One of the very rare moments in history where a film won the big four at the Academy Awards - Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, and (of course) Best Picture. Well deserved too.

I think people tend to forget how great a performance Ted Levine gives as Buffalo Bill. The movie is perfect and one of my favorite movies of all time.
Very true! Foster and Hopkins get the plaudits, but his performance is just as memorable. And brave too - not just in what was required by the actor, but also the fact that playing such loathsome villains often invites hate mail (see also Scorpio from 'Dirty Harry').

When Foster went to the table read and heard what Hopkins was saying and how he said it, she never wanted to talk to him again in her life. On the set she avoided him for the whole movie because he scared the living shi* out of her and everybody else...And last funfact: Hopkins used to go to cinemas sit behind people and after the movie leaned in on them and said "You werent expecting this were you"...what a legend

The fact Anthony Hopkins was only in this movie roughly 24 minutes screen time, and yet he's the most memorable thing in this movie and won an Oscar just proves what an amazing actor he is!
@@alicepbg2042 I mean as a whole, because if you ask anyone, they'd say Anthony Hopkins. There have been numerous refernces to his performance in other movies and shows too.
He can't take all the ccredit for that. You could just read the screenplay without seeing the movie, and Lecter is still the most memorable thing. The story is just set up to make it that way. And then there's the way the movie is made. His cell is the only one with a glass wall. There's the things other characters say about him. Even the way he's shot and lit. Everything about the movie says "This guy is a seriously badass motherfucker and you should be afraid of him". Hell, when he's outside of his cell, he's strapped to a trolly, with a mask over his mouth. That alone tells you he's someone you don't want to forget about.
I'm more and more impressed with your reactions. Not only are they very emotional, but also intelligent. You know about cinema, and you have good taste. Your reactions are mature, respectful, and never over the top. I really feel like I'm watching a movie with you guys. Also, you're very respectful to each other, never interrupting when the other is talking. I love how when Denise already knows the movie, but never spoils anything for Ari. She always lets him figure it out on his own. I think this happened with The Sixth Sense. When Ari noticed that Lecter was above her, even though he’s the one in prison-brilliant! I read something about that.
Not sure if its been said; Precious, the toy poodle represents a lamb and the scene of the rescued Catherine hugging the lamb represents little Clarice saving her lamb and its not screaming. This movie....my gosh!!!! Its in my top 5 all time and I've seen hundreds, if not over a thousand of them.
Another great analysis, guys! Silence of the Lambs fully deserves the title “masterclass,” in every department. It’s also one of the few films that focuses on the effects of the Male Gaze, by having virtually every character look directly down the barrel of the camera whenever they’re talking to Clarice. The audience feels her discomfort as she’s assessed by the men around her, feeling their lust, condescension, judgement… she’s a woman in a man’s world, but she’s able to overcome that by her professionalism and strength of character. As for Hannibal, we’ll. one of my favourite scenes is the one between Hannibal and the senator. He’s playing it fairly straight and then can’t resist a little dig by saying what Bill had done. When he sees the senator recoil slightly at the thought of what might be happening to her daughter, he immediately attacks, exploiting out her fears in the most crude and monstrous way possible. It’s almost like Hannibal can’t help it - he even risks the deal he’s got to inflict pain. It’s his “thing.” As the young cop said, he really is some kind of vampire - an emotional vampire. Throughout the film, he does it, using his skills at reading people to cause pain, homing in on their vulnerabilities, exploiting them and then revelling in the emotional torment he’s caused… except with Clarice. Sure, in their first meeting he does it, mocking her upbringing, her aspirations and her attempts to better herself… but as she gains his respect that changes. By their final scene together, he’s actually using his skills to help her by dragging out her innermost motivations so she can gain power from the revelations.
I was going to leave a comment about all the staring from the men in the movie. Probably one of the reasons why this movie continues to give me the creeps even though I've watched it so many times but I love it so much because Clarice is such a great character and great role model. I heard the amount of women applying for the FBI increased after this movie was released. ❤
On the Graham Norton a few years back, Jodie Foster said Anthony Hopkins didn't speak to her while filming the movie. Except during their scenes together he kept pretty much to himself. Then afterwards she told him that she was scared of working with him. Which seemed to have shocked him because he told her he was scared of working with her.
This film inspired my closest friend to become a forensic psychologist. It's her favorite movie. A bit of trivia -- Brooke Smith, who played Katherine Martin, and Ted Levine, who played Buffalo Bill, became good friends during production. They were having lunch one day and she told him that the studio wanted her to gain weight for the role. He told her she should get a credit card from the studio to buy food with. She did, and said that was one of the primary reasons the production came in over budget.
