The calculator app was low key the main event
Yeah I cannot tell you how much I've wanted it. I thought of it long ago and even paid for an app that supposedly did the same thing but it was a waste and it didn't do it nicely. If this works like they say, it will truly be a game changer. I'm studying math stuff and I use my iPad allll the time for calculations

Type to Siri was technically a feature before iOS 18 - it's just hidden away in Accessibility settings.
Almost 60% or even 70% of iPhone users don't know this.....they don't have the habit of tweaking their phones to see such.
Type to Siri was technically a feature without doing that. If you asked Siri a prompt, you could then edit the prompt to whatever you wanted.

The cool thing about the Icon Color thing is that it works on ALL icons out of the box. My one plus phone also had a feature exactly like this, but a bunch of third party apps didn’t work with it so it was basically useless

1:12 just want to note that typing to Siri was already possible. You can set the side button (power button) to type to Siri instead of speak to it.

Accessibility settings are the real GOAT. I use so many features there. A simple one is reduce white point to make the screen dimmer. Live captions for videos, speech controller/speak screen for TTS, etc.
gotta say i’m really glad you can get rid of the pages in the control center, i really don’t like having more swipes and not being able to swipe it away from anywhere. installed the beta and can confirm you can get rid of the other pages (or add more if you like them) and swipe it away just like before

Apple is all about minimalism. The thing is that it’s really hard to put in a bazillion features whilst remaining minimalist. Which is one of the reason they tend to be slower, but when they do add it it’s always of a never seen before quality. Works on launch, perfectly integrates in the ecosystem, often go about it in very clever ways and add never seen before. Like the calculator app too a long time, but if they added it a long time ago they probably wouldn’t have added these cool features to go with it

The satellite messaging is a HUGE deal to me. I do a lot of backpacking, backcountry skiing, and a lot of other off-the-grid outdoor activities. For emergencies, I carry a Garmin Inreach sattelite communicator that costs $300, and have to pay at least $15/month to get 10 messages/month on it. Unlimited messaging costs $65/month. Having this functionality on my phone would be huge and save me a lot of money without compromising on safety measures.
I have a server set up at home for a couple of hobby projects, so while watching this video I set up a quick python script to send weather data to my phone over sms. Yep, unless Garmin does something to their business model, time is ticking for the inreach.
Satelite messaging works on the iPhone but the Garmin Inreach does have a much beter antenna for satellite communications. Something to keep in mind. Also the Inreach is rugged and can (and should) be clipped where you can easily reach it when you fall. If you have a phone in your backpack and you are halfway down a cliff you probably can't grab it.
what makes you think that apple wont also put a monthly subscription on Sat messages?
Please don't replace your Garmin for you iPhone, i know it alluring to save money but the iPhone sat messages are not robust enough to be used in every emergency
Got rid of my InReach the minute Apple announced the satellite feature last year. Glad I sold it before it becomes obsolete.
replacing an InReach for a phone while not compromision on safety measures? dude I do hiking and that phrase make NO sense at all. The InReach is more rugged, has a better antena and a better battery than any phone. If you change it for an iPhone you are compromising your safety quite a lot.

Universal back button on iOS 21
Well the thing with the calculator has a really long history. There originally was one that looked like the one on iPhones just bigger. Steve Jobs hated it and said that they should redesign it and has shot down everything they have done until they ultimately gave up and of course he died. Ever since then they never wanted to make one unless it would be perfect for the iPad and not just a scaled version of the app for the iPhones.

1:22 as someone with a stutter, this has been a major issue for me and I'm happy to hear it'll be better to use now.
This used to be an issue with Alexa until they released an update that made it worlds better to use and now I use it every day.

Hiding and locking apps are super cool features! Very happy to see this kind of stuff!
App icon arrangement will be really handy. They change the grid spacing on the iPad and it made a whole row get lost in the shifted everything around then they quietly that tweaked that the next update. Meanwhile on Mac OS X you can set the grid spacing to anything you want which is why it's really annoying for an OS that's based off of Mac OS X under the hood.
For the record, that "Shazam but for video" was done by Amazon first with X-ray for Amazon Prime.

You could already type to siri. But they made it enabled by default now.
Well I'm a recent iPhone user (3 years), but i think every big feature in iOS is just a boosted and refined previous accessibility feature.

@@jronmantech In the settings (I don't have my phone with me so bare with me), there are a couple of Siri settings I remember. One is the ability to activate it by holding the power button, and the other is, when it's activated, it will pop up a text bar that you can type your commands to.
Typing to old siri will be nothing like typing to New siri. New siri is actually going to seem more like a person and not like an automated telephone representative...

