This is probably one of the most in depth and actually informative videos I have ever watched. Not a lot of glossing over things and I actually didn't get bored because everything was relatively to the point. Top tier man, 10/10.
Thank you so much! Glad you found the video helpful!
Can't believe this is released for free...
Absolutely amazing, thanks you very much !!
Very professionnal and neat content, love it
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
This is a fantastic video. Answered so many of my questions. Thank you!!
I think this is one of the most well laid out tutorials. Thank you.
Wow, this user guide video is an absolute game-changer! It's like having a personal guide right at my fingertips, walking me through every step with clarity and precision. No more confusion on some of the options within the menu - just smooth sailing as I navigate through the ins and outs of all the settings. Kudos to the creator for crafting such an invaluable resource! I definitely got some 'set'things ;) out of it, which I will use! Ohh and I ordered the Grey flippyflopfold 'Card'.
Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
amazing video tutorial, Thank you so much for this.
Thanks a lot for your explanation, I watched more or less four different R6 II setup videos and each person added something that the others did not mention. Like the way you explain and show the results.
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
amazing work
thank you for spending some time to walk us through the menu
You are very welcome. Thanks for watching!
This is enlightening ! Thank you!
Excellent tutorial, great stuff. Thank you for putting this together.

Thanks a lot for all the information you provide on this video! There is always a tip I get from you.
Cheers!
You are very welcome. Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for a great video, by far one the best on the subject. Not often I can use 2,5 hours on a video that is so to the point while adjusting my own camera.

interesting how you and Jared post r6 mark ii user guide video at the same time. gonna have an good time watching all these videos. nice video!
Haha. Yeah that is a funny coincidence. I was going to post this yesterday but I was having a lot of issues with the newest Final Cut Pro update. Enjoy the videos!
Haven't started watching, but that long for my newly-bought R6II and for video, I'm IN!!! Thanks mate.
You're welcome! Enjoy!
@@Josh_Sattin Regarding recommadations, got a RF 70-200 f4 with it. Thinking of selling it and my 24-105 f4 for a 24-70 2.8 you have. Worth it? (I mean that additional stop of light not to get high on ISO).
Very in Depth, learned a lot. Thank you !
You're welcome. Glad it was helpful for you. Thanks for watching!
Canon R6 ii is the BEST camera for me. Thank you for this informative video. I will also use your link to get my Square Space video.

Thanks a lot Josh. I'm about to pick up R6ii. I sold my original r6 due to overheating. This will be very helpful.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching and enjoy the R6 II !
Very helpful!
Awesome. Thanks for watching!
Thanks Josh! Well done! I just found something very annoying on this camera, we can't have Zebras on and Focus peaking on at the same time.
You’re welcome! Yes, another annoyance of the Canon mirrorless operating system.
Absolutely excellent video! I sent this to my son to learn its excellent. Also he says "why isnt this guy touching the screen for menus and settings" 😂 god damn iphone kids.
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for all this valuable information. I discovered you when I first got my R6 mark II , and thanks to you now I love it because I mastered it and feel extremely comfortable on any scenario with it.
Thank you so much. I just have one question.
I am an event and wedding videographer, and sometimes the receptions are pretty dark. What’s the maximum ISO you would go with this R6 II?
You're welcome! I personally don't shoot in low light situations very often so I don't have a max ISO number as a guide. You can see my R6II Low Light tests here: th-cam.com/video/MMNuboq6QUY/w-d-xo.html
Hi, just got my R6 mk 2 and have been watching your helpful videos. What I don"t understand are the different AF areas in video, seems little point in most of them. Is there a way to get them to work the same as in photo/servo mode? Where you can put the point over an object, it puts a blue box over it and tracks it? In video it seems the only way to do that is with the rear LCD with full area touch tracking.
Thanks
What a compendium of fabulous information!
One concern I have when using AF for wildlife IS that there are many occasions when subject recognition is poor and/or tracking commences but falls off ( like you I use whole area and touch screen)
How do you work around these situations?
Keep up the fine work!
Thanks! I find that the AF for wildlife is really good on the newest Canon cameras, but like all cameras, they struggle sometimes based on the subject, conditions, etc. I usually pop into manual focus if I need to. Sometimes you will be able to focus better than the camera. Takes some practice, but it's a good skill to have. Thanks for checking out the video!
@@Josh_Sattin
I end up doing the same!
At some stage could you do a video showing your focusing strategies in various situations and variable subjects
Thank you so much for the thorough walk through!!! If you have a minute, I have a question regarding the HDMI output. I'd like to monitor the audio as well as the video, hopefully without having to connect headphones separately. Any idea whether the HDMI output sends audio as well? I have been unsuccessful so far when trying to monitor both video and sound on an external monitor with sepakers.
You're welcome. Yes, HDMI will send out video and audio together.