I'm here for Denise's side eyes! Terrific reaction. I read somewhere that Hopkins had a little fun on set one day. As several folks joined him in the elevator headed out for their lunch break, just as the doors closed, he slipped into character voice and said from the back of the car, "Thank you all for joining me for lunch today." Needless to say, it creeped everyone out and they felt like they wanted to claw their way out of the elevator car!
Deserved one in her early days for Taxi Driver too but Hollywood was notoriously sexist & racist at the time, she also could well have received one for Panic Room but there were too many superior movies that year which diminished her performance, it’s annoying when that happens; some performances are overlooked because the movie isn’t as good as other movies - despite the acting being superior.
Hey Denise and Ari, In the novel, as Buffalo Bill dies, he asks Clarice "What does it feel like to be so beautiful?" because that what he wanted to be. ------ Lecter said Bill was turned into a killer filled him with so much self-loathing. ------ Hence he idolised the moth for it's ability to transform, that his dream was to transform himself into someone completely different - into a beautiful woman. -------- Intense for sure
I was lucky enough to meet Anthony Hopkins when I worked on the film, The Edge, which was also shot in my hometown of Canmore Alberta. So it was really nice to go home. Anyway, Anthony Hopkins is such a cool guy. The production rented a log house for him. This is a beautiful home, but it is huge. He said he did not want to stay in such a large place. But, he wondered if he could stay in the little cabin on the same property. That little cabin was one of my favourite buildings when I was growing up. I passed it every day on my way to school. It’s probably around 600 ft.². It is cute as hell. A little tiny Swiss style cabin with window shutters and window flower boxes. That’s where he stayed. Instead of the log mansion. He was kind to everyone he met in the grocery store, Marras, Where we bought our candy as kids. He walked around town quite a bit. Canmore is very beautiful. I was introduced to him on the set and I said it’s lovely to meet you, Mr. Hopkins and he said please call me Tony. Everybody just loved him in town and on the crew.
Something I like to think is that Clarice's suspicions were probably raised the second Bill opened the door and they began speaking. Not only does he fit Hannibal's description exactly, he introduces himself as Jack Gordon. Starling already knows that Bill's real name in Jame Gumm and also goes by John Grant...both JG names. Under her FBI training, she would know that when people assume pseudonyms, they very often tend to choose names with the same initials. Also, the Hannibal/Clarice relationship is fascinating... particularly in the books, where there are some real complexities to it.
It's a testament to Jodie Foster's acting abilities that the night vision scene had lighting but she made us believe it, watch it again closely you can see the shadows.
Ofc IRL that kind of night vision works via light *amplification*. It doesn't work in a dark room because it needs a little bit of light or projected infrared light.
@@hjorturerlend The goggles could also be emitting infrared light which would explain why the light source on objects comes from the camera's perspective.
My understanding of that scene was that there was only one light and it was in the camera to avoid shadows. But you can see the shadow of the gun when he raises it.
I saw the interview where she explained they tried many methods but couldn't capture what the director wanted and finally settled for lighting it avoiding as much shadows as possible, hoping that between the tension build up and her acting it would distract from the fact it was illuminated.
this has to be one of my favorite movies of all time, and the show Hannibal starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen, is also one of the best I've ever seen. I'm sure you would appreciate it a lot as well, and it's not excessively long.
@@OfficialMediaKnights Excellent choice. I do love Anthony Hopkin's performance here but Mads Mikkelsen is on a whole different level. The best comparison i've seen is that Hopkins plays Hannibal Lecter as we would expect a cannibalistic serial killer trained in psychiatry to be like, whereas Mikkelsen portrays Hannibal Lecter as somebody like that would actually be in real life.
the show is amazing. narratively it's kind of a mess since they talk in a way you don't hear people do in real life but as far as aesthetics it's brilliant.
Clarice did make one mistake. When she sees the moth land in the house, her instinct was "don't react, be cool and don't let on," but that let BB know that she knew about the moth he planted, and now knows it's him. She didn't respond naturally, like a person who happens to see a huge-ass moth in someone's home. Surprise would have been more natural.
What's so fun about the youtube react-verse is that its easy to forget that nobody has seen everything, even if me, as a spectator, have watched many reactions to the same films From time to time, your absolute favorites still pop up and you get to see people experience those moments.
That little smile from Denise when Ari reacted to "Hannibal" getting shot in the leg. Good stuff, as always you two! This kind of filmmaking is right up your alley and I knew I was going to love this reaction.
You often hear about these iconic films and the stories behind getting them made. Trouble getting money, difficult actors, harsh shooting conditions, delays, etc. The director, Jonathan Demme, and the actors are quoted stating it was the best shooting experience they had making a movie. Everything just worked, which makes the film that much more special in my humble opinion.

