I owned a GT with the 3.2 - one of the last cars with a Busso engine. Hands down the best thing I have ever owned. It made music even at idle or part throttle, and it roared when you pressed the pedal into the stop.
I had a 156 2.5 v6 semi automatic 4 speed box, full body kit, red paint and red leather, outstanding car, I'm now the proud owner of a Brera 3.2 v6 PRODRIVE, again in red, And it's beautiful to drive and looks gorgeous, my name is Rob Roy Mooney and I'm an Alfaholic
my uncle had a 147 GTA and there is nothing that can compare to that engine. The character, the sound and the feel. No other engine can can even come close to the great Busso

At least they have no oil problems and don't need services every 6 months. I mean, if alfas are known for something, it's breaking. It's not strange that they are going to be bankrupt soon.

I have a 156 Busso V6, owned it for 6 years and I was lucky enough to have bought it as a fully working 3.0 conversion, makes 230 bhp. I've owned a 2.5 156 before so mine is definitely something extra. Would never have made production as it steps on the GTA's toes too much. Some day it won't be economical to repair or I won't be able to afford it but I also know nothing will ever be as amazing to drive for a reasonable price. The power delivery, the way it revs, the sound, all utterly spell binding. Before the Busso I've never owned a car for more than a year or two, everytime I drive her it's like a new experience.
Me, too. The same happens for me: sometime I wait the next w.e. to drive my 3.0 SZ to forestate the pleasure of its driving (precision, tightness, acoustical)

Last year, at the 40th anniversary Alfa 6 event (video here: th-cam.com/video/RfbhpUiQ33I/w-d-xo.html) there was an engineer from FCA who was a trainee on the V6 line at Arese in the 2000s, sharing some interesting insight about the GTA project, and how it really was their initiative to suggest a stroked V6 for the car, instead of the turbo four cylinders the people in Turin were thinking about

When i was like 15 or 16, my father was running car repair workshop specialised in italian cars. I used to come there in my free time to see, what he is doing, and then i 1st time saw and heard 3.2 Busso engine. Since then, i was determined to buy once in future. Finally i managed to make my dream come true :D Worst thing about this is the moment, when you change car from busso to anything else, and the feeling of sadness...
I'm proud to say I've opened 3 Alfa's...147 (1.6), then the wonderful GT 3.2 V6... Bought in 2005, 20 spoke alloys, Bose sound system, red of course with an Autodelta conversion. I owned it for 3 years before selling it...I wish I still had it, but we moved house and it got keyed several times. I then bought a MiTo (1.4 turbo...120bhp Veloce), owned it for 10+ years before selling it earlier this year. I wish I had the desire to buy a 4C and do a Zender conversion/body kit...(dream on)...
I'm glad you liked it, as it's a "different" video from my norm: double the runtime, less funky images used to illustrate points, and a focus on just one element... Albeit a very special one!
Loved this engine so much, from the very first day I got my GT in 2008. What a beauty she was - black with a red leather interior. Eventually traded her in for a V6 Brera in 2012, but the GM engine just didn't compare to the Busso! Went back to the dealership a month later to get my GT back as it was still on the floor, but they didn't wanna budge because of some technical bullshit issue. Ended up walking out with a red 2012 Limited Edition GT which I still own to this day. Just added a numbered (18/30) Limited Edition Alfa-centenary model GT to my stable on Friday.

This engine is a work of art! Visually stunning, no cheap and nasty covers needed to cloak its beauty like a modern engine. But the thrill comes from the noise it makes, from light throttle through to full bore acceleration it is always stirring your soul. Drove an 156 and then 166 with the Busso 24v engine as a daily driver for 15 years. Never used any oil, just delivered its power and orchestra of sound day after day without tiring. I think I need to find another for Sunday drives.... 💓

I remember the first time my father opened the hood from an Alfa 164 3.0. So sexy looking thing. He bought the car and I learned to drive in it. What a glorious era.
Great story 👍 My brother had all the good ones. First the GTV6, then the America and finally the 164 QV. You always had a smile in your face when driving these cars - what a great sound they had! It was literally impossible to drive them with low rpm, you always had to push them, great memories 👌

