There is NO registry for service dogs. They’re not required to be ‘registered’ with anyone, they’re not required to wear a vest or have an ID card. According to the ADA you’re allowed TWO questions, ‘Is that a service dog’ And ‘what is the dog trained to do?’
    That’s it

I used to work for Walgreens way before this happened. We were trained specifically on service animal access. We even kept dog treats in the pharmacy to hand out.
The only time we ever said anything to a customer with a service animal is when the lady set her poodle down on the counter. I asked her to please remove the dog from the counter for sanitary reasons and that was it. When they left I sanitized the counter and went about my business. I will say that people are taking animals everywhere claiming they are service animals and they're not. They're making it harder for the disabled.

First of all, a service dog id card means absolutely nothing! Secondly, there is no requirement by federal law for id cards, registration, or specialty equipment that labels a dog as a service dog. I am a service dog handler and find that most times in instances like these, educating people on requirements regarding service dogs goes a long way!

Big confusion on Emotional Therapy Animals vs. Service Dogs. We really need to get this straight in our laws and educate the public. Honest to God my friend the airline pilot (retired military like me) called me one day and said he had a "service chicken" on the plane. It's gotten absolutely nuts at airports these days.

Not saying that this was the case this time but I've seen lots of dogs come into stores that are clearly NOT service dogs. I'm all for service dogs being able to go anywhere but people who take their PETS into stores when it's clearly marked on most doors pets are not allowed in are making it hard for people who have and need their service animals with them.

***** Most SD owners actually don't like all the attention. Maybe it seems like they do on the outside because they're being polite. Being polite doesn't ALLWAYS mean enjoying.

    • @DreamerxOfxThexNight
      @DreamerxOfxThexNight 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

***** It sounds like you work at this store. If its a specific team that's causing issues know that a manager is allowed to ask them 2 questions:
      - Is the dog required because of a disability?
      - What task or service has the dog been trained to do?
The only issue with this is there's no way to verify - you're basically seeing if the person is prepared to answer or not. A responsible SD owner knows about these questions and will have an answer ready for you.
Also a properly trained service dog is taught to ignore people, noises, everything around it except their owner. Dogs can have an off day, they aren't perfect but know that the dog shouldn't be sniffing everything around it, trying to steal things off the shelf (they may retrieve an item on command), approaching people for attention, barking, or defecating (bathroom inside is an instant boot out of the store). And if the dog does do this at any time a responsible SD owner will stop what they're doing and correct the dog. There's a lot of training that goes into SDs and most trainers take pride in their dog's good manners.
Check out this page for some info:

A Walgreens in Stockton California tried to deny me and my rottweiler service dog. Reason? that the leather leash I had him on was not strong enough in case he attacked someone and he needed to have a different leash on. Rolling eyes that dog is passed now and he was properly trained not to be a threat and he never was his whole life- he didn't even NEED a leash but he wore one for the comfort of others and for appearances. So I agreed to put a different leash on him, I put the very thin paracord thin type emergency leash I keep on him....about a quarter the size of the usual leash....smiled at the jerkoff, and breezed past him inside. Watch what you ask for, you just might get it, especially if you are being ridiculously stupid.

This is a Google search for the SD vest law thing.... Myth: Service dogs must wear a vest, special harness or ID Badge to distinguish them from pet dogs. Fact: Federal law, The Americans with Disabilities Act, does not require any special identification of service animals. Some service dogs need special equipment to perform their jobs correctly, while others do not.

I watch videos like this periodically and usually the dog in question is out of control or behaving in a way that isn't acceptable for a service dog. This dog however was behaving perfectly beside his handler and there was no reason to ask the team to leave. I think the issue was two things. 1: the manager was obviously uneducated, he did not know the laws. 2: Presenting any sort of "Service dog ID" or "registration" pegs a lot of handlers as fake as there is no such requirement for a dog to be a service dog. Most of the time (not all the time) people who have any sort of registration for their dog bought it off a website and either thought it was required or are faking a service dog. I am sorry this happened to this veteran and I hope Walgreens educated its employees on proper etiquette with service dogs.

Steven Knives but if you think of it from the manager's perspective, he does have reason to be suspicious of the dog. Some people have created fake documents so they can take their dog to places even though they're not service dogs. So with that in mind, I can sympathize a little with the manager. But when he tried kicking out the man and his dog, that's when I feel he took the wrong course of action.

Less than a century ago guide dogs for the blind - and their masters - were being treated this way until new laws were introduced. That was before the internet, but shops soon knew the rules and obeyed them. How dim do you have to be to not know about basic the clauses of the ADA?

Because there is no federal certification of service animals in the United States, staff must take declaration of an animal's service status at face value. Furthermore, they are restricted in the questions they may ask about the animal:
When it is not obvious what service an animal provides, only limited inquiries are allowed. Staff may ask two questions: (1) is the dog a service animal required because of a disability; and (2) what work or task has the dog been trained to perform. Staff cannot ask about the person's disability, require medical documentation, require a special identification card or training documentation for the dog, or ask that the dog demonstrate its ability to perform the work or task

There’s no such thing as a registered dog! But services dogs are trained and must perform tasks. Either way you don’t need documentation and if it perform tasks and is obideint and doesn’t distract other service dogs and focuses on work it’s not an issue

There is no registration for service dogs, having an ID can mean (1) the handler uses one for comfort, (2) the handler got scammed, or (3) its a fake. While I do believe the dog is a service dog the ID is fake.

So he showed the documentation to them? I was told that there are people who get fake credentials online. I think it is ok for an employee to ask what kind of training the dog has. I personally love true service dogs and what they do for humans in need. Unfortunately, there are always low caliber people who do not follow the rules and make it difficult for people like this soldier. Thank you for serving our country.

No doubt some people can get fake credentials but I seriously doubt someone would go on the news with their story if it wasn't legit as it would be too easy to prove they were fake.
