    I came here after the Mori drama. Comparing you gave it to Kevin “very analogue …higher musicality “ I have to say, knowing what we now know, that you called it and that tells me your highest principle is to give us, the viewer, your HONEST thoughts. You could have easily second guessed it and gone mofi. This is why I like this channel. No bs you call it like you see it. Peace

    Spot on Micheal. To think that this album was almost never released because Berry Gordy thought it was to political for the time yet almost every song on this album hold so many truths of today. This album sounds better than my original pressing ( thank you Dad 🙏🏾) and was totally pleased with this release. I started off listen to the bonus album just to hear how this album came to be. And the mono singles on side 2 of the bonus record was awesome. This is an album that I can sing word for word back in 72 when I was only 8 years old. I own this also on CD and the last one I will be getting is the Detroit mix of this album. I missed out on the MoFi version and I will not pay the money people are asking for it. The 33 1/3 version is how I remember and came to love every song on this album. That the way it was intended to be heard.

    I'm relieved to hear you got a clean copy and I don't see any comments below about anyone with problems. Much different that what I read in the customer reviews on Amazon about their pressing/vinyl issues like pops, clicks and scratches. You didn't have any problems and nobody else left a comment noting any problems, so that assures me there's a good chance mine will be clean. Now, to continue working with Universal's web store customer service after they auto-cancelled my pre-order last week and my blood pressure went up. I pre-ordered it on their site when there was a special 40% holiday discount code after reading about this project and hearing it was Kevin Gray doing the mastering. I would have sent it to RTI for the pressings, but I'm sure they had good reasons.

    Fantastic review Michael. I'll be getting that. We should never take any of these releases for granted. Rewind to 1985. Kids think the Internet has been around forever but in 1985 I bought 99.9% of my music on vinyl. What's Going On was approaching mythical status for me because, believe it or not, it was deleted and you couldn't buy it. I searched everywhere and gave up when Terry Hooley (Good Vibrations) said it just isn't available. I finally heard it through my cousin who picked it up second hand in London. It would take 3 years before I got my own copy when it was reissued as a double CD with Let's Get It on - no vinyl release. So I'm away to buy it now for the fourth or fifth time 👍

    I agree with you 100% on this Kevin Gray issue. I listened to it 4 days in a row after receiving it. I can’t remember the last reissue I did that with. It’s that good. First 3 listens on my main turntable, 4th on a secondary on the same system. Still sounded amazing. I don’t have the MoFi, but I can’t even imagine how would one would split side A over two sides at 45rpm, as it is a continuous side. The fade-out must be very awkward on the MoFi. It wasn’t meant to be broken up. It’s like trying to break up Dark Side of the Moon….

    I know this might be a little off the subject but I have a double CD that was remastered back in 2001 by Motown on the Tamla label from the original master tapes using 96k/24-bit technology at Universal Mastering Studios-East. Mastered by: Disc 1 - Kevin Beeves and Disc 2 - Suba Gur. What I love about this copulation besides Marvin playing this complete album live at The kennedy Center (May 1, 1973) on the 2nd disc, is the original "Detroit Mix" of the complete album that was recorded April 5th, 1972. The commercial release was recorded on May 21st, 1971 which is the one every body knows. This Detroit Mix was unreleased and IMHO is the far superior version of this album. It's not just the sound quality but it is funky and has a lot more soul and depth and a little bit different beat, just a more felt performance, It's really different than than the original release. It's like they did a run through of the album for themselves feeling good with no limitations or rules, just playing for the pure fun of it. The "Detroit Mix" is just more real to Marvin Gaye's persona. It's like the "Detroit Mix" just wasn't commercial enough to be released to the general public, and the "Detroit Mix" was the way Marvin envisioned the album before the Studio Heads and executives got involved!

    Totally agree with you Michael, I received my copy a couple weeks ago and it has been played daily. A truly gorgeous pressing and I do have the One Step which although it sounds great, it really should have been done at 33 rpm because the 45 version breaks up the flow and continuity of the album. I love both but the 50th Anniversary version is clearly my favorite.

  • @sidvicious3129
    @sidvicious3129 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’m glad you are getting time to do this. I also have both copies and the Kevin Gray copy is all that you said that it is and it has more bass and sharp is a good word for it for the MFSL copy. The MFSl is a little too perfect sort of speak. The Kevin Gray copy is just right with everything in there in just the right amounts. MFSl needs to have Kevin Gray working for them.
    Keven Gray is one bad dude and definitely the Rudy Van Gelder of his time. This Marvin Gaye 2nd disc has the extra Acapella stuff added on and it gives you the sense of just how talented Marvin Gaye was and just how well his voice was. This man could really sing. The record is timeless because the things that he talked about so long ago are still present today.
    If you are an Audiophile and a Marvin Gaye fan of this album then this is the release to get, especially if you missed the MFSL copy. There are some pressing issues, but if you get a great copy you are in business. Record 2 (from my original copy) copy was partially stuck to the paper, but a deep clean took care of this, but the substance and paper left a small mark that is inaudible.
    If you are a collector, you will want both so that you can really appreciate what Kevin Gray has done and the fact that the MFSL-One Step is rising in value, like anything else Mofi- MFSL in limited quantities. This 2nd release is all that the MFSL should have been for a whole lot less money and yes Michael, Analogue is the right word for this second release, Analogue indeed.