I have been to the Busso anniversary in Arese in Capannone 5 (Meccanica e Collaudo motori) right before the facility was removed to make the car park for the expo. A sad day indeed, discussing with Elvira Ruocco, the sons of Satta Puliga and Busso, many former engineers and workers of 'La Fabbrica'. I own one 156 SW 2.5 V6 Facelift (2005) and wanted to buy a new Giulia Veloce 280 bhp Q4. After a test drive with this fantastic Giulia - despite the automatic gear and no possibility to switch off the little helpers for a more sporty drive experience - I sat into my 156 and turned on the Busso again and ....wow, I feel like the first day I bought it. Question to you as a specialist, but also open to the audience: Will the 156 SW 2.5 V6 Facelift (2005) Busso become a youngtimer and eventually a classic? Pro's: we know them all // Con's: too many produced, FWD, .... I hope to see some replies.

@@Matteo_Licata The Alfa dealer offered me 4 17" winter wheels with Michelins with 500 km off the clock for my 156 - I have gently sent him to a place you can imagine well... Problem is I need an every day car for business now and already have another pearl with a Busso heart, a 1972 2000 GTV (Bertone) in Alfa red and if I have to choose, I keep the GTV so when I retire, at least I can put my hands on - with the 156 (CANbus.. several spare parts already not available anymore today (!), this 'cantiere' could be a tricky one...). My heart says 'look for a good place you can store and keep the 156' and get the New Giulia Veloce Q4 280 bhp for everyday use...
I can understand the issue. Currently a nice 156 V6 sits between 4 and 6k Euros here in Italy. It’ll eventually appreciate some more, but will take time. If you’ll have to let it go, the memories will stay with you anyway! A 2000 GTV is the better weekend toy, that’s for sure.

Couldn't agree more! When I was studying automobile engineering in Turin, the GTA was about to be launched, and me and my classmates could drool for hours in front of one of these engines in Fiat's "dealer training" facility, where we used to have classes once a week.

And also One more friendly observation about the editing part: on your previous videos you usually added funny imagery which was fitting really nice to the character of your videos, but sometimes the sound effects from the imagery were really loud, making what you were saying at these particular moments harder to understand sometimes. This video doesn't have the imagery but has much clearer sound
I owned this engine in a 156 Sportwagon, silver with cognac brown Momo interior. I really loved the car and the engine, only downside being the fwd drive that couldn’t keep up with the engine’s waves of torque.
debatable if that is a beautiful car.. its back design is relatively beautiful but its front design is arguably ugly/weird/funny for a Lancia luxury car
the use of the v6-2500 on the Croma can also be mentioned. Thanks for your precious synthetic tribute to the great Busso and to that exceptional engine

Thank you very much! Yes, your 3.2 V6 is, to all intents and purposes, the last Alfa Romeo-designed and built engine. Current Alfas can be very cool and rather excellent cars, like the Giulia Veloce or the fantastic Quadrifoglio, but those engines are not Alfa engines. They're great, just not Alfa.

Thanks for that Video. One of the best V6 Engines ever Build. And I have two of them. A 164 Super V6 3.0 12 Valve from 1998 for Summer Days and a 166 3.0 24 Valve from 2002 as Daily Driver. The Sound and Performance of the Engines is marvelous. Purrs like a kitten on low RPM but when you push the accelerator, a Tiger gets alive under the Hood. Love it. Sadly, those kind of Engines will never Build again. Bella macchina.
He must have died with a broken heart when his magnificent creative art of an engine was discontinued. What a beautiful and one of the best if not THE best souding v6 engines ever having experience and sheer pleasure of once owning a 156 v6. I woud loved to have owned the GTA version.
Best NA V6 engine I ever DRIVEN!! I've previously owned CF2 3.0 V6 engine with factory 82mm throttle body WAS A MONSTER vs NA v8's I currently owned the 3.2 v6 GTA motor and silky smooth revs and sound is ADDICTIVE!
Wow again your work inspiring me to get a 3.0 v6 in a 164 prime condition only down side is the automatic transmission but still a gem :) thank you again keep up the wonderful work . Maybe a video on the lancia 037 this is such and unique amazing car this video would fill my heart with joy :)
My Lancia videos haven't performed so well, but I will certainly get back to the brand, as it's got a history just as rich and just as misunderstood as Alfa Romeo :) Congratulations on your 164, that car is now a collectors item here in Italy

I had an Alfa 166 with the 3.0 v6 24v and 226hp...what a treat it was that engine. Still in the family, as my brother drives it. I think i will buy in the future a GT with the 3.2 v6. Alfisti for life! Now owning a 156 1.8 from 2004...but glory days willl return :)