I'm so stoked that the movement of reaction channels is bringing these amazing classic movies to new viewers, and allows the rest of us the chance to live vicariously through their new experiences. I can't watch these movies for the first time again, but I can feed off your excitement which brings back a nostalgic sense of that first view.
It was being played it at the theater a few years ago. Seeing it on the big screen helped me understand the important role framing has in storytelling. So many times, with them talking straight to the camera made it extremely intimate and unsettling. It's one of my all-time favorites. It's also the first (and only) horror movie to win an Oscar.
Absolutely! These guys mastered how to frame and the height of the camera at all times during those conversations between Clarice and Hannibal. It was extremely unsettling and so effective. Masterful way of engaging the audience.
Just to clarify, plenty of horror movies have won an Oscar. Silence of the Lambs is the only one to win Best Picture, which is what I assume you meant.
One of the things that struck me when I first watched this, and I see every time I re-watch, is how cleverly the camera angles are used to make us, the audience, feel uncomfortable. The 'closer than usual' angles on Anthony Hopkins puts him *inside* our personal space bubble. Subconsciously, he's already making us feel defensive. The entire movie, for every shot, he's that little bit closer than everyone else being filmed from the same angle. It's genius level manipulation. Add in the performances from two of the very best actors the industry has seen, and it becomes a benchmark of excellence. There's yet more to be considered. Howard Shore is always outstanding, and the score elevates the film further, and Jonathan Demme lets nothing go to waste. This is one of the instances where the Academy got it right. The Silence of the Lambs *deserved* all the wins and is an example for filmmakers down the ages.
Thomas Harris has only written four Hannibal Lecter novels, all of which have been adapted for the screen; one of the novels has been filmed twice. 1) Red Dragon (1981) - The first novel focuses on the character of Will Graham, who captured Lecter, and how he must turn to Lecter to catch a new killer. This was filmed twice. The first is called Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann, starring William Petersen (of CSI fame) as Will Graham and Brian Cox (Succession) as Hannibal Lektor (they changed the spelling). The second adaptation was Red Dragon (2002) starring Anthony Hopkins as Lecter for his third time in the role, Edward Norton as Graham, and a supporting cast including Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson, Harvey Keitel (as Crawford)...and it brings back Anthony Heald as Dr. Chilton and Frankie Faison as Barney. 2) The Silence of the Lambs (1988) - The second novel. 3) Hannibal (1999)-This is the third novel, and the film adaptation was released in 2001. The film was directed by Ridley Scott and was Hopkins' second outing as Lecter. However, Clarice was recast with Julianne Moore. The supporting cast includes Ray Liotta, Giancarlo Giannini (Mathis from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), Frankie Faison (returning again as Barney), and Gary Oldman. 4) Hannibal Rising (2006)-This is the final novel and film. It is a prequel novel about Hannibal as he becomes who he is. French actor Gaspard Ulliel played the young Lecter in the 2007 film, directed by Peter Webber. However, there are two TV series based on the novels and films. - Hannibal (2013-2015) ran for 3 seasons on NBC and starred Mads Mikkelsen as Lecter and Hugh Dancy as Will Graham. It is set before the events of Red Dragon/Manhunter, with Lecter being a consultant for the FBI. - Clarice (2021) ran for 13 episodes on CBS. Set between the events of Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (the book/film), it focused on Clarice and the events after Lecter's escape.
The Hannibal TV show was fantastic. Mads made the role his own, fashioning a different Lecter that's almost just as terrifying. Evil was rendered by the wicked as art, and it was 'beautiful'.
I was attending the University of Florida when this movie came out. It was particularly intense because 3 months earlier Gainesville was terrorized by a serial killer, Danny Rolling who killed several UF students at the start of the semester.
9:24 He and Jim Carrey discovered together that they used the same method of acting in their most famous roles. Anthony use the the behavior of a crocodile and snake for Hannibal. Jim used the behavior of a parrot for Ace Ventura.
A lot of people would recommend Red Dragon but I would recommend Manhunter, a Michael Mann film. It introduces Hannibal played by Brian Cox. Also William Petersen. Great movie and you two would love it.
I feel like Manhunter does a better job of capturing the tragic nature of the book's villain, and it's just a much more unique film. Red Dragon has Anthony Hopkins playing Lector but IMO they tried too hard to make Lector the star which imo hurt the overall movie.
We all know how it is , Sir Hopkins won an Oscar for a 15 minutes screen time and a once in a lifetime preformance , but that being said there really should be a huge shout-out to Ted Levine, for playing one of the most Iconic, unique and lately unfortunately " controversial" roles in cinematic history, i mean imagine the size of this guy's balls to accept a role like that in the 90s .
My parents didn't monitor what movies or shows we watched as kids so I watched this movie so....many....times. It's still to this day one of my favorite movies ever. Holds up so well.
This performance by Anthony Hopkins should be the gold standard for what a more traditional vampire should be. Obviously, Hannibal isn’t but he evokes the “monster in the shape of a man” that traditional vampires should be. You want to empathize and find some humanity in him but all that’s left of that part of him is a ghost. His memory of being human. Which he uses to manipulate and control those around him. He also showed the “sexual” nature of vampires well. It’s not sex but it is something intimate he wants to take from you. Something that you should only share with someone you trust but he wants it, or covets it, and will take it by force in a violating way. That and the sophistication and intelligence. Hannibal is from being a kind of prodigy but it could easily be transferred to experience from hundreds of years of experience. There is a proper way to do things and the niceties must be observed. To be rude or uncouth is insulting and to insult him is a death sentence. He disdains his peers if they are wild animals, like miggs, and will kill them just as easily as his prey. I would have loved to see prime Anthony Hopkins as a vampire lord of a court of vampires playing this game, with the same energy as this performance. Game of thrones meets the masquerade kind of thing.
There is one more actress who deserves a word and that's Darla, playing Precious the dog in the film. You would not think but that sweet thing was 16 years old during the filming so unfortunately she didn't live too much after all of this. She had time to nail one more role though, that was the Ratty Poodle in Batman Returns (1992) but after that role she passed..
Yaaaaay!! A movie that lives up to the brilliant book it’s based on. One of my absolute favorites. In the book there’s an amazing passage where Lector asks Clarice if she thinks he’s evil. She explains that she thinks he’s destructive and that, for her, that is evil. He goes into an explanation of how God must feel about evil. Brilliant! What’s wonderful here, in my opinion, is that these two people recognize the “humanity” in each other. When Clarice shares the story of the lambs it touches something very deep in Lector that makes him feel “human”. I’m so happy to be watching this with you!

