Not an electric truck. The internal combustion is a very mature technology and it works very well. I can rev the engine and get more power without worrying that as the charge in electric gets low, I can’t get full power. With an IC engine, if I have only one galleon of gasoline left or even half a galleon I can drive the truck at full power til gasoline is used up.

I'd be interested in a transmission that doesn't give problems at 30k, is this the same 8 speed tranny of the last 5 years or so? the one with all the law suits against it?
I wouldn't have any EV if they gave it to me for free.. I'm not buying into the EV hype.

It's funny how critical people are about trucks and vehicles today. I didn't know we needed all the features and soft touch materials to go from point A to point B.

More profit. I mean sure it should be nicer than a 90's Hyundai but it's still a truck. Hence you see the starting price for a work truck is $30k. It should be $20k with less fluff.

That's why I'm aiming to get the Trailboss. It comes with everything that I want for around 45k. Sure it may not have the nice interior like the Z71. But with 430 lb-ft of tq from the optional tune and 7700 lbs of towing it should be a good truck. A comparable Z71 is about 8k more than the Trailboss that I built.
@kevin12697 the problem is, people expect to get the nicest things on the lower trim models, and still pay the lower trim model prices. If those people trying to barbie their car up for comfort want to do it.... fine, let them. But pay those higher prices. Stop complaining about how everything you want should come standard. That's now how it works.

All the rage is about the bling. Most important features for a truck are reliability, utility, seat comfort and fuel economy.
My three are reasonable size, towing power, and looks. I want rugged off-road capable looks. This Colorado is best in those regards.

Agreed! I love that the Tacoma is super reliable and has a great resale value... But that's kind of where the hype ends. It's way down on power, even the top TRD PRO was outperformed offroad by the old model Colorado ZR2, it doesn't have best in class towing, the interior is straight out of 2006, and the stupid transmission is always searching for a fucking gear. My father has one he purchased for a work truck (we co-own a machine and fab shop together) and I have used it a handful of times to run and get things and it has terrible ride quality and the interior sucks to be in, seats are uncomfortable, and I just don't like it. The ONLY reasons he purchased it was because how reliable they are and the good resale value.
I work for Metalsa in Hopkinsville KY where we manufacture the truck frames for the Colorado. Orders for 2023 are thru the roof.

Chevy hit a "home run" with the new Colorado and canyon....
This new Colorado looks awesome, although I disagree with the criticism of the outgoing model... it easily had the best interior of anything in the midsize segment, in both space and comfort, as well as overall mix of utility and daily driver quality. Yes, the tech did well with a refresh on the '23, but for the majority of time it was on the market, the tech in the previous generation was very adequate. I just picked up a '23 Sierra loaded to the gills, but I did it for the extra space due to growing family, my '17 Colorado has been a fantastic truck and I would still drive it if I could afford to keep both.
The older generation 2012s and older had engine problems and I've herd the frames fold and break ti easily....weak frames from what I hear
Never thought I would like a mid-size truck until I saw the redesigned 2023 Colorado, the older versions of the Colorado lacked any excitement inside and out, especially not having push start or the option of a sunroof. I like the redesigned 2023 Colorado so much; I placed a custom order for a Z71 and hopefully it arrives soon!

I'm looking at a 2017 used colorado z71.....first 2 generations up to the 2012s had weak frames and engines issues...also fairly fuel economy for 5cyl smaller trucks
Their are no Z71s for 41k,, I ordered the insulation for the inside of my hood to help with noise for my Trail Boss, also got the 430# torque calibration!

