I laughed when you said, "George Harrison's first solo album..." then picked up and put down 'Wonderwall'. What would have been even funnier had you also picked up 'Electronic Sound' then put that down as well - LOL!

Wall of Mud. LOL. Perfect description of his production quality. One can only imagine how this album would have sounded if were produced by George Martin.

I've said to friends that the 2021 remix feels like it could've been produced by George Martin, still lush, but more in keeping with the feel of 'Abbey Road'.

    • @franklinhankel6168
      @franklinhankel6168 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Absolutely would have been better. George Martin's orchestral arrangements alone would have made it sound better. Something cheesy about Spector's string arrangements, I'm not a musician, but this album and Let It Be just don't sound up par with the others.

The earlier US pressings sound just great with a good phono cartridge and speakers. Rich and doomy. Wouldn't change a thing.

Phil's production covers for the deficiency in George's vocals, something that the remix makes apparent. Love it or hate it, Phil's production is an integral part of the album, something George acknowledged in his 2001 edition.

I still have the boxed All Things Must Pass album I bought when I was in college (about 1975). The poster is still in the box, the only damage is four small holes in the corners made when I thumb tacked it to my dorm wall. Haven't listened to it in a long time.

I bought the 3CD edition. I would have purchased the 5 disc version if it had been priced at a reasonable cost. I thought the new mixes sounded okay and enjoyed the 17 track third disc very much. However, it seems after I’ve listened to a remixed album, I always revert back to the original and I seldom revisit the demos, early and/or alternate takes.
I didn’t even consider the Super Duper Deluxe Uber Edition. I probably would have a few years ago when I just had to have everything, including the McCartney deluxe Wild Life/Red Rose Speedway/1971-73 Big Box.
Thank you for another entertaining and humorous video.
I am already looking forward to next Sunday’s presentation. Keep up the wonderful work.👍👍

That's right. The thrill doesn't last. You hear the bonus stuff once and then are you ever gonna listen to it again? They pushed all of George's half ass demos on this new release instead of take after take of the band building up each track with the layers. That's what should have been showcased.

Dare I say that the "Wall of Mud" is what makes this such an epic and iconic album? Also, it wasn't all Phil Spector's doing. The vast majority of it was George Harrison, because Spector wasn't around for much of the album's production, and when he was, he apparently didn't say much, just made a few suggestions here and there, some of which Harrison accepted, some of which he rejected. This wasn't a _Let It Be_ scenario where Spector was given the unenviable task of salvaging an album that even the Beatles themselves weren't very enthusiastic about, this was George Harrison in complete control producing exactly the album he wanted.

I have the "Printed in Great Britain" edition. I bought it with my first proper wage packet in 1975/76. I bought it from Debenams in Bracknell and it had the smooth paper inner sleeves, which I foolishly replaced with the more common textured versions because my original smooth sleeves had seam splits from new and I wanted sleeves without seam splits.

Another great , humorous and informative video! I bought the 5 CD Deluxe Set and the Vinyl LP Set. And I have got to say I am very impressed with the remixes and the toning down of the "Spector wall of sound" . Paul Hicks and Dhani did an amazing job ! As much love as i have for the new box sets. I will still always have a soft spot for the original 1970 and 2001 versions !

I just got a cd copy from a friend today for my bday. Not the “gnome” set but the lovely smaller box set. I was and am thrilled.
But I do wanna bring up the remixes that have appeared over the years. To me the original (US) copy was superb. Again it had a “feel” to it. I tend to agree that the UK version was a tad brighter but not distractingly so. I loved it as well.
Not without hearing this new set I will say, stay as close to the original releases as possible. The warmth is there, as well as the power and soul. Remasters have almost made them brittle to my ears. But hey, I was a drummer for 40 years...🥴😁 Thanks for your views on The Uber set. To me, if you can afford and give it a good home, without the bragging rights, then have at it. The music’s still there.

I suggest doing a review of Wonderwall...... I still have the original U.S. issue, bought when first released, complete with insert. For me, this album is by far THE MOST interesting of ANY of the solo Beatles work, far eclipsing all other solo Beatles undertakings. A go-to album in the days when I was dropping acid and mescaline. I still have the VHS release of the film of the same title...... which I need to revisit again, having not seen it in many years. As always, appreciation for your dedication, generosity of spirit and insights.

