Just last year I did a COMPLETE remodel of what I call my “Stash Closet” by removing 13 years of collecting as I was working at my local FQS and never brought home a paycheck but fabric instead. I built a center island with those 9-cube shelves and put a 1” thick board on top which increased my storage by 36-bins. I then organized my fabrics by color/cut goods/Halloween/Christmas/panels/Batiks/large cuts/novelty prints/big florals and even a section of never cut like my Laural Burch fabrics that are now considered collectors items. I am very blessed to have the setup I have and even more blessed to have a husband that understands my sickness/obsession when it comes to my QUILTING! I do however have issues with scraps which I will address throughout this month because the good Lord knows, it didn’t get like it is in a month so I’m not going to stress myself out and try to deal with it in one day. THANK YOU PAT for being my motivator 🎉 Any YAY…. We are at 90.1 TH-cam SUBSCRIBERS! ✨💥⭐️🌟

"Go play with your fabric" - this comment made me laugh. Thanks Pat for keeping the organization simple and the comments about wanting to buy new fabric and getting rid of fabric you did not use - wow, that is wonderful to hear! So many quilters say build your stash and save that corner to make a triangle. . who has that space! Whoo Hoo, such encouragement.

I had "fun" today repurposing quilt scraps while mostly emptying a big basket of saved scraps -- Scraps of batting and backing which were trimmed from the sides of finished quilts to square and prepare for binding. The scraps varied from a few inches wide to 8" wide by the length of the quilt. Narrower scraps I flat-locked together to make wider strips. Then I cut each strip about 16-20 inches long, serged the two short ends to clean finish. Where needed I basted the batting and fabric down the middle to anchor them together, then folded in half to be 8-10 inches long and serged the two long sides together. I also cut up and used some quilt sandwiches I'd saved from practicing free motion quilting into strips then serged as above (sorry doggies). Made great, cushioned "U"-shaped pouchs to put my fragile nativity pieces in. One pouch per piece. It's a two-fer: Organized and repurposed a basket of scraps and put a bunch of Christmas decorations away! Thanks, Pat for helping me clean out scraps I've had for years!

It's helped me enormously when I heard in a video, You can't organize clutter (I think Marie Kondo?) We downsized last summer to a much smaller senior complex apartment. No more almost limitless storage for fabrics, tools, and craft items. Also, letting go of my "fantasy self," being brutally honest with myself about what I was likely to actually get done in my lifetime (I'm. 80) , made it possible to get my supplies down to a manageable level that fits in one large closet and a couple of small drawer units under my 2 work tables. The priorities I chose are to finish throw quilts for our children, grandchildren, and great-grands and all the spouses, and to be equipped to do a few jewelry and clothing repairs and alterations for family and friends. Period! Then I was able to let go of the fantasies of all the vast projects I had held in the back of my mind and, consequently, all the "stuff" I had been hoarding for that.

I am starting to tidy up and sort as I ignored it in 2022 and just bought several bins to throw scraps into. I sorted 1 of my scrap bins yesterday, and found it was therapeutic - pile to keep was about a 1/4 of the bin.
I have a suggestion - with your "PARTS CENTRE" why not give a bag to each of your friends/ambassadors - with a challenge they can only add 1 fabric and/or 1 background to see what they can make with their allocated bag! They could make anything - quilt, table runner, bag, clothes etc. (This idea comes from 12 days of Quiltmas 2022)

I shared somewhere (maybe on your quilting page, I don't know now) that my word for 2023 is Finish. I was helped by another member, Mary, to come to that conclusion. I really need to finish so many projects. And I have finished three pillows so far! Yay! As far as organizing, if I get too organized, I can't find anything. Yes, I'm one of those! Creation through Chaos! The idea of sorting by color appeals to me, but, because my sewing room is also my bedroom, I think it would put too much (more!) lint in the air to keep it in open baskets. So most of my fabric is in smaller plastic - clear - boxes. But so far, it is organized by topic - fabric I'm collecting for my son's quit, floral fabric, Christmas fabric, projects ready to start or in progress, etc. I do have all my purple fabric in one place, with the goal of making a mostly purple quit or two. My main problem is keeping up with tops that are pieced or nearly done. I don't have a large area to keep them, and I keep moving them from my work table/ironing board to my bed, and back again at night. If anyone has any suggestions for storing those types of things, I'd like to hear it! Thanks Pat, for sharing your wisdom with us, and nudging us along the organizing pathway!

I like the word you chose: FUN! That's what quilting is to me. It's also a source of calm. But it sure is fun and it's always good to make daily things fun! I too, will be cleaning my sewing and fabric areas, but I am one that will not part with my fabric. I did watch a video about how someone stored their fabric, so I'm going to try and do all mine that way and see if it can make more space for what is just waiting to be put up. My husband challenged me to not buy fabric this year and see how much I can sew up this year. I accepted that challenge - pray for me!

Pulled them all out and dumped them on the bed then they have to be sorted and organised before I go to bed :)
Some will be great for quilt backings...those hand embroidered by someone, some are for the second hand shop and some will go to the textile recycling container.

You sounded a bit defensive in the beginning of your fabric management advice. Hopefully this came from something positive, such as a yoga practice emphasizing listening to your body and following your inner voice, and not from some people criticizing the advice you have given in the past. I don’t quilt the style that you quilt, and yet I follow you almost religiously because you present wonderfully helpful advice and especially project management. You do you, just as you tell others to do. Your work is great.