I like the Trail boss, just wish the lights were LED, how are they not standard yet? I feel they're more of a safety item than most of the offered safety features. Or hopefully they'll offer the leveling kit as a dealer add on so you can slap it on the Z/71

@@UltraSS-nj8kd Not everyone wants to go offroad regularly. I have a leveling kit on my 22 Silverado 2500 just so I can get a slightly larger tire. I only go offroad when I am hunting but having slightly better clearance and a slightly larger all terrain tire makes it easier to get into some of the places we go hunting. I have a Polaris RZR and a Honda Talon if I want to go into really gnarly places, I'm not taking my $70,000 truck bouncing around on the trails. The leveling kit also comes in handy when I am plowing snow, living where we get 12ft-14ft of snow every year i tend to have to push the snowbanks back further. Snow gets up under your truck as the plow rides up a snow bank and you can easily get stuck. Having a little more clearance and a larger studded snow tire means I'll spend less time winching myself out of a snowbank or shoveling endlessly. Point is, there's many reasons to want a truck to be slightly higher. Also, people like what they like so even if it is only for the "look" then who cares.
I like it but do have to agree with some others who feel like trucks don’t have to feel like cars. Nothing wrong in my mind to a base pickup feeling cheap if it’s durable and simple for those who just need the work aspect of the vehicle.
This is what makes the Trail Boss so good.
Simple, durable and $20k. But no profit to be had.
Critics are the loudest but if you actually look at the average pick up truck buyer, they buy a truck as a family car and they want features and comfort. The bed is just there for couple times a year to move a piece of furniture or mulch.
@@kamilb8232 oh absolutely, the OEMs know that demographic is the majority of the segment, I just feel there is a not-insignificant portion that has traditionally relied on this type of vehicle and those within it are losing their influence over how the vehicle is designed and built. I'd love to see both approaches like in years past, but i think in this day and age that is a tall order.

I did not know the built in Google system could turn on functionality! Even more happy I ordered a nitro yellow z71 with most of the options except for sun roof if it didn't cost 1200 I would have though I think it should just come with it

They have an odd design oversight on this chassis. The outer door gasket runs right across the outside upper edge of the door sill. You immediately and repeatedly rub it and tear it off. You have a brand new truck with a dangling wrecked gasket. It's super weird to have done this. It might have been a very late add-on for sound isolation.

I still love my jeep gladiator the most with the ZF 8 speed trans.

The turbo plus and HO have forged and hardened engine internals that the base engine does not have.

Looks like a great truck but just try to find one. Asked dealer about ordering one,I was told 5 to 6 months lead time! Kinda frustrating.
Considering they haven't hit the dealer lots why would you be frustrated you can't get a truck that isn't for sale yet?

The last gen didn't sell well. GM got out of the global market for the most part. They shut down the holden plants in Australia and the Rayong Assembly plant in thailand. Mary Barra ceo of GM (scary Mary) decided those markets were not profitable enough. Overseas its more about the navara, Hilux and Ranger. The only plant that will make the new Colorado is the Wentzvill plant in Missouri USA. And they will have trouble keeping up with demand for the domestic market. They will ship to Canada but beyond that I have doubts.

Hybrid would be okay though, but seriously the simpler the better.
Does it have a CVT transmission? Does it have Stop Start technology?
None of the new pickups trucks have CVT transmissions. This comes with an 8 speed automatic. Sadly I do believe it has the start stop in it like most new vehicles but you can turn it off with a button.
You said the work truck can be upgraded to the plus power for $400 but the on-screen note said that's only available in the plus models.
If imagine since it is just tuning there's going to be lots of 3rd party tuning to pump up the boost and timing, etc. Not sure why anyone would pay for the more expensive motor when it's just tuning
When will media outlets be able to report on the ZR2?
They dont start production for the ZR2s until April 10th. So expect the media drives around then or shortly after.
I really liked my 2018 and now 2022 Colorado's, but this one looks much better.

Fuel economy numbers are not available? How about look at your mpg on the dash bro. The biggest question regarding the new twins is how this 2.7 does on mpg in the smaller truck.

I think the EPA just released the official numbers. The detuned version gets 20mpg city, 25mpg highway. 22 combined. They did not test the higher output versions, just the base model. I guess we'll see when they release the EPA numbers for the Canyon as it only comes with the high output engine. But to also address your point on looking at the numbers reported on the dash, those numbers are not always accurate. This is also a pre-production model that many people have been test driving. Many automotive journalists will be driving it a bit sportier and not getting accurate numbers. There is also the possibility that he's not allowed to report the numbers on the dash at the time they were filming this as the EPA numbers had not yet been officially released.