I usually appreciate more the boxers or inline 6 as they are very quiet on long drives buy every time I hear the Busso revving up, oh my god!!! It is amazing! I would not say it sound "romantic" it is more raw than that, more animalistic like when... Well, you all know what I mean!
i had the joy of having a Gtv 3.2 24 valve back in 2004.it was the only car i enjoyed driving almost as much as my motorcycles. Great sound, back that car should have being a RWD.
You forgot to mention the 3.2 24 valve was also fitted to the 147 GTA. My dream project to install the Q4 transmission, tunnel, etc to a 147 GTA or a GT V6 I also always wanted to see to install a 3.2 24 valver to the Alfetta GTV6
Really enjoyed this video learning about the Busso history, thank you. Having previously owned a 147 GTA I loved the final 3.2 24V CF3 variant dearly. I now drive a Brera 1750 TBi and although I'm spoilt with instant low down torque from the peppy new turbo engine, the lack of pantomime and roar when you put your foot down really does detract from the whole driving experience. Nothing quite comes close to the sound of a roaring Busso.
Thank you very much. I believe the Brera has taken too much flack from commentators during its production run. You chose well your engine, though: the turbo is the best engine for the Brera. Unfortunately there aren't proper Alfa engines in production anymore, and the character of the cars suffered as a result. The Giulia is a brilliant car, but its engines are nothing to write home about, except the Quadrifoglio, of course!
@@Matteo_Licata agreed, I feel the Brera always was a misunderstood car by the mass market. I love it, it's not a hot hatch, but it's a fantastic GT and that's exactly what it was designed to be. Build quality and luxury are unrivalled in this price point. It's got the exotic flair with its gorgeous Giugiaro styling, it's just a shame the partnership with General Motors led to using all of their rather unexciting petrol engines. Non-car people never understood my 147 GTA. "It's just a little old Alfa hatchback" they would say, and in some ways they were right, but it had this special chrome plated heart! The Brera, well the Brera has everything else, but is somewhat lacking that Alfa heart.

You forgot the Gtv 916 3.0 24v, same engine of 164 3.0 qv! I drove many times a '99 model and was one of the best engines ever driven, creamy and torquy on low revs and so mad next to redline
I had two 164s, loved them both. The second was a 24 valve automatic and definitely edges it for me. It boasted a 'sports' button setting which, when pressed, kept the revs climbing in each gear until the red line. I used to love overtaking Jaguars and BMs in it. Once, on a relatively quiet motorway, a big Merc' wouldn't get of my way...until at about125mph - and climbing - he could see I wasn't going to stop and his nerve gave way and I sailed past! Of course, I was young and foolish in those days. But what days! 😎

I'm proud to say I own one of the last of them - one of the last Guigaro manual 156's. The South African GTV's are special in another way - they are made of Carbon Steel, and so cannot rust. They are also turbocharged with a BIG Garrett !
I'm glad I owned a V6 24 valve 164. ( and two 164 Twin Sparks) It was a magnificent car and my kids tell me it was the best car I've ever had. It was just so capable and comfortable and although not cheap to maintain, it was affordable. It was extremely well made as well...with just a few quality niggles I could lay at the door of Bosch rather than Alfa Romeo.
Had 3 of them, 3.0 12 valve, 3.0 24 valve in 164’s and 2.5 24 valve in a 156. 12 valve was the best of the 3, so flexible and fantastic sounds. Nightmare to change the spark plugs though!
The V6 Busso was a symphony. Probably the best V6 engine ever created. The sound, the character, it was a perfect engine (not for the fuel consumption nonetheless). I have had a 156 SW 2.5 V6, and I've had the opportunity to drive the GTV and the 147 GTA.
This guy lived 92 years, because he listen the sound of the engine...

Alfa forever. Owned 75 1.6, 75 1.8 turbo evolutione number 142 of 1000, 155 2.5 v6, 155 2.0 turbo QV, 164 3.0, 166 2.5, spider 2.0 and gtv 2.0 v6 turbo. 75 is my favourite so far, someday maybe i will buy my dream - alfa montreal.