I don’t care how many times you watch this movie, the anxiety is the same every time. As disgusting as what Hannibal is you still respect his mind. It’s so disturbing. Buffalo Bill is so insane and frightening. Jodie Foster is one of the best actresses I can think of. Anything she is in is gold. Please watch” The Brave One”, she is exceptional. Great reaction to this masterpiece of a thriller. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal is iconic, and well deserved. Love hearing you praise the acting, the writing, the cinematography. It this case, no praise is exaggerated. Hope to see your reaction to the tv-show with Mads Mikkelsen too, because it's one of the best series out there, in my humble opinion. Oh, and Hannibal Rising. It's not very popular with the fandom, but definitely worth your time.
I appreciate 6:05 so much! In any other movie, they would've had Lecter slowly getting up from his bed or chair or something like that before facing Clarice. Here (this was Hopkins' idea), having him already standing up like he was patiently waiting for her is way scarier. That's how you make the audience go "Oh hell no!"

It’s a haunting movie about personal repressed trauma and always sticks with you after, amazing Anthony “Tony” Hopkins only spends like 12 minutes on screen and won the Best Actor Oscar for it well deserved; only film to be a horror/thriller film to sweep the top Oscar awards, it’s more like a superb deep detective procedural; dominance body language and speech are portrayed the whole time
This film is so damn good, in 90 years, only three films have won "The Big 5" at the Oscars. It Happened One Night (1934); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975); and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Jodie Foster and SIR Antony Hopkins performances are next-level imo. Perfect script and also perfect direction. Masterpiece.
Very perceptive of you, Denise, when you said he's like a snake. Anthony talks about how he prepared for this character; he embodied characteristics of a snake, tarantula and a crocodile, which added to him as you said, never blinking. As someone who is pursuing acting, he is one who's performances I study when I learned this about him. Using reptile and insect characteristics really changed the way I think about portraying and approaching a role. Number one favorite actor. Tony also reads poetry constantly all the time and memorizes them which he says has helped him with memorizing his lines.
Haaaa, what a genius!! Animal work can be insanely useful in acting, especially when it comes to defining some of the physicality of the performance - it can be such a powerful tool to find the character! Hopkins truly is one of the greatest of our time and it's so inspiring to see what his technique is!

Wow! "Magnificent" analysis, breakdown, and review - I LOVE you guys take of this film (it is truly brilliant movie). I'm really hoping you guys continue with this series, and check out the next film in the series "Hannibal" (Anthony Hopkins gives another phenomenal performance, and the story, and cinematography is great in that next part as well).
I love how in their first meeting, Lecter's eyes go wild as he is taken away by his insanity with the whole fava beans and chianti then he catches himself and his eyes switch back to normal. Amazing. Another good one is 'Manhunter'.
Everything about that movie is fascinating. It's much more stylized, often feeling like a fever dream, especially the climax. Gotta share, traveling cross country and stooped at a out of the way convenience stores in BFE early in the morning still half dark and misty and nearly deserted. Like a scene right out of a horror movie. I thought "if this was a horror movie the killer would totally waylay victims here." I walk in and Inna Gadda Da Vida is playing (thecsong played in the climax of Manhunter). I carefully watched my back while picking out snacks...

I have loved these two since I first saw them. They are two of the best. But there is something extra special when she has seen the movie and the sly little looks she gives when she knows what he’s about to see. Muah. Chef’s kiss. Another great one guys. Keep em comin.
Hey Denise and Ari, Martha Stewart was dating Sir Anthony Hopkins at the time the movie came out. ---- His performance was so chilling, that Martha left him soon after seeing the movie. ---- She thought if he had that in him as an actor that must be buried somewhere in him as a person. ---- She couldn't see him as anything other than Hannibal. And expected him to eat her liver at any time going forward.
That’s actually really sad, but completely understandable. I always thought that way as well. If an actor can play such a terrifying & demented character on-screen, maybe they really have some thoughts like that inside, & I could never be with someone who could act well. 😂

Great reaction! One of my favorite movies of all time. Like I can't tell you how many tiimes when I was in high school I use to quote all of Hannibal's lines from this movie. Anthony Hopkins ans Jodie Foster demonstrated a masterclass in acting. This movie is a 10/10 for me. I hope you both get to react ro Hannibal amd Red Dragon one day!

Nobody picked up on Roger Corman & George Romero, famous horror director-writers? Sir Anthony Hopkins appeared in the film less than 25 minutes yet won for Best Actor. He was on screen 9 minutes less than Oscar rules for Best Supporting Actor nominations.

