  • Here is a new video !!
This is a model train produced by Fleischmann around 1944/45.
It's pretty rusted and the clockwork mechanism wasn't working .
Most of the parts are so thin that I couldn't do sandblasting... I decided to clean them using electrolytic pickling. It has removed the old painting and also the rust !!
Please watch till the end to see this antique locomotive in action !
By supporting the channel you help me make more of these video and find more amazing items.
I hope you'll enjoy this restoration.
Thanks a lot for watching !

This was great! Highlights for me are the fabrication of a new wheel and the "pickling" method to remove all of the old paint and rust. Given how damaged this toy was in the beginning, it is amazing that you managed to return it to like-new condition. Kudos!

Remember, after the war, Germany was divided into zones. The Russian zone became East Germany, and the three other zones, British, French, and American, became West Germany. Same thing with Berlin. So this was a wonderful thing to be made so soon after the end of the war.

Now, take a moment to think of the manufacturing of this little train....all of the individual components. Most, if not all of it was hand made. That's quite a lot of work for a clockwork toy, and probably took quite a lot of time when you add up the time for each part. The time and care you spent on it was well worth it. Nicely done.

I have no idea of post war, West German railway practice, but why would a tank engine also have a tender? Very interesting that Fleischmann were required to stamp 'Made in US zone' on their toys. Did the British insist on stamping every VW beetle made in Wolfsburg 'Made in British zone'?
Amazing transformation. Modern methods make a huge difference. Electrolytic rust removal, mini sand blasting, resin filling compounds and micro paint spraying probably make it look as good (or better) than when it left the factory, seventy odd years ago.

My 1938 Meccano Freight Set No. 2 is still it's original box with an engine, tender and two wagons with a circle of 'O' gauge track . A little bit of damage to one wagon but it runs as I've got the keys and original tissue packaging.

Cold war toys... Have few more recent HO models build beyond the iron curtain. Strangely good models, finely detailed, built to a high standard. Wonder who could have bought such things at the time, there...
Very impressive work by the way. Just perfect job.

That trains original material was probably ex military material repurposed for toy's 100% sure of that brilliant job a toy collector would pay good money for it .👍

I always find it very sad to see poor old toy trains that were stored poorly and ruined by rust, as well as badly broken parts... sometimes I will come across some like that, and try to save something, but it takes a good deal of effort to do so, and a lot of tools and equipment I don't yet have access to.
I think the thing that I was most amazed by, was the way in which all the original wheels were saved- most people would simply replace a broken wheel, yet you had a technique which produced a very satisfying looking, and most importantly, functional, whole wheel! I imagine with not too much use the paint wears off and the color mismatch starts to show, but this is a very useful strategy for a case when a new wheel might not be possible to purchase or make.
Sometimes when people say "this cannot be saved", the truth may actually be "this would require more effort, resources, and time then we could justify". For the joy of seeing something come back to life, though... maybe it's worth the extra effort!
