  • This is the best way to store 3d printer filament. A weather-tight container and a rechargeable dehumidifier is all you need to keep all your filament dry and organized.

    I didn't even know these dehumidifiers existed. You are a prince among men.

      Or... buy bulk desicant. When it changes color... oven.

    I recommend opening all the bags the filaments are in. Can't 100% be sure those are dry inside the bags. I have ran through some bad batches from even the best companies.

      That's a good point. We already have a dry container, might as well open the bags to entire the roll is dry.

      I just dry the spool once I open the package. Opening the spool before you need it is just exposing it to the air unnecessarily.
      Also, weigh your spool and write the weight on it. Then when it's low, you can weigh it again and tell how much you've used up.

    I used to do that, but I change colors/spools in the printer so often that the "dry box" was never dry, since I kept opening it up and letting moist air into the box. Now, I keep each spool in a gallon size ZipLoc Freezer bag with a sachet of orange/green color changing dessicant. I check the bags for holes any time I use that color, as well as the dessicant color. If the bag and dessicant are good, I put the previous spool into that bag, or when I'm done printing, I put that spool back. If the dessicant has changed color, I put it aside to be recharged in my dehydrator later. If the bag has holes, I replace it, and repurpose the compromised bag as packing material for shipping orders. Speaking of which, I save bubble wrap from any shipment I receive, as well as clean plastic bags of all kinds. Along with recycled paper, I always have plenty of packing material on hand for shipments.

      Thanks for sharing your method! I have always been curious how much opening/closing affects it. The rechargeable dehumidifier seems to do a good job of keeping up, but I also don't swap filament daily, etc. Another comment mentioned using a hygrometer to measure humidity, so that might be an upcoming test I run.

      For 15 bucks the dehumidifier is well worth its cost and effort. a few hours humidity would be right back down to good levels.

    I put my filament roles i a used and cleaned 5 gallon paint bucket( they have a gasket seal) and the same Eva dry. I also add in a cheap hygrometer so I know when to dry out the desiccant. And it reusing those old paint buckets.

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, a hygrometer is a good idea. Its hard to see the eva-dry color through the frosted plastic (or the solid paint bucket in your case). I normally check when I pull a roll out of the box, but I can see a hydrometer being helpful when I don't happen to use rolls out of a specific box for a while. Looks like I have another thing to look into.

      @RonnieB223 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't do this yet for filament but to add here... YoLink makes smart hygrometers/thermometers that you can check or get alerts for via the app if they hit certain levels.

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RonnieB223 Good suggestion. I purchased some SwitchBot smart hydrometers/thermometers, and I'm currently running some experiments with the storage boxes to see how well the dehumidifers work, how they respond after the lids are opened, etc. So expect a follow up video about that data soon!

    I have a clear air and moisture tight tote that I have a bag of Damp Rid in that I plan to store my filament. I also have a thermometer/hygrometer that I plan to use. I came to this video looking to see how you are organizing the filament in the tote. Turns out you are just throwing it in there. I guess I'll just do something similar. My house doesn't get too humid, so I don't need to worry about really wet, but if I have a lot of filament now. If I notice a lot of wetness related issues, I might get a dryer or a dehydrator so I can get some of the moisture out of some of my older spools prior to using them. I have some old spools I want to use.

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, nothing special when it comes to per-box organization. I do use www.3dprintlog.com to keep track of all my filament, so I know exactly which box the spool I want is in. That's enough organization for my little home shop.

      @@HoffmanEngineering My computer room/3D printing room is no bigger than a California King mattress + a closet and doorway. I don't have much room to store filament, so I just have one giant tote in the corner of my room between my desk and the wall. Works well for me. Like I said, I wanted to see if there was some special way to organize the filament inside the tote box, but I guess I'll have to come up with my own way, like throwing it in there so it fits. Thinking about it, my tote box is so big that it could cause moisture ingress from opening and closing too many times, so if I notice issues, I might switch to a couple cheap smaller containers instead.

    Do you have a humidity sensor I there? I have this but can't get below 34%. Sounds like I need to use the oven first and then throw it in the container.

    I keep all of my filaments tracked in octoprint instead which automatically keeps track of the usage as well. Is there any advantage of 3dprintlog over just using octoprint here? At first glance it seems like extra unneeded complexity to me

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Octoprint's filament plugin is great if you have a single printer, but if you have multiple printers, or printers not connected with octoprint, then that's where 3dprintlog's filament tracking shines. You can keep track of multiple printers and filament without needing to spin up your own postgres database.

    Sealed containers with heat type dehumidifiers won’t do anything. This type of dehumidification only works in containers with small air gaps for the moisture to escape. Specifically they were designed for safes that are not weather tight.
    They do nothing in a weather tight volume.

    • @HoffmanEngineering
      @HoffmanEngineering  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Good point. These are not heat type dehumidifiers though. These are moisture absorbing dessicant, and when full you take them out of the container and use the external heater to drive out the absorbed moisture.
