An advantage of using a mon outside of its recommended tier is that your opponent likely won't know what you're planning. And that can easily cost the game.
...as long as the Pokémon that you are planning to use on a higher tier is good or has strategies. For example, Mimikyu in SM is in UU but it can be good and useful on OU, if used correctly. On the other hand, Roselia, also in SM, is in PU, but unlike Mimikyu, it's not very useful on higher tiers. No way you can win a OU game by using Roselia.
Edit: The previous version of this comments mentioned Shedinja being in SM PU, which is not the case at all (it is untiered, meaning it can be used on any tier). I replaced it with Mimikyu since I play SM OU and I can say it is kinda useful sometimes
@silviocupica2521 I've seen a bidoof wipe out a team of legendaries. If you're competent and your opponent is unprepared, you can make a lot of things work.

Couple more things to note is that Pokémon below the usage rate threshold in PU is considered "untiered" - this category was introduced in Gen 5 as the pool of available mons was big enough.
As for Ubers, there is a banlist for it; _yes,_ the banlist tier has a banlist of itself. The tier is known as Anything Goes (AG); as the name implies, any legitimate Pokémon and move combo is valid with the only exception being strategies that result in truly endless battle, e.g. Transform-lock ditto. The tier technically started in Gen 4 with Arceus banned from Uber battles, but it really gained notoriety once it was legitimised by Mega Rayquaza in Gen 6.

@@alchemysaga3745It sounds very simple you get 2 dittos(you could use trick on a Pokémon with trace switch to ditto it would trace the transform then you get 2 dittos you repeat this forcing them to switch till their whole team is just tracing a ditto

There's also ZU, or ZeroUsed, which isn't an official tier but very well could be in the future.

I'm so glad that I found somebody to explain this to me cuz I've always looked at these tiers that I had no idea what it meant or how it worked.
The 4.52% usage rate seems like a really weird number, but there’s a reason for it. Any Pokémon that meets that threshold has at least a 50% chance of being seen in 20 battles in that tier.

Thank you for this. I usually only play VGC and only recently started using Smogon (playing VGC games of course lol). I never understood WTF those singles tiers were.
The main thing I don't like about the naming scheme is that "OverUsed" implies "Above Average" while "UnderUsed" implies "Below Average", even though it's the next tier behind OU

You have VGC which is the format condoned by Gamefreak for Doubles
Then there is Smogon (the one mentioned here) which is a community made system for 6V6 Singles.
Those two are the biggest ones but you also have two alternatives
Doubles OU which is the Smogon rules but for Doubles
BSS which is the "GF approved" format for singles but it gets no spotlight from them and outside of Korea and Japan it's a really unpopular format, notably because it's legitimately terrible with probably the worst ruleset imaginable. Talking about this dumpster fire is a rabbit hole in of itself honestly
@@sephikong8323 I think Smogon also got Double Battle Rankeds, basically VGC rules but with Showdown rules slapped on 'em, like only being able to sleep 1 Pokemon to the enemy.

While I am not strictly a tiered player, I still respect the ban lists from Smogon so as not piss off players who think I only won matches because of one OP Pokemon on my team. It's why I replaced my Annihilape with a Ceruledge, and frankly I love my new edgelord.

To add: AG. Smogon has many clauses to make the Game better. Like the Pass or the endless Battle or the sleep clause. In AG there are None of These clauses except endless Battle. You can Play 1hko moves, Spam Spore in the enemy Team, usw swagger etc
A good example is breloom, it's in UU but it has a lot of good sets and it can counter kingambit, tusk and with focus sash you can spore and set up with sword dance
Torkoal was also UU for quite a while, even though setting up sunlight is very powerful when used with past paradox mons like Roaring Moon and Walking Wake.
A few examples of non Ou pokemon that are good in the format are-
Gastrodon- If you’ve play competitive for a long time you know this thing’s legacy…
Rotom wash- from personal experience in gen eight ou this thing is still viable.
Hydregon- …I don’t think I need to explain this one.
Ubers is basically what I like to call the home of the legendaries
The semi-official tier bellow PU was originally going to be called FU, but that's too much fun for smogon so they call it ZU instead
FU is gonna be the tier under ZU in gen 15
I remember that on gen 7 gliscor was UU and after a month i started using it, it was moved to OU, its crazy how out of nowhere any pokemon can be used

One of my favorite low teir mons is ditto, technically being viable in every teir because it's ranked zu in most gens. In Gen 1, specifically, its niche in ubers was that it was technically a slightly worse mew/mewtwo, where having any form of either pokemon in Gen 1 is so powerful to begin with.
Been on showdown for years now. Even won a tournament held by a Google + community called Pokemon, they had over a million members.

I personally believe we should split Ubers in two. Having Ubers be just a banlist for OU Pokemon might have worked when there were only two extremely overcentralizing Pokemon in it, but nowdays that it is an actual metagame of its own, with bans and viability rankings, putting every Pokemon too good for OU in there just feels wrong. We've made like a billion tiers under OU just so Crustle fans have a place where they can use their favourite Pokemon, but if you want to use fucking Lugia you're shit out of luck.
Well in a sense, AG is like another Ubers. An ÜberÜber, or ÜÜ, if you like. 😉
@@chrayez Not really. Anything Goes is what Ubers used to be. Just a banlist with no real metagame. AG is where you if you want to play against other players but not in any real competitive way. It's where you go to make stupid staged videos bullying children.
What I suggest is splitting the dominant Ubers like Eternatus or Yveltal into their own, main Ubers tier, and keeping outclassed Pokemon like Lugia, Naganadel or the Kyurems in a seperate tier, where they all have a chance at competing and using one of them isn't just dead weight.

@@mertensiam3384 UUbers isn't ideal either. Pokemon like Skeledirge are banned there for the sole reason of being good in Ubers, not because they wouldn't fit the metagame. It's like how a Pokemon like Pelipper is right at home in NU, but because it sees use in OU all the other tiers are denied it. The difference here being that, if a Pokemon isn't banned from OU, it doesn't really make sense to ban it from a tier with theoretically higher power levels.

Don't forget about Untiered. The mon that are not recommended for use in any tournament.
Unturned doesn’t mean it isn’t recommended for use in tournaments, simply that it hasn’t used often enough yet to earn a placement in the tier list.
Usually happens with new Pokemon getting released and with Dexit forcing the meta to be incredibly unfavorable to certain Pokemon.

AG doesn't exist in Gen 9. It does still exist in the form of Nat Dex AG

What is Smogon and how does the tiers translate on official tournaments ?
Smogon is independent from the Pokemon Company, and is mostly a community project. It isn‘t affiliated with any official tournaments by the Pokemon Company.
Smogon‘s goal is to create a competitive environment for Singles, because the Pokemon Company never did that. And because Smogon has been around for so long now, for many people it‘s the main authority for competitive singles pokemon.
So basically, if everyone starts to use igglypuff, it becaomes OU?

I think it stands for Zero-Used. It's basically an unofficial tier below PU, so that there's an environment in which people can still use at least some of the Pokemon that are otherwise completely unviable.