I only got the 3 CD set myself, found the other demos online. I've compared it to the 1990s, 2001, 2014, and new 2020. I believe the new one has many improvements, and vocals have been brought to the forefront along with the Bass. I do find many of the backing instruments have been overshadowed. I see a bit above the 2014 remaster, and worth the purchase price I paid. My go to is the 2001 remix/remaster, I think the vocals and all instruments are given their space and clear sounding. Also George himself was involved in the total project. To my ears, I like the 2001 best, 2014 is very good and so is the new one. The Demos and Outtakes are well worth having.

I like the intro! Great vid as always, I have a 1st Canadian pressing of this album (unique stampers), has always sounded great to these ears. Took me a while to find a copy without a broken spine - I'm surprised you didn't mention that obvious design flaw, I have seen a lot of u.s./canadian copies where the thin plastic spine has dried out and is ripped or broken entirely. Even now when I open my box to play the records I am extra gentle.

I have the original vinyl from all those years ago.... brilliant first time I heard it... played through my Wharfedale speakers in the RAF Barrack room. Avid listeners waiting to hear what George had produced. Well, to an airman, the consensus was LOUD and brilliant. It was played for around 5 hours non-stop. I still play it on the turntable and modern Wharefdales. Still sounds wonderful and is often played. The new CD, received today, 3 CDs jobby, is different. I love the new sounds. I have the best of original and new. Enjoy. The wall of sound has more or less vanished and everything is balanced on the new CD. You pays your money and makes your choice. 50 years ago it was brilliant and today is almost as brilliant. Enjoy.

You keep referring to the 2001 as a "remix." It was not a remix; it was a remaster. "I still like the songs on the album and believe they can continue to outlive the style in which they were recorded. It was difficult to resist re-mixing every track. All these years later I would like to liberate some of the songs from the big production that seemed appropriate at the time but now seem a bit over the top with the reverb in the wall of sound." That quote is from the liner notes of the 2001 edition written by George Harrison. The principal point of this release was to finally do that remix that Harrison wanted but unfortunately he passed away before he could actually do it.

Yea I listened to it and that’s what it sounds like to me. Closer to his other solo work after that and how he mixed stuff. The presence of his solo and slide bits in the mix. Fits more with the rest of his catalog now the 2020 mix

  • @JaySpangler
    @JaySpangler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

They should have made the 50th release a stripped down “naked” mix. While the original Spector version may feel heavy-handed with ‘verb at certain points, (i’m looking at you Wah Wah), the new mixes don’t have the right size and scope. The new drums sound great, the overall clarity/separation is great of course... but the new mixes don’t feel big in the right way. They actually lost some magic by cleaning the mixes up too much. While nice to hear this fresh take on it, 1970 is still the one to go back to. Love those alt takes tho!

  • @beatleman69

I recently bought the 2020 remix of the album and I think its great. You hear instruments that were buried in the original mix plus you can hear them singing "Sir Frankie Crisp" (which I wasn't even aware it was even there, obviously buried way down in the mix), someone pointed it out on you tube. Of course it doesn't have the punch like the original and sounds more like regular album than the wall of sound that it is. I notice in your video it gave the song writing credit of "I'd Have You Anytime" to Harrison/Feldman. It's suppose to be Harrison/Dylan.

I picked up the US printing a few years back for about $30. It had the poster of George inside but it has thumbtack holes in the corners, so the seller bundled it back in! It looked like Gandalf at first glance. It’s very dark and uninspiring but I’m glad it’s there. This album is just a delight, with Clapton and Gary Wright and Dave Mason and Billy Preston all contributing. I can’t imagine my vinyl collection without it.

The 2021 release of All Things Must Pass felt like having a wish granted. I always wanted to hear an honest-to-god remix of the whole album after being disappointed by different CD masterings of this original mix (not a vinyl guy). So to not feel fatigued and hear some clarity and warmth on songs like "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life" was nothing short of a revelation.