Thanks so much for this incredible tutorial! I learned a TON! If you’re not sending raw into Atomos I’m curious what video settings on Atomos V you recommend for the most efficient/high quality capture of R6II? Thanks!
You’re welcome. If you aren’t recording raw into the Atomos then I would recommend just recording internally in the camera.
How make that the level and histogram do not disappear from the display during video recording?
Enjoyed the podcast, thank you! You mentioned in passing using a speed booster with EF lenses on Canon crop factor cameras (and I note you've done some videos on the subject limited to Canon). Will this also work with, for example, the Viltrox EF-E II 0.71x Lens Mount Adapter for Canon EF-Mount Lens on the FX30? The adapter is very affordable and it's tempting.
You're welcome. No, those speedboosters adapt an EF lens to a RF body, not a Sony E mount.
@@Josh_Sattin VILTROX EF-E II Auto Focus 0.71x Focal Reducer Speed Booster Lens Adapter with CDAF/PDAF Switch for Canon EF Lens to Sony E-Mount
Great video, thank you.
So how does the recording internally work if you are shooting RAW (23:19) and your 4k feed is sent to HDMI and the FHD is sent to card slot 2.
Does this mean you still have to use the option where you hit INFO till you have a blank screen to get the clean HDMI feed?
You're welcome. If you are shooting raw then I don't think you can get the HDMI info to go out over HDMI. Here is a video that I made about shooting raw on the R6II: th-cam.com/video/KLZ1-_4_JOU/w-d-xo.html
Josh you videos are always amazing. Do you mind making a video talking about the build I'm live stream available in cameras such R6 R6 MARK II. There is not a clear video online explaining that
Thank you. What questions do you have about livestreaming? I usually recommend getting an Atem Mini or Elgato Camlink to connect to the HDMI out of the camera.
@@Josh_Sattin I Mean. The eos R7 and R6 MARK II they both offer the build live streaming. It is really useful to use it for example when they ask you for it at the last moment online on a wedding or any event. But there is no clear video explaining that on TH-cam.
@@mcphotographynymariocastro6313 My buddy Geoff made a video: th-cam.com/video/h6nXB2LIUb0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Josh, as you always do, great video.
THANK YOU. 👍🏻☀️🌴📸🌋🏝☕
You're welcome. Thanks as always for watching!
Great video 👌 Just got the R6II (have the R5 since before) But did only do photo. If shooting video of motorsport , motocross bikes to be accurate, is using auto iso a way to go? I meen when follow a rider the lighting condition could change. Maybe set a base exposure with iso 800 and then switch to auto iso?
Thanks! There are lots of ways to do all of this stuff. If I an shooting outdoors during the day I would set everything the way that I want and then adjust the exposure with a variable ND filter.
Great videos!!! Can't understand why the R6 II hasn't the 4K 120P as the old 5D MK4...
Thank you. The 5DIV does not shoot 4K120p.
Another question on the white balance - what about the colours around the grey card? What if they were not grey like your space - how would that affect the white balance? Is is just measured at the center point of the screen?
I would assume it reads in the center. Unfortunately it doesn't have that target box like other cameras but I keep the gray card in the center and try to make take up a good bit of the frame. Canon really needs to improve the custom white balance on their mirrorless cameras. It works way better on their cinema cameras.
thank you for the perfect guide
i have a canon R6 mark 2.
when i go into the menu for movie rec. size i want to choose 4K 23.98
but i dont have all thoes options. also when i'm on video
could it be because the lens i have?
You're welcome. You are probably in PAL and not NTSC. Please see 31:30 in this video where I explain that.
canon R6 Mark II how to control via ext Touch screen , Feelworld touch is only controlling menu, not Camera menu or other function
What are the pros/cons of using camera HDMI raw output vs using CLOG3 when sending to the Atomos? I am pretty much a newb with the Atomos and the R6 MII. You covered the interface/function differences perfectly - I guess I am wondering what the performance/quality differences are. Why would you use raw output vs non-raw?
th-cam.com/video/KLZ1-_4_JOU/w-d-xo.html
This video had too many juicy nuggets of golden information for me not to subscribe!!!!
Glad the video was helpful for you. Thanks for watching and for the support!
Josh, did You keep an R8? What are Your thoughts about it in comparison to the R6ii. I’m just thinking about R8 as second camera for my R6ii. For example when I go somewhere with RF100-500 on R6ii I need something for vlogging too, I don’t want to change lenses in different conditions etc. and vlogging with just an iPhone somehow don’t convince me and not match the canon footage. So I’m still debating if just one camera is enough or I should use two cameras. 🤔
I probably won't be keeping my R8 long term, but my needs are different than most. R6II and R8 will match perfectly so they are a good combo.
