The real reason for these collections including the extras is the 50 year copyright law. They have to release them in order to keep the rights and that includes the demos that had not been released. It’s great that the remaining fans get to hear stuff after all these years though. I’m a big fan of these collections but not a fan of the huge price! The McCartney archives included a hi res download - be nice if the others did the same.

Given how stunning the Beatles Mono vinyl set was -- doing an all-analogue mastering which, in my opinion, eclipses all other versions of those records (even the stereo ones) -- I continue to be so disappointed that no-one does a similarly purist, all-analogue remastering of Abbey Road, ATMP etc. in the original stereo mix. I do not buy the excuse (which you allude to) that "we cannot let the masters leave Abbey Road etc." Well it worked out fine for the Mono box...... If they are really that nervous they could even opt to do a vinyl pressing from hi-rez digital (like the Stones did for their Mono box, which sounded terrific, but NOT what Apple did for their Beatles stereo vinyl reissues, which were awful) - and I bet it would sound very good indeed. I haven't heard the remix yet, but from everything I've read, and from your perceptive comments, it sounds like a bit of an equivocation at best. Nevertheless I will probably buy the 8lp set because I would love to have those demos and outtakes, plus the book. Like you I love this album, Phil Spector-and-all, and dearly wish I could get an original (or close-to original) UK pressing for a sane price. It's clearly the best way to hear this album. Failing that, what is your opinion of the 2017 vinyl reissue (also in the Harrison vinyl box) - is it close enough to the original pressings to be ok, or would you just throw caution and sense to the wind and put down the cash for a clean UK original? Thanks again for a wonderful video, BTW.

If you have time jump over to Bobby Whitlock's UT page under header 'All things must be a joke.' It's an interesting rant. Apparently he hates the new mix overall. I mean he's mortified about it. He much prefers the original pressing. The one George personally handed to him.

I guess you know by now, Bobby Whitlock hates the new mixes (see his channel from yesterday). It's interesting, because he was there for all the sessions. Just finished listening to this whole video, Mazzy. I appreciate your comments and I think you've given us insights and a fair and balanced review. Being a child of the sixties, I grew up listening to the original mixes of all these anniversary albums and like you and many others got comfortable with them, listening over and over and over. I think, as you alluded to, people need to realize that Phil Spector was a solid hitmaker in the early to mid sixties and in high demand. He was considered by the industry and by The Beatles to be one of the most talented producers in the business. That tends to be a little overlooked these days. Also, people should realize that there was a period of years, when we were all hippies (or in my suburban teen case, a wannabe) when bands were noisy, raucous, 'let it all hang out,' and it was the thing to play those records really loud. Delaney and Bonnie, Leon, Derek and the Dominos, Joe Cocker, and so forth. I remember going to concerts and my ears would ring for days after, because it was balls to the wall loud and to some extent deafening. Anyway, I got the 3-CD ATMP set yesterday and will try to do an unbiased listen, but thanks again for your wonderful review. I trust your views, as well as Michael Fremer, Ron Beaudry, and Patrick the Vinyl Archivist. You guys know what you're talking about.

Some interesting food for thought. ATMP is a top 3 solo Beatles album for me. I've been looking forward to this release for a while. I can't really justify that uber set although I did consider it. I have been enjoying the remixes that come out from The Beatles and their solo releases. I don't think of them as replacements, but just an alternative experience. Like with Sgt Pepper or the white album, do I want to listen to the mono, the 2009 stereo remaster, the 2018 remix, or the vintage vinyl? Different things pop out on all of them. Like you I appreciate Phil's work on ATMP, but I think more than you I wanted to hear the less reverberated version to hear the individual parts better. Not that it becomes the definitive version, just a different experience. I haven't heard the new set yet. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the thoughtful discussion.

For me, most of The Beatles' remixes were an improvement over the originals - Hey Jude, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter and Get Back being exceptions. The remixes on All Things Must Pass are an improvement in sound. The dryer vocals take a little getting used to because of how we've heard them for 50 years, but it's more intimate and cleaner now.

