What makes this reaction perfect is that she immediately picked up on the scathing satire and sarcasm that is so obvious yet so often misunderstood in this movie. Because it made sense to her right out of the gate she was able to just laugh at everything the way was intended to be laughed at, and she didn’t seem like she was trying to spare anybody’s feelings by hiding her amusement, or making constant disclaimers about how she “understands it’s inappropriate” etc etc. She has a very mature grasp on comedy, which makes her able to see the mature humor in this immature film. I have watched Jax react to many movies, and I have to admit I never expected this to be my favorite reaction ever to this movie, but I was way wrong. Great editing too.

One of the very best comedy movie ever made. Also, Les Grossman (played by Tom Cruise) is a word play from the french words "Les Grosses Mains" which literally translate to "The Big Hands". It is very clever from an english perspective, though very on the nose if you are french like me (or if you are just fluent in french).

You know, I didn't even catch that. And I speak (some) French (I'm about a 2 or 3/10 on the fluency scale, so I can communicate pretty effectively, verbally, but my word choice will be rudimentary and my grammar will be poor...and I might need any responses repeated a couple times before I understand the gist of what was said). But I obviously don't _think_ in French (like a francophone or someone who lives in a francophone city and has become fluent by virtue of exposure), which is probably why I never figured this out. That's actually quite brilliant (even if it's on the nose).

On top of all that, he's a huge Star Trek fan! Supposedly, he has one of the Gorn masks from the original series. His production company is named Red Hour, which is based on an event from the episode Return of the Archons. I could go on, but best of all, people keep asking if he regrets some things from this movie. Funny little easter egg here: Of course we see the rapper-turned-actor named 'Alpa Chino', you'd expect Al Pacino to be in the movie, right? Well, in beginning you see Bill Hader messing with the food on a tray on the movie set and he's wearing a 'Scent of a Woman' hat. Another Al Pacino reference. But wait, there's more.
At the end, Robert Downey Jr. is announcing the Oscar for Best Actor, and Ben Stiller's character wins it. The joke here? In 1993 Robert Downey himself was nominated for Best Actor- and lost. To whom? None other than Al Pacino, who won for his role in guess what movie- 'Scent of a Woman'.
In front of Ben Stiller is Jon Voight, who reacts angrily at that announcement (presumably he was also nominated but lost). My theory is that the whole time the plan was to get Al Pacino in so Robert Downey could announce that he "lost" the Oscar. Either Al didn't want to do it or couldn't make it, so they filled in with Jon Voight.

What you are doing is presentism, using the "norms" of today to form your opinion about a different time before the 2010s. The movie is not calling out Hollywood. The damn movie was made by Stiller. You can't be more Hollywood establishment than Stiller. The movie was just made before 2010, when humour and art was still very much alive, free and out of reach from politics.

I might be completely incorrect and off base, but all these guys go into the jungle, not realizing what they’re doing. Then, they all try to navigate the environment with no success. The amount of layers in this movie is crazy. The characters have depth and there are setups and payoffs. Some are funny like Alpa saying "Lance" and then seeing him at the premiere with Lance Bass from Backstreet Boys and others are serous and subtle like Four Leaf.
He is set up as this grizzled vet and the "payoff" is that he's a fake, they make him look like a coward. This is actually not the payoff, it's a misdirect as he proves to be brave during the escape holding off the baddies with the flamethrower and running under fire to detonate the bridge.
This movie really is a masterpiece in story telling.
