The battle itself is one of extraordinarily underrated significance to the Continental Army, it was the first time the American rebels took to the field, and stood toe-to-toe with British regulars and didn’t blink. They slugged it out with the British all day, eventually both sides disengaged with no significant damage or gains, a feat which even very, very few European continental armies can claim to have done. Monmouth was where the US Army was truly given its trial by fire after being forged in the ice of Valley Forge.

I gave up on it at first as it seemed a little slow, but some Red Raider buddies convinced me to try it again I am glad I did. Not only is it historically accurate, except for the Hollowoodizing to make it more interesting, but they did a great job of character development and showing you how the character develops. It is a very well done show.

The patriot was an atrocious affront to history though. Wrong in so many ways. I can forgive the weapon inaccuracies but the movies full of shit that’s so antithetical to history, just like Braveheart, that it’s just hard to watch.
For instance, British soldiers burning down a church full of civilians? Sure I’m Nazi German…
The American War Of Independence is a complicated subject full of wrongs on both sides, but nothing like Nazi Germany.
The patriot is pure garbage, and has nothing to do with the founding of a nation in the American colonies.
It’s ridiculous. There’s key points to remember when you throw aside the 20th century history books…
The “Americans” per se, we’re not fighting for independence until 1776. Until then they simply felt their rights as English men were being affronted; they weren’t.
The 7 years war caused massive debt to the crown spent entirely to defend saidncolonies.
“Founding fathers” used propaganda, to spread a narrative, and in the end only won because the French joined, and the crown (most British folk didn’t give a shit about the American colonies) was busy fighting several wars including rebellions.
The colonies actually had the advantage in the war.
This wasn’t the underdog defeats evil empire.
More a combination of various aspects that came together and caused what led to the founding of a nation.
A prime example is the fact that the crown wanted to STOP stampeding across native territory after the 7 years war, but entitled asshats like Washington (terrible general, great President, decent Marshall) who felt they were Owed that native land.

The Battle of Monmouth Courthouse, such a remarkably well done scene. The composition, the slow motion shots, and the whole scene together, as a whole, is what makes it awesome. I loved this show since day one, when Caleb is waking up to Robert Rogers' and his men after they'd been slaughtered. "Set It Right" is the perfect choice, it gives you chills watching it. As a Freemason and historian, I just appreciate the sacrifices made by so many unknowns, as it usually is the innocent who suffer most in war. Of course as a TV show we have to make allowances, as to the paid extras, repeated scenes from opposite angles, and the Show as a whole was truly underrated, I wish more seasons than 4. Love Angus McFaydens portrayal of Robert Rogers is just spectacular, as any historian/ war buff knows "Rogers Ruies of Ranging" especially our 75th Ranger L.I. Regiment, they take pride in their family tree and take pride in both Simcoe and Robert Rogers as their Forefather.

What I liked the most in this series is that they depicted *both* of the factions at war not black and white (as the americans are the absolute good and the britishes are absolute evil), but with shades of grey. Well, most likely the only exception was simcoe, whose change of heart was a little bit rushed imho.

One of the greatest scenes of the series. General Lee's plot to decimate the continental Army at this battle fail, the Brits thought it would end the war. Tallmadge was suspicious during the briefing but obeys orders. Caleb rides in to deliver a message that it's a trap which Tallmadge suspected. I guess Tallmadge was supposed to be a sacrificial Lamb being the tip of the spear, but that fails. After intercepting General Lee's predetermined retreat (he was delivering the victory to the Brits, they bought him off ) GW learned of the plot and showed up a day early as Lee was leading the continental army off the battlefield and into an ambush. GW gives him a public shaming and orders him to fall in behind; this later lead to a court martial and not a hanging, GW then takes the fight to the brits. Gives me goosebumps to hear GW yell fire and hear the cannons roar. The last couple of minutes of the episode were very moving as you can feel GW's gratitude toward Tallmadge and asks Tallmadge if he now trusts the Culper ring to which Tallmadge replies with my life and yours.

@adam smith. It was believe it or not, the 18th century version of a grenade launcher. Known as "the hand mortar" it could lob larger-than-bullet sized projectiles at far distances, or as featured here; multiple projectiles at once to rain down upon the enemy's position.
The weapon was used primarily by the navy which explains Mr.Brewster owning one, as he eluded to navy service multiple times in this series.
Also explains his beard; in the 18th century facial hair was extremely frowned upon, only outlaws, wilderness men and sailors had facial hair due to their lack of grooming.
I hope this answered your question sufficiently.

One of the greatest defining character moments from this scene comes from Simcoe. Look at how unbelievably comfortable and content he is when he's smack dab in the middle of a warzone where members of his own militia as well as the opposing army are slaughtering each other any regular man would hate and despise every waking second of this and be permanently scared by the horrors of it but not Simcoe
Hilariously Simcoe feels publically insulted that Andrei demanded an immediate retreat when the odds have become impossible now that Washington and his Dragons have come in to storm the battlefield
It really is telling that Hewlett always was Simcoe's complete and total Anti-Thesis to his very character a man who detested war and violence hut was roped into it hoping it would enevitably lead to a greater sense of peace but not Simcoe. He doesn't care who the enemy is or why we're killing them in mass as long as he gets to feel blood on his hands that's all he wants. In a lot of ways he's a lot like Gaston from the Beauty and the Beast remake. Specifically in the Remake since in the old Cartoon this was never addressed or even foreshadowed but in the remake they made mention how Gaston served as a Kings Ranger is the 7 Year War making him a War Hero who has seen so much conflict that his mind can never know peace

This show inspires me now especially in a country where we are divided and people are trying to erase U.S. history. I will never let that happen and will show people like this show to always remember our history as it is important and so that it doesn’t repeat itself and so we divided Americans remember who we are and the country we live in! Will not let our history be lost without a fight! The good and the bad it needs to be remembered and should be remembered always

The actor who plays Major John Andre is a good looking man. Reminds me of the Loki actor.

pretty cool but the battle of Monmouth happened in late June, not early fall. and the american army actually was ordered to not wear its uniforms as it was too hot to fight in them
part of the reason the british lost was due to many of its soldiers collapsing from heatstroke

What kind of gun was Caleb using? It looked like a portable mortar?

    • @jarynn8156
      @jarynn8156 6 ปีที่แล้ว

It was a hand mortar. The weapon was introduced in the late 1600s and rarely saw much usage. There are some accounts of its service in naval conflicts, but few and far between. Turns out shoving an explosive inside an explosive barrel held up to your chest with 1600s metalworking capabilities is a bad idea.

This show and the Patriot seem to misunderstand what Dragoons are. They are mobile infantry men, they use there horses for mobility and then dismount to fight.

    • @markhoefnagel7548

+Bwkjam Well actually by the time the american revolution started, dragoons would fall under cavalry and weaponed and trained themselves to fight as cavalry, because they couldn't stand a change against regular calvery knowing that normally they were trained to fight on foot.