  • @completeMonti
    @completeMonti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with most of the remarks here. Particularly regarding the remastering and remixing. Some random thoughts. My original experience with this was on cassette in 1970. Played it on a mono cassette player. I just wanted to put that out there because even in low fidelity, I loved this. When you are 13, you care more about the tunes than you can about the nuances of the recording and the instruments.
Now, of course, I really appreciate the clarity, although personally I was quite happy with the remaster of the original tracks in 2001. That said, when you listen to remaster of White Album and this latest ATMP, side by side, I hear much more clarity in White Album tracks. Maybe it's my ears.
But -- I love all the new tracks in this edition -- the demos with Ringo and Klaus are particularly good. It seems crazy much of this hasn't been heard (properly, outside bootlegs) in all this time. And I agree with the the presenter here on that topic. It all needed an official release.
When ATMP came out, no one could have imagined it would be the *pinnacle* of George's solo career, although I think you must also include Concert for Bangla Desh in that pinnacle. Having more than 4 hours of ATMP material is almost unreal at this point in my life. But I'm very grateful for it.
I also didn't know, until very recently, how very many of the songs on ATMP had been around for some time (some as far back as '66!) and summarily rejected by the Beatles. I knew about some, of course, and had heard some bootlegs, but the amount is rather astonishing.
Songs George worked on while still a Beatle include:
    Hear Me Lord
    Let It Down
    All things must pass
    Isn't it a Pity
    The Art of Dying
    Run of the Mill
    Behind That Locked Door
Not to mention Sour Milk Sea, Dehra Dun and several more, I believe.
And yes, I knew George had stockpiled a lot, and maybe even began to hold some things back in anticipation of his solo album. But wow, that's a lot. And when ATMP came out, I think absolutely everyone would have assumed this was all brand new music from George. I know i did.
But maybe that's fate. And maybe ATMP is the best argument for why the Beatles breakup needed to happen. However, I think it's interesting to consider what George's first proper solo album would have been like if all that material had been used up within the Beatles! We might have just had My Sweet Lord, Beware of Darkness, What is Life, and the Apple Jam!
    No, not really, but...
A few more thoughts. This latest edition would be *more* complete if they had included the extras that are included in the 2001 reissue. Argh! Most notably, the other version of "I Live For You," which George wasn't wild about, but I love should be in this new collection. Personally -- I think an excellent bonus would have been a few tracks from unreleased Concert for Bangla Desh tapes. "Hear Me Lord" was played live in the afternoon and didn't make the cut on the official release. I'd sure like to hear it. But I hope ALL that music from the Banga Desh concert is re-released with a nice big package of musical extras.
The music from ATMP is, after all, no less than musical history. And wow, does it stand the test of time.

Ultimately, I like what Paul Hicks and Dhani Harrison have done with All Things Must Pass. The moving forward of George’s voice and the bass in the mix work on most of the album’s cuts. Because of this, I find the 50th anniversary remix to be an improvement over the original.
Unfortunately, it's a long way from what it could have been...it's still compressed, there's still too much reverb mud, and it seems like no one cared about high frequency extension.

It's nice that you're rich Norman and that you can buy new vinyl. I've watched for a long time. Truthfully you do nothing for those of us who must build a collection from the dollar bin. It's not fun to go buy a new album, its also not feasible on $9k a year. The treasure hunt, nog knowing shat you'll come home with IS record collecting. Buying new by design is as well but not much of a challenge. You also never mention 78s which is a. constantly growing segment. Pro-ject, Rega, Clearaudio and Audio Technical all adding 3 speeds to turn tables. Regardless 78 is 78 only.
Just food for thought. Perhaps there was a time you were in the $1 bin. Carry on.

Totally brilliant review. I loved the scene setting with albums such as Delaney & Bonnie & friends ++. Like you say towards the end having lived with albums such as this for decades they do become embedded and remixes can be troubling to the ears - I was exactly same with the 2001 remix. Great point also about young people and streaming. Well done you.

I also hated Phil's production before. But after I heard the original vinyl one and CD made in 1988 I changed my mind. The version that most people can get in 21st century is the 2001 remastered CD version and it is so bad. And it make people think it's because of the wall of sound, which is not true. The new remix is even worse, unlistenable imo.

Totally agree about remixes Mazzy. In general, Im not a fan.
Im in the camp that sees it as dissecting the frog and in the process killing it. Just doesnt add any artistic betterment to the original.
Yes, one may hear a guitar there that they didnt hear before. But it wasnt suppose to be heard out front, artistically it was to accentuate and adorn the other guitar part to create magic. Same with back up vocals etc.
Also the demixing process, imo, is lame. I dont think the process and technology is up to snuff just yet. Maybe one day. Giles is waiting on Rubber Soul for that very reason. It just aint there.
I would love to hear what Steven Wilson could do with these type projects but he might take the stance that some albums are simply not candidates. Who knows.
What I would like to see instead of remixes is for Kevin Gray or someone in that league to remaster ATMP and then the demos hung on that boxset. Also would prefer showing more the creative process of a song with the demos and outtakes. From demo to full band rehearsal to pre-production to near finished. Show how the songs developed more or less. Would be a much more interesting journey imo.
Still I am thankful to be able to have the outtakes and demos in great quality. Since the remix is not my bag either, I am happy to stream the outtakes/demos.
Now if they decide to pull a Wildflowers Tom Petty and do a separate demo/outtakes 2 lp set? Im on it.

They were looking for new fans in Coachella crowd in my opinion. The bass is definitely too prominent in the mix and the vocals are WAY too compressed. Listen to the song All Things Must Pass and during the parts where he's really trying to do some raspy singing, it's so compressed and over-produced it actually becomes unpleasant to the ear. The importance of understanding how to mix and then master a recording to sound amazing has never been more apparent than when you listen to the original recording.

