    Thanks for the video. I have a newly cycled 20 gallon tank with plants, hang on the back filter with ceramic ring filter media, and a separate sponge filter. No carbon. I have 4 neon tetras, 1 blue-eyed ancistrus, and 1 bladder snail that is hatching eggs everywhere. I run the light 8 hours a day for the plants. I agree that I should probably treat the whole tank rather than remove the fish and treat them in a quarantine tank.
    I noticed the White salt looking specs on the fins of 1 of the neons and the ancistrus last night. I am nervous about messing up the aquarium cycle. Do I need to remove the sponge filter, or the media rings? If I do, I’d be getting rid of good bacteria, so hopefully not.
    You mentioned in one of the comments that light impacts the efficacy of the drug. Where did you read that? I didn’t find that on the manufacturers website. Do you think I should cut back on the time that my lights are on each day during treatment? Ideally, I don’t want to lose any plants or fish.
    I attached a link to manufacturer instructions for anyone who wants to check it out.
    They stated: “ DO NOT OVERDOSE - this means you should calculate the actual amount of water in your tank by multiplying the length x width x height and dividing by 238 to get the true gallons. Please also deduct the amount of space consumed by substrate (gravel, sand, etc.) rock, decorations or other things which are displacing water.”
    I increased the temperature to 83.3° and per their instructions, I will first perform 1/3 volume water change before medicating. My whitish substrate will likely turn green, but that’s not a big deal. I appreciate your help.

      The rings and sponge can stay in, they want to remove the filter cartriges because they contain carbon which will remove the med before it can have an effect on the ich. Ich-X is made from a mix of formaldehyde and malachite green, malachite green has been noted to have an inactivation (oxidation) with exposure to light. Malachite Green treated systems should have their lights turned off due to the photo-degradation.

    Question for you, I have a 55 gallon. In this tank I have 1 blue acara, 1 leopard bush fish, 1 jack dempsy, 2 silver dollars, 2 blood parrots and two firemouths. None of these fish were recently added. It seems as of now that only the acara and the leopord fish have the white spots all over them. I cam currently running a cannister filter and a spongefilter ( for water agitation as well as filtering help). I know you should do a water change but do I need to clean out my whole filter prior to the first dose? It seems like both would cause a bacterial bloom on top of all that is going on. Also, do I NEED to have a quarantine tank or can I just treat the whole tank? -Sorry for the long question-

    • @TrafishAquatics

      Yes, You would dose the full amount. The reason is the main ingredients are light reactive, and their efficacy is greatly reduced when they contact light. So you would only need to do the 20% water change then add a full dosage.

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You want to retreat the full amount, there's a few different conjoining reasons as to why you want to do this. The first reason is ich treatments lose their efficacy with raised nitrates as well as large amounts of dissolved solids, this is why we change water before retreating to try and lower that to improve the efficacy of the ich treatment. another reason is the medication doesn't remain at its full strength for 24 hours because malachite green is a light sensitive and loses its ability to function properly when it comes in contact with light. Between these two reasons redosing every 24 hours in the full amount is the most effective way to dose these medications.

    And if I add seachem prime condicioner 24 hour before in the water will it be fine?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what method of fungus treatment you are using as each medication has different treatment periods, when using prime to dechlorinate the water it works almost instantly to remove any chlorine or Chloramine.

      So you're going to use Ich-X as a fungal treatment? Also according to Ich-X it says to avoid sulfinate or sulfoxylate-based water conditioners which is what Prime is according to the Seachem reps. So if that's the case you wouldn't want to use them at the same time.

      I use the full dose as half doses of medications lead to stronger pathogens when it doesn't work, That being said use it at your own risk when treating fry as different fry react differently to medications based on genetics and immune systems

It must take a lil for cyst to form or sumthin. It's really only effecting my fav old guy black widow...of course 😩 only see a spot on 1 guppy. Yes treated for 5 days and ich was no longer seen after the 4th day but treated an extra day to kill any spores that may have been in the substrate. It did however kill the anacharis plants as they are one of the extremely sensitive plants but that was also something i was testing for.

    • @ClassicCult

      Do plants carry ich aswell? I’m going to quarantine my tank but don’t want to damage my plants. Should I take the plants out and leave them in hot water for a couple days? And add them back to the tank once it’s quarantined?

    • @TrafishAquatics
      @TrafishAquatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, ich is a parasite that needs a host or it will die after 24hrs without one. The only reason my anacharis died is because anacharis is a simple celled plant and is sensitive to any changes (jungle val is the same way), if you have live plants besides those you should be good, but if you want to remove your plants you could if you want to, but hot water would kill them too