Never saw your reply, with TH-cam being what it is: The 2001 release is a remaster with five bonus tracks. Only three of them are remixes by George Harrison, the other two are demos.
In an odd choice, the bonus tracks are featured at the end of first CD, interrupting the album's original running order. While not the most elegant solution, I would have had the first two LPs on CD1, with the Apple Jams and bonus tracks on CD2. (Speaking of odd choices, that crayon coloured album artwork on the 2001 is also very tacky, imo)

I notice at the end of your excellent video. Picture discs are being featured soon, the only one I have is All you need is love from 1987. Bought it in Woolworths. You could get the black vinyl version or as a 13 year old a flashy picture disc I think for the same price. I notice its in mono which is a shame as it would be good in stereo. Plus like picture discs the non picture bit is silent but as soon as your stylus hits the picture part it is like a rumble, especially if the picture bit is uneven, silent then rumble as the record goes around. It does look quite funky as it goes around and I quite like it and glad as a younger me decided to buy it

OMG Funny. To finally answer your question to me some time ago - YES I will be your agent.
Last year I found a minty, possibly unplayed US Capitol 1988 ATMP on Ebay. Even though I assume this lp was cut from the same (second generation??) master as the US original issue, there is a bonus here. This album was cut by Specialty Records Co. at the time when Capitol began farming out lp production. As you once mentioned, Capitol used vinyl with impurities. SRC used virgin vinyl. This lp plays much cleaner with dead quiet backround than what I remember my original sounded like. Capitol also used leftover original issue orange apple labels for this release and included the color inner sleeves and poster. Info from the Perry Cox book. Cost was about $20. Great video, Andrew.

Yesterday I compared the new mix with my 1970 pressing (-1 on all sides and Eric Clapton gets the credit).
Personally I will play the 1970 one in the future as well. More lively and engaging.
The new mix is not bad, but some of the songs like My Sweet Lord and Wah Wah are just smooth and dull...like the life has been sucked out from them. But that's just my opinion :)
But the five albums in the Super Deluxe Vinyl box of demos and jams are great. And the 60 page book as well.
Worth the price? Come back in ten years and ask me how many times I have played it. But as a fan - yes...

Thanks for another great informative presentation! I have a US copy, and yes the box is pretty flimsy and just barely deep enough. The inner sleeve for the first record is missing the copyright info at the end of the lyrics, so it appears some misprinted copies are out there.

Oh, the irony! of your introduction! Love the gnomes and the zero dolby extras in the trash bin! And I agree that Wonderwall is the first serious Beatles solo effort (forget Family Way). On a more serious note, I bought the album when it came out, and what a strange beast it turns out to be! STCH 639 of course. Recorded in England on the labels, but also Manufactured ('Mfd.') in the UK, but bought in Germany in November or December 1970, with Eric Clapton in the credits and the poster 'printed in USA'. No address in the inner orange lid, no 'printed' stamp either (obviously your second version of the box). It seems that the box was the US version in Germany, too. Now for 'the best-sounding version of the album' (UK first): YEX B 17 - 1, B 18 -1 U (STCH 1-639 on the label); YEX B 19 - 1U, B 20 - 1U (STCH 2-639 on the label, obviously). (I won't bother with the jam LP right now). What strikes me is that UK seems to have pressed records not only for their own market (biggest in Europe then, 2nd worldwide) but also for (then) West Germany, second biggest, although they had to import boxes and prints from the US at the same time and although West German Electrola had shown they could supply pressings and sleeves for more than one country from 1968. So what was going on?
Fun fact: In the UK, ATMP was kept from the top spot by Bridge Over Troubled Water, or so it seemed at the time. Later research showed that charts positions were frozen (in the news outlets) for a time because of a Royal Mail strike which prevented sales figures to be registered on time (selected shops turned in their sales by mail at the time). As it turned out, ATMP had overtaken the Bridge during the time that no data was available for the media. Records (in more than one sense) were corrected decades later.

I found my copy for $40 a few years back in a record store. As is unfortunately common for the US boxes, there was a bit of tape on there but nothing too bad. The records themselves were in beautiful condition and sound wonderful, and I suppose that's the most important thing. Anyway, I haven't been tempted by the remix to be honest... I wouldn't want to get rid of my original copy and having two box sets would take up a lot of valuable vinyl real estate.

