      I was going to disagree. I think you are correct. The camere in his face that day didnt scare him... he said multiple ridiculous statements that the town would have to back up. I think the town watched the story on tv and forced the incompetent assessor to act properly. A lawyer, town manager, or small claims court could easily stop the action. Wonder why he didnt fight back using one of those avenues? I guess he got his vindication by using the reporter after sending the money. Personally I would take this as a personal assault. And I am a quiet man.

    • @nickeldime6713
      @nickeldime6713 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rogerwhiting9310 sadly fighting the city is no easy task even if you hire a lawyer, not to mention the fact that taking it to court could take years before it is resolved, mean while despite saying they were going to stop they proceeded to put a lean on the guy's house and threaten to take it away. They did mention something about legal action so he may have been using a lawyer, but it wasn't changing anything and going far to slow. He likely didn't care to be out of the street once the court date finally came about.
      Personally I might still go to court, I feel like the city owes him a lot more than a simple oops we won't take your money now. Threatening letters and feeling like your house is going to be taken away is not an easy thing to deal with, and it was all due to mistakes entirely on the city. Could almost argue extortion because they pressured him to pay money that he didn't actually owe what so ever. It would have been a complete nightmare for the guy.

      Roger Whiting Well the title insurance that comes with his loan would of insured against just such a situation so why should he have to put up his own money for a lawyer when the tax office is the one that screwed up. By using the TV he likely saved everyone involved very expensive legal fees for absolutely no reason.

      It doesn't just happen on property taxes. I've had errors and clients have had errors on federal tax returns where IRS demand a higher tax claiming (fill in the blank). Some people will just pay it because they are afraid of the IRS but the bill should never be automatically paid. Sometimes a small error is made on a return that might cause this but if that is not the case (and it should not be assumed that it is) the notice should be fought with the proper documentation proving you are correct. Surprisingly, the IRS is more flexible than this tax collector ended up being. If you can prove your point with the IRS will find in your favor without getting the press involved.

    When we built our house, we had the water bill changed to our name after taking possession of it. The water company didn’t send anyone out to read the meter, so they billed us for the entire month even though we had only been here for 4 days. I called them to correct it and was told I had to pay for the whole month and I was responsible to collect the excess money from the builder. I did the math and told them I would only pay for 4 days and THEY can collect the difference from the builder since they were at fault for not reading the meter as soon as I claimed the property with them. She refused saying they would shut off our water if I didn’t pay. So I asked her where should I send MY bill to. If I have to do YOUR job for you, I expect to be paid $25 an hour with a minimum of 8 hours per day. She paused, then said she would send me a new bill for the 4 days of usage. This kinda stuff happens. You just gotta be a bulldog about it. Don’t let them walk over you just because they have an office.

    I had an experience nearly exactly like this with the IRS. Incredibly common sense. A single document that they somehow duplicated and so doubled my burden. Again, THEY DUPLICATED IT, and then assessed against me for it. It didn't matter what I said, who I talked to, or how much proof I had - they did nothing about it until I sued.

      You need to look up the "agency problem". Medicare has high patient satisfaction because patients are insulated from the costs and the system (tax payers) soaks up the waste and inflation. Private insurance does the same thing primarily because it has to operate under the same regulations as Medicare and they have rigged the game to have oligopolistic control. That is why costs are so high in the US, not because insurance companies are predatory.
      In a free market insurance system, both providers and insurers would have to compete on price and thus be incentivized to reduce costs. We also are never going to get govenment's hand out of healthcare either. So we are all stuck with the worst of both world where the least get screwed the most.

      its that logic that costs tax payers millions in lawsuits when its the officials that were guilty.
      Lawsuit culture is a huge part of tax expenditures, taking money out of our schools to reward someone who was slighted in some way.
      Sure maybe give him a few thousand extra but in todays world it seams every lawsuit starts at over a million and costs continue to increase during the legal battle.

    • @swskitso
      @swskitso 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @swskitso
      @swskitso 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ my solution is the officials should be the ones doing the compensating not the tax payers.
      Besides that most often those seeking compensation often seek unreasonable amounts for what in the long run was an inconvenience.
      These lawsuits often take millions of tax payer dollars away from schools when its the actions of officials that are the cause while the tax payers have absolutely no involvement other than to pay for the compensation.
      An honest man would see compensation as repayment of any costs and the firing of those involved rather than seek thousands or millions of tax payer dollars he is in no way entitled to.

    I am not a home owner, but the fact that this type of thing happens to innocent people by no fault of their own makes me wary of my future when I do eventually purchase a home. The worst part is either the fact that this was an error on the fault of the tax collector's, or the fact that they knowingly tried to shift the blame/ financial burden on the new home owner who had nothing to do with the error or it's late fees stemmed from a second error due to the bill being sent to the wrong address. Then it takes a news crew shining a bright light on the failures of that office, which looks even more incompetent when we see this manager read out the statements from his own office showing the years which were in question then admitting to them being before the new owners purchased the home, and still saying he would have to check in to it to verify things., Seriously what more do you need, it's obvious your office screwed up, and all you wanna do is shift blame, very pathetic.

    Fun Fact: This can happen to literally anyone that is buying a home that was either foreclosed or was auctioned off due to default payments. It's something that's supposed to be covered by the agent during closings and brought to the buyers attention. Obviously they were not informed, so I would imagine the result of this was the brokerage paying for it and the agent in charge lost their license for failure to disclose vital information.