Excellent! Thank you! One question beyond: If i record video in clog3 and then import into Adobe Premiere. The Video material is interpreted as Rec 709 not as clog3(!). So the automatic LOG interpretation from Premiere wont work. I have to manualy switch the video clips to clog3 in the characteristic Settings. Can you verify this? Bug or is there some R6M2 Settings that I dont set right?
You're welcome. Unfortunately I have not used Premiere Pro before so I can't help you out.
Josh regarding false colors if you donn't have a grey card and you want to expose for skin tone would go for the pink color on face or green? i
Everyone has a different skin tone so I avoid that technique. A gray card is like $10 and is very accurate.
Thanks for the video! I have a question. Is there a way to record in true 24p internally or externally? Thanks in advance 🙏🏻
You're welcome. Not on the R6II.
@@Josh_Sattin thanks for the update 🙏🏻
Hi Josh, is your canon R6 mark ii working with raveneye tracking on the DJI ronin RS2?
Unfortunately I have never used a Raven Eye. Looks pretty cool though.
40:11 you compare standard to clog3. You end up with a graded clog result that is much better than the standard profile. But can't you grade the standard profile too? You are suggesting there is likely less information there to grade, but that comparison - i'm guessing - would be a lot closer than expected. Standard is 10 bit as well correct?
BTW I left a reply here yesterday but it didn't show up. This video is perhaps the best tutorial on anything I've ever used. I kept coming up with questions while you were presenting and in almost every case they were answered just minutes later.
10 bit vs 8 bit has to do with the amount of possible colors that can be recorded. 10 bit having more possible colors than 8 bit. What shooting in log does is that the camera applies a logarithmic equation to the footage to capture more dynamic range, which you then have to grade afterwards. You can not capture the same amount of dynamic range with a standard profile.
So I guess 120fps would be good for b-roll?
Quick question though, is the 800 iso only native to Clog, or is it also the native iso in the canon color profiles?
Yes, 800 is the base ISO for Clog 3. The non log profiles have a lower base ISO.
Josh - maybe you said this and I missed it as I had to skip around some…. I always appreciate your content. I have a question for you that I have not been able to find anywhere else…. tomorrow I will getting a new Canon R6 Mk II - I would like to know the BASE ISO - I know there is a base on cinema cameras which make for optimal image results. I also know 1/3 increments ISO often show worse noise. But does this have an optimal ISO? If you know or can find the answer I would appreciate it. Could not find answer in on-line manual or Canon PDF specs list. Thanks
Base ISO is 800 for Clog 3.
@@Josh_Sattin Is there such a thing for still images also? If so, i’ve never heard of it.
I usually keep the ISO as low as I can when shooting photos. I think 100 is the base for photos.
Hi Josh, great video!
Have you tested the sigma 24-70 on this camera?
I'm between the rf 24-105 f4 and the tamron ef 24-70 g2 (which is similar to the sigma), what do you think?
Greetings from Argentina!
Another question, is 10bit recording only in Clog 3?
Hey martin! I just went trough your problema few months ago! Be aware that with the tamron 24-70 you wont have a powerful stabilization beautifull lens but for video not good if you are looking for a great stabilized lens. if you want the full 5 axis stabilization you have to ho with RF lens. not even the EF canon lens will give you the full 5 axis stabilization
Thanks! I have not used the Sigma 24-70 on the R6II, but I have used it on other cameras. I would personally go for the RF 24-105 over the Tamron. The RF 24-105 has a few things going for it. It is longer (105mm), smaller, lighter, native RF lens, best AF and stabilization. If you are willing to give up 2.8 for 4, then the RF 24-105 is a great choice.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks for the answers! The reality is that I am also interested in the lumix s5ii (or s5iix), what I would lose is the 4k60 without cropping of the R6ii, the rest really interests me a lot
And wait for canon to open its mount to sigma/tamron (which I hope will be soon)
do you have a photo settings guide for this camera?
Unfortunately I don't. I personally don't do much photography so I focus on video stuff on this channel.
All good! Thanks though :)@@Josh_Sattin
You've skipped video zoom and crop mode? Mentioning doesn't count ;)
Where do I find the Digital On option?
Press the Q button and go to the stabilization icon.
I have this exact camera. Why don’t I have canon log on mine?
They didn't put Clog (Canon Log) in this camera, just Clog3.
Thank you man.. Very helpful video!!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
Why do I not have c-log on my r6 mark ii?
I replied to your other comment.
Why do I only have 4k 50fps not 60?
You are in PAL mode. I cover that in this video.
Which section? I’ve watched it twice now 😢 newborn may not be helping my attention
I found
Ok I'm getting really frustrated. I don't have focus breathing either.
You need to be using a compatible lens with the firmware having been updated on the camera and the lenses. I made a video about it: th-cam.com/video/7ne933XWa_s/w-d-xo.html
Anyone else extremely frustrated that the “Set” button isnt centered…
Canon has huuuge omissions in operation... this "either or" display or recorder is insane! My old Nikon D750 had way better options...