Another great video from Andrew, but I have to protest a little bit when he talks of "Classical Music" showing a box set of was is in fact "Early Music", or if you prefer "Medieval Music", by David Munroe. Incidentally, Munroe was also heavily involved with the English folk-rock scene of the early 1970s. He knew where the stuff was coming from and worked with people such as Shirley Collins and The Albion Band. There were also links to Britain's best ever modern acoustic guitarist John Renbourn, the band Pentangle, the Young Tradition and many more. I wouldn't be surprised if George Harrison was well aware of his work too. Now back to George ...

Loved this video Andrew very funny 😁 also informative. I have a first press UK copy (recorded in England labels, printed in USA inside the lid and also on the bottom right of the front cover). Box and sleeves are in now tatty but the records are clean as a whistle and as you say are easily the best sounding. My early 80s (White inner box, sleeves, lighter vinyl and slightly less sharp cover image) sounds great too. I also have the clumsy first double CD from I think the late 80s.. not sure how that sounds..

Great video. Im now going to hunt down a UK OG. The new Re issue is nice, really good on more mellow songs. Wah Wah sounds worse and even more cluttered than the original mix, but it's among the worse on this new edition, IMO. Good to know I can search up to early 80s for an original UK. Cheers.

Hilarious start, hats off on all levels! Despite its flaws in production, the original release is and will for me always be the truest edition. Can't say the new one, which I own the 5cd-set if, impresses much or will be something I'll go back and listen to. Nor value for money or value for sound. Expected more.

Another great video filled with fantastic information. I don't own this album. ...yet...in any format. ..so watching this was pretty important for me as I'm thinking of getting the vinyl version.
Speaking of 3 LP album releases. ..the other album that comes to mind is Yes - Yessongs. That was a live album that Atlantic Records were not too happy about releasing ...as they felt it was a very costly release to make. But they soon changed their opinions as it became one of the biggest selling albums in Germany. ..and did very well in other countries around the world.

The 2020 remix is, like the Beatles remixes, a mixed bag. Some tracks I love, some I’m mystified by (what happened to the drums on “What is Life”?). However, I’ve never been clear on what the preferred vinyl pressing was, so I’ll be checking online for a UK set!

I have a US pressing I bought about 10 years ago. It has the Capitol info inside the inner lid and no Clapton credit. There is sparse publishing info on the LP label too. I used to own the cassettes when I was young and I love the sound of the original. Especially after I found my mint original copy. I bought the 5LP 50th edition and was a bit let down with the balance of the sound. It sounds like they used some digital technique to minimise the reverb and it's affected the frequency spectrum or smeared the phase relationship between the instruments. It sounds thuddy and lacks clarity. Some tracks sound great though and I wonder if it's just the de spectorised ones that are affected?

Great points here. First of all, Phil Spector and his "Wall of mud" production. That sums it up perfectly. I never understood the adoration of him as a producer past 1963. Second - remix album projects are only good to listen to a handful of times. Outtakes will never "replace" the proper versions that you have set in your mind's ear already.

They all want original 1970 near mint money

Fascinating and in depth as ever, with added hilarity this is the best All Things video going amidst a thousand anniversary unboxings! I have to say I’m still none the wiser about my vinyl copy though… The box seems to be the earliest type, thin, Eric included, no address, made in USA, but the label has got the Mecolico publishing credits and no ‘Recorded in England’… anyone out there have any idea when it might have been pressed/produced? It definitely smells 50 years old… 🤔

Andrew, did the UK pressings get pressed with lighter weight vinyl over time? I had a UK pressing with a Made In Great Britian box (mid-70's?) but the LP's were barely 110 grams each. This was quite interesting because I thought I have a later US pressing, but my copy has all the marks you mentioned of a first US pressing (small circle symbol inside lid Printed in USA, etc) - except for the runouts. I cannot find an exact match for mine which has etched STCH - 1 - 639 - Z - 1. #4 on side one with a sort of asterisk symbol. There's another sort of circular shape in the runout kind of off by itself.
