FINALLY! This dude answers the question that I keep asking myself. Everybody else on the internet, mostly these "influencers" keep saying it's all about the social media content that you create for your branding, etc. He literally just said that there's no one way of doing it. You CAN be a nobody but have AMAZING music, or be someone that has a social media following and some decent content behind it. At least this tells me that the music industry is still honest about wanting to find that raw talent in up and coming artists.

The big hurdle is getting your music solicited to them. They usually will never listen to someone who has not been solicited to them from trusted sources. If you feel like you have mastered your craft, getting in front of the people who will put your music on their desk is the most daunting task.

I've produced music for over 45 years and have seen the seismic shifts in the "Business of Music" and not certain this is how it's done at all labels. Atlantic was different from day 1 when Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson founded the label in 1947. Ahmet, Herb and later Jerry Wexler ran an independent label like a major one. Obviously they became an incredible label over the years. If you only collected one label, Atlantic had / has it all in terms of music genres. Initially a rhythm and blues, blues and jazz label. The team was always looking forward and in particular Ahmet had an ear for the future, musically wise. Glad to listen to what Pete Ganbarg says and looks like he has continued much in the same tradition of the past 75 years of Atlantic's existence. It must be in the genes as they say... Its refreshing to get the source from where it matters. In a world where the gold rush gets its wealth from the sale of pans & shovels (exploiting the prospectors) rather than the gold itself, I am pleasantly surprised to learn that the gold is still valued (i.e Pete Ganbarg's explanations) I write songs and I put a lot of effort in offering both great music (and great story). I believe the two together is what comprises "Best in Class".

The "R" in A&R stands for "Revenue". It's never about the music. It's about picking 10 rando acts, and bank on the one or two to make it big, then chuck the rest. Rinse and repeat.
People like Pete know that every day someone out in the millions has written a song that with the right artist, would be a top 10 hit. I had an idea that if record companies would set up a website where songwriters could upload songs for free; maybe has categories and a limited time like 90 seconds for verse chorus and maybe another verse. Leave off any cats they don't need. Maybe they're currently looking for country but no rap, or vice versa. In an 8-hour day, a couple of good a&r listeners could listen to a lot of 90 second clips and spot the potentials. then contact them for info and a full upload. Maybe they need a good Ballad, so the upload isn't full of up-tempo or again, vice versa. They would definitely hear hidden gems they might have never found.
This is a good idea! It's a win-win for both songwriters and record labels. It could be a new way that new music is discovered and give talented artists a platform to be heard. MUBUTV

Atlantic were coming to you soon. We like your ethics and I'm holding a beast of a singer whom we keep off line so now we have a full CD completed. Platinum artist.
My biggest struggle I think is securing live performances. I can see how people react when I play live, and though it gives me a lot of confidence, not enough people have seen me. Lately I've been working on virtual performances, at least I can do that on my own, but I really need a booking agent. Hopefully this doesn't sound arrogant, but I am one of the best piano players in the world, I just gotta get more live performances, I think that's the key. If there's a booking agent out there, I have 1300 views on my TH-cam channel, and I don't even really know how to promote myself. They mentioned 21 Pilots and their great team. I have a team of one, and it's lonely out here lol 😂. Lisa
Hi Lisa, and thanks for your comments. Booking agents will only want to work with you if you already have a following and are doing good business on your own before they decide to want to work with you in our experience. Maybe look for someone that is more independent or someone that wants to learn the booking business that believes in you and have them start booking your shows. The key is building it on your own first and once you have the following down and are selling maybe in 3 of the nearest cities to you in your market, then you’ll have a greater chance of landing a decent booking agent. Hope this helps in finding direction on this subject. MUBUTV

Only thing I can think of is being able to get this guy to meet in a studio setting. The music in the background was distracting however as an artist I understand A&Rs are so busy you have to be able to carry on through the noise because they are always on the go. All and all great Job. You have the talent for this keep pushing forward.

