MUBUTV's Ritch Esra sits down with one of the leading VP of A&R - Jeff Vaughn from APG [Artist Publishing Group] | Atlantic now president of Capitol Records. They discuss the changing role of A&R in 2018, How does an artist get on his radar? What has to be present for him to seriously consider signing an artist? What are the most important NON MUSIC related aspects in determining if he signs and artist or not? How important is the role of live performance in his decision to sign an act? What makes a great A&R Executive?
Jeff Vaughn is VP of A&R, Artist Partners and Artist Publishing Group. He has signed and/or directly A&R'd gold and platinum certified artists including Kevin Gates, Kehlani, Lil Skies, Youngboy Never Broke Again, Fast 8 soundtrack, and more. Vaughn is currently focused on breaking rising stars Rico Nasty and Quando Rondo, among other exciting acts. He is based in Los Angeles.

youtubers posting advice for artists always say that you need to be "ready" and have a substantial amount of followers to get signed by a major label. but listening to some of the top guys in the industry, it's clear that it's not necessarily so, that they actually DO develop talents.

I love what you said about not believing A&R dead, it has a vital role to play. It does! There are smaller music companies out here who are investing in the right artists and taking on Artist Development and music marketing/promo roles. When there is such an important role gone in the industry, artists need help more now than ever, it has opened so many doors for new music business to fill the void. Loved this episode. Between working a full-time job and raising a family, i am doing everything but touring at this time. MUBUTV I’m new to this channel. Big props for what you’re doing. I feel I have all the main keys they’re looking for, and so do those around me.
Based off of information you’ve gathered over the years. Does me not having/having loads of content from myself, as an artist.... setting me back?
I have tons of great songs in my vault, even better than the ones/more “full” feeling songs then the ones I’ve released so far (feel free to check them out for yourself). I haven’t put them out because I feel I’m not at the place (popularity wise) to release them.
I’m wondering if my lack of content is hindering me from being heard... I know the answer sounds obvious but I’ve seen many artists get signed with way less content, if any at all.

It’s all in who you know not what you know right ? With a saturated market it’s tough. At the end of the day you gotta do cuz you love it. I can say some days you struggle. Especially managing your own band is insane. It would be cool if labels could offer a half style of support! Who can sell those pesky tickets ? Haha.
Cool video. Always looking for tips. I dunno about the artist development part. Most labels crank out these songs and doesn’t really seem like any time was spent writing. Releasing songs 1 at a time seems the way to go. Back to Muscle Shoals days! Woo!

After watching many of your videos i think that the music industry still the same as before..its just technology making it look differentl...and of course everybody can try its chance thats why the market seem saturated and its becopming hard to be perceived.. and also when a song is done everything that come close to it or imitate it or sound like it wont create interest ..so its harder to create new songs too..thats why i think a real Artist wont stay hidden untill u find him..

Great information! I have one question though and I hope that you answer it. Do A&Rs, who have published their emails for artists to submit their songs to them in order to be considered to be signed by their label, really open all the emails with song submissions in them, and do they really listen to those songs? As you know, Ritch, there is lot of work and even money that artists invest in their songs. On the other hand, A&Rs receive tons of such emails on daily basis. So do they really open those emails and listen to the songs? Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks!

+Smiti Bhatia Hello Smiti in regards to your question. We think it depends on the A&R and how they process that information that comes in. They have filters and A&R assistants in place to go through all of the submissions. Is it complete overwhelm for them personally? We’re sure it is to a certain degree and that’s why they have their asst. go through the submissions first and if it is something that resonates with them they forward those to the main A&R and go from there. @@MUBUTV Thank you for replying back to me - better late than never. My 19-year old daughter, Disha Aroha, is a super talented, self-reliant and self-educated singer-songwriter and music producer. She has reached out to several A&Rs with her song submissions, especially from Atlantic, and she continues to follow-up with them but has had no luck on hearing back from them. She would love to meet Jeff Vaughn.
She understands very well that A&Rs are super busy people. However she has not found the names and contact info of A&Rs' assistants. Can you please advice, how and where she can find this info?
Also, what do you mean by, A&Rs have filters in place to go through all of the submissions?
In general it seems like, music executives are open to listening to song submissions of musicians who are referred to them therefore common people like us, who have no connections in the industry feel stranded and discouraged.
I am very supportive of my daughter, because I know how much potential she has . She has unique talent, authentic signature sound and a very clear vision of what she wants to achieve with her music. What she does not have is the resources to launch and boost her career. I feel very helpless. She has not released her original songs that are solely written, sung and produced by her, because she has a vision of how she wants to release them- with the help of a management co. or a record label.

They specially in contact directories for the music industry.
To your second question on A&R having filters in place, we mean that they have a team and staff of people that go through online submissions and other trusted sources that they get submissions from and they go through them and select anything that may be worth exploring more.
What we can say with certainty is that your daughter needs to focus on putting out the best music possible and building an audience for herself via social media, live performance etc.
Trust us if there is a buzz on her people will start taking notice.

I’m stuck. My band CloZure has blown up on TH-cam and Facebook like crazy and still haven’t had nibble of any offer. I’m just curious on what else we need to do.
Michael, thanks for your comments. We’re glad to hear that you’re having success on your own. Our advice is to continue doing what you are doing and building the story of CloZure by writing more great songs. A&R are incredibly savvy and if you’re making noise, they will find you. But we would highly suggest building it on your own, you may come to realize that it’s not a record deal that you’re looking for, but maybe building a sustainable business where you don’t even need the help of a label. @5:45 ok this pissed me off. The guy answers in his previous question that its "a bonus" if his signed acts can actually perform live. Then he says here that A&R are still involved with artist development........ cause ur signing NON PERFOMERS... so ur wasting ur time and resources just getting them to the basic functionality of the job role. when that same resource and effort can be applied to someone who can do the job, imagine th level up or return on your investment. woosah
Hello damein5469. It seems you're expressing frustration over the apparent disconnect between talent acquisition practices in the music industry and the practical need for artists to perform live. Your point about focusing resources on artists who are already skilled live performers is well-taken, as it suggests they might provide a better return on investment. One other thing to keep in mind within the context of APG is that they deal with people who are just writers as well too so in those cases these are folks that don't necessarily want to become artists in their own right. How is a label functioning at all. An artist commonly look after themselves nowadays.
+DanArmaniBeats yes you’re right a lot of artists are going and staying independent these days, but there are still a lot of artists that are going the label route as well too, it’s really about your preference and what road you want to take. huge red flag for me (as an 1. Music Lover 2. Artist/Songwriter) @4:30 "how important is their ability to perform live?".... The fact that this is even a question BTS with actual Professionals.... lets you know that y'all aren't buying music, and definitely don't know good music. We been hearing the same song with different faces for 100 years now. If they can't perform live, they should take a career aptitude test and see what occupation they should Occupy.
