Probably would be a good idea to get one of those little brushes that plumbers use to put flux on copper pipes to spread the case sealer. The brushes are about 6" long and have kind of stiff flat bristles.

When I rebuilt my K1 several years ago I found that someone previously had replaced the primary chain slipper guide with a tensioner. The problem was that the K1 engine casing interfered with the replaced mechanism and also the throw plate, if i remember correctly. Consequently when the two engine casings were fitted together they didn't close up tight unless they are pulled together with the engine casing bolts thus crushing the the replaced tensioner parts against the primary chain. I therefore reverted it back to the original set up with the slipper. Any thoughts?

yes. the chain guard ? thingy that the chain kind of sits in, { throw plate ? } probably an oil pan, had to be cut to make it fit. wingovations.com/fitting-a-sprung-primary-chain/4584942275

What keeps the upper half of the case from coming down and smashing your fingers when you're taking the hose clamps off the pistons?

Torsten the cases will sit with just the piston rings holding them and will ( or should ) slide down with a bit of gentle pressure.

Mostly from David Silver Spares and CMSNL in the Netherlands.
I have found Vesrah gasket sets to be very very good.