You didn’t mention the specs for the top trim engine?
The high output engine (only available on the top trim ZR2 model) puts out 310HP and 430LB-FT of torque. Not sure of towing specs, but I'd imagine its between 7000-9000.

Did I hear this correctly? They are locking the performance of the engine behind a software nerf that you have to pay to remove? So you buy a truck and have to pay to unlock the features that are there already but locked behind a pay wall... This guy makes that sound like it's a great deal.
The top engineer on the motor design says you cannot upgrade the work truck to the high output specs. Physical parts were removed for efficiency and cost. Can’t do it.
If you try and upgrade the base engine to the high output specs it will eventually mess up your engine. The turbo plus is ok for that, not the base engine

The truck is very nice looking... The engine and transmission do have some issues. Engine problems range from lifter and cam problems to oil leak and transmission issue.... The problems with the engine seen to be the result of the AFM (active fuel management) system. Which raises another question, why does GM feel it necessary to put AFM and cylinder deactivation on a 4 cylinder engine??? Especially when it's powering a truck. The 8 speed transmission is clunky when downshifting at times and has a history of early failures. The lifter and cam issues have been around for a while and GM seems unwilling or unable to completely fix the problem....
And that's why everyone keeps buying the taco. Reliability.

Numerous complaints of it’s horrible transmission and then you couple that with the Camry sized cv axles, weak unboxed frame, ultra crap rear drum brakes, ancient and knowingly shitty interior and of course the car engine they use in them that everyone knows is underpowered. But hey, it’s MADE IN MEXICO, so there’s that.🤣

@@bsfunk44 false. In both the other I can sit in them and see out the wind shield. When I sit in a Tacoma my head is in the ceiling and I can hardly see out the windshield because the ceiling comes down to low into my field of view

The Tacoma isn’t in the same ballpark. It was old when it debuted in 2016. Underpowered, horrible mpg, poor handling and cheap plastic bed.
Nicely done, the infotainment unit looks like the Toyota unit. I would still wait for the new Tacoma . Hope Toyota has a hybrid with decent mileage
When our own country is making such a distinctive and innovative design i personally see no reason to give my money to an overseas economy. I like the looks of these trucks. After all we invented the truck and the chip technology that goes into all new autos.

Really? The interior is what most call the drawback for the taco. Small cabin, least comfortable drive and less technology.
Even if the Tacoma “kinda sucks” it is still the number one seller despite the age of the current generation. 2024 will see a new generation Tacoma and I am fairly confident it will keep one truckin in the 1 spot. A fully optioned Colorado LT 4x4 will cost $47k which ain’t no bargain.
A ZR2 which is just about fully loaded starts at $48k after destination.

Nissan Pro-4X is a naturally aspirated six and no turbos. Best option for longevity, best looking, and capable… it gets my vote.
Looks are subjective. Personally I dislike the look of the new Frontier. Plus, it's still down on power in comparison. The new 2.7 has proven reliable in the Silverado so I think it's a safe bet. But I do agree the Frontier will likely be a VERY reliable pickup even if it lacks in other areas.

Frontier king cab 4x4 is the last of the ext cab options with rear doors that open. New Tacoma ext cab rear doors do not open anymore. I’ll take the Japanese built Nissan V6 all day long. It’ll last.

Until GM can actually show how the 8-speed transmission is actually "better" in this gen, no way I'd consider one of these. And with Ford having recall hell, probably won't consider the next gen Ranger either. Frontier maybe? Been putting off truck shopping for a year and a half, might as well put it off longer.
According to the Engineers, the 8 speed has been revamped to address the past issues. They also said the 2.7 turbo was designed by diesel engineers and is basically a diesel engine that runs on gasoline, but none of that matters if you are hellbent on giving your money to a foreign companies economic economy.

