India is already by far the most populous country on the planet. According to the United Nations, more than 1.425 billion people live in India today, a figure that is expected to grow to almost 1.7 billion by the middle of the century.
India now aspires to become a political and economic superpower. However, the country still has many problems. Among them, one of the most rigid social stratification systems in the world: the Castes. A system that the government has been pursuing for decades, but which, nevertheless, still survives. In this video we tell you all the details.

hence put the division based on money. by this all others casts will atleast be united with all other ppl and will feel more united... hope ur understanding what im trying to say.... this mentality shud prevail in rural india where 70% population lives. otherwise ppl like and ppl like that upper caste fellow u mentioned will always fight each other destroying india just like how india was divided when british came. jai hind brother/sister.

Back when I was doing my internship in California, my supervisor who was a white, 40 year old 🇺🇸 American woman was married to this 40+ year old 🇮🇳 Indian man who was born a Dalit, his family emigrated to the 🇺🇸 US as a teenager and became relatively well off/upper middle class after moving to the States.
She told us a story of how years ago, when they (back when they were around 30 years old) traveled to India to visit his hometown and family, a lot of those upper caste people were shocked and a bit frustrated seeing a Dalit being well off and married to a white/American woman.
They married each other out of love but the other non-Dalits couldn't understand how a Dalit could end up rich (at least by Indian standards) and married to a white woman, with many of those higher caste people going up to her and demanding to know why she was married to a Dalit or asking if she knew that her husband was a Dalit (which she reply that she does know that but that it's not something that mattered to her).

Casteism varies from region to region, in some Indian states casteism is low, and in some casteism is high, much alike how race is prevalent in southern US more than it is the Northern states. Generally there's a group of people in India constituting to 20% of the population, who barely survive, their children go to school for a meal, and drop out from school before 14, not because of money, but for need of work, destroying the talent prior fruition. If you look closely you'll find casteism is associated with poverty, and historically most of the untouchables were exempt from the society, implying that these people were once in power and then subjugated and reduced to such state by the ones who came after and became kings. Example of this is the Nandas who had an empire but were vanquished by the Mauryas and every source you find calls them 'low born'. How can an emperor be low born?

The fight against racism in the US - where I live - is a long history, but generally it has made progress in society. I fail to understand how Dalit political mobilisation gave rise to Modi. Not everything has to loop back to him.
Also, I'd usually be the last person to defend the guy, but there are reasons behind his popularity that go beyond Hindu majoritarianism. He has utilized his party's domination in Parliament to push forward numerous reforms, which do include anti-Muslim elements but also welfare-oriented and rural-centric development projects. A villager who now has a running water connection and a toilet near his home for the women in his family is likely to ignore the repression of Muslims and vote for Modi, but that doesn't make him a Hindu Nationalist.

Unfortunately by far the largest of these has been the religion introduced by the Mogul empires, which has serious disadvantages in terms of violence and broader societal divisiveness. As an "African-American" male I know that if I go to an interview with an Indian male in some form of power role, I will not get that job. I assumed it was maybe caste related, that by being black was even below their caste system but I also factored into consideration that most people are tribal when it comes to accepting people into their groups and whatnot. Even among white people I have a pretty good track record for getting a job, mostly by mentioning that I was veteran of the Gulf war. When I learned of the caste system I would ask an Indian coworker about it but learned that no one wanted to talk about it, I assumed that the people I asked had benefitted from it and thus didn't want to talk about it? Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but the caste system is based in the Hindu religion. If you live a good life, you'll get reincarnated in the higher cast, if you live a bad life, you'll end up in the lower. So basically it's the Hindu equivalent of heaven and hell, just a bit more sophisticated. So as long Hindu religion is going strong in India, there will be castes. The same as you can not have Christianity without Heaven and Hell, or Islam without Jannah and Jahannam, you can not have Hinduism without casts.

Just look at 2023 - the most powerful Indian Politican is from the "Backward castes". The main leader of the Opposition in Parliament is from the Untouchable Caste/Dalit. The current President and the previous President were from tribal and untouchables castes respectively. Nearly half of all engineering, medicine, civil service and graduate enrollment is reserved for disadvantaged castes. Many untouchables have moved up the class hierarchy. While there are lots of Upper castes who are struggling to move up the financial hierarchy and are stagnating due to the scale of the caste based quota system.

When discussing discrimintion you shouldn't forget cultural and social inheritance. Even if there's no formal discrimination, a higher social status might be related to having parents with academic background or political/professional connections. It's hard to accumulate all the knowledge you need in time to make the right choices and in most cases, it really helps with a couple of shoulders to stand on. This is true even in the west (political dynasties but also the enduring poverty of certain minorites).
And you can't really outlaw this, everyone should have the right to help their children put their best foot forward in life. But this also means people from disadvantaged groups may need multiple generations in order to generate the same cultural/social inheritance as more established groups.