Silky smooth when treated gently but always willing to be reved up and show its teeth. In true italian style also very astetically pleasing 🍀

My brother had all the good ones. First the GTV6, then the America and finally the 164 QV. You always had a smile in your face when driving these cars - what a great sound they had! It was literally impossible to drive them with low rpm, you always had to push them, great memories 👌

I have been to the Busso anniversary in Arese in Capannone 5 (Meccanica e Collaudo motori) right before the facility was removed to make the car park for the expo. A sad day indeed, discussing with Elvira Ruocco, the sons of Satta Puliga and Busso, many former engineers and workers of 'La Fabbrica'.
I own one 156 SW 2.5 V6 Facelift (2005) and wanted to buy a new Giulia Veloce 280 bhp Q4.
After a test drive with this fantastic Giulia - despite the automatic gear and no possibility to switch off the little helpers for a more sporty drive experience - I sat into my 156 and turned on the Busso again and ....wow, I feel like the first day I bought it.
Question to you as a specialist, but also open to the audience:
Will the 156 SW 2.5 V6 Facelift (2005) Busso become a youngtimer and eventually a classic?
Pro's: we know them all // Con's: too many produced, FWD, ....
I hope to see some replies.

@@Matteo_Licata The Alfa dealer offered me 4 17" winter wheels with Michelins with 500 km off the clock for my 156 - I have gently sent him to a place you can imagine well...
Problem is I need an every day car for business now and already have another pearl with a Busso heart, a 1972 2000 GTV (Bertone) in Alfa red and if I have to choose, I keep the GTV so when I retire, at least I can put my hands on - with the 156 (CANbus.. several spare parts already not available anymore today (!), this 'cantiere' could be a tricky one...).
My heart says 'look for a good place you can store and keep the 156' and get the New Giulia Veloce Q4 280 bhp for everyday use...
I can understand the issue. Currently a nice 156 V6 sits between 4 and 6k Euros here in Italy. It’ll eventually appreciate some more, but will take time. If you’ll have to let it go, the memories will stay with you anyway! A 2000 GTV is the better weekend toy, that’s for sure.
Thank you for this video! They truly are wonderful engines. Of the Alfas I've owned so far, the 156FL 2.5V6 was definitely my favorite, engine-wise. I missed its character so much, that I just bought a GT 3.2 a week ago...

Couldn't agree more! When I was studying automobile engineering in Turin, the GTA was about to be launched, and me and my classmates could drool for hours in front of one of these engines in Fiat's "dealer training" facility, where we used to have classes once a week.

And also One more friendly observation about the editing part: on your previous videos you usually added funny imagery which was fitting really nice to the character of your videos, but sometimes the sound effects from the imagery were really loud, making what you were saying at these particular moments harder to understand sometimes. This video doesn't have the imagery but has much clearer sound

I owned this engine in a 156 Sportwagon, silver with cognac brown Momo interior. I really loved the car and the engine, only downside being the fwd drive that couldn’t keep up with the engine’s waves of torque.
I agree. Last 3 years of owning a 156 V6 I had a torsen differential in mine and it made a world of difference.

Yes, your 3.2 V6 is, to all intents and purposes, the last Alfa Romeo-designed and built engine. Current Alfas can be very cool and rather excellent cars, like the Giulia Veloce or the fantastic Quadrifoglio, but those engines are not Alfa engines. They're great, just not Alfa.
Lucky to own a 156SW 932 2.5 Busso for some 5 years now. Best sounding V6 engine I've ever owned.

Thanks for that Video. One of the best V6 Engines ever Build. And I have two of them. A 164 Super V6 3.0 12 Valve from 1998 for Summer Days and a 166 3.0 24 Valve from 2002 as Daily Driver. The Sound and Performance of the Engines is marvelous. Purrs like a kitten on low RPM but when you push the accelerator, a Tiger gets alive under the Hood. Love it. Sadly, those kind of Engines will never Build again. Bella macchina.