40:31 this bait and switch is so brilliant, and the build-up to it throughout the entire movie is phenomenal. When Hannibal tells Clarice he’s going to help her catch Buffalo Bill, we assume he means that he just means he’ll help her solve the case, but he is able to manipulate the situation so that Crawford ends up at the wrong house and Clarice is given just enough clues to get her to the right address

Tension, psychological horror, suspense, and a calm collected nature of Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.....truly the best performance Hopkins has ever put on the big screen. If you like this as much as you did, then I'm sure Denise (if she has watched it) would have no problem showing the TV series "Hannibal" or the other movies involving Hannibal Lecter. The TV series has Mads Mikkelsen playing the cannibal psychiatrist, so I'm certain you'd have a nice time watching his performance. Once again, as I've said before: keep up the great work ❤

I saw this film the week it released, and over the decades I have watched it dozens of times again and it is truly a masterpiece. Even after all those rewatches I am utterly riveted and immersed until the credits roll, and THAT is what true cinema is, it transcends time and era.

I think people tend to forget how great a performance Ted Levine gives as Buffalo Bill. The movie is perfect and one of my favorite movies of all time.

Very true! Foster and Hopkins get the plaudits, but his performance is just as memorable. And brave too - not just in what was required by the actor, but also the fact that playing such loathsome villains often invites hate mail (see also Scorpio from 'Dirty Harry').

On the set she avoided him for the whole movie because he scared the living shi* out of her and everybody else...And last funfact: Hopkins used to go to cinemas sit behind people and after the movie leaned in on them and said "You werent expecting this were you"...what a legend

The scene where Lecter mocked her accent was improvised and Foster felt Hopkins was mocking her acting which got such a great, genuine reaction.
Anthony also improvised the breathing through the teeth thing, and it scared the bejeezus of Jodie.
That line is in the original book. If it wasn't part of the script, I'd assume Hopkins took the book as reference.

The fact Anthony Hopkins was only in this movie roughly 24 minutes screen time, and yet he's the most memorable thing in this movie and won an Oscar just proves what an amazing actor he is!

He can't take all the ccredit for that. You could just read the screenplay without seeing the movie, and Lecter is still the most memorable thing. The story is just set up to make it that way. And then there's the way the movie is made. His cell is the only one with a glass wall. There's the things other characters say about him. Even the way he's shot and lit. Everything about the movie says "This guy is a seriously badass motherfucker and you should be afraid of him". Hell, when he's outside of his cell, he's strapped to a trolly, with a mask over his mouth. That alone tells you he's someone you don't want to forget about.
It's hard to imagine the Captain from Monk as Buffalo Bill.

Not sure if its been said; Precious, the toy poodle represents a lamb and the scene of the rescued Catherine hugging the lamb represents little Clarice saving her lamb and its not screaming. This movie....my gosh!!!! Its in my top 5 all time and I've seen hundreds, if not over a thousand of them.

Another great analysis, guys! Silence of the Lambs fully deserves the title “masterclass,” in every department. It’s also one of the few films that focuses on the effects of the Male Gaze, by having virtually every character look directly down the barrel of the camera whenever they’re talking to Clarice. The audience feels her discomfort as she’s assessed by the men around her, feeling their lust, condescension, judgement… she’s a woman in a man’s world, but she’s able to overcome that by her professionalism and strength of character.
As for Hannibal, we’ll. one of my favourite scenes is the one between Hannibal and the senator. He’s playing it fairly straight and then can’t resist a little dig by saying what Bill had done. When he sees the senator recoil slightly at the thought of what might be happening to her daughter, he immediately attacks, exploiting out her fears in the most crude and monstrous way possible. It’s almost like Hannibal can’t help it - he even risks the deal he’s got to inflict pain. It’s his “thing.” As the young cop said, he really is some kind of vampire - an emotional vampire.
Throughout the film, he does it, using his skills at reading people to cause pain, homing in on their vulnerabilities, exploiting them and then revelling in the emotional torment he’s caused… except with Clarice. Sure, in their first meeting he does it, mocking her upbringing, her aspirations and her attempts to better herself… but as she gains his respect that changes. By their final scene together, he’s actually using his skills to help her by dragging out her innermost motivations so she can gain power from the revelations.
I was going to leave a comment about all the staring from the men in the movie. Probably one of the reasons why this movie continues to give me the creeps even though I've watched it so many times but I love it so much because Clarice is such a great character and great role model. I heard the amount of women applying for the FBI increased after this movie was released. ❤
On the Graham Norton a few years back, Jodie Foster said Anthony Hopkins didn't speak to her while filming the movie. Except during their scenes together he kept pretty much to himself. Then afterwards she told him that she was scared of working with him. Which seemed to have shocked him because he told her he was scared of working with her.
This film inspired my closest friend to become a forensic psychologist. It's her favorite movie. A bit of trivia -- Brooke Smith, who played Katherine Martin, and Ted Levine, who played Buffalo Bill, became good friends during production. They were having lunch one day and she told him that the studio wanted her to gain weight for the role. He told her she should get a credit card from the studio to buy food with. She did, and said that was one of the primary reasons the production came in over budget.

