    When you see ick/white spots on your fish, immediately turn up the heat to 87/88F(yes the fish, plants, snails and shrimp will be fine) add no meds. Wait 3-5 days, your ick will have left the fish. Once there are no visible signs of the ick, turn the temp down to 84F, then wait 5 days, the ick parasite will die after 4 days if not attached to a host. Then you can switch down to 80/82F and leave it there forever. No need for water changes if you have a heavily planted tank. Simple, cheers 👍

    I did this in the empty tank I cranked it up to the max temperature my heater could handle the ich didn’t last a chance in my hands... and neither the heater

    I have used heat and salt for decades - works great! 1 tsp/gal and 86 degrees minimum - emphasis on minimum. The temperature at no time can drop below 86 degrees. Heat and salt are easier for most fish to deal with than meds. Formalin/malachite green work too, just know you have options.

      Drew Meier I was thinking that- my heater is preset to 78 degrees. I have a 10 gal tank with 6 guppies and a betta fish with 3 ghost shrimp as critters to clean up the bottom. I'm too afraid to use that copper stuff. Been wondering if aquarium salt works..

      since I have both legends in the same description.... I want to ask both of you a ick question. I just bought 3 tetras schools (6-7 per school), 1 loach, 2 miniature stingray plecos.i noticed my brass tetras had ick spots 24 hours after purchase. I immediately bought bought ick medicine and decide to treat de main tank(35gallon)as well as keeping my temperature at 82-85 degrees. it's been over 3 days now and I just notice other tetras are now also carrying ick.... I am beyond fustrated at this point because the tank is also heavily planted with co2. 4 days so far since I notice spots, what should I do it this point?

    OK. I just experienced ICH as a newcomer to fish keeping hobby. I searched TH-cam videos and forums. There are lots of options, some conflicting info, and variables so, here is a fresh experience as newcomer and may help you if you are freaking out about ICH.
    I have a planted tanked and I had just added up to 10 fish to it over a couple weeks. My son's fish, "Bubbles" was a new transfer because his smaller tank (13 gallon) spiked. The nitrite got him. He already cried over one that had died so I thought I would quickly replace him. That is how I got ICH in my 20L.
    At first I didn't know what I was seeing. It was only a few dots on the body right next to his back tail. Guy at the shop said it would be evenly dispersed over his body. That was false! It has to start somewhere! That lead to wrong and late diagnosis so, it seemed to go away w/ a fungal treatment (the result of misdiagnosis). That was the beginning of the cycle and when it came back he had it with vengence. The other fish seemed OK. But quickly developed a spot here and there.
    I freaked because I have a lot of plants and a lot of fish I just got. Fish that are more highly susceptible to ICH and cost more than Bubbles. Here is what I did.
    Treated with light amount of salt to boost fish immunity.
    Increased temp to 86 degrees F. Note. I checked out all my fish and what they can handle. This temp was only out of params for Bubbles.
    I began feeding them food with garlic in it (antibiotic).
    I also immediately began dosing with Paraguard. It evaporates over 24 hour period and I had seen in forums where a guy was fighting a tough strain w/ it to no avail and did this. They didn't follow up with how it worked so pay attention.
    I dosed once in the morning when I woke up for the day and at night before I went to sleep. Two caps diluted into a bottle of tank water. It did not turn the tank colors or stain anything.
    I did this for about 3 - 4 days. Bubbles looked like he just kept all those cists. I wasn't sure how 86 degrees impacted the life cycle so I decided to dial it down to about 84. Bubbles was dead by the next morning and everyone munched his eyeballs. The other fish looked good and no cists. I didn't see anything on Bubbles body either. Given this experience I recommend keeping it between 82 - 84 degrees like a lot of advice out there. No need to go overboard.
    I have dosed for two more days and I do not see any ICH. I also lowered the temp to about 82 degrees. I will maintain the 82 degrees and steady dosing up to 10 days total before I stop. That will put me at about 6 days of dosing past the point of not seeing ICH anymore.
    I think 86 degrees stopped the life cycle completely but didn't kill them. Like a holding pattern. Not sure. Dialing it down resulted in a continued lifecycle which is needed if you want to kill them with the medication obviously. The very high temp also probably added to Bubbles already weakened immune system. The final change in temp or the cists coming off or both was too much for him.
    In the future I will quarantine (I am prepared now with a couple levels of quarantine). But if ICH occurs here is what I will do:
    Begin Paraguard treatment at first sign of ICH.
    Treat water lightly with salt to boost immune but not hurt plants.
    Dial temp up to 82 degrees (maybe 1 point over but not under) to be easy on fish immune systems. Hold it here the entire time to reduce changes to environment.
    Feed fish pellets with garlic (antibiotics).
    Continue double dosing (morning and night) 6 days past no sign of ICH.
    Note - I still have a couple days to go under current treatment. But my fish haven't had ICH for days and the more susceptible fish survived! Only Bubbles 2 - the carrier died. Very happy with the outcome.
    This treatment would be good for a more heat resistant strain or where your heater cannot bring your tank beyond 86 degrees.
    Interested in more experienced thoughts on my experience. Especially why things went into holding pattern (seemingly) at 86'.