I don't mean to piss on what Giles Martin did on the previous Beatles releases but look at Blue note is doing with their 80th and tone poet series and the price they're giving us and the quality they're giving us and who they got to remaster and cut it's top notch. I think they are mixing these anniversary editions for a younger audience to attract them on streaming and vinyl. I personally like them. For ATMP, I always thought a lot of the tracks were a muddy mess. A lot of them were great. So, I am looking forward to the remix and see it as an addition, not a replacement. I think you're correct about maybe including two versions on the Bluray, a remix and a remaster. Maybe it's a cost thing? But yeah, that would be the thing to do. I also agree, even though I have most of the outtakes, their cleaned-up presentation is really worth the price of admission.

I have to say that I have not bought any version of this 50th Anniversary release. I have an original box set, in NM condition. But I’m interested in the new mixes/demos/outtakes etc., and was interested in your thoughts on this multiple-release, Mazzy, and so I watched your video. It’s funny - you said pretty much what I thought you would say, in general, anyway - and I think that’s what I needed to hear! That is, that these mixes don’t replace the original mix! So now I think I know what I wanna pick up - probably the 8-LP set. I’d LOVE to have the demos with Ringo & Klaus, for sure - I think the electric demos from day one would push my buttons! This is a very thoughtful review, and I thank you for that.
Wanna hear something funny? When I was in 6th grade, I remember Olivia Newton John’s hit version of “If Not For You”. She just turned it into a straight love song, I suppose - nothing really spiritual about it. But I LOVED her version; loved her voice and that slide guitar that almost sounds like it’s crying. I still dig that recording.
Wonderful video, Mazzy, thank you! 👍🏼❤️

The Wall of Sound probably looks like a little bit of mess for my generation. This new remixes is for me a fantastic thing of one of my favourite album of all time.

I'll courageously swim against the current here and openly state that I do NOT like the 50th anniversary remix of All Things Must Pass. The bass is ridiculously loud in the new mix. The reverb isn't gone, but all the echo and reverb have been flattened and compressed and just sound dull in the new mix. George's voice has been brought front and center now, but is that a good thing? I think Phil Spector understood that Harrison had a somewhat weak voice and limited vocal range, so he padded George's thin vocals with the Wall-of-Sound treatment. That was the right decision, in my opinion. The big bombastic numbers like "What is Life", "Wah Wah", "Awaiting on You All" and "Bring It Down" really lack the big boisterous wide sound they had in Spector's original mix. But the bass drowns out everything in the new mix. I believe that years from now fans will look back on the 50th Anniversary remix as a very poor remix in bad taste.

I love this review - very intelligent and very fair. I agree that the best way to approach the new stereo mix is as a complement or alternative, not as a definitive version. So many new (previously buried) sounds now come to light, which I found fantastic as a lifelong fan of All Things Must Pass. Perhaps for every newfound sound there's also something lost from before, but overall, I think Wah-Wah, Let It Down, I Dig Love (especially) and Hear Me Lord actually benefit from the new treatment. Those high-pitched backing vocals behind the lines "And I know how sweet life can be / If I keep myself free" in Wah-Wah - wow, so beautiful. I agree that My Sweet Lord possibly suffers, but not as much as Isn't It a Pity: yes, we get to hear a fuzzy synthesizer figure that's quite a surprise (I've haven't yet gone back to previous CDs to check whether the synth was there at all), but Pity, as much as My Sweet Lord, is the big "rock cathedral" ATMP track ... so, well, that is a bit of a pity. I've got used to the drier George lead vocals, after being a little concerned when the title track was previewed late last year. The outtakes/jams disc is phenomenal, so funny and exciting in places, same with the Day 1 demos disc. Overall, I think All Things Must Pass has always been such a MYSTERIOUS album, in a way that, say, JL/Plastic Ono Band is not, and in fact no piece of John or Paul music is, because they were so (too?) confident and assertive - meaning that it's okay if something about George's masterpiece remains elusive. It's the way it should be, somehow. Loved your piece on the Uber Deluxe as well, Norman. What a work of art that is!

The Beatles used Phil on let it be , ( Paul claims he didn’t like “ the long and winding road” wich brought tears to my eyes at 9 years old when it came out , it was the violins ,celos and horns , “Phil’s over production “ in wich I’ve gotten older DoNT care for as much) John used Phil on his first album , George on his , Phil had something for these guys , possibly more so for for as you say George’s voice being not as strong as the others , during the Beatles he had them to back him , on “his” album he had Eric and Bobby, Bobby being the strongest voice of the entire group including John and Paul and Eric , but if you like the warmth of the albums ( and knew and heard them as new), there’s no comparison to them no matter if you Prefer “accoustic spontaneity “ or over cooked steak , a good album IS a good album, BUT , what you get used to is always hard to beat , especially when the one who did it originally is no longer with us.