I would like to offer some light on this topic, so please bear with me.
As a person who is labeled as someone belonging to a lower caste by the society I have a some opinions and thoughts on this matter. Ever since childhood I've been constantly reminded that I belong to a particular caste. It didn't matter until I was in middle school when I started to notice the difference in behavior of people. FYI for the most part I've never faced any caste discrimination towards me, or at least that I know of (FYI I'd consider myself a tiny bit privileged in terms of economic aspect, which in turn dictates much of my social exposure, but that wealth isn't a product of generational wealth). But I've seen my father struggle in his job and other social aspects. Many people today don't care about caste until the matter of inter-caste marriage is brought to the table. You wouldn't believe but people who have the highest education you can get in this country still has that regressive social ideologies.
Coming to the solution part of this topic. There isn't any easy solution. The situation today is you can find someone belonging to any caste who is poor and socially backwards these days. By socially backwards I mean is lack of education and opportunities. Gone are the days of large families taking care of every distant cousins and all. Nowadays everyone cares about their own nuclear family and hence you would notice people belonging to higher caste with wealthy relatives also abandoning them and hence the social backwardness.
The idea of all political parties and most people is let everything stay as it is. Since it would take a large amount of grit to cure the society of this evil (many still don't see anything wrong with the castes).
First of all we will have to invest heavily in education and make it affordable if not free till university. Second build more schools and universities and ban any school or education systems who cater to a particular community of people. Promote diversity starting from school. Keep strict rules for teachers and professors to end discriminating towards students and teachers of different caste, race or community. The main discontent with the quota or reservation system from general caste people is that they feel cheated when someone who scores less gets admitted to a reputable university or school. If there are enough quality education institutes people won't feel the discontent since everyone will get same high quality education. Keep a fixed quota for economically backward students, this will be hard since forgery is still a big issue in India. Keep a fixed quota for socially backward students (caste, creed, religion minorities, tribes, etc). Then every 10 years perform a survey to check the percentage of people who are socially and economically backwards. Adjust the quota depending on the situation. This will be hard but I think people will accept this solution if done without any corruption or malice. We can invest in education we just choose not to. It might not seem profitable at first but it'll be an investment towards guaranteeing a better society. This is, what I feel, the easy solution. In the end if the caste would stop having meaning (or benefits) to the people they'll abandon it. A harsh solution would be to strip last name from everyone, but I think everyone will be pretty pissed at that idea.
In the end it's going to be tough to change anything since caste is so closely associated with religion, and I don't just mean Hinduism. Even Muslims still believe in castes.
There is a famous quote by Narendra Jadhav in Marathi. "Jaat hi ashi goshta ahe ji jaat nahi". It translates to "Caste is that thing which doesn't go away".

Atleast in west, there's not reservation and they values talent unlike our castist india where caste>>>>intellect....

USA and Europe had much bigger problem of racism. USA doesn't give this much insane reservation to african americans.
First go and search the admission criteria of multiple American institute. None of the top institute like mit have reservations nor Google, or apple have reservations for jobs cuz they need talent not garbage caste certificate.
Wese toh kafi institutions mein musalmano, isai aur Sikh students ke liye reservation hota hi hai including some of the top universities of India. Hum general logo ne sach mein yeh desh mein koi gunah kiya hai kya? General ka sirf 20% population hai aur Brahmins ka 5% population.. baki sab toh OBC, St,sc ka hi population hai. I'm a Brahmin and I'm from a very middle class family. Some of the ultra rich people in my colony are ST. They do get reservation And even financial exemption and scholarship. Even a muslim or a Christian would get a financial exemption because of OBC... While we general get absolute nothing no matter how poor we are.. Brahmins are represented as oppressors in all of media including international media. While the fact is that today prime minister Modi is OBC and president is ST.. but still Brahmins are oppressors for every indians? This is the reason majority people who migrate to West are from general caste cuz we do know what struggle is not one who live through the lobby of reservation. No country in the world including united states has so much reservation like India has... Reservation is eating away India. A poor general caste die in india every day. Khair problems toh sirf obc ,sc,st ka hi hota hai. General caste mein bhi kitna gareeb hota hai Lekin kisko kya farak padta hai. It's better for we general caste people to migrate in Western countries. Atleast there our surnames would not be a barrier From achieving our dreams.
Mein middle class family se belong krta hu. Aur mere colony ke Ultra rich log ST. Zyada tar hamare town ke doctors ST hai. Humko kya pta kon dalit kon obc. This is completely false and seems no one even tried hard enough to research for the video, You just didn't talk about reservation, the IITs entrance exam, the general students have to score nearly twice to get the admission compared to backward or lower class students. Same goes for nearly all the government jobs and examinations. The prime minister of the nation is from a backward class (who's basically an ideal for millions here), the president is of a lower class. The guy said 3/4th are untouchables really? So called untouchables were not even 5% of the population. I have lived a long life in Rural India and I can proudly say that these caste issues are nearly eradicated. Yes, there are many instances of such cases but that happens generally with old and uneducated individuals. This video is not at all accurate. Upper caste people cannot really know the reality of discrimination. We have never faced discrimination on the basis of caste. Only Dalits can tell you about the horrific reality of discrimination in India.

