cause many unnecessary fatalities.
    Once a problem is identified and a water test has confirmed that there are no elevated pollution levels causing the fish to be stressed / lethargic, a close inspection of the fish may reveal tiny salt grain sized white spots on the fins and body of fish. This video explains what to do in that situation and how to minimize the threat to your fish stock.
    If caught early, whitespot / ick is easily treated and should result in full recovery for all fish affected but every day which passes without treatment the chances of survival will reduce to the point of wipeout.

      Just got some Seachem Cupramine to try.........wanted to ask what water temperature would you have for fancy goldfish to speed up the parasite cycle..........many thanks

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The parasite finds it hard to live above 26 degrees C but if you raise it that much make sure there is a good amount of water movement / aeration as warmer water holds less oxygen than cooler water. Adding some aquarium salt will help too.

    +B Elliot I can't reply to your comment on my video for some reason which is a bummer. Glad you enjoyed the video. When fish have whitespot its always best to test the water to make sure that there are no underlying water quality problems and treat with the full course of treatment as per manufacturers instructions, raising the temperature to 26 degrees Centigrade to speed up the life cycle of the parasite. I generally wouldn't remove fish from the main tank unless they were knackered and being picked on by the other fish as the whole tank will need to be treated as you've found out. Sounds like you bought some dodgy fish or brought in some poor quality water when they came in.

    I added a little bit of aquarium salt and the white spotts were gone from my neon tetras after 2 days. They only had 1-3 spots each when i started medicating, seemed pretty easy to get rid of though.

    ***** It sounds like they could be tiny air bubbles if this happens after a water change and they come and go withing 15 minutes. Often during a water change the filter will draw in more air or spit the remaining water around harder as it drops into water. The fish are covered in a slime layer which can sometimes trap the tiny air bubbles giving the impression of loads of tiny spots. That's the most likely cause if they come and go like that.

    Yes, I would always personally use the tonic salts as that's what we have in the shop but I have heard of people using sea salt and also cooking salt, especially for koi as cooking salt is much cheaper for treating large volumes of water (koi ponds).

    As soon as you see a problem begin treating and assuming the water tests fine then the treatment should do its job. The white spots may even drop off in 1-2 days but treat until the end of the course as the parasite needs to be killed in every stage of the life cycle. If fish are having difficulty breathing ass some aquarium salt at manufacturers recommended dose and increase aeration.

    So even if I have a goldfish I should heat the water up to 28? I have a black moor that has a single white spot on it's head. Just noticed it today and did a 20% water change and scrubbed the sides of the tank and the decorations inside. I don't have a testing kit yet, but hopefully will soon.

    Thanks Keith. I'm pleased it's having the desired effect. As Richard says you should only add salt in low concentrations and I would advise only really as a preventative measure. I used it along with high temperature and garlic to treat a particularly difficult strain of W.S. on Barbs but they were under constant supervision and it was done over about 7 day from start to finish. There isn't enough space here to go into it in full detail but I'm in the process of writing it up.

    I have 2 corydoras and both seem to have ick. I have used the API Fungus Cure and both of their bodies look better without the cloudy white look. The retailer told me to feed them more frequently during this period. Is it advisable to do so as I am already feeding them twice a day?

    Thank you ever so much for this video, Pondguru. I found this while searching for a whitespot treatment video, and I got the Waterlife treatment and the Thera A+ food, I can happily say your recommendations are excellent, following a week of treatment and only a couple of days on this food, my fish are already looking even healthier and livelier than when I got them! My guppies are even showing up colours they never had before. Sound advice man.

    Never mix ordinary goldfish and fancies as they will bully them in a small tank. I'm assuming the water tests fine but if not take measures to sort that - most water problems start with poor filtration. As you've spread the fish out you will need to treat each tank separately to kill the parasite and follow manufacturers instructions for the full course even if you notice spots drop off after a couple of days as the parasite needs to be killed in every stage of life.