    Mike thanks for another great video. Quick question, what water did you use for the quarantine tank? You said just an air stone. Is the process quick enough that you don't have to worry about ammonia or cycling problems. I'm getting ready to set up a quarantine tank myself.

    • @AQUAPROS
      @AQUAPROS  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I used new tap water (de-chored it) brought it to temp and just added the fish. I didnt have a cycled filter to throw on it or else I probably would have. I knew I would be changing water regularly and I just dont feel like filtering it sometimes BUT adding a ready to go filter will make your life easier especially if your putting lots of fish into a small tank.

    Off topic question, but what do you use for CO2 dissolution?

    • @AQUAPROS
      @AQUAPROS  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +toycar foushboy There are a few ways I like to do it, every tank I have now is different... uhhh I go straight into a powerhead input (isnt great for the pump but if its cheap who cares) I also have an in-tank reactor pump on my 72 and im using a basic ceramic diffuser on the 90. Basically, I prefer methods that completely dissolves the co2 in the tank, there are multiple ways to do this but i personally like in tank reactors at the moment, in line reactors can slow down your filter a lot, just depends.

    • @toycarfoushboy
      @toycarfoushboy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah been trying to DIY an inline diffuser with like a impeller type concoction to smash bubbles into oblivion, but every type I've made slows my flow. As this point I too have been piping to either a filter intake or powerhead. We gotta figure a better way for this with minimal flow disruption.

    Is it possible that I leave healthy fish back in the main tank? Are they possible to become asymtomatic carrier? My hospital tank is quite small and I'm afraid that placing all of them inside would cause stress. Besides, I have 6 celestial pearl danios and I'm afraid that they can't tolerate high temp (so far they haven't shown any symptoms, only the platies do).

    Just treat the whole main tank with fish, plants and all, but raise temp and add aquarium salt! It works like a charm. The store bought meds kills fish and does more harm than good. If you can get pure formulin from a vet then that's fine, just treat the whole tank.

I know where it came from, the online fish store I ordered Neon Green Tetras from. DIdn't quaranteen them because they were so stressed and thin when they arrived, just acclimated and dumped them in. +Cheyann Eder If you remove the fish to a quarantine tank, treat that tank with medication. As long as there isnt any fish in your main tank, the parasite will have no host and will eventually die off in a week or so. No need to treat the main tank with medication (keep the temp around 85 F in the main tank during this period).

      Yes it can go into filter,depends what filter though,if it's carbon and fine filter sponge etc it should filter some of these lil suckers out the water.,but they will die in the filter if they get stuck if they can't get to the host.