90K yay!!!! I love “Fun” great word and it’s what we all need these days. I would love to sort my fabric by color but it’s a struggle for me. Fabric, period is a struggle. I’m going to try and rid myself of some and tidy some. It’s to overwhelming to tackle it all as I have a lot. My goal this year is to not buy new unless it’s needed to finish a project. Goal, it’s just a goal.

I keep 5 yard pieces in one place because those are the ones that I use for backings. If they are 5 yards or more of solids, those are used as backgrounds and kept in a different place but together. I keep all my one yard pieces folded and sorted by color. Anything larger than a yard, but less than 5, is folded long ways and in a stack on a shelf by color to find easily. I have a 12 9 cube furniture organizer. So, I put Jelly rolls, charm packs in separate cube bins and layer cakes on the cube organizing shelves

Thanks for this advice about organizing fabrics. I have 50 boxes in storage ( mostly primitive), a storage shed full mostly modern, attic over garage with wool and flannels , bins under my long arm with various fabrics and my sewing room is stuffed. I have been slowly giving away boxes of scraps, fat quarters, and yardage to my quilting group. I don’t feel up to a big yard sale. Not sure how to scale down and would like to recoup some of my $$. It is really hard.

One year I cut up some foam board and made small bolts of yardage. I pinned a label on them; it said how much there was and the width. Then I lined them up on a closet shelf by color. (I like to organize!)
Question: what to do with the extra fabric you trim off a finished quilt. I have several piles of sandwiched pieces, the length and width of a quilt (some are 4 and 5 inches wide). They need to be separated,...suggestions? Maybe toss? Keep batting pieces in a bag? Cut up the fabric? What do you do?

I love the "Home Is" quilt! Earlier in 2022 I downloaded all of the patterns so that I can make the quilt in 2023. Blue, blue, blue is my favorite color so I'll be following your previous "Home Is" videos to get your beautiful colorway.
I have a lot of precuts and could start my own fabric shop as you said lol. When I was making room for the sewing machine and serger that I inherited from my Mom last year I reorganized my sewing area and all of my precuts. It took days. Now I have each precut separated on different bookshelves, and if I purchased yardage for borders and/or binding I have that underneath the matching precut. That way I don't accidently use the yardage for something else. It's really pretty like that. One of the biggest things I learned (besides the fact that I have too much fabric) is that the name of the layer cake or charm pack needs to be written on the paper wrapper for quick reference. I'm retired and spend many hours in my sewing area each day. I think I need to sew faster...
I really enjoyed your interview with Donna last night. You fielded a ton of questions. 😊

What a great word of the year you chose! Fun. I have a question about fabrics. I have a lot of old fabrics. A lot of them came from my mom's stash. I want to keep them and continue to use them because I love scrappy quilts and anything vintage. Would you keep them desperate, by color or integrate them with your newer fabrics? Congratulations on getting the sweater weather top done! It looks great.

Lori Holt has a great system for scraps. She explains it on her website and also in her new book.

I finally went through my final bag of fabric, kept some but all the rest was donated to different charities. It's FUN to breath when you are organized and not feeling overwhelmed. Thank you Pat for all of your advice and knowledge.

In November I went through my fabrics and found a lot of project fabrics sitting together but not separated. I bought pretty cardboard present boxes and put one project in each and input a plastic sleeve in the front side of the box and folded part of the pattern quilt page to see what is inside. My boxes are now on top of each other on my shelves and I can see them beautifully. I also did this to my project UFO.

Wow! Fun! That is what went through my mind the other day when you talked about word of the year...Mine should be "fun" because I have been so isolated....

it was fun seeing your "Home Is" quilt again. I joined your Channel March 2020 and the first quilt we did was "Stay at Home". I am almost done with the top ...having it planned to be worked on so that I can get the top done (maybe not quilted yet) but the top done by March 2023 to share... I would love to see everyone share theirs again this year in March , or maybe it was April when we did them, just to see them all again... How fun would it be to do that... I also have plans to finish up all the rest I didn't get done in 2020, and 2021 don't think I did much in 2022 and if all I get done in 2023 is to finish up the ones previously, then I'll be happy with that. : )

I agree completely on things looking cute or I'm not interested! My word of the year is PRIORITIZE and I am using the bullet journal/planner to do that!

Pat, your quilts are beautiful, I especially love the blue and white one called Home, but can you tell me where can I find that Harmony blue wide backing fabric? Oh my goodness it's gorgeous. Really enjoyed the video it was full of ideas, I hope to use some of them in my sewing room. Thank you in advance, and Happy New Year to you and Greg.

I definitely have fabric to sort! Last year I bough all the ins & color coordinated and have a few theme fabric. BUT I am very guilty of hoarding scraps 🙄. Love this tidy up challenge!

I hadn’t even watched yesterday’s video, when I read the pages on your Tidy Up Challenge. I love the idea! I enjoy how you occasionally work into your videos about tidying up! I have so many crates of stuff in my studio, that I’m not entirely sure what’s in all of them. I’ve already gone through and purged some shop hop patterns from years ago, to clean out a binder; now I use that binder to save xstitch patterns that I’ve used and want to make. I’m organizing and purging as I go!

I love your word for the year! You made me think about my word…Grace…and how mine almost seems negative instead of positive like I intended…hmmm. Something to ponder I guess. Happy sweater weather is finished! It is so pretty. You inspire me to make more quilts with your color changes. I want to eventually have enough to change all my bed quilts out by holiday or season. Thank you Pat!

What fun I will have seeing all the fabric I have forgotten about! (I used your word of the year. 😊 ) My goal is just to get all the loose fabric contained and under control. This will be an ongoing project this year. I may just have to sew more. 😮