I read somewhere that Hopkins had a little fun on set one day. As several folks joined him in the elevator headed out for their lunch break, just as the doors closed, he slipped into character voice and said from the back of the car, "Thank you all for joining me for lunch today." Needless to say, it creeped everyone out and they felt like they wanted to claw their way out of the elevator car!

Jodie Foster won her second Oscar with this film, her first for The Accused and she is brilliant in this film.
Deserved one in her early days for Taxi Driver too but Hollywood was notoriously sexist & racist at the time, she also could well have received one for Panic Room but there were too many superior movies that year which diminished her performance, it’s annoying when that happens; some performances are overlooked because the movie isn’t as good as other movies - despite the acting being superior.
Hey Denise and Ari, In the novel, as Buffalo Bill dies, he asks Clarice "What does it feel like to be so beautiful?" because that what he wanted to be. ------ Lecter said Bill was turned into a killer filled him with so much self-loathing. ------ Hence he idolised the moth for it's ability to transform, that his dream was to transform himself into someone completely different - into a beautiful woman. -------- Intense for sure

I was lucky enough to meet Anthony Hopkins when I worked on the film, The Edge, which was also shot in my hometown of Canmore Alberta. So it was really nice to go home.
Anyway, Anthony Hopkins is such a cool guy. The production rented a log house for him. This is a beautiful home, but it is huge.
He said he did not want to stay in such a large place. But, he wondered if he could stay in the little cabin on the same property.
That little cabin was one of my favourite buildings when I was growing up. I passed it every day on my way to school. It’s probably around 600 ft.². It is cute as hell. A little tiny Swiss style cabin with window shutters and window flower boxes. That’s where he stayed. Instead of the log mansion.
He was kind to everyone he met in the grocery store, Marras, Where we bought our candy as kids. He walked around town quite a bit. Canmore is very beautiful.
I was introduced to him on the set and I said it’s lovely to meet you, Mr. Hopkins and he said please call me Tony.
Everybody just loved him in town and on the crew.
Something I like to think is that Clarice's suspicions were probably raised the second Bill opened the door and they began speaking.
Not only does he fit Hannibal's description exactly, he introduces himself as Jack Gordon.
Starling already knows that Bill's real name in Jame Gumm and also goes by John Grant...both JG names.
Under her FBI training, she would know that when people assume pseudonyms, they very often tend to choose names with the same initials.
Also, the Hannibal/Clarice relationship is fascinating... particularly in the books, where there are some real complexities to it.
It's a testament to Jodie Foster's acting abilities that the night vision scene had lighting but she made us believe it, watch it again closely you can see the shadows.

Ofc IRL that kind of night vision works via light *amplification*. It doesn't work in a dark room because it needs a little bit of light or projected infrared light.

My understanding of that scene was that there was only one light and it was in the camera to avoid shadows. But you can see the shadow of the gun when he raises it.
I saw the interview where she explained they tried many methods but couldn't capture what the director wanted and finally settled for lighting it avoiding as much shadows as possible, hoping that between the tension build up and her acting it would distract from the fact it was illuminated.
this has to be one of my favorite movies of all time, and the show Hannibal starring Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen, is also one of the best I've ever seen. I'm sure you would appreciate it a lot as well, and it's not excessively long.

The best comparison i've seen is that Hopkins plays Hannibal Lecter as we would expect a cannibalistic serial killer trained in psychiatry to be like, whereas Mikkelsen portrays Hannibal Lecter as somebody like that would actually be in real life.

the show is amazing. narratively it's kind of a mess since they talk in a way you don't hear people do in real life but as far as aesthetics it's brilliant.
Clarice did make one mistake. When she sees the moth land in the house, her instinct was "don't react, be cool and don't let on," but that let BB know that she knew about the moth he planted, and now knows it's him. She didn't respond naturally, like a person who happens to see a huge-ass moth in someone's home. Surprise would have been more natural.

You often hear about these iconic films and the stories behind getting them made. Trouble getting money, difficult actors, harsh shooting conditions, delays, etc. The director, Jonathan Demme, and the actors are quoted stating it was the best shooting experience they had making a movie. Everything just worked, which makes the film that much more special in my humble opinion.

I'm so stoked that the movement of reaction channels is bringing these amazing classic movies to new viewers, and allows the rest of us the chance to live vicariously through their new experiences. I can't watch these movies for the first time again, but I can feed off your excitement which brings back a nostalgic sense of that first view.
It was being played it at the theater a few years ago. Seeing it on the big screen helped me understand the important role framing has in storytelling. So many times, with them talking straight to the camera made it extremely intimate and unsettling. It's one of my all-time favorites. It's also the first (and only) horror movie to win an Oscar.
Absolutely! These guys mastered how to frame and the height of the camera at all times during those conversations between Clarice and Hannibal. It was extremely unsettling and so effective. Masterful way of engaging the audience.
Just to clarify, plenty of horror movies have won an Oscar. Silence of the Lambs is the only one to win Best Picture, which is what I assume you meant.