    Hey. I have a 13 litre tank with one betta in it. A small 5W filter pump and 2 plastic plants. Its been 3 weeks since I bought the fish and just today I noticed 7-8 white spots all over its body and fins. I change 25-30% water every sunday and feed it once a day. Can you suggest how I should treat my betta? Also, my main tank is 81 litres with 5 african cichlids and 2 rainbow sharks. I follow the same water change routine as mentioned above in my main tank. What should I do to prevent Ich in it?

      angel martz First of all, you should get a quarantine tank to use in the future, you can use a sterilite or rubbermaid plastic bin as a quarantine, you can also treat your main tank using the aquarium salt and heat method, however if you have substrate or plants, I don't recommend it.

    I have lots of hardscape, plants, etc, so I want to treat the whole tank. I have amano shrimp in the tank; I'm not scared for the temprature, I've kept them at 35C (95F) with no issue, but I'm worried if the medicine will affect them. Also during treatment lights need to be off to force the parasite leave the fish, but can I keep my reds and mlues on for the plants?

    Hello, thank you for your video. I have 2 Goldfish and went to the store and bought two mollies and 2 Platies. I am new to fishes. after one week the small molly developed ICK. I ran to Petco and they gave me something called MICROBE-LIFT. That didn't do anything. The two mollies die and the platies too. I remove the Carbon Filter, I have the Bubbles, add API super ICK cure like the interactions said. The only thing I can do is to rise temperature to 84 Degrees . My heater came with the aquarium and it has a thermostat and the thermostat activated it self. Please how can I rise the temperature. I am trying to save my last two fishes. Thank you, I will appreciate if you can help me. This started on March 13 2022 and the situation is getting worst. I am very depressed.

    What about adding salt? I heard that some parasites and fungi are more sensitive to salt than the fish, so it can sometimes be used as a treatment option.

    I took all the stuff out of the tank! I was having an outbreak ! 😲 But with a pinch of salt in every gallon of water will relieve the itching and no stones in the tank will help to get rid of it. But it takes time and the fishes can look sick for a while . Water changing for 25%/ 30% everyday , have patience and God willing the fish is going to be fine . Peace !

    can I do this in my main tank as well?
    it also has fake vegetation and a few hiding places and rocks with gravel
    so if I could wouldn't it take a long time?

    • @crazee635
      @crazee635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should do this in your main tank anyway as the whole tank needs treating and not just the fish. From my experience the silicone edges may go blue but I have a blue background so this is not a issue! I've not had any rocks, wood or plastic decor go blue. In most tropical tanks the Ich treatment will need about 8 days at 25C. I use a treatment with malachite green and formaldehyde and it needs a repeat dose after four days to treat the whole ich cycle.

    I have a 5 gallon fish tank with lots of plants, shrimp and snail. I placed my betta male in there an then noticed that he was full of spots. He did not have ich in the morning when we transported him. We only arrived at home in the evening. So he was in the tank for like 5-10 minutes and then we quickly removed him. I also removed my guppys that was in the tank. So that tank was without fish for about 4 days now. But i don't have a heater for that tank so its really cold. About 19-20 degrees celcius. How long before the ich will die in such cold water?

    I adopted 2 id catfish with ich, it was in a 5 gal tank with 10 neon tetras 😦 when i adopted it i started treating it with aquarium salt. But it became worse they stop eating I started to think of different methods to save them i was so worried . So i used garlic i squish them and added a lil bit of water then remove the garlic . I mix the garlic juice to their tank. It worked for me the ich is lessen i change the water everyday and now theyre finally eating im still treating them until im sure that the ich is gone 😊 just sharing

    I'm trying the salt method, but since my fish are aquaponic fish, I don't have a heater, and can't afford one. Will it still work? Since its an outdoor system, the water does warm naturally, for for a few hours, then cools. I couldn't tell you the exact temp. Will they still heal?
