Robert does it again! My 1998 V70 (non-AWD, 190k miles) cruise control quit about seven years ago. Brake switch, check. Accelerator linkage arm, check. Vacuum hose near battery, sliced! I reconnected the ends using a piece of windshield washer hose. Cruise control, works! Wish I had known about this when it quit a long time ago

A huge thank you from France Robert. I managed to get my cruise control back up and running simply by pulling back up on the brake pedal. No doubt a garage would have found some other reason and charged a fortune. Thank you so much :)

Holy shit Robert. You are a life saver. Glued a little washer on the brake switch after diagnosing it how you showed, and it worked fine again. This video helped me solve a long time annoying behavior of the CC dropping 5 mph before accelerating to the set speed. From what you showed, even though you didn't mention it, I noticed that there was an adjuster screw above the throttle pedal by the linkage to the bellows. I adjusted that until I found the sweet spot so that idle is not increased but when I hit cruise set the slack is out of the cable and the Bellow can react faster. Now only 1-2 mph drop before speed is back on target and if I hold throttle steady for half a second, no drop at all! Big thanks.

Just posting to express my gratitude to you for this video. Was preparing to troubleshoot a non-operating issue with the CC on my 98 V70 GLT. Your tip about the vacuum line to the pump under the battery tray was spot on. The short length of rubber tubing that attaches to the pump had corroded. A quick fix for me because I already had such tubing from servicing my 87 Volvo 245 which has 419k+ miles on it at present and is still going strong. I'm cruising easy now fully operational. Many thanks.

Lol, wow again I couldn't find anything on the speedometer. Mine isn't working. And I just was being watching your amazing videos and work. When you said the speed sensor was bad, I was like bingo. Lol I was worried I would have to pull the dashboard and cluster. Then put a new cluster in. Or tear the cluster apart to figure it out. Could still be a wire or plug. Maybe something else. But I have a feeling it is the speed sensor. Thanks again for all your time and help Robert.

I have a 2001 xc70 with 645000km on it. It is in very good shape but the worst issue is that the cruise control is flakey.
I will inspect the hoses, linkages and switches as you explained here.
My battery is in the trunk though (I have the wagon model), so I guess my cruise control vacuum pump is not under there ?
When I go to work in the morning, it usually works fine, but at random moments it will just disengage. Sometimes I can set it again and then it works just fine. Other times it will not re-engage for miles. Sometime the entire system will disable (as indicated in the cluster) and will not turn on again. However I can fix that on the go by going to neutral, turning off the car and then re-starting. I once put it in reverse at highway speed because I went too far while putting it in neutral, not good !

    • @RobertDIY

Could be a problem in the ABS system or instrument cluster. Brake pedal switch would be your best bet.

    • @marcusjosefsson4998
      @marcusjosefsson4998 3 ปีที่แล้ว

From model year 99 the cruise control on C/S/V70 (P80) is totally electronic, no vacuum hoses and such.
And this applies to all Volvo's with an electronic throttle body, so also all P2 cars.
In most cases a malfunctioning cruise control on those cars are because of a faulty stalk or a problem with the ABS system. Also electronic stability control failures will make the cruise control malfunction.

Hey Robert, thanks for the video! On mine, it's clearly the vacuum tube next to the battery, just like you said. How do I go about replacing it? Is there a specific size vacuum tube that I can get at the auto parts store and cut to fit? Also, where does the other end of that tube go? Do I need to replace the whole thing, or is it common to just replace a section?

Just to clarify the brake switch topic, there are two switches, the bottom one with the white plunger is the brake light switch, the cruise control switch is hidden above that and is all black with a two wire plug and vacuum release line attached to it. one of the retainer clips on this switch was broken on my car so it was loose. The pump and vacuum lines held and vacuum would release when pressing the brake (using the relay bypass test), but the plunger switch was not in deep enough to close the electrical relay, so the cruise could never be set...until I taped the two switches together to help hold the cruise control switch in place, and added some shim material to the brake lever to ensure the relay closed with the brake released. Call me cheap but I have a hard time spending $40 to fix a problem caused by a broken plastic retainer tab, they should have went a little heavier on the switch mounting design...

Is the ABS light on the dash lit? Could be a small vacuum leak, could be a bad speed control relay, sadly I have not narrowed those cruise issues down to a fast fix yet.

@@RobertDIY i have had some ABS issues in the past with calliper over heat codes, but they seem to have gone recently and i put them down to ABS ecu connector or ABS pcb probs. the only other prob is the tracs/abs light will come on often because of the brake pedal position switch on the master cylinder needing me to fix its pcb but im scared if i remove it it will not seal well afterwards and Volvo dont sell them. i will have a look at the relay as apart from maybe some play in the pedal actuator i cant think what else would cause it.

Robert, I have a 1993 850. It has a linkage with an elbow joint and an adjustment nut that limits its extension. I am guessing it is the pulling stress on the linkage, that creates a vacuum in the bellows that makes the CC work. I managed to pull it out of the gaspedal without breaking the old fragile plastic. My question to you is, would you write or better make a video where you show, how the adjustment plastic screw works and how it should be positioned? Hello Robert, are you still here? Question..my 850 t5 had starting problems which turned out to be the fuel pump relay (found out thanks to your video). I had a mechanic who tried to start the car and after several tries the engine was working for a while (this was before I told him to try to bypass the fuel pump relay cause the problem wasn't solved yet). Now what happened next was scary, all of a sudden my gas pedal went full throttle out of it self. The mechanic eventually disconnected a vacuum pump from the gas pedal for preventing this happens again. Now when I hit my brake pedal I hear that pump hissing. Do you know what can causes the cruise control go haywire? It's so strange that this occured at the same time I got this fuel relay problem..the only thing I can think of is that while removing the fuel pump relay I touched the cruise control relay.

@@RobertDIY thanks for answering. Haven't checked yet but don't think so, as long as that vacuum servo is disconnected the problem is gone besides the hissing sound when I hit the brake. In this video of yours it shows what happened to the gas pedal but with the engine running. (The cruise control switch was off btw) th-cam.com/video/2KiESwZ7PTk/w-d-xo.html

Hi Robert. Have a 99 V70 Turbo and was having trouble with the cruse as well. At the same time the engine was acting sluggish. Did find a hose to an electrical connection not fully seated but still the same symptoms. Most hoses look cracked and slightly dry rotted but are still OK. Tried and tried to locate the cruse modual and pump but can not. Not under battery or air cleaner and not near the throttle body? Now this is an all electric throttle. Looked under dash but nothing comes close and no linkage to accelerator. Any other places I can look? Now the good news in all my efforts to remove MAF, battery, air cleaner and was about to clean throttle body I reassembled and it runs great including the cruse. I think by disconnecting battery it reset everything, think that what it was?

Hi Robert, firstly thank you for all these videos you did, they are priceless. Then I want to ask you a question. I have some problems with my S70 2.0 T5 AT. My cruise control does not work. I checked most of the things. Vacuum pump, hoses, brake pedal sensor are OK as far as we can see with my mechanic. When we diagnose the cruise control via OBD, we get the code 122 speed sensor. There is nothing wrong with my odometer. I think I have the problem you had that you mentioned at the end of your video, but I couldn't get how to check or fix it. Can you please explain more detailed? Thank you again.
