How I Treat “Stress Ich” on My Fish

  • Despite quarantining my new powder blue dwarf gourami Unicron for 8 weeks, I noticed he had white spots soon after moving to the 20-gallon community tank. I thought it was ich, or white spot disease, and tried treating it with Ich-X medication followed by high concentrations of salt. However, the spots stayed exactly the same; they neither decreased nor increased in number or size.
I do not believe Unicron had “regular ich” caused by stress because it did not act like any case of ich I’ve ever encountered before. Regular ich tends to attack the thinnest membranes on the fish first, the number of spots multiplies quickly, and other fish often catch it as well. Instead, I believe it may have been “stress ich,” which is like stress acne for fish and is not contagious. Once I found the source of Unicron’s stress, I took care of it and the spots slowly disappeared one by one over the course of 2 months.
(Thank you to Cory from ‪@AquariumCoop‬ for his useful analogy of comparing ich to chicken pox and stress ich to stress acne!)

I have baught fish that developed ich and some that developed epistylis. I treat with Blueplanet fungus cure and Methylene blue and salt and put the temp up to 31. Kills it as soon as they drop off. But i leave it like that for 1 week to be safe. I have baught fish (yoyo loaches) with visible ich bcos I can treat it pretty easily. And I also felt bad for the fish cos they probably would of died if I didnt save them. Lol

A girl on TikTok explained how her cat stopped eating and not even the vets could understand why. It out the cat was throwing a tantrum and would rather starve then eat a different brand of cat food. The cat was back to normal after getting the brand she liked.

Always get it because most of my fish is transported to me (cant buy any local), mostly it goes away in few days with medicine. And they say aquariums and fish keeping is relaxing haha. Few more years and its time to get a job as a fish doctor.

My white Sailfin Molly occasionally chases his reflection in the back/left corner. I can move my Java Fern back there, but that would possibly lead to him chasing his reflection on the front/right corner of the tank, so I'll probably go out and buy a couple plants and cover the two back corners to keep him from chasing his reflection. He doesn't have any spots or signs of stress as far as I can tell, but it probably safer to fix the issue before symptoms arise.
Good tip/guide video for this issue. Simple and short, yet it gives you the exact details needed to resolve it.
Update: It's been a little over a month since I've had him and, since those plants have been added, he's hasn't been chasing his reflection anymore and swims around the tank with the ladies, pecking at plants, watching the snails move about, and just living life.

@PH Roof Cleaning North West Well, at least I know it wasn't the problem. If that was the case, my females Mollies would most likely be panicked and stressed as well. I didn't come back and update this comment though, and I probably should've done that so people know that his seeing his reflection was the issue, and that he's doing fine now. Do appreciate the comment though. Might help other people resolve the issue (if that's the issue they're having).

I love how people always do all this work for their fish, when I first got my cherry barbs I saw one had a single white dot near it’s gills, put it in a cup and made a tornado in the water with the thermometer that came with the tank and it came off, put him back in the tank and all my barbs are still alive!

Use fresh garlic for ick. It works like a charm and most the time the ick is gone within 24 hours. One clove per ten gallons of water cut up into bite sized chunks incase they want to eat it (this will help get rid of it faster). This is safe on ALL freshwater fish. I’m not sure about salt as I only fw fresh

Most of her decor is actually live aquarium plants, but if you're going the artificial route make sure you're using silk plants and not plastic ones, because plastic ones can have sharp edges that might tear their fins. Just try to avoid stuff that gets too sharp in general. Other than that, if it's labeled as aquarium decor, it's most likely safe :D

Ok fish question. Sadly the beta in the story passed on. Just curious what it was. My beta female was swimming fine. She was active and eat good. Then one morning I look in her tank. She had what look like hairs all over body. Possible fungus looking. She could not swim anymore or stay afloat. Passed on shortly after. Do you know what that could have been? Thanks so much for the information.

How do you tell the difference between true ich and stress ich? Do you have to try medication to know? I just got 6 pygmy corydoras and one of them is lethargic with clamped fins. I have yet to see the telltale white spots on him (though I noticed a lighter mark on his head, so I'll need to take a closer look at that to make sure it is just pigmentation and not a symptom of disease), but I've read that lethargy and clamped fins can be early signs of ich. I've thought about treating the quarantine tank with Mardel Quick Cure, but I'm worried that doing so will cause more harm than good if he is just having a stress reaction, since pygmy corydoras are more sensitive to medication. Any advice on how to handle this? I really don't want to lose him or any of the others, I already love them so much.

We payed $1200 to learn that my cat wasn’t drinking water because of moving stress and the water wasn’t in a specific cup (she still doesn’t drink from anything but her tea-cup)

How do you cure a Betta of a fungal/bacterial infection and cloudy eye? He's been like this for ages and the only thing I haven't tried was aquarium salt...
