US Navy Trident C4 ballistic missile Vet here. I got to serve on these boats. Going underway is never easy. Luckily we never got over extended on our deployments. Each sub has 2 full crews, a Blue and a Gold. So ya go out for 70ish days at a time, then come back and sit in an office till ya have to go out again. "Boomers", the missile subs, are the greatest deployment ever. If you could be on the same boat for 5 years you could plan Christmas 5 years down the road. And you get a huge tax credit for only being in the country 6 months out of the year.

The thing I love the most about this movie is that the plot and story are fairly generic but it’s the storytelling, filmmaking and acting that really elevate this movie into something worthwhile. Tony Scott was unimpressed with the script when he signed on to direct, but saw the potential in it so he gave it to the writers of the previous two films he’d just directed Quentin Tarantino and Shane Black (True Romance and The Last Boy Scout) to punch up. And if you’re familiar with their writing styles you can pretty easily identify which scenes each of them put their stamp on.

Greatest submarine movie ever made. Perfectly captured the intense boredom, brutally Spartan conditions on a German U-Boat, along with the absolute terror of imminent death. Pertinent numbers there; during the war, 40,000 German sailors served on submarines. Of those, over 30,000 were killed in action. The single highest rate of loss of any military unit in history, including Japanese Kamikaze pilots. Great film.

At the time, Capt Ramsey (Hackman) was absolutely correct in his actions. Full authority rested with the sub commander, and he controlled the launch decisions. That’s why they made the comment at the beginning about the three most powerful men in the world. Shortly after this film came out, the system was reworked to remove the captain’s control, placing the launch decision in the hands of the president directly. I had two friends who were involved in developing the security and cryptography systems to allow that change. Fascinating stuff, but incredibly complex. Layers of safeguards and countermeasures to ensure against unauthorized launches, as you’d hope.

The Captain isn't an evil, or bloodthirsty man. He does not WANT to launch the missiles. The fact is that he has been given legal orders to do it, and he believes that orders are given for a reason. It does not matter if he understands why, or if he agrees. He does not have the full picture. Threatening his crew with lethal violence is not unhinged - their inaction is potentially going to cost millions of lives.
To a large extent, obeying orders is about faith - individual leaders can be stupid or wrong, but overall those in position to give orders have demonstrated that they have aptitude for command and understanding of the consequences of giving orders. If the subordinates ever lose faith, chaos ensues.
Fundamentally the Captain is a believer, and Hunter is a doubter - not yet a heretic but unwilling to take actions with such high stakes, without verifying for himself.

I had a work buddy who served in the Submarine Corps, U.S. Navy. Part of his job involved target selection if the call ever came. He had some really funny stories.
In his own words: "The entire purpose of a nuclear submarine is to go somewhere, lay low, and be scary."

  • @jamespfp
    @jamespfp 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

19:25 -- RE: "It would be hot down there."; A: Depending on a lot of factors, it *might* manage to get hot but Fun Fact! submarines (starting in World War 2) were among the first ships of the U.S. Navy to have proper air conditioning plus freezer refrigeration on board, because the only thing keeping the air "Hot" is the inside cabin pressure and carbon dioxide. The outside water temperature tends to cool down everything inside the submarine over time, until finally the air starts to lose its moisture to condensation. So, to keep the ship properly dehumidified and thus pleasant air conditioning via heat exchange is used, and since this sucker is nuclear, there's lots of power for it.
With all that being said, "Silent Running" is the mode of operation where a submarine turns off any and all equipment which would be noisy enough for another submarine to potentially hear it using hydrophones, also known as passive sonar. If rigged for silent running it is possible that the inside might get more uncomfortable but the air exchangers probably won't be as noisy as the high pressure steam being used for electrical generation.

On the subject of the word "Greenwich" (for next time you encounter it, which you're going to), this is one of those words invented by the English, and they in their wisdom like to say it "Grennitch". 😆. This was movie was so well done, and the ending was key to removing anxiety from film goes (ie; beach vacations took a noticeable dip for the two years following the release of “Jaws”). I am also sure the military has a number of trained out contingencies (ie; President is incapacitated or dead), because to leave the fate of the world in the hands of one person, who’s nation has historically a 40% absentee rate in general elections, is about as solid as Rock,Paper, Scissors.

35:13 This scene just shows how little Captain Ramsey actually knows his _crew._ The crew of a submarine can spend _months_ at a time, at sea. I mean, it's _one_ thing to spend months at a time at sea with people you don't necessarily _like._ That's _unavoidable._ Life in the Armed Forces all too often means being professional enough that you can work with people you're not _friends_ with. But you don't spend months at a time with people who are prepared to shoot you in the head (or the people you're in charge of) to get their _way._ I mean, that's gonna _devastate_ morale.

I have never seen any other actor among the very most impressive for 5 generations who can replicate any character with flawless and perfect depiction, and his delivery is equally impressive. A highly underated, unrewarded by accolades actor who left Hollywood for its biased envious hiararchy of moguls and actors since Hackman wasn't a bow to the SAG and Film masters and only learned and mastered his craft with extraordinary talent being singularly one of a kind. I salute you Sir Hackman, king of the craft! I must add also that Denzel is an extraordinary actor that has impressed me again and again

As a Navy vet - I love this movie - we had a few moments where flag officers disagreed - we had procedures in place that resolved these issues immediately - but what if… I love it.
The attitudes, dialogue, characters are pretty well done - they must have had some killer Navy advisors for the film.
The only issue I have is the one officer shouting at the enlisted guy - good officers take care of their enlisted - the people that make you look good.
Out in the fleet, if an officer yelled ‘give me 20 pushups’! I’d have told him to ‘F off’

Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Along with a very young Don Rickles. Another great sub movie, but involving a very different time in submarine technology. If you ever visit Cleveland, stop by and tour the USS Cod. it’s a Gato class sub, still in its original WWII configuration. This was the same type of boat seen in “Run Silent, Run Deep.” Great movie.

  • @FPAlpha

What i really love about the movie is that up until a certain point both sides, the captain and the XO, had something going for them. The Captain is an old school hardass but he has to be because he has an unimaginable responsibility having weapons on board that are capable of destroying the world whereas the XO has a more cooperative, one could say modern, style of command and it's up to the viewer to choose the side because both are vaiid.
The movie of course takes a side later on when the Captain steps over the line by breaking military law and rules putting the XO automatically on the right side and also hammered home by COB (Chief of the Boat, the highest non-officer on the boat), who executes the orders of the XO to detain the captain but only because he broke the rules.
Where the movie falls off a little is the end when Ramsay suddenly mellows out and calms down when proven wrong and even recommends promotion of the XO. It is a bit far fetched because of his antagonism towards his XO from almost the start. They try to show him as being the bigger man by admitting his mistake without him actually admitting it but it's inconsistent with how he was shown throughout the movie.

For a completely different take on the "submarine film" genre I'd highly recommend Down Periscope. It's a comedy starring Kelsey Grammer. Critics hated it, but my dad and all his old Navy buddies loved it to death and still quote it to this day and swear it was a far more realistic depiction (despite its ridiculousness) than all of these "high drama" submarine films.

I liked this movie when it came out, but I've mellowed on it over the years. It reduces the prospect of nuclear war to an interpersonal dispute between two hollywood actors.
When I was a little kid in '83, I discovered a cheat code. After I was made to go to bed, I could stick my head outside my bedroom door, look over a balcony, and see what my parents were watching on tv. One night, they watched the premier of the made for tv movie called The Day After. I was utterly traumatized for months, I would just lie in bed at night wondering if all the buttons had just been pushed.