The perception of the caste system in India is a Western idea (actually a Middle Eastern concept of a society that migrated to India). The Indigenous communities had community-based systems ex. Tamil society from its ancient times (2000BC at least on record) had divisions of lands as five different biomes (thinai), 1 Kurinji (Forest) 2 Palai (Desert), 3 Mullai (mountainous), 4 Marutam (Agricultural field and plains), 5 Neital (Coastal) and people were classified to these 5 major biomes and accordingly, their lifestyle based on their occupational choices. The community system allowed people to be in any occupation and switch from the occupation done by their parents and also had full flexibility to move to a different biome. This flexibility allowed each community to migrate to any part of the Tamil kingdom or even migrate to other Tamil kingdoms. When the caste system was brought in by the Western communities from the Middle East (sometimes referred to as the Aryan invasion) into the Indian continent they first associated themself with the rulers who also had invaded India from the Middle East and then created new religions and languages (Sanskrit - an Indo European language), they turned the community (flat system) to the caste system (pyramid-shaped) and self-claimed themself to be on the top of the Pyramid. Also, they locked the flexibility of a person moving from one community to another community - and made sure a person born into a family inherits the father's profession so that the top of the pyramid stays at the top forever. This is the significant difference between community system of ancient India vs. the caste system. The changes from the community-based Indian society to a rigid caste-based society happened just before the invasion of colonial invasion of European countries. By the 14th century, all the Tamil Kingdoms were wiped off the Indian map by North Indian Sultans or by Telugu Kingdoms that accepted Sanskritization completely into their language and culture. British, French, Dutch, Portuguese, and others only reached India by sea after the community system had been replaced by the caste system and they didn't understand the historical perspective and migration that happened from the Middle East through landmass from the west.

@@script_na this is absolutely untrue. The state support for lower caste is applicable from jobs reservation to reservation in topmost institutes and schools of the country. The state passed bills like sc/st act, which entails non bailable jail if a person from a lower caste even accuses (without evidence) of discrimination. This is also the reason caste system exists i.e. the beneficiaries are rich lower castes. For eg the video reference IIT graduates, the cutoff for general class is 99%ile, same for lower caste is 50-70%ile. Is that not unfair and discriminatory? It doesn’t even help the poor low caste as the seats are taken by those whose families have already benefitted.

Look into the raise of conversions to Christianity. A good majority of people are from so-called lower castes, evading the oppression from the system.
In other countries such as USA economic prosperity/wartime building drove people from various backgrounds to work together. For example, the Second World War introduced a lot of women into the workforce. The same can be noticed in India too... In cities, you can see the reduced impact of the system, where what you can sell matters more than anything. As you go more toward rural areas, the presence of the system can be felt. We have an oversupply of labor and it doesn't necessitate any reorientation of the system.
The caste system was documented to have existed long before the British colonization. However, they managed to keep the disparities to fit their model of making the country a market for their factory-made goods.
To be fair, this started as a system to transfer knowledge/craftmanship from one generation to another. The economic value of each service exacerbated the difference giving more leverage to certain people for a long time.
21st-century political activism has been both good and bad for the system. It gave voice to the people oppressed, while also keeping the system reinvigorating itself. The political weight of a collective bunch of people is higher than an individual and that is being achieved through caste.
Overall, this video had to be short & simplified, and also limited by what they understood. Each point of view differs.

The caste system cause a massive social & economic gap between the lower caste and the higher caste. The Hindu kingdoms in Indonesia allowed the non-Hindu to live outside the caste system so the lower caste who want a higher economic & social freedom convert to other religion.

Humans have usually evolved to live and behave in ways that are extremely beneficial to some and extremely harmful to others. They tend to organized themselves in hierarchies such as caste and class systems or political parties and even into criminal gangs and the lower on the hierarchy they are the less rights they have and the more likely they are to suffer abuse and discrimination from the those above them in the hierarchy. They also compete for wealth, status and power often with little regard for human life especially toward the more primeval or toward those from a other races but even within their own race by creating hierarchies and ranking themselves in the hierarchy.

