You can collect up to 81 stars on a full-game basis coinless, 82 single-star, but there’s a lot of workarounds.
A few BLJ’s, a HSWK, etc.
You can even do CCCless (Capless, Cannonless, Coinless) and you can still get the same amount.
Check Pannenkoek’s video for proof.
It's also possible to get into Bowser in the Dark World without the required 8 stars.
Just have to travel to parallel universes
The one of 82 single-star that can't be done in a full game run is CCM Snowman's Lost His Head, for you can't collect it without selecting its mission, and you can't select its mission until completing Frosty Slide for 8 Red Coins.
CCless (Cannonless, Capless) can be done 119 stars, with the only missing one being Wing Mario over the Rainbow.

(18:00) Oh, a 70-star coinless clear is totally possible, without needing red coins at all, as there are indeed enough stars that can be gotten totally coinless. In fact, I've done that before many years ago (so I already knew SM64 was beatable coinless coming into this video), but I did allow myself to collect 1-ups and I didn't suicide whenever I accidentally collected a coin, but instead just exited the course via the pause menu. In fact, I think I was able to get myself up to 79 stars coinless back then.

Actually, I often use some backup in SSL once I miss the shy guy. Run over to the top of the pyramid, and the bird comes there. Gives you no coins. Awesome stuff though, might try it out on stream :)

I just got mind-fucked REALLY hard. I had no idea you could use the owl to get the caged star in Thwomp's Fortress. My ENTIRE childhood I always used the cannon!

You can actually enter the slide in CCM by clipping into the mountain without getting any coin.

At 10:10, u can do a triple jump before u go down the elevator and since there isn’t a roof, u go through the map at the peak of the jump and u can fall down to metal cap, metal head Mario can move, and swimming beast in the cavern
I can't be the only one who's terrified by the non-mustached small-nosed Mario that is supposed to represent DGR in the intro.
I attempted this challenge, but I am a crummy speedrunner. It took me 2 days to get past Bowser In The Dark World, and I kept accidentally grabbing coins I could have easily avoided 😁. Guess I'll leave this challenge to DGR.

When second bowser disappears and the key appears if you play it in slow motion then you can see that it spits out lots of coins that disappear in the air.
Does that mean that the key is made of coins and therefore technically a coin which would mean that you collected a coin Dave!?!?

once i did a speedrun of 16 stars, then i tried the BLJ up the endless stairs, but went so fast my hand hurt, then i went through the bowser picture...

DGR on the floating bowser island jump i watched it and i did the jump on my first try. if you roll in at a 45 degree angle it allows you to go farther try it trust me that is works
I'm still learning how to speed run this game. I'm watching trouble getting the first start in hazy maze cave by glitching through the wall and the rabbit skip

The real challenge is doing the 70 star Super Mario 64 run without collecting a single coin.
82 (Single star basis), 81 (full game) and this count includes using glitches…
Had to try this myself before watching, did the same rule for collecting = death, didn't think of the game over hard restart though. I got 77 without coins, I don't think there were any easy ones after that (I only used bomb clip since I'm not a pro). But basically beating the game normally is possible, no BLJ's required.