    Just wanted to know after putting in the treatment when do I change my water and how many times? And do I add more treatment after a small water change after I put the treatment already? Cause it says not to use more then once per week.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, if treated badly the strain can be very difficult to shift - it can often be lodged within the gills and impossible to spot once the boys spots have gone. Garlic does make a hell of a difference and I hear what you say about the shop chasing it from tank to tank. I see that regularly that;s why we're so obsessed by separate nets and filters for the tanks. Prevention is better (and cheaper) than cure.

    Some independent shops will have proper water conditions and separate filtration but too many go for centralised systems which does nothing for disease prevention but is much easier to maintain.

    Any views on the substrate in a tank that's previously been treated for whitespot? All of our plants haven't grown since the treatment, and there's a blueish haze near the glass similar to what an algae problem looks like.
    I'm thinking of getting some new substrate to replace the fluorite black sand with JBL proscape as a posed to going with the ADA aquasoil

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Charlie Unless it was really overdosed the treatment shouldn't hammer the plants but I suppose it depends what it was treated with. The haze could be cyanobacteria which can bloom after an upset tank system but I'm not sure that affects plant growth - may be best to ask someone who specialises in plants.

    Do you have a video on uv sterilizers? I wanted to know that if I used two 9watt uv sterilizers, in line on each of my eheim 2075 canister filters is it equivalent to using one 18watt on only one of my filters.....?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having the water pass over 2 x 9w UV in sequence would probably be a little more effective than one 18w unit as there would be more exposure time. I haven't done a video on UV as unless you have linked tanks in a system there really isn't a need for them for a single tank. Even with UV parasites will still survive no problem in the tank but it can reduce populations when they are in the free swimming stage.
      Most common problem is ich which is generally a response to stress from reduced water quality so ensuring that the water is good is the foundation of fish health. UV will not do any harm but it is not a magic bullet for parasites. Buying fish from reputable dealers (not the chain stores who sell from linked tanks with sick fish in) and having good filtration will prevent most problems associated wit aquariums. This video should help if you haven't seen it already. EXTERNAL FILTER SET UP, NITROGEN CYCLE AND WHAT HAPPENS IN A FILTER

    hi rich I have a tank that has never had any diseases,
    do you think I should keep feeding them the garlic food every so often as well as the chemicals being put in the tank?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends what chemicals you are putting in the tank but the occasional treatment with 'General Tonic' or similar will keep bacteria, fungus and parasite levels at a minimum.
      Fish need a varied diet to be healthy so the occasional feed with garlic food won't do them any harm at all.

    Fantastic video Richard full if great information.
    Iv a question on water change.
    I was lucky to spot the "white spot" early with only a few dots on my gold fishes fin so got water life protozin white spot and fungus that evening and added 20ml to my 200lt tank .
    I'm assuming I wont be changing the water till iv completely finished the treatment?
    Iv started treatment on Saturday last today is sunday and il add my next dose tomorrow monday ....there is 2 days of a break and the next dose is friday can I do a partial water change say on Thursday before I give the last dose on Friday???
    And also in regards to the ornaments/ artificial plants do they need to be removed and disinfected??
    I use a fluval 207 canister iv removed the carbon before treatment but is there any need to interfere with the filter media or sponges ??
    I'm sorry in advance for all the questions but I'm new to fish keeping and I'd like to keep them alive ...iv 2 common goldfish and 1 ryukin. ..the offender was a shubunkin from a store that I returned that's another story...
    I was on the fence about adding the tonic salt I bought some just to have handy but it seems you have nothing but positive towards the use if tonic salts.
    If it aids in the fishes recovery o could add the manufacturer recommended amount I can always stop when the ich is all cleared up.
    Many thanks if u made it to the end of a long comment.
    Regards
    Tom.