@@dehumm9619 I look at it this way, my Wifes 2017 Cadillac ATS and my 2019 GMC Sierra both have that supposedly nasty 8 speed but we both have ZERO issues with it. Truthfully, even if we had problems with the transmissions, we would either let Gm fix it or it would be covered on our extended warranty. You see, I love and enjoy both vehicles so much that the inconvenience would not be the end of the World for me, and I would do it all over again, no regrets. My money, my decision, my life.
New Frontier with V6 all day long. Tacoma Mexican built as well.
Here's hoping that the MPG is better than a full-size truck! Others aren't!

How long do you think it will last? GM vehicles these days are 100,000 miles at the most before they fall apart. I expect a multitude of issues.
The 2.7 turbo seems pretty overbuilt. The 8 speed has also been reworked but I'm still hearing it has issues in the silverado. Especially that 1st - 2nd gear hard shifts. And yeah, this gets that same 8 speed. You want something that will last buy a older frontier or tacoma with a port injected motor and the 5 speed. Or a 4 runner which still has the 4 liter and 5 speed. But hurry because that will also be updated soon. Tundra and Sequoia have already been done over with turbos and a ton of sensors, plastics etc... They already having issues. 4 runner is the last of the old school made in Japan bad asses. Also if you have the bucks you can't go wrong with the GX 460 lexus which is basically a landcruiser prado except with the port injected 4.6 V8.

Work trucks have always been base models with not even bed liners or anything but optional ac and locks. Base engines usually too I.e. Chevy used to have 4.8 liter engine, Ford had 4.6 vs 5.4 liter and fleet sales default to base v6
Looks really good, but it was concerning how much did he talk about tech. Nothing wrong with tech, but at the end of the day it's a truck, and I care more about payload, towing, and comfort. Btw, he forgot to mention the Gladiator, the Santa Cruz, the Maverick, and the upcoming Bronco truck.
The Santa Cruz and maverick are in different segments than this. The Gladiator should have been mentioned but really it does not offer anything in comparison to the new Colorado. The Gladiator is longer, but manages to not have a larger bed. It also has less payload, less towing in most trims, and less fuel economy with the gas engine and only SLIGHTLY better with the diesel engine. The Gladiator has better head room but lacks leg room and shoulder room in comparison. Yes you can look at the hyundai or maverick when shopping but let's be real they do not offer the same in the truck segment that the Colorado, Tacoma, Gladiator, Ranger, and Frontier do. Nothing wrong with the Santa Cruz or Maverick, they work well for those who need an SUV with a little truck bed. But it's a completely different segment.

Lots of media/press/car magazine/sponsors trucks out there but zero real word trucks at the dealership lots for customers to buy. I just went in December to inquire on a Colorado and they told me at least 6-8 month. 3 weeks later I am rolling with a 2023 Tacoma which there is no BS wait and you can buy them every day and everywhere. Enough of the BS .
According to Chevy if you get the work truck you can’t upgrade the engine power, the mid level engine can be upgraded.
Only a short bed available? That’s a no-go.
The new Colorado easily bests the others as they are pretty old now. The tech and features of the new Colorado are very good, but it seems they come at too high a cost for what you get. The proposed prices for these mid size trucks make one have to think of getting a Silverado Custom instead.
Well, the price thing may be an issue for some and drive them to the Silverado, but, I don't want or need a full-sized truck, and it doesn't fit well in my garage or on tight trails or even in driving in tight parking lots. So, midsize trucks make a lot more sense for a lot of us. Plus, with 310hp and 430lb-ft of torque, it should perform well. I'll be getting a ZR2 in red.
Not at all actually. A Z71 is a little over 40k, and you would have to spend 15k, or more to get that on a full size truck. 11:45