Small feature, but the 21:9 aspect ratio support is going to be great for AV Integrators
I work in mainly residential settings and have done a few cinemas over the years and have had to use external video processors as a baseline. This has the opportunity to simplify a ton of installs, especially with newer hdmi features allowing vrr and seamless colour space switching

Honestly, love that tint feature. makes me want to find an equivalent for my android that works as universally.
Android (at least on stock and Pixels) has had Material You since Android 12 and that can also apply to icons if you enable it. It comes down to the app developer making an icon that supports it though, most do, but older apps or some that seem to just refuse to for whatever reason (like Netflix).

I'm not someone who will ever have a need for the feature, but the math notes thing they showed off just looked so cool and impressive to me. Would've been such a huge game changer if I had that while in school, because visualizing graph changes that easily would've made learning a WAY faster process.

t9 dialing is basically how you used to have to text back in the pre-smart phone/phone with a keyboard days and you still have to dial phone numbers this way outside of a basic search for the phone number for a business or using you contact list.

There is one quality of life thing that I dont understand why apple doesn't implement; The ability to skip songs with the volume buttons. I have the sound assistant app on my s23, and back when I had a OnePlus it was an on by default. It is such a game changer when you are just walking with your phone in your hand and dont want to lift your hand to the earphones, or turn on the screen. It is so seamless and apple-ish thing that I would've expect to see a long time ago
Had an idea for a show: 3d print a pc case for a desktop , you could even post the design so people could tweak it. it would be an open source desktop literally.

I believe Type to Siri has been a feature for quite some time, it’s been in accessibility in settings until iOS 18 if I’m not mistaken.

Upgraded to a 15 PM from a 11 PM and I couldn’t be more happier , this phone is so nice ! Running iOS 18 on developer beta and it’s really smooth . Cant wait for the rest of the features to drop !

@@iLeetProductions you can do pretty much all of this on android, but you're either gonna have to install sketchy apps, have to set it up manually yourself with something like Tasker, or you're going to have to root your phone.
To be fair to Apple, you could also do a lot of this stuff on a jailbroken iPhone, including the color tones of all the app icons 😂
@@snowe.. Actually recently Samsung partied up with Google again and added a bunch of AI features to the galaxy, fold and flip series. However... they kinda busted OneUI and my phone has been kinda funky recently. And I don't know if it goes quite as far as Apple does but thats something Apple has always done better~ when they hone in on a system/functionality, they usually perform it better and more thoroughly than android does.

And yeah that’s really how it goes with apple and android. Android is always first but Apple _usually_ does it best. When they finally decide to actually implement it at least…

Honestly one of the biggest parts of the update for me is changing the little icons on the lock screen. Why do I need to press a button to open the camera when I can just swipe?
What I wish for Siri is to make it Bilingual. My parents’ English is not the fluid, so they stumble a bit when talking to Siri. So having Siri understand you in multiple languages simultaneously would help.

choosing which contact an app can see, you can create a throwaway contact for those apps who require to see contacts but you wont give them anything u dont want
As someone who currently is using, Siri, Siri is the most inconvenient inconsistent assistant I have ever used. Hopefully whatever they push fixes it. Half the time it doesn’t hear me call it, and the other half it doesn’t even hear what I say. then when it does hear what I say it either doesn’t listen correctly or it gives me something completely unrelated. Three out of 10 times I get what I ask for
A surprising amount of these were on windows already, but the remote access feature does looks pretty cool!

Great! Tech finally evolved to take us ahead of guessing if people are talking to you, or to themselves, or to invisible phone, on to now let them *greet you with a nod* _before_ talking, making you *more sure* it's to you when it's not.
The number of people saying "type to Siri has been a thing for ages in accessibility settings" is ridiculous. You dont get it.... Before you had to choose if you want type to Siri OR talk to Siri. Now you get both. You can hold the power button or say "Siri" to talk OR you can double tap the home bar to type to Siri. With the old accessibility setting if you turned on type to Siri you completely lost the ability to talk to Siri other than voice to text through the keyboard. So no, this is not the same *facepalm*.

Considering I have a Bluetooth that can connect to multiple devices at the same time yeah I've been wanting this for a while. Especially because I go out in public and I'm playing something on my device and then I can't disconnect it from whatever device has connected to my Bluetooth and is now playing a second audio over my audio. Also just you know don't want people to see my devices pop up near them if I'm not comfortable in that location having other people see it such as you know maybe at a apartment complex or neighborhood where you don't trust the neighbors or where you do trust the neighbors but also know that they're going to pull pranks on you so you know...
that satellite texting thing is lowkey gonna save lives i think.
It already has saved a lot of lives but before it was just for emergencies and car breakdowns, now you can just text your friends while you are in the wilderness. Apple is flexing.