Currently treating ich in my tank, got some fish just over a week ago from the place I feel you meant in the video's (shared tank filtration, etc) and noticed a few days later that one of the Danio's had little white spots, so got to it. Using the Interpet anti-whitespot (first treatment was Monday), and removed the carbon filter. Also, thanks to the advice, started upping the tank temp tonight from 21C at 1C/hr until I get to about 26/27C.

    I believe one of my baby congo tetra has one spot on its apidose fin. The problem is that it is in a 150 gal tank so getting a treatment for that tank would be an insane spend. Since it is a contagious disease so I'd need to treat the whole tank, is buying a lot of medicine my only option?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some people will tell you to treat by raising temperature and only using salt but I'd say treat the whole tank if it is whitespot parasite as it is way cheaper to spend on treatment than replace fish if it gets out of control and starts killing them off through secondary infections. I have heard of whole tanks being taken down with this parasite but that should never happen when water conditions are good and treatment is done early.

      UV's aren't something I have used on an aquarium but any maker will do as long as the water is passing over the UV light it will kill bacteria and parasites. If you have done any work on your filter just leave UV off for a a week or so to ensure that the filter can get set back up with bacteria as the UV kills both good and bad bacteria.

    Very helpful video. I'm on my way to the store now. How many Molly fish can you put in a 10 gallon tank?

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hope you're not on your way to my store as it is now closed as I sold it on Friday. It will reopen early February.
      If you have a 45 litre tank you 'd normally allow 1cm of fish per litre so depending on what type of molly you are buying (and allowing for them to grow to adults) that should be easy enough to work out - remember to ask staff how big the fish will get to.

    Hi. 2 of my fish have died so taken the others out of the pond!! Would you suggest putting them back in pond to treat or leave them in containers for a week? Hope you can advise!! Thanks

    We african dwarf frogs in the tank. I believe not all white spot treatment can be used with them. Which one would you recommend? I have raised the temperature and will be adding aquarium salts also.

    Hi great video, just subbed! I’ve got guppies and neons, last night I noticed two of my neons had white spots on Finns, so today went out to buy king British ws3 and raised temp to 28 degrees because any higher my neons won’t cope, my question is will this medication kill off beneficial bacteria in my tank? And also is it ok for live Java plants I have?

    Yes, as directed from manufacturers instructions. May be worth testing the water too as whitespot tends to kill only if very advanced or fish is weakened.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could be anything as it has come from a centralised system of tanks. Flicking nd scraping is associated with parasites but ich will usually show as tiny spots and not one big one. If you treat with Protozin that will treat for loads of different types of parasites plus combat fungus too which may be the white mark on the fish.

    If you use a UV filter does that pretty much take care of keeping the aquarium parasite free?

    Hey PongGuru I have a big problem. I have a heavily planted aquarium with lots of tetras (about 30) and inverts(shrimp). I do not know how to treat it. I have always treated before this problem with seachem's paraguard or cupramine(copper sulfate) which worked perfectly but I only had some hardy cichlids. now that I have inverts and plants I am affraid of using those cures, salt or even putting the temperature to 30C. What would you suggest ???
    Thank you !

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using garlic based food (or even crushed garlic if fish are still feeding well) coupled with a rise in temperature (and increased aeration) may be the way to go. Search shrimp forums for safe treatments too - I'm sure there will be some and even if used at a reduced dose should help.

    Richard!!I've just started to notice a few spots!I've taken my apple snails out and turned the temp up.I have Corys and only waterlife to hand, says I can't use it with scaleless fish? What can I order to use????

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of the treatments are fine to use with scaleless fish (sometimes 1/2 dose). I can't remember a specific one as I haven't had the shop now for over 2 years but I think WS3 (King British) was safe to use with loaches etc.