Is the new Chevy Colorado a Midsize Truck? I haven't seen one in person, but these trucks look a lot bigger than the outgoing Colorado. I looked at GM's spec sheet and indeed this 2023 Colorado is a full 10" wider than the outgoing version and only 4"ish inches shy of the width of the Silverado. Weight is up around 700lbs from the previous version on the Z71 spec and encroaching on Silverado territory. Yet magically none of the useful dimensions like interior shoulder room have changed. For those of us looking to navigate narrow trails wider is not better. Is this really what customers told GM they wanted? It seems like GM is competing more with their Silverado Trail Boss and ZR2 than they are with the Toyota Tacoma or Gladiator. I like the styling of this new Colorado but personally I'm a hard pass on the package....hoping that Toyota stays true to the Midsize form factor in their refresh due out next year.
I didn't believe you, but I looked and you're right. Interior room is the same or worse. I remember my dad tried one of these out and the interior space was his main complaint.
The 2023 Colorado and Canyon have a 3" wider wheel base but the overall length of both are only about 1/4" longer than the 2022 twins. The 2023 GMC Canyons, Trail Boss and ZR2 are 3" wider than the 2022s. The 2023 Canyons and Colorado Trail Boss have a factory 2" lift and the ZR2 and AT4X both have a factory 3" lift
everything in america is upsized.. the honda civic is larger than the accord from only 10 yrs ago
The New Colorado is half and inch longer than the Tacoma, half an inch wider than the tacoma, and the Z71 is 135 pounds heavier than the Tacoma Limited. Now if we want to get into interior dimensions sure, lets do it. The Colorado has almost the same or slightly better on interior dimensions than the current model Tacoma. Hip room is slightly less admittedly, but head room and leg room is more.
Now as far as the new Colorado Z71 in comparison to the Gladiator Overland the Colorado weighs almost the exact same, The Colorado is 1 inch wider, the Colorado is 5 inches shorter in length. The interior room the Gladiator gets a little more headroom than the Colorado but the Gladiator has less shoulder and leg room (by quite a bit).
The point is, the new Colorado is actually right in line with the market segment on dimensions and weight.
Yes, a Ford Raptor wouldn't even fit down most trails around here without cutting down trees. But most of those never leave pavement anyway
I'm glad the added wireless car play and 2.7 turbo, too bad the only bed option won't hold a half sheet of plywood..
I don't understand why anyone would buy a truck with a 4.5 foot bed. 5.5 to 6 feet is the minimum bed length that a "truck" should have. These are SUVs without a roof and a smaller back seat. Pointless in my opinion..
I'll be getting a red ZR2 with the moonroof, though I may wait until 2024 to save for more of a downpayment and avoid any dealer gouging.... I'm betting 35's will fit without a lift....I hope.
ZR2 comes with a 3 inch lift I think and 33’s
@@dethtopedophiles3870 Yup! And, unlike the previous gen, these have extra room in the wheelwells. I think for a daily driver (and NOT "mallcrawler"), 35's would be as big as I'd want to go. Having an extra inch ground clearance would be nice for deep snow.

It's going on mid-April and not a single have hit the showroom floor. Chevy is still trying to clear out the 2022's. I'll just wait for the 2024 Tacoma. Plus, chevy is making it bigger....what's the point of a mid-size that is slowly creeping up to full sized truck specs? Mid-sized trucks today are the same size as full sized trucks from 2000's.

i love my new 23 chevy colorado zr2 with tech n saftey package but they are over priced at 53 grand but to me your kinda dumb to pay 49 to 50 grand for a z71 if your gonna spend 50 grand just well spend 53 grand on something that has everything

Won’t own anything Ford or Lincoln again! 23 Hyundai Santa Cruz LTd same as Ford crappy warranty support, lack of local support zero corporate support! 23’ Nissan Pro4X 55k plus it feels well 25 years old. The WT engine and Transmission will not be able to handle either of the higher tunes. Not for long at least. The base engine (L2R) versus L3B. It's also a 8L45 or 65 I believe versus the 8L80. It's just not rated for the extra power.

Terrible engine options. Chevy should put the 4.1 V6 engine in this truck. The 4.1 V6 engine is a great engine. NO SALE HERE.