I appreciate Denise recognizing the 'elegance' of the performances. That is so under-rated. It is an overt film, which is very intelligent.
One of the things that struck me when I first watched this, and I see every time I re-watch, is how cleverly the camera angles are used to make us, the audience, feel uncomfortable. The 'closer than usual' angles on Anthony Hopkins puts him *inside* our personal space bubble. Subconsciously, he's already making us feel defensive. The entire movie, for every shot, he's that little bit closer than everyone else being filmed from the same angle. It's genius level manipulation. Add in the performances from two of the very best actors the industry has seen, and it becomes a benchmark of excellence. There's yet more to be considered. Howard Shore is always outstanding, and the score elevates the film further, and Jonathan Demme lets nothing go to waste. This is one of the instances where the Academy got it right. The Silence of the Lambs *deserved* all the wins and is an example for filmmakers down the ages.

Thomas Harris has only written four Hannibal Lecter novels, all of which have been adapted for the screen; one of the novels has been filmed twice.
1) Red Dragon (1981) - The first novel focuses on the character of Will Graham, who captured Lecter, and how he must turn to Lecter to catch a new killer. This was filmed twice. The first is called Manhunter (1986), directed by Michael Mann, starring William Petersen (of CSI fame) as Will Graham and Brian Cox (Succession) as Hannibal Lektor (they changed the spelling). The second adaptation was Red Dragon (2002) starring Anthony Hopkins as Lecter for his third time in the role, Edward Norton as Graham, and a supporting cast including Ralph Fiennes, Emily Watson, Harvey Keitel (as Crawford)...and it brings back Anthony Heald as Dr. Chilton and Frankie Faison as Barney.
2) The Silence of the Lambs (1988) - The second novel.
3) Hannibal (1999)-This is the third novel, and the film adaptation was released in 2001. The film was directed by Ridley Scott and was Hopkins' second outing as Lecter. However, Clarice was recast with Julianne Moore. The supporting cast includes Ray Liotta, Giancarlo Giannini (Mathis from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace), Frankie Faison (returning again as Barney), and Gary Oldman.
4) Hannibal Rising (2006)-This is the final novel and film. It is a prequel novel about Hannibal as he becomes who he is. French actor Gaspard Ulliel played the young Lecter in the 2007 film, directed by Peter Webber.
However, there are two TV series based on the novels and films.
- Hannibal (2013-2015) ran for 3 seasons on NBC and starred Mads Mikkelsen as Lecter and Hugh Dancy as Will Graham. It is set before the events of Red Dragon/Manhunter, with Lecter being a consultant for the FBI.
- Clarice (2021) ran for 13 episodes on CBS. Set between the events of Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal (the book/film), it focused on Clarice and the events after Lecter's escape.
The Hannibal TV show was fantastic. Mads made the role his own, fashioning a different Lecter that's almost just as terrifying. Evil was rendered by the wicked as art, and it was 'beautiful'.
I was attending the University of Florida when this movie came out. It was particularly intense because 3 months earlier Gainesville was terrorized by a serial killer, Danny Rolling who killed several UF students at the start of the semester.

It's like DeNiro using a crab as inspiration for his walk as Travis Bickle in his awkward phase. And a cobra for Max Cady in Cape Fear
A lot of people would recommend Red Dragon but I would recommend Manhunter, a Michael Mann film. It introduces Hannibal played by Brian Cox. Also William Petersen. Great movie and you two would love it.

I feel like Manhunter does a better job of capturing the tragic nature of the book's villain, and it's just a much more unique film. Red Dragon has Anthony Hopkins playing Lector but IMO they tried too hard to make Lector the star which imo hurt the overall movie.
We all know how it is , Sir Hopkins won an Oscar for a 15 minutes screen time and a once in a lifetime preformance , but that being said there really should be a huge shout-out to Ted Levine, for playing one of the most Iconic, unique and lately unfortunately " controversial" roles in cinematic history, i mean imagine the size of this guy's balls to accept a role like that in the 90s .
At that time, trans would have seemed outside of the norm and possible suspect, so it fits the role.

My parents didn't monitor what movies or shows we watched as kids so I watched this movie so....many....times. It's still to this day one of my favorite movies ever. Holds up so well.
This performance by Anthony Hopkins should be the gold standard for what a more traditional vampire should be. Obviously, Hannibal isn’t but he evokes the “monster in the shape of a man” that traditional vampires should be. You want to empathize and find some humanity in him but all that’s left of that part of him is a ghost. His memory of being human. Which he uses to manipulate and control those around him. He also showed the “sexual” nature of vampires well. It’s not sex but it is something intimate he wants to take from you. Something that you should only share with someone you trust but he wants it, or covets it, and will take it by force in a violating way.
That and the sophistication and intelligence. Hannibal is from being a kind of prodigy but it could easily be transferred to experience from hundreds of years of experience. There is a proper way to do things and the niceties must be observed. To be rude or uncouth is insulting and to insult him is a death sentence. He disdains his peers if they are wild animals, like miggs, and will kill them just as easily as his prey. I would have loved to see prime Anthony Hopkins as a vampire lord of a court of vampires playing this game, with the same energy as this performance. Game of thrones meets the masquerade kind of thing.
There is one more actress who deserves a word and that's Darla, playing Precious the dog in the film. You would not think but that sweet thing was 16 years old during the filming so unfortunately she didn't live too much after all of this. Yaaaaay!! A movie that lives up to the brilliant book it’s based on. One of my absolute favorites. In the book there’s an amazing passage where Lector asks Clarice if she thinks he’s evil. She explains that she thinks he’s destructive and that, for her, that is evil. He goes into an explanation of how God must feel about evil. Brilliant! What’s wonderful here, in my opinion, is that these two people recognize the “humanity” in each other. When Clarice shares the story of the lambs it touches something very deep in Lector that makes him feel “human”. I’m so happy to be watching this with you!
I like how Hannibal sent the other agents to a different location and gave Clarisse the right location.

