I recieved my Porphis spray gun today. The prd-717 with a 1.4 tip. And the very first thing that i thought was. Quality i mean Quality. When you think Chinese and low cost you are not thinking of this kind of quality. This gun is hands down beautiful. And absolutely well built spray gun .Great job Porphis. And feels great in my hand. Looking forward to taking this thing for a spin.
Hi Mate, They are a quality tool, I think you'll love it, I know I love mine, definitely worrying the big boys in the spray world, let us know what you think when you've used it. The PRD717 can be used at quite low pressures with good results, so try experimenting a little, cheers, buddy 👍
"This gun is hands down beautifull". I wonder if i have a different 717, because like i said in another video to Pete, i'm not impressed with the anodize finish of this gun at all. It looks even worse than a 30 bucks Ali gun. It looks like they sandblasted the aluminium (in an attempt to eraze/soften casting imperfections) and then anodize it, which gives it a bit of a coarse finish. Not the ultra smooth silky finish i'm used of other manufacturers. I got mine last week so maybe they lowered their quality standards, or i got a monday morning gun. It sprays very nice though, so nothing to complain there, but finish wise i'm hesitate to buy a second Porphis ever again.
@Harolddespui I obviously can't speak for Porphis. All I can say is the finish on all my Porphis guns is very, very good. Sure, the PHS series isn't as well finished as the PRD or PC series, but I wouldn't expect that as the price is different and the manufacturing process is different, although performance is good. I have a few Sata guns that I got new. There are small imperfections with them, I couldn't be bothered to do anything about it as it doesn't affect the spraying, one had a scratch where the battery had been put in the digital gauge, just careless assembly, one the lever touchs the side so scrapped the finish and more, so it does happen I guess, cheers Harold 👍
Great comparison Pete! Also a great video as always _ thank you. I received my Porphis 717 yesterday. What a difference in controls, everything is smooth. Due to some bad weather here in Nevada and unfortunately I have to paint outside so I have not been able to try it yet. At least it didn't snow, but the rain creates the same problem. Thank you Pete, have a Merry Xmas if I don't get online!
Thanks for another great side by side video. I love my 717 although I only have the 1.3 tip set. Interesting to see the comparisons with the Iwata. Haven’t noticed the weight difference but you are right about the feel or balance. Looking forward to your review of the new mini gun. As always, I appreciate you sharing your knowledge
Hi Scott, they are a lovely gun, the 1.4 just speeds it up a little , I will be ordering a mini gun as soon as they are out, so quite excited to try it 😀, thanks Scott, much appreciated mate 👍
Looks like the Porphis is real deal. It's a great option for the Diy guys out here then you can buy a few and not kill your budget. I don't see a issue with the longevity as long as Porphis continues to back the guns with repair parts that are available to consumers .
Hi Mate, to be fair, the Porphis PRD guns are made as good as the big boys, and lots of people are using them now, I think the big companies will be a little worried 🤔, cheers buddy 👍
I'm really leaning toward this gun especially after seeing the finish you and others are getting from this gun. Also since you spray when it's cold that is my jam, usually here in western Wasington state USA we have about the same weather as you and I have gotten some of my best results in the cold.
Hi Tim, the Porphis PRD717 is, imo, the best gun out there at the moment, the WS400 Series 2 will push it but its nowhere near as universal, not as well made as far as longevity is concerned and is 3 times the price, a no brainer really, cheers mate 👍
Awesome review! Would you use the 1.3 or 1.4 tip for acrylic enamel single stage? Does one of those tips seem to perform better? I noticed you've used both sizes. Thanks!
This is my first spray gun purchase. Should I get 717 or 715 for spraying clear and base coat I’m considering getting 717 tip for clear and a NNK 715 mp 1.4 for spraying base
Hi mate, If you are buying a tip set as well, I would get the 717 in 1.3 for base and the 715 in 1.3 for clearcoat, unless you live somewhere very hot and like a very very fast gun, 1.3 will be enough in the PRD715
Hi Pete. I have the 717. Would you say it's not worth buying a LPH400 or Wider4L if I have a PRD717? Reason I ask is because I have an opportunity to buy a LPH400 at a good price with the silver cap.
Hi Mate, I think the PRD717 is a better gun than the LPH400, I've only got the LVX Orange cap, but, I have a Wider4L which has the same cap, different threads on the bezel but the bit that does the work is the same as the silver caped LPH400 and IMO the Porphis is better than both. The Wider4L and LPH400 are supposed to run, according to Iwata, at 1.1bar, so 16psi but most run them around 21 to 24 psi to get a flatter finish, the Porphis seems to run well at a huge range of pressures with ease, so a better gun IMO.
Hi Pete, a cracking comparison between these two guns mate the 717 really lays the clear on nice as does the Wider4L but it looks like the 717 puts out a wetter pattern making it easier to get a full wet coat down, it's not always the size of the fan that counts but the quality plus a wetter pattern is better for clear👌 I know I keep saying I'm going to get a Porphis gun but yet again I'm having financial problems which I wont go into on here, still having problems with my brother as well I really don't know what's going on there, happy days!!🙄😁😆 Thanks Pete👍
Hi John, Yes, people often assume a bigger pattern is better, but there's much more to it than just size. Well, that's what I tell the wife 😉 . The Porphis is definitely worth getting mate when you get some spare money. Hopefully, it won't be too long. Cheers John 👍
Ah yes mate as the old saying goes it's not the size that matters it's what you do with it that has the desired effect🤭😆 One day I will get the 717 mate no matter what it takes even if I have to walk the streets 🚨mind you that would probably cost me money😁😅thanks Pete👍
What is the best tip size with the 717 for HS clear? I spray in the US, not too cold or hot here. Looking for a restoration flat finish for a classic vehicle. Is the 717 better than the DeVilbiss with a T110? Thanks!