He must have died with a broken heart when his magnificent creative art of an engine was discontinued. What a beautiful and one of the best if not THE best souding v6 engines ever having experience and sheer pleasure of once owning a 156 v6. I woud loved to have owned the GTA version.
Best NA V6 engine I ever DRIVEN!! I've previously owned CF2 3.0 V6 engine with factory 82mm throttle body WAS A MONSTER vs NA v8's I currently owned the 3.2 v6 GTA motor and silky smooth revs and sound is ADDICTIVE!
Wow again your work inspiring me to get a 3.0 v6 in a 164 prime condition only down side is the automatic transmission but still a gem :) thank you again keep up the wonderful work . Maybe a video on the lancia 037 this is such and unique amazing car this video would fill my heart with joy :)

I had an Alfa 166 with the 3.0 v6 24v and 226hp...what a treat it was that engine. Still in the family, as my brother drives it. I think i will buy in the future a GT with the 3.2 v6. Alfisti for life! Now owning a 156 1.8 from 2004...but glory days willl return :)

i had the joy of having a Gtv 3.2 24 valve back in 2004.it was the only car i enjoyed driving almost as much as my motorcycles. Great sound, back that car should have being a RWD.

Having previously owned a 147 GTA I loved the final 3.2 24V CF3 variant dearly. I now drive a Brera 1750 TBi and although I'm spoilt with instant low down torque from the peppy new turbo engine, the lack of pantomime and roar when you put your foot down really does detract from the whole driving experience. Nothing quite comes close to the sound of a roaring Busso.
Thank you very much. I believe the Brera has taken too much flack from commentators during its production run. You chose well your engine, though: the turbo is the best engine for the Brera. Unfortunately there aren't proper Alfa engines in production anymore, and the character of the cars suffered as a result. The Giulia is a brilliant car, but its engines are nothing to write home about, except the Quadrifoglio, of course!
@@Matteo_Licata agreed, I feel the Brera always was a misunderstood car by the mass market. I love it, it's not a hot hatch, but it's a fantastic GT and that's exactly what it was designed to be. Build quality and luxury are unrivalled in this price point. It's got the exotic flair with its gorgeous Giugiaro styling, it's just a shame the partnership with General Motors led to using all of their rather unexciting petrol engines.
Non-car people never understood my 147 GTA. "It's just a little old Alfa hatchback" they would say, and in some ways they were right, but it had this special chrome plated heart! The Brera, well the Brera has everything else, but is somewhat lacking that Alfa heart.
My ride is a 147GTA and it sounds *glorious*.

You forgot the Gtv 916 3.0 24v, same engine of 164 3.0 qv! I drove many times a '99 model and was one of the best engines ever driven, creamy and torquy on low revs and so mad next to redline
I had two 164s, loved them both. The second was a 24 valve automatic and definitely edges it for me. It boasted a 'sports' button setting which, when pressed, kept the revs climbing in each gear until the red line. I used to love overtaking Jaguars and BMs in it. Once, on a relatively quiet motorway, a big Merc' wouldn't get of my way...until at about125mph - and climbing - he could see I wasn't going to stop and his nerve gave way and I sailed past! Of course, I was young and foolish in those days. But what days! 😎

Un motore che ha vinto di tutto dalle gare su strada, in pista nei Rally ecc ecc....... Un motore che con poche ore di lavoro è in grado di aumentare la sua potenza a livelli pazzeschi !!! E in più si presta ad ogni tipo di elaborazione, dalla più semplice, a quelle più esasperate... Ci sono tantissime preparazioni una delle più spinte che ho visto era un 3200 V6, bi-turbo che "rullava" 600 Cavalli ad occhi chiusi !!!
Fabulous engines. I was lucky enough to own the 156 2.5 V6 and the GT 3.2 V6. Both great cars.
I'm proud to say I own one of the last of them - one of the last Guigaro manual 156's. The South African GTV's are special in another way - they are made of Carbon Steel, and so cannot rust. They are also turbocharged with a BIG Garrett !

I'm glad I owned a V6 24 valve 164. ( and two 164 Twin Sparks) It was a magnificent car and my kids tell me it was the best car I've ever had. It was just so capable and comfortable and although not cheap to maintain, it was affordable. It was extremely well made as well...with just a few quality niggles I could lay at the door of Bosch rather than Alfa Romeo.
Couldn't agree more! The 164 had been developed very thoroughly. It certainly was a much better car than anything that preceded it at Alfa Romeo.
Had 3 of them, 3.0 12 valve, 3.0 24 valve in 164’s and 2.5 24 valve in a 156. 12 valve was the best of the 3, so flexible and fantastic sounds. Nightmare to change the spark plugs though!

The V6 Busso was a symphony. Probably the best V6 engine ever created.
The sound, the character, it was a perfect engine (not for the fuel consumption nonetheless).
I have had a 156 SW 2.5 V6, and I've had the opportunity to drive the GTV and the 147 GTA.
