- Since the release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars, I have people telling me constantly how bad the camera is in Super Mario 64. I wanted to prove to the world that, while definitely not perfect, the camera in Super Mario 64 truly isn't that bad. So I set out to beat Super Mario 64 WITHOUT touching the camera even one time. This is what ensued...

*jumps and hits an invisible wall at the top of the clock and falls all the way down* FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
It can be hard. Depending on which number the minute hand is nearest, affects the speed of the moving platforms. I think 12:00 causes the clock to freeze, stopping all the platforms, and making the stage much easier to traverse.
@@inMadness881 is the slowest. 11 is the fastest, 12 is stopped.

I hate the camera in it, not using it is actually ok
Hope y'all are playing on the original cartridge, the camera isn't so bad with the buttons. Gotta face it, the game is programmed with digital inputs for the camera angle, the analog stick just isn't gonna translate well.

Yes!! I was going to say the same thing 🙈 I would say when I was when I got an Xbox 360 I realized that there was a thing called camera control 🤣 I was 14 and my family got Mario 64 when I was almost a month old 😆

@@sandeepsingareddy6331 No the cloud automatically moves the camera but Lakitu controls where you want the camera to be.

He said 2 hours to the boss painting, which was at 1:59:50
@@concernedcommenter8258 he very clearly moved the goalpost once he realized he wasn't going to make it, and in the ending even admits it took him longer to beat than he wanted with the initial goal
Fun story: when I played this as a kid in the emulator, I didn't know how to switch the camara so I actually did this challenge without realizing, I was so weird, that when I find out, I was like, Nahhh, I'm ok... I just get used to it.

Love how Uncle DGR just wakes up one day and goes, "I'm gonna play SM64 without controlling the camera!" and then proceeds to have the best SM64 run of his life.
I have a muscle-weakening rare disease and cannot move my arms, so I rely on the camera to move Mario more easily. Dave, I challenge you to beat 64 with all the same restrictions I have!

@steliosplaysmc You can do the Lakitu skip though. He did it(first try)the first time he played this version.

i didn't play the original mario 64, but as soon as i heard that that line was in the original i became sad it wasn't in this one :(
I tried this challenge myself, and I got 118 stars! The only ones I missed were the Tower of the Wing Cap because I couldn’t look up, and Wing Mario Over the Rainbow since you need the Wing Cap to get all of the red coins.

Little tip: if you get burned by fire (not lava), you can repeatedly tap jump to mitigate the damage (lose 2 HP instead of 3), and on top of that, you don't run around like crazy.

Dave the Big Boo star on the roof is even easier without moving the camera. Long jump to the right of the roof. Quickly turn to butt slide, jump twice to the star.
Literally you just hold...up right long jump. Rotate up left to turn, butt sliding on roof and hold left. Jump...jump. youre there.
Did you knew that that star is possible... while only pressing up on the joystick???
@@alisiaale565 dont think ive tried it while changing cameras. Ive done it the same way the past 8 years. Ill get out the n64 and try it right now
@@PopADoseYo, I have disabled all joystick controlls except for upwards and I was able to get the star.
@@alisiaale565 i believe it. Im talking in terms of speed running though. The fastest way to get the star is quite easy without moving the camera. Its easier than casually going for itm

On the level where the snowman blows you off the bridge, you can just back flip onto the penguins head to bypass the whole section.

I started out playing the DS version of this. Now that I'm playing the switch/original version, there are som many different thing and I'm really enjoying myself discovering them all! My only problem... It's such a pain to wall jump!

Same, I just find out about the wing cap later because of internet, sure would have loved it as a kid, I still love it till this day though.
Camera is the best part of the game. It makes speed running the game 100x easier. Its all about camera management.
Playing the game casually is actually much harder for me.
Start of the first bowser. Dont move the camera. Three perfect long jumps and immediatly jump dive over fire and jump out of dive. Triple jump up hill, wall kick onto moving platform. Bam youre past the rotating platforms in like 5 seconds lol.
You dont have to move the camera until you cross the bridge.

Wasn't this always the case with the Nintendo version? I always struggled with this because I only could change the camera angle with L and R and I didn't get why they didn't just moved the camera on its own

@DGR: 100% should be impossible without using the camera since it his impossible to get the star in Wing cap course, unless you give a rule that you can't move the camera when your inside the level, but since at that point you need the motion of the camera to be active, you can accidentally trip on the R stick and unintentionally move the camera within a level ruining the challenge and have to start over.