Hi buddy, I have the PRD717 in 1.3 and 1.4, the finish possible with either is superior to the Devilbiss T110. In answer to your tip size question, either is good with HS, if you like the gun a little faster then the 1.4 is the way to go, bearing in mind, all the split tip guns are slower than their none split tip companions, hope that helps 👍
What would you recommend to learn on and stick with for car restorations, between these guns for base and clear? Looking to spend under $300. Porphis 717 Master Elite 88 Black Widow Drizzle I have a 80 gallon 2 stage compressor. Thank you in Advance!
Hi buddy, The Porphis PRD717, it's the only split tip gun there, and it's really is good. I can't get hold of the black widow, as it is a US only harbour freight gun, but it's similar build and spec to the Aeropro A608, it's not, imo, in the same league as the PRD 717
Thanks for all the great videos, which of the porphis guns would you recommend that would get clear on fast? (Most like the sagola) or would you just recommend sagola? I have a big job on a police truck in 95° weather in Florida. (humid) and have to get the material on quickly. Thanks again.
Hi Mate, PRD715 1.3, PRD625 1.3, if you want to keep the price down the PHS155 is fast as well, not as well made as the PRD guns but still good for the money 👍
Hi Mate, Yes, normally full fan and full fluid. The split tip guns don't put out lots of material, so they never overwhelm a project. The pressure you use these will vary widely on what you are doing but may find around 25psi to be the sweet spot, cheers buddy 👍
Hi James, I've just looked it up, there's a fair few different ones about , the Dram I recently got is very good and not that expensive, Avalon in Taiwan also have some new ones out
Hi Pete! I ordered the MPH338 as well. Got it in the 0.8 tip. The email from them said it also can come with a 0.5 and a 1.0 tip. Now I only see the 0.8 and 1.0 tip in their website available to order. But I am not seeing the tips sold separately. Do you know if they will make them available separately? I would like to get the 1.0 and maybe the 0.5 as well at some point if I like the gun for the smaller repairs.
Hi Mate, If you message them, you should be able to get a tip set separately. Use the email I've put in the description. The email I received also says 0.5 as well, this is all very new, so I expect they will offer it once they have caught up with production
Hi Again buddy, I asked them about the 0.5 setup, and it's not going to be generally available, it is with bulk orders, so they will make them if there is a big order for them
Great video Pete!! I was in love with the Wider4L for a while until i discovered it it used alot of air. I have a 100Ltr compressor so its a no go. What full size/Midi gun do you recommend Pete for a Diy'er with a low air consumption around 300$ mark?
What I do for my clear in winter is i heat up a metal pot of water with a propane turkey fyer. Then i put my can of clear and can of activator in there to warm up before i mix and spray. Helps flow a lot better especially high solids euro clear
Yeah, I used to do a similar thing using hot water to warm it up. These days, the microwave is super quick and seems easier, so I use that. Cheers, mate 👍
I use a small heating element (5 bucks on Ali) which you can stirr your ready mixed clear with. One thing to notice is that you shouldn't take the heater out of the clear while it is still bloody hot, because the clear on the element will bake dry in seconds then. So first pull the electricity plug, keep stirring till the element is cooled off a bit, and then you can take it out and wipe it clean. 😊
@@peteshobbies5383 Just in a normal mixing cup. As long as you keep stirring/moving the element the cup won't melt. You can't let it rest to the sides of the cup ofcourse. 😂
Hi Steve, Yes, It should be ok, the figure given by Porphis is for 2 bar of pressure, this gun doesn't need anything like that so it air consumption isn't huge, cheers 👍
Hi Mate, on this video, it was 1.4 bar, which is 20 psi. It will work well at a bit lower pressure, but for best results with either of these 20 psi works well
Hi, probably the 717, they are quite different to use, the 715 is much faster, more like a Sata 5000 RP, the 717 is more like an LPH400 or Wider4L, but better 😉
I am still using that PRD-715 1.3MM for clear coat instead of my Devilbiss DV1-C Clear Coat gun. Sure the porphis I spray at 29psi compared to the Devilbiss DV1-C's 10psi but the porphis puts a lot more volume out while atomizing extremely fine. I use that PHS-155 1.8MM for primer/sealer too. I hope these guns make these other companies rethink their prices. All 3 of my DV1's were expensive and before those I used Walcom and those Genesi360 guns were almost $900. There is no reason for a spray gun to cost that much. Walcom has to be pocketing $650 off every genesi360 or alumino360 they sell
Hi mate, I must admit, I am thinking something very similar mate, the big boys have been hiking their prices up when a new model come out to a point where its just not justifiable. Slowly, as news of alternatives emerge it will start to take big sales form them , it's only a matter of time