Not that I think Islam or Christianity or Judaism is any better but, the major religion of India is Hinduism which is much older than Islam and much older than Christianity and although all religions organize their followers into hierarchies from slaves to kings and queens, Hinduism has done this and documented this in their literature much better than other religions.
Please correct me if I got this wrong but according to the literature, you can only move up to a higher caste after you die. If you lived by the caste system rules and were honest and did the work that your caste was assigned to do and did not commit crimes and where successful in life and helped others to succeed, after you die, you can be reincarnated into a higher caste. You can keep being reincarnated to a higher caste until you rich the top caste, the Brahmins, and if you are a successful Brahmin, you can then be reincarnated into a god. If you lived a life of crime, you will be reincarnated to a lower caste and you can try again to live a life that will allow you to be reincarnated to a higher caste.
Humans have an amazing talent to tell fascinating stories with villains and heroes that have supernatural and magical powers and they also have an equal amazing ability or, should I say weakness, to believe these stories but if you are taught this from birth it is very difficult to realize it is just about all fiction and is done mostly for political purposes so that some people can control and be served by other people.
Religions are master storytellers where they make you believe that there are magical authorities that live in the sky that can reward you for following their rules or punish you if you do not follow their rules. Making you believe that the magical authorities created some people to be servants is a great strategy for these story tellers to live a privileged life since they were created to be served.
Whether its Christianity, Islam and Judaism or Hinduism people are not going to just stop promoting and preaching this non-sense any time soon. Unfortunately, people are not going to stop believing this non-sense any time soon. There may be some short term benefits in believing fiction or fake information but in the long run, I think it is always better to know what is fiction and what the facts are. This is why humans need to have the skills, knowledge and ability to separate facts from fiction and the educational system needs to put a priority in teaching how to do this with dedicated courses and subjects starting in elementary schools.
Leaders of all the major religions need to start understanding this and start to admit and recognize that their past thinking of teaching and presenting fiction as real events from the past is not the best way to promote and teach morality. There can be a “way out” or an “off ramp” from this way of thinking. The organizations, assets, leaders and members that make a living working and promoting their religion’s ideas and stories do not need to be eliminated. They can be transitioned and combined into the educational systems and their assets into historical museums and libraries. Their fascinating stories and literature are well written by some of the most intelligent and enlightened thinkers of the past and can continue to be used as learning tools but they need to be recognized as fiction. All religious leaders need to recognize and stop pretending that the stories are real. There may be some truth in the accounts of the events in religious literature but these events can be studied and debated similar to how other historical events are studied.
This cannot be accomplished without the understanding and support of the religious organizations and their leaders along with our wealthiest and smartest and brightest among us. I will admit that humans may not be able to achieve this type of progress. Religious beliefs especially ones that have been around for at least 5000 years will be a hard nut to crack but, we have to start talking about it and start presenting these ideas. Continuing to making up stories about magical authorities with supernatural powers that live in the sky and how these authorities think a caste system is a good and moral way to organize a society is not helpful.

There's a reason Uganda kicked Indians off their country in 1972. Ugandans don't want to be treated like second class citizens their own country. Some critics are going to say that Ugandas economy collapsed after the explusion. So? It's better to be poor than to live under the Hindu caste system. No amount of money will ever justify marginalization in your own country. Now, there's cases in America where east Indians perpetrate the caste system against darker skin Indians. Restricting them from economic opportunities to outright social exclusion. The analysis completely sidesteps a MAJOR aspect of the caste system, religion. The caste system is intrinsically linked to Hinduism and has been from the very start. And India is a highly religious country, the customs and traditions are all deeply intertwined with social stratification. It's really religion that upholds the caste system, and you may be able to manage its legal status but its social status will never fade until there is religious reform, which will never come because of the deep rooted religiosity of most Indians, further worsened by a ruling government whose entire political legacy is that of advancing a Hindu-populist agenda.

I am really shocked that you claim there was no "religious reform" in Hinduism, in fact most of the civil bills brought in India are predominantly aimed towards Hindu individuals. Most of social debates and policies are aimed at brewing a discussion on hindu religious reforms, and it has mostly been taken up in a pretty healthy way in Hindu society. In fact, we are yet to see a religious reform in say Muslim religious narrative especially in India, any discussion on Muslim scriptures is not at all welcomed by Muslim clerics, any debates on Muslim caste system is again not welcomed by Muslim clerics and upper class families.
Also, hindu-populist agenda which you are referring to is against the caste hierarchy and in fact this very hindu-populist ideology of current govt. brought a non jat cheif minister in Haryana, non-maratha cheif minister in Maharashtra. A populist party won't do that, in fact a populist party would do the exact opposite.