    Help! My fancy goldfish (comet with a fantail). She is 10 years old and has begun to rub herself against the gravel and looks like she may have whitespot. However, I cannot see the spots as her scales are very pale. She has red spots/marks where she has been scratching against the gravel. She also has mad wizzy moments when she swims manically and must be due to the itching. Please could you recommend treatment? Maybe salt bath to heal her red spots and then meth blue to get rid of the parasite? Hope you can help? Dawn

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Meth blue tends to kill the filter bacteria and can make matters worse - first thing to do is test the water to make sure the problem is not water quality related. How does it test?
      A few details on tank and filter would help too before I advise on treatment.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Yes, take carbon out during treatment then add again after the course of treatment to mop up any residual treatment although water changes will remove it in time.

    Hello. May i ask - can my fish (hemigrammus erythrozonus) have ich & fin rot in same time? They just not look too well to my eye. And yet they dont scratch, didnt lose appetite & very bright in color. But their fins is turn (i bought them that way) & recently when I increased in tank temperature on 2 degrees to 26 few of them start to show lots of white spots... 1 has huge white bulb right on top its eye. So white spots not tiny like on pictures with ich kinda looks like they missing scales. I have them only 2 wees in brand new aquarium. What should I do? Also I have shrimps, 2 plecos & Polypterus senegalus cant see any spots or something wrong with their fins... So I cant classify what disease I have...

    • @RinaDasler
      @RinaDasler 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      And my water test shows low ammonia but pH is 7. I did 3 times 30% water change in 2 weeks I have this tank.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      RinaDasler Sounds like the water quality has affected the fish but the shrimps would have been the first to suffer if that was the case. Shrimps would usually be the last thing you put in (after 6-8 weeks) as they are badly affected by any ammonia. Plecs would normally go in after 4-6 weeks as many starve in new tanks. Could well be that the fish had a parasite but it may also be the polypterus trying to eat the tetras which has damaged them and left them open to fungus and bacteria so treating for that would be a priority. Sounds like it is a combination of very bad advice from wherever you got the fish from with regard to compatibility and too many fish in a new tank.

      i bought shrimps to feed polypterus but he doesnt eat them :( I didnt see him eating anything at all so it could be his attempts to swallow my tetras :) Right now I'm using in my aquarium Melafix with 1% melaleuka in it can it help? next step will be aquarium salt baths but I dont have any other tank to quarantine fish & to change 285l in main aquarium its quite a job. no sprare heater or filter either. I'm glad its not ich through :)

    Normally white spot would drop off in a couple of days if caught early enough but some can persist. Could maybe be tiny fungus patches?

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Velvet looks like a fine dusting of yellow tiny spots and can be seen in conjunction with slime thickening / opaque patches on the body of fish. Protozin will treat parasites living in slime so is great for those ailments as well as white spot.

    There are bound to be more than just Spectrum which has garlic but the Thera+ from Spectrum has a higher percentage of garlic than the rest of foods on the range. You can crush fresh garlic and mix with your existing food. When eaten by the fish it will have the same effect.
    I'm out of Thera+ but I do ship worldwide when I have it. The last lot went to Brazil to a guy who bought 6 of them. Should have it back on ebay in a couple of weeks.

    Hi, I Think in early stages of ich, fish are acting fine but have few specks what looks like salt. I heard can get rid of ich with heat, salt and daily water changes. Do you think I should try this method before adding medications? Worried also about staining everything in my tank blue from med and heard not so good for the fish.

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      If used at correct dosage it will not stain the ornaments etc. blue and is definitely more effective than the non-treatment method. Only effect from treatment should be removal of parasite but always follow manufacturers instructions.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are loads of treatments which turn the water blue. Mostly anti-parasite treatments with malachite in.
    With regard to the neons being OK with the other fish species, yes and yes.

    What would you suggest for goldfish and bn plecos? Heard plecos are difficult to treat. Got coldwater tank

    • @pondguru
      @pondguru  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Louise Kazzam Just the same stuff but always make sure to increase the temperature as that speeds up the life cycle of the parasite allowing all sages to be killed quicker. Salt definitely helps too.

  • @pondguru
    @pondguru  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Catching it early is key to survival rate but if they are treated properly, the temp is turned up and there is plenty of aeration they still should stand a decent chance of pulling round.