    Another great review. Options are always good. The two versions are complimentary. One 33rpm and sounding more true to the original in relaxed presentation. Extras are icing on the cake. Nice.
    Then, the One-Step is great for hearing details in the mix but maybe not the best experience when just kicking back to enjoy this iconic album.

    Great video and thank you. My one criticism is that this review is geared towards experienced audiophiles. I am interested in audiophile aspect of music and would like to learn more...but how do these compare to standard reissue? I think the next generation, which is main reason for vinyl resurgence could use more exposure to quality pressings. Otherwise, record companies will just keep releasing crap, but making limited editions with colored vinyl effects and extra propaganda to market more sales. How can a new buyer distinguish between a quality pressing versus a over-hyped marketed pressing?

My one LP came scratched with one track damaged and I have sent it back for a replacement. Online forums suggested others also had complaints about the quality. The sound for the tracks that worked was amazing, and so I have my fingers crossed for a clean replacement.

I am confused as there seems to be a couple of versions.....one has 'Deluxe Edition 50th anniversary' on the footer of the cover and another does not.....I see it in amazon Spain and Fnac as two examples for over 50 euros yet in Germany the other example seems to be 25 euros...and in your links you have the two versions it seems? can you clarify? also they are not on sale until 29th April.....for once I would like to buy exactly what you have reviewed here as I favour the traditional LP sound as you commented and 'sharp' is not what I want on a record. I have this album already of course but I think this is a must buy version. Also for me 33 1/3 all the way as 45rpm just breaks the continuity of the appreciation of 'the whole'

    Michael thanks for the video. Couple of points
    1. I received my copy couple of weeks ago direct from USA to the UK and seems to be different version from yours . My cover is a trifold not gatefold with 3 high quality a4 photos in the centre trifold pocket which are ideal for framing . Same Kevin Gray etc etc .
    2. I have an original pressing and a MOFI 33rpm version (which came out before the one step) and of course this new one. Very surprised to say I think I prefer the MOFI which has for me much clearer and pronounced backing vocals from Marvin. Nevertheless great to have this new affordable version available with some fantastic extras. My favourites being the original version of Flying High with The Originals on backing vocals and the excellent stripped down version of the title track.

      That's the Limited Edition with the three prints and it costs $20 more than the Standard 2LP.

      @robburnett841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thanks for letting me know. The std edition is then a real bargain and a no brainier purchase. Should have said in my earlier comment that this album should only be in a 33rpm format. The first side is a classic suite which should not be broken up.

    It’s an amazing pressing. People just tend to echo bad things about GZ, without much knowledge in my opinion. All Gz pressings I have are very good

    • @tomwebb7091

      Hmmm i detect a lack of experience or just staggeringly good luck here. Id definately class GZ above MPO/Rainbo/URP and theyve certainly improved but its still a regular lottery with GZ. Optimal has really gone backwards which masks GZ's failings somewhat. Only Record Industry and Pallas in the EU can be consistently and heavily relied upon. GZ and Optimal are 50/50 and MPO cant press barely a single record without non fill!

      @@tomwebb7091 you’re right, but I think most people just repeat things they heard without knowing much, as in your case. I think GZ has come a long way, and hopefully all plants can be reliable and consistent someday. Existing and future plants, that everyone needs

      @@tomwebb7091 I dunno. I just bought two copies of the 45 rpm version of Fleetwood Mac "Rumours" pressed at Pallas and they're off-center. I bought them at different stores to see if maybe the first was just a fluke, but here they are. It's most noticeable on the second disc of each set. I don't really want to return them and then be unpleasantly surprised by a third or fourth off-center copy.

    The Kevin Gray cut is the best reissue! My NM 1st press is also excellent. I did purchase the One-Step and it was a huge disappointment, and I did sell it for quite a bit. The album was produced as a song cycle each side. So splitting up the songs is a crime and it does not sound right.

    It goes to show you the importance of mastering. The one step has all the "advantages" to create the reference copy for this release. However, it falls short because of inferior mastering. Also, the 50th anniversary release proves you do not need to spend $100 plus to get an amazing listening experience.

      I’ve found with Amazon reviews that they will post reviews of various issues of an album on the product page. Next time you are on an Amazon pre-order page see if you don’t find that there are already reviews posted for that product. Also, many times I’ve seen reviews talking about a CD version when I’m shopping for vinyl.
      That being said, reviewers like Michael haven’t let me down yet! And he’s right again when it comes to this 50th anniversary issue. It’s excellent.