I don’t care how many times you watch this movie, the anxiety is the same every time. As disgusting as what Hannibal is you still respect his mind. It’s so disturbing. Buffalo Bill is so insane and frightening. Jodie Foster is one of the best actresses I can think of. Anything she is in is gold. Please watch” The Brave One”, she is exceptional. Great reaction to this masterpiece of a thriller. Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal is iconic, and well deserved. Love hearing you praise the acting, the writing, the cinematography. It this case, no praise is exaggerated.

I appreciate 6:05 so much! In any other movie, they would've had Lecter slowly getting up from his bed or chair or something like that before facing Clarice. Here (this was Hopkins' idea), having him already standing up like he was patiently waiting for her is way scarier. That's how you make the audience go "Oh hell no!"

This film is so damn good, in 90 years, only three films have won "The Big 5" at the Oscars. It Happened One Night (1934); One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975); and The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Jodie Foster and SIR Antony Hopkins performances are next-level imo. Perfect script and also perfect direction. Masterpiece.

Very perceptive of you, Denise, when you said he's like a snake. Anthony talks about how he prepared for this character; he embodied characteristics of a snake, tarantula and a crocodile, which added to him as you said, never blinking. As someone who is pursuing acting, he is one who's performances I study when I learned this about him. Using reptile and insect characteristics really changed the way I think about portraying and approaching a role. Number one favorite actor.
Tony also reads poetry constantly all the time and memorizes them which he says has helped him with memorizing his lines.
Haaaa, what a genius!! Animal work can be insanely useful in acting, especially when it comes to defining some of the physicality of the performance - it can be such a powerful tool to find the character!
Hopkins truly is one of the greatest of our time and it's so inspiring to see what his technique is!

I love how in their first meeting, Lecter's eyes go wild as he is taken away by his insanity with the whole fava beans and chianti then he catches himself and his eyes switch back to normal. Amazing. Another good one is 'Manhunter'.

Everything about that movie is fascinating. It's much more stylized, often feeling like a fever dream, especially the climax.
Gotta share, traveling cross country and stooped at a out of the way convenience stores in BFE early in the morning still half dark and misty and nearly deserted. Like a scene right out of a horror movie. I thought "if this was a horror movie the killer would totally waylay victims here." I walk in and Inna Gadda Da Vida is playing (thecsong played in the climax of Manhunter). I carefully watched my back while picking out snacks...

Hey Denise and Ari, Martha Stewart was dating Sir Anthony Hopkins at the time the movie came out. ---- His performance was so chilling, that Martha left him soon after seeing the movie. ---- She thought if he had that in him as an actor that must be buried somewhere in him as a person. ---- She couldn't see him as anything other than Hannibal. And expected him to eat her liver at any time going forward.
That’s actually really sad, but completely understandable. I always thought that way as well. If an actor can play such a terrifying & demented character on-screen, maybe they really have some thoughts like that inside, & I could never be with someone who could act well. 😂

Great reaction! One of my favorite movies of all time. Like I can't tell you how many tiimes when I was in high school I use to quote all of Hannibal's lines from this movie. Anthony Hopkins ans Jodie Foster demonstrated a masterclass in acting. This movie is a 10/10 for me. I hope you both get to react ro Hannibal amd Red Dragon one day!

The sequel didn't live to expectations, but the prequel - "Red Dragon" - did justice, mainly because of the stellar cast

40:31 this bait and switch is so brilliant, and the build-up to it throughout the entire movie is phenomenal. When Hannibal tells Clarice he’s going to help her catch Buffalo Bill, we assume he means that he just means he’ll help her solve the case, but he is able to manipulate the situation so that Crawford ends up at the wrong house and Clarice is given just enough clues to get her to the right address

Tension, psychological horror, suspense, and a calm collected nature of Anthony Hopkins as Dr. Hannibal Lecter.....truly the best performance Hopkins has ever put on the big screen. If you like this as much as you did, then I'm sure Denise (if she has watched it) would have no problem showing the TV series "Hannibal" or the other movies involving Hannibal Lecter. The TV series has Mads Mikkelsen playing the cannibal psychiatrist, so I'm certain you'd have a nice time watching his performance.

I saw this film the week it released, and over the decades I have watched it dozens of times again and it is truly a masterpiece. Even after all those rewatches I am utterly riveted and immersed until the credits roll, and THAT is what true cinema is, it transcends time and era.
I do love this film.
But the "Pen Thing" drives me absolutely nuts.