Hello Angelo, sorry for the delay in responding back to you. We have been feverishly working towards launching our new content. In regards to your question, typically yes an A&R would be making those decisions, but it’s probably moved more to a case by case basis depending on the act itself and if they already have folks they are working with that the label may approve. It may be best to reach out to the label managers at the label itself and establish contact that way. Everybody else on the internet, mostly these "influencers" keep saying it's all about the social media content that you create for your branding, etc. He literally just said that there's no one way of doing it. You CAN be a nobody but have AMAZING music, or be someone that has a social media following and some decent content behind it. At least this tells me that the music industry is still honest about wanting to find that raw talent in up and coming artists.

The big hurdle is getting your music solicited to them. They usually will never listen to someone who has not been solicited to them from trusted sources. If you feel like you have mastered your craft, getting in front of the people who will put your music on their desk is the most daunting task.

I've produced music for over 45 years and have seen the seismic shifts in the "Business of Music" and not certain this is how it's done at all labels. Atlantic was different from day 1 when Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson founded the label in 1947. Ahmet, Herb and later Jerry Wexler ran an independent label like a major one. Obviously they became an incredible label over the years. If you only collected one label, Atlantic had / has it all in terms of music genres. Initially a rhythm and blues, blues and jazz label. The team was always looking forward and in particular Ahmet had an ear for the future, musically wise. Glad to listen to what Pete Ganbarg says and looks like he has continued much in the same tradition of the past 75 years of Atlantic's existence. It must be in the genes as they say... Great interview.

Its refreshing to get the source from where it matters. In a world where the gold rush gets its wealth from the sale of pans & shovels (exploiting the prospectors) rather than the gold itself, I am pleasantly surprised to learn that the gold is still valued (i.e Pete Ganbarg's explanations) I write songs and I put a lot of effort in offering both great music (and great story). I believe the two together is what comprises "Best in Class".

The "R" in A&R stands for "Revenue". It's never about the music. It's about picking 10 rando acts, and bank on the one or two to make it big, then chuck the rest. Rinse and repeat.
People like Pete know that every day someone out in the millions has written a song that with the right artist, would be a top 10 hit. I had an idea that if record companies would set up a website where songwriters could upload songs for free; maybe has categories and a limited time like 90 seconds for verse chorus and maybe another verse. Leave off any cats they don't need. Maybe they're currently looking for country but no rap, or vice versa. In an 8-hour day, a couple of good a&r listeners could listen to a lot of 90 second clips and spot the potentials. then contact them for info and a full upload. Maybe they need a good Ballad, so the upload isn't full of up-tempo or again, vice versa. They would definitely hear hidden gems they might have never found.

This is a good idea! It's a win-win for both songwriters and record labels. It could be a new way that new music is discovered and give talented artists a platform to be heard. MUBUTV

We like your ethics and I'm holding a beast of a singer whom we keep off line so now we have a full CD completed. Platinum artist.
My biggest struggle I think is securing live performances. I can see how people react when I play live, and though it gives me a lot of confidence, not enough people have seen me. Lately I've been working on virtual performances, at least I can do that on my own, but I really need a booking agent. Hopefully this doesn't sound arrogant, but I am one of the best piano players in the world, I just gotta get more live performances, I think that's the key. If there's a booking agent out there, I have 1300 views on my TH-cam channel, and I don't even really know how to promote myself. They mentioned 21 Pilots and their great team. I have a team of one, and it's lonely out here lol 😂.

Hi Lisa, and thanks for your comments. Booking agents will only want to work with you if you already have a following and are doing good business on your own before they decide to want to work with you in our experience.
Maybe look for someone that is more independent or someone that wants to learn the booking business that believes in you and have them start booking your shows.
The key is building it on your own first and once you have the following down and are selling maybe in 3 of the nearest cities to you in your market, then you’ll have a greater chance of landing a decent booking agent.

Only thing I can think of is being able to get this guy to meet in a studio setting. The music in the background was distracting however as an artist I understand A&Rs are so busy you have to be able to carry on through the noise because they are always on the go.

This is an amazing interview. Great questions and great answers. I'm a pro mixing engineer and I'd like to work with labels. Is it the A&R who also hires the mixing engineer for an artist? Thanks in advance.
Hello Angelo, sorry for the delay in responding back to you. We have been feverishly working towards launching our new content. In regards to your question, typically yes an A&R would be making those decisions, but it’s probably moved more to a case by case basis depending on the act itself and if they already have folks they are working with that the label may approve. It may be best to reach out to the label managers at the label itself and establish contact that way.
