3D Printer Filament Storage Options and Why They Are Needed

  • Now its time to talk about 3d printer storage options and why we actually need to store our filament when it's not in use. Most of the commonly used filaments this hobby are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air. This can cause many issues including weekend filament, jammed print heads, low-quality prints, reduce filament lifespan, etc.
    In this video, I'm going to cover the more common storage options available including some pros and cons of each plus I will go over how I store my filament.

      all silica is reusable, just bake it on low in the oven to drive out the water
      silica cat litter is dirt cheap, scoop some into a stocking and tie a knot or paper bag and staple shut

    VACUUM SEALER BAG REUSE: If you are going to use a vacuum sealer bag, get the cut-to-length bag refills. They are actually one continuous tube and you seal the end before loading it up. This allows you to make the bag 6 inches longer than you need it to be. That way you can use it a dozen or so times just cutting off the ~3/8 inch of the seal each time.

      Hi. Thanks for the feedback. I think the ziplock bag along with the Silica gel packets work great in most cases and cost next to nothing. I added a link to the filament that I use the most in the description above. I have some Amazon Basics filament in this video because I was printing masks and just used what I could get.

    Your box looks like the IRIS Weathertight storage box that you can find at a few different stores. What is the size of the box your using? It looks like you could fit about 4 spools per box?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. Any Weathertight storage box would work. I'm using a19 Quart one (dimensions are 11.75 x 17.5 x 7.88 inches) and can get about four spools in it.

    How long can you store filament in a zip lock bag with the silica gel if you have filament you don't use much? Would you need to replace the silica gel after a year or so?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. I think the longest I have stored filament in a ziplock was about six months. If I think it will go beyond that, I will vacuum seal it. You can probably get longer if you use good ziplocks that seal properly. As far as the silica gel goes, it can only absorb so much moisture. If it's new and put into an airtight bag it should last for a long time, but its hard to say how long unless you get the color-changing ones.

    is the vacuum sealer really that loud or is it just close to the mic?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi. It’s a mix of both. It is really loud and was about 5ft from the mic. I thought about removing the sound there but I didn’t want people to think the process was quite or anything like that.

    Hey, How long does filament last once exposed to air? A 65-70 degree room in winter, or hot humid summer weather?

    • @3DPrintscape
      @3DPrintscape  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi. It really depends on the type and the humidity levels. PLA can last months, others that are more sensitive, like silk/nylon, could be days.
